Congrats on the million, David! Well-earned 👍 Neat idea to show a highlights reel of the past few years too, really enjoyed that sequence. Looking forward to the next time we can hang out.
I know you will probably never see this comment but I wanted to tell you that in July my daughter passed away from DIPG cancer. However a few months before she passed we had a wonderful evening sitting on the couch, eating pizza bagels, and watching one of your videos. "I never thought there were a million people that were interested in vintage computers or vintage gaming" There wasn't. You made them interested. Maybe it was the "How "old school" graphics worked Part 1" that hit the front page of Reddit, maybe it wasn't. Maybe it was the algorithm, maybe it wasn't. Either way, enough people came by, and you managed to keep them, and that's the hardest part.
I found this channel through my interest in modern computing. Its really interesting to see where it all started with someone who can explain the old days coherently. Its literally the equivalent of car guys listening to old racers talking about old cars or aviation enthusiasts listening to old pilots who had to deal with flying piston driven propeller aircraft its just a connection with the roots of your interests

I'm subbed to a number of channels I don't really have a deep interest in the produced content but the people are extremely likeable/engage-able and take pride in their work and you're drawn into their world. I've always liked computers and vintage computers tho as I crossed paths with 8-bit computers at first school and thought 'Yep, interesting stuff... I'll have more!'

To be fair, other RUclipsrs had to adapt after RUclips made the changes it did, and monetization became more difficult. I absolutely commend David's integrity here, though. Hopefully someday, there will be a healthy balance struck that everyone can work with, but it goes to show that creator and artist spaces always seem to get altered, often negatively that cause damage, by corporations. I hope I made sense.
"If somebody wants to watch a documentary about the Commodore 64 I want that video to be just as relevant 10 years from now as it was when it was released" - The 8-Bit Guy, 2019
This man always has a shocking secret up his sleeve, first I find out that he is Dimebag Darrel's second cousin, then that he speaks German and now that he was a part of an exchange program and lived in my friends hometown. Unbelivable!
David, I'll repeat this story on this video since it is wholly appropriate here. When we drove out to the Dallas Auto Show together a couple years ago or so, you were just under 400,000 subscribers. I said it'd continue to grow, and you said, "Nahhh, it's starting to slow down and I don't think too many more people will be interested in this kind of stuff," but I still believed in you and knew that your no-bullshit quality of video would propel you! I KNEW YOU'D GET THERE, MAN, so congratulations. I've been watching your growth for several years, and it was a great pleasure to get a tour of your house and go to the auto show with you. I've had the soundtrack CD you signed for me displayed on my bookshelf in the living room since the day you signed it!
It's kinda true for all long running channels that don't really change that much to fit the trend since the beginning. Basically, it kinda makes the gold button, or even the diamond button mean nothing, since those more or less has nothing to do with whether a channel is actually good or not. (Not that high sub count channels are bad, but they usually aren't on par quality wise with less popular but more unique channels, with very few exceptions and some kinda "turns bad" after becoming popular.)
I only knew him from 8 bit keys, so when this popped up in my recommendations, I was like, "Wtf, how is there a million people interested in old keyboards?" It still shocks me that so many people are interested in this stuff. I think it's just because this guy is such an expert and so good at what he does.
My interest in this is being able to see what people had to work with at the time and seeing how simple yet complex computing used to be. That and seeing how well someone is able to restore something.
Follower of this channel since the "How Video Game Music/Graphics is Made" series. It's crazy to see this channel thrive after all these years. Congrats, David!
@Neptune X12 You might seem him in the comments section, but he's Lazy Game Reviews. Goes over old tech and games. If you like 8BG, you should check out LGR.
While I am particularly nostalgic for the 1980s computer aesthetic, I specifically watch your channel because of the engineering skill and high standard of maintenance. Whenever I'm performing computer repairs, I ask myself: "would the 8-Bit Guy be satisfied with this repair?". If the answer is no, then I continue repairs, make cable management adjustments, or simply re-perform the entire process until I'm confident that you would consider the job satisfactory. You set a high standard sir, and I use it as motivation.
You got me hooked man. I started watching you shoot a wasps nest with paintballs. Then I got into in electronics and started watching your restorations. I now have a C64 and C64C thank you for hooking me on retro stuff.
The reason i watch this channel, it brings me back to a time with my father and his love for Tech. Now in those times it was was new. Majority of the stuff you look at, I've seen first hand and played with. After seeing these items again, I get to relive those memories from the early times in my life. I really can't express the joy these videos bring back to me. So thank you from the bottom of my heart! Congratulations on a million subscribers, so count me as one! Many thanks again and please keep those videos coming!

