    A big thank you to the 8-bit Guy for reviewing my game "Realms of Quest V". I got quite a kick out of seeing him set up the dual disk drives in this video. To answer his criticisms:
    1) True, there is no overhead tactical combat view. That was a deliberate design choice that follows the classic "blobber" RPG games such as Wizardry and Bard's Tale that also only featured the portraits of the monsters that you would encounter. A party size of 10 players facing 5 rows of monsters that could have up to 15 monsters in each row.
    2) And regarding the complexity of the game that might be off-putting to players in the year 2019, it is very much like a 1980s computer RPG game that teenage boys would play back then. But I can understand how this game might alienate the casual fans in that regard. I pretty much programmed almost the entirety of the Dungeons & Dragons (Basic Set and 1st Edition AD&D) rulebook into this game. So I wanted to emulate the computer RPG experience for the actual VIC-20 computer--with disk swapping to boot.
    I very much enjoyed watching your video and I liked your allusions to Ultima of which I am also a big fan.

      It looks really cool! Does it work on emulators, too?
      (I know emulators can never get close to the real experience, but I don't have a C46 nor would I get one for literally one game as the C64 was way before my time, actually)

    • @thestripedmenace
      @thestripedmenace 4 года назад +6

      @@LRM12o8 It actually began its life as a free PC game, which you can find at locomalito.com!

    • @danielmantione
      @danielmantione 4 года назад +5

      @@LRM12o8 The digital version will run on emulators . The cartridge version needs a real C64, of course because it is a physical release, but also because it is a custom hardware design that emulators don' t emulate. There indeed exists a PC version, but as the C64 version is much better, I don' t think you should bother with the PC version.

    The priest game looks amazing. The visuals really blew me away.
    I've never even used a C64. I've seen games online, on channels like this, but that's it. But from what I've seen, that might be one of the most gorgeous games on the system.
    To do that in character mode is phenomenal.
    The music and atmosphere also impress me.
    Just as Planet X2 might have changed gaming entirely by being an RTS years before RTS was a thing, and provided something amazing and new to the C64, I think, from what we saw here, that the quality of that game could have done much the same, if it were released in the system's heyday.

    There was a game very similar to Realms of Quest V released in 1981, although not for the Vic-20, and it did in fact sell very well. It was called Wizardry! One of the most important RPGs of history!

    • @hitfan2000
      @hitfan2000 4 года назад +1

      Ultima is beautiful and tries to create an interactive world that draws the casual fan. But Wizardy is for the hardcore autistic rules munchkins. Ultima is the Beatles and Hulk Hogan of RPG games that has mass appeal. Wizardry is more like Pink Floyd and Ric Flair to satisfy the hardcore fans :)

    The moment you started describing Fire I was like, "Ghostbusters", and then yup! Also, the naming of rooms thing I think must've been a C64-inspired thing because a modern game called "VVVVVV" has named rooms and was designed to graphically represent a C64 game. even with a few C64 references like "?SYNTAX ERROR". I'm not a C64 person though so I have no idea where that inspiration originally came from. :P

    Hi Dave ! According to its italian programmer (Antonio Savona), in Abbaye des Morts there's a hidden sort of "run and jump" Game , which is activable in the following way: Once the game starts, on the very first screen, just go immediately all the left before the knights come up, and jump on the limbs of the trees, until you reach the very last tree on the right. Jump on the highest limb and then jump again. You'll we enter the hidden game ! It's very fun. :)

    I blame 8-Bit Guy, Retro Man Cave and Retro Recipes...
    Because of watching their various restoration videos, I broke out my A3000 that's been sitting in a closet for almost 8 years.
    I replaced its leaky battery... and it works! Having trouble reading some floppies, but I'm not sure if it's the drive or the floppies. Extremely sad, because I have some (I think) rare stuff on them.
    THEN I went and spent too much getting a PP&S Proram 3000 ram expander... this will be the first expansion card I've _ever_ gotten for my A3000, and I've had it since 1991. (tried to get a Retina video card, lost the auction :( )
    Now I've been shopping for a parallel port or zorro network adapter, and have decided I must save up for a ZZ9000 video/ram/net expansion card...
    AND I gotta get a Commander X16.
    AND and I've been fighting with myself to keep myself from digging my 128D out of the other closet and restoring it (assuming no caps leaked and ruined it). AND and and that means I'll need to dig out the 1084S monitor out of the same closet and probably have to recap it.
    So my spare time and any spare change for the next several months+ is going to be tied up... I can't wait. :D
    (and that reminds me, I meant to order Planet X3 (finally) today... )
    But first... the rest of the video...

    Man cave reminded me of Keystone Cops for the Colecovision. The abbey game reminded me somewhat with the changing room names and layout of Castlevania: Symphony of the night.

    7:33 = Ah, a locomalito game! Those are always fun. Granted, I have the PC version, but it's still a great title.

    11:00 that case throws me back to the old Sega Saturn jewel cases, right down to the tendency to crack. :P

      Man, can you just imagine a Fromsoft-style game made for an old system? We've already seen some retro-style ones in the form of Dead Cells and Blasphemous, but one could always go deeper...

      L' Abbaye C64 is a version made by Antonio Savona, it's an Italian surname but he lives in London (I don't know if he's an Englishman), the original PC game is by two Spaniards, so it's not a French game by any means.

    Would love to have the Boxed Cartridge version of L'abbaye Des Morts but unfortunately Double Sided Games had be sold out since early this year, and had been advised by them that they won't be doing anymore. 😢
    At least for the people who just want to play the Digital Download is available to purchase from Double Sided Games.