Congrats on 1M! Yeah, I remember around that time frame I had order my first modem from Jameco. I paid for a 1200 baud but they mistakenly sent a 2400 baud. When I called to report the mistake, they were kind enough to eat the cost and let me keep the modem. Although it's a laughable speed now, I was cruising the BBS's in style that year.
Congratulations David! I've always kind of been interested in retro tech like 8-bit computers as it was stuff I saw around as a kid but was never able to really experience. Das ist ziemlich cool, dass du Deutsch sprichst. Ich bin ein großer Fan dieser Show. Also I happy that this channel doesn't do stupid ads in the middle of a show.
Honestly, I feel like you’re one of the best youtubers on the website, who doesn’t bother people with stupid annoying ads like most tech channels do(linustechtips is a great example of really going over the edge with the lttstore bullcrap and incredible amounts of in video ads, but he is by no means the only one doing this). It really shows them that you can make a living and create amazing quality content without shilling our to crappy mobile game companies, and I really do appreciate it. You, along with eevblog and very few others, are the only people for which I turn off Adblock, because you really do deserve it.
When I worked at Radio Shack in the early 90's, we found one of those early era Tandy modems in the stock room still new in box. Had fallen behind a rack and forgotten for over a decade. It had 300 or 1200 baud switch on it and nothing more. We put it out on the sales floor in the computer section, joking that it would be worth more if we hid it for another 10 years.... few days later a customer about had a joyous meltdown in tears over it. He was a desperate technician for the cable company in our region sent out on a quest to find a 300 baud only auto dial modem in 1993. Had to be 300 baud for their teletext system, or be forced to retrofit their entire system. About crapped when a NIB exactly what he needed was found. This was when ebay and online sources of such items did not exist.
Congrats David! I always watch your channel. Even though I am never near ANY of the machines you feature in your videos, you still always seem to make every video interesting! Congrats again and keep up the great work!
Congratulations on 1,000,000 subs man! That plaque looks great on your wall. I agree with your idea about not putting ads in your content. I have two tiny channels but I will never put ads in my videos, like you said it takes away from the video. Here's to another 1,000,000 subs, take care!

Oh my lord, I remember the statue you were standing on as exchange student, I have lived for 3 years in Offenburg, so when I saw that picture, I thought hold a sec, that can't be... and you confirmed it. You were only 100 km (~62 miles) form the place I was born and live now again. And yes that time you where at Thoma to me a bit by surprise. Your german is still pretty good, for being so long not there. Anyway, congrats to your golden Play button, you have earned it and you put a lot of efford in it. By the way, I am from the younger generation, grew up with early pentiums, but it doesn't mean I'm not impressed and curious about the origin of vintage computing devices, that includes not only computer. ;)
I'd say you're successful because of the topics themselves. It's fun watching vintage hardware get restored. It's fun seeing how much we have progressed technologically. The videos are well paced and well scripted. You use a lot of descriptive words and speak clearly, making RUclips's auto-captioning function work really well and making your content more accessible to the deaf and blind. Not to mention the sheer passion you show. We can tell you enjoy this a lot, and it's enjoyable to watch someone who enjoys the content they create. You earned every subscriber, fair and square.

There wasn't. You made them interested. Maybe it was the "How "old school" graphics worked Part 1" that hit the front page of Reddit, maybe it wasn't. Maybe it was the algorithm, maybe it wasn't. Either way, enough people came by, and you managed to keep them, and that's the hardest part.
That's exactly how I found this channel, when the old-school graphics video hit the front page of reddit.
Nailed it. And thanks to the quality of the content, people came back for more, and then some. That's how I became a fan, at least.
The best comment is here. He made me interested.
Though he said hundred not million c. 1:15 ;] Uh he said million c. 13:50
@UsernameIt's funny how _cool retro_ lags 20-30yrs behind eh, I remember the 90s big 70s craze, I thus predicted the 80s comeback c.y2k. Alas you're right, I was early and 80s _coolness_ got a slow start. I'm guessing the 80s was up all night causing the 90s a sleepy hangover?.. ;]
When you're watching 8-bit guy, and the top comment is from LGR and 8-bit name drops techmoan in the opening minutes... The League of Extraordinary Nerds has assembled!

I dont even like vintage electronics I just enjoy your genuine enthusiasm for it and watch all your videos for that reason, you manage to make me want to learn more about a subject I have no interest in, which is a sign of a true teacher
There's a certain charm that many old computers and consoles have that aren't generally replicated on modern hardware.
Just The ability to turn of the system directly, is awesome
I'm subbed to a number of channels I don't really have a deep interest in the produced content but the people are extremely likeable/engage-able and take pride in their work and you're drawn into their world.
I've always liked computers and vintage computers tho as I crossed paths with 8-bit computers at first school and thought 'Yep, interesting stuff... I'll have more!'
I can still remember "The iBook Guy" and when you only had like 300000 subs.
TechFlame X68 “only” 300000 :D
I remember when he was in the 5 digit range.
It’s the same channel.
The occasional old Mac videos might show he hasn't forgotten his roots...

Some may see a comment this as too nitpicky.
I say, no way. I'm glad someone pointed this out, it's a pretty simple error if you really think about what's there, of course, but I can't say that I spotted it...
First time I’d ever heard of ‘Young Sheldon’ was earlier today when I connected an antenna to my tv for the first time in years, saw an ad for it during a movie.
Interesting timing...
The first time I ever heard of it was when David mentioned it in this video, lol.
weird how stuff like that happens sometimes isnt it
@@nickwashburn723 Not in this case. Mass media is crap and I don't consume it for the most part so it's not weird at all that I would not have heard of some t.v. show. I watch 8-Bit Guy, not CBS... lol (-;
That's the Baader-Meinhof effect
Thank you for not mentioning the subscription bell in every episode.
Not that the bloody thing works
Be sure to smash that bell tho and like + subscribble!
I'm so sorry.
It's pretty much natural instinct by now.
"If somebody wants to watch a documentary about the Commodore 64 I want that video to be just as relevant 10 years from now as it was when it was released" - The 8-Bit Guy, 2019
Still relevant.
"This thing is heavy, hard to hold with one hand!"
_Holds it with one hand and zero effort_

His strength knows no bounds
He's just that strong, he was just editorializing for REGULAR people strength. I mean look at him, the man is clearly a beast.
That's what she said 😁
....he also very nearly dropped it clean on the floor / his foot!
This man always has a shocking secret up his sleeve, first I find out that he is Dimebag Darrel's second cousin, then that he speaks German and now that he was a part of an exchange program and lived in my friends hometown. Unbelivable!
Tune in next week to find he works for Mossad! I did not tell you that, please ignore this and deny I ever told you this! Byeeee!!!! Ohhhhh!!!

He's related to Dimebag???
J He is, go watch Casio Superdrums Keyboard video on his 8-bit Keys channel
I just said to myself, “wait, he doesn’t have a million subs already?”
I only knew him from 8 bit keys, so when this popped up in my recommendations, I was like, "Wtf, how is there a million people interested in old keyboards?"
It still shocks me that so many people are interested in this stuff.
I discovered this channel via the video about how 8-bit music was made too. It s fascinating to learn how much better the C64 was over its peers.
Me too!
Same!
I think the same
Massive props for turning down the ad garbo. Keep it real 8-bit Guy, you're a dying breed and we appreciate it greatly.
1:15 "... I didn't think there were more than a hundred people interested..." - hundred thousand, surely! :)
12:45 I dunno why, but I feel pretty good knowing that LGR and 8BG have hung out before. Seems so fitting.
@Neptune X12 You might seem him in the comments section, but he's Lazy Game Reviews. Goes over old tech and games. If you like 8BG, you should check out LGR.
Just remember, he used to be The iBook Guy. The 8-Bit Guy is one of the best things on RUclips hands down!

I'm happy I'm not the only one who does that
You got me hooked man. I started watching you shoot a wasps nest with paintballs. Then I got into in electronics and started watching your restorations. I now have a C64 and C64C thank you for hooking me on retro stuff.

Regarding what you mentioned in your video, thank you for NOT begging us to subscribe and NOT plugging products. Your episodes are very entertaining and instructive. I am not at all hardware-savvy, so this is new stuff to me.
I love when you say dates and you always specify things like:"You know, next year" for people watching this video in the future.
Brilliant.
I'm glad to see that Young Sheldon went with a realistic modem and didn't have him using an early 80's Acoustic Coupler modem just because the director thought it looked cool.

Now that’s customer service!
If only this happened to me.
Congratulations David! I've always kind of been interested in retro tech like 8-bit computers as it was stuff I saw around as a kid but was never able to really experience.
