    Aw man, sorry to hear about your sister :( At least it sounds like you made it through well enough, it's good you had the games to keep you going through that sucky period. Fun retrospective all the same, it's great to hear you share your fond memories of games like these.
    I was never that big into racing games myself but I have fond memories of playing several of the NFS games. The original NFS was great just to enjoy the sights as you raced from A to B and crashing as spectacularly as possible. NFS2 felt like a step back to me cause of the more arcade-y feel and lack of cops, but NFS3 I remember having a ton of fun with. After that I kinda gave up on racing entirely and with how bloated the NFS series became after the 2000's I reckon I didn't miss much.

    • @LGR
      @LGR  8 лет назад +147

      Thanks, man. It's strange how something as simple as a computer racing game can really help you cope.
      And yeah, the games became hugely bloated and really lost their way if you ask me. Huge shame!

    It still baffles me how EA and the most vocal portion of the NFS fanbase treats these games like they don't even exist and instead insist that the franchise's "roots" are in the Underground era...

    • @kingnfs1
      @kingnfs1 7 лет назад +136

      Maybe because its due to current generation who havent play "real" NFS. Most of current generation started at U2,MW,Carbon thats why they think the roots of NFS is tuners and street machines not exotics. Even my first NFS game is Most Wanted, its our timelines collide. The world is constantly changing.

      @Zestyclose-Big3127 7 лет назад +17

      Back in the post-NFS6 Blackbox era those wishing for the return of the pre-NFS7 days (or at least those who think they were better) was certainly pretty vocal.
      I guess HP 2010 gave them enough of a fix? Maybe they grew out of it? Maybe there's so many more people who played NFS7 than those that played the earlier games that their voices simply drowned?

    • @dunxy

      Its sad that they don't actually know how good NFS started out :(

    • @Mrwheresmyhouse
      @Mrwheresmyhouse 7 лет назад +16

      The first one I ever played was Underground. NFS, or any PC game for that matter, just wasn't on my radar in the 90s since our PC was a 486 Packard bell that we kept up until 2003. (My parents blamed me when the 10-year old hard drive failed.) Anyways, Underground was the first to really be heavily marketed, as they were riding the coattails of Fast and the Furious. So, adding to what you said, it makes sense that when a lot of, especially younger people think of NFS, they think of Underground or later not even realizing that the franchise was already about 8 years old at that point.

    • @Zestyclose-Big3127
      @Zestyclose-Big3127 7 лет назад +32

      It annoys me that the 2015 release was marketed as a return to roots - it had already happened in 2010, and definitely didn't happen in 2015 at all.
      Though I wouldn't complain much if someone calls it a return to the glory days - I can see how one would consider the post-NFS6 Blackbox era to be that.

      First off, huge bombshell like already said. It's criminal these horrible things happen to good people. Sorry to hear that LGR, pained me to learn of that mate. She'd be damn proud I'm sure.
      As for Porsche 2000. Definitely my favourite. Played soooo many hours of that on my force feedback wheel and pedals. Loved how the wheel rumbled going over cobbles. Foundry level was fantastic. Need to find a second hand wheel now :)
      Great video. Those days were great for games and hardware. Id pine over the P100 (£1400 at the time) with its fancy FPU unlike my families first PC the AST Cyrix 6x86 100mhz. That cost us £1100!!! Still got it and it works! Early HTML and Doom, yummy. My parents worked hard for us to have a PC. Then the 166mmx I saved like crazy with my two paper rounds per day at school for that. Then onto the glorious K6-2, then a 1ghz Thunderbird and many more. TNT2 Ultra, Savage4 with S3TC (mmmm Unreal Tournament on that), Hurcules/Guillemot, geforces, the behemoth 9700pro.. ohhh so many memories... so many innovations. Just wish I didn't have to sell the current stuff to upgrade back then. I'd love to own all my old setups :(
      Great vid LGR.

    Damn Clint, when the discussion about NFS III happened it hit me hard, mostly because I can kind of relate to the passing of a family member oddly enough, around a similar time frame. I lost my grandfather in 1999 and at the time, being VERY young I could not really comprehend death so it did not effect me until much later, but I was still sad since my mother was very stricken with grief at that time. I remember being knee deep into the Playstation at the time and oddly enough, using games like Duke Nukem (The PSX ones of course!) and Gran Turismo helped me cope or at least try to move on.

    I felt this video. I grew up on Need for Speed 2, High Stakes and a demo of Porsche Unleashed which I eventually bought the full game of (labeled as Porsche 2000). Everything you spoke about was something I could resonate with as a child. The games not working. The cheat codes for NFS 2 and 4, playing with a friend which would always come over, doing the crashing thing and seeing the physics model. Even the cancer thing as I survived having cancer myself as a teen. All of this hit me hard.
    Thanks for the vid man, keep up the great work on LGR.

    Being the NFS fan you are you would kick yourself for not being able to experience Motor City Online. It was, and is still 15 years later the best racing game I've ever played.Being able to build a car anyway you wanted, staying up late watching the auction house for a rare car to pop up. Racing all night with your club, trying to get the best overall time and having your clubs name listed on the track for that week. Or just sitting around and chatting with the best online game community I ever experienced. EA is doing the fans and themselves a major disservice in not bringing that game back in some way.
    Also very sorry to hear about your sister, I lost my brother in 2009 so in some way I can relate, best wishes to you LGR.

    For me Need for speed underground and underground 2 were my favourite as they weren't just set races but had lots of elements including different challenges, unlockable parts of the city and a lot of customisation . I remember taking a bog standard car and making it crazy fast, it was relatable as you could actually own the same car yourself. I remember the controls were really good and pretty easy to use. In terms of other driving games for me South park rally, crash team racing, mariokart and Micro machines whilst not pure sim games they were pure fun.

    Clint, I relate to this video quite a bit. In fact, you probably opened the floodgates.
    First proper video game I've ever played in my life was NFS: High Stakes, around when it came out back in '99. Before that, the only game I remember playing was the Pole Position arcade cabinet, so something like High Stakes blew my mind. I remember being quite excited when I found one of the cars available was a Jaguar XKR (loved Jaguars at the time - both the cats and the cars - and I still do to this day.), even though I didn't buy the gaming on that, since I didn't know it was in the game. From what I remember, I just saw the cover on the shelf (I think we were in a bookshop or a computer store) and begged my parents for it that day. Can't say I regret that.
    Oh, and a year or two later, I remember I was in Wal-Mart and ended up finding a jewel case copy of NFS III: Hot Pursuit and at this point, I could say I was a fan of the series.
    These days, I've picked up and mainly play the PS1 ports of High Stakes and the other classic NFS games. Yeah, they're missing some stuff the PC version had. But all the critical elements are there and once I popped that disc for NFS: High Stakes in for the first time in years, it was like coming home to an old friend.

There needs to be an HD Collection of the 90s Need for Speed games for today's generation of consoles.

I worked at a store selling computers and hardware, and after closing time on saturdays and fridays we would hook up all the stores pc's and just have so much fun. We also played Outlaws, Quake 2, Quake 3 Arena and of course. Porsche game was great !

    One of my all time favorite games is Porsche Unleashed. I'd always loved Porsche and had a poster of a 911 on my wall. Getting to know the company's history and driving prototypes and stuff was awesome. I really liked the limitations of those older cars and their physics. You really needed a lot of patience because it took ages to get around a track, haha.
    I'm going to install it again tomorrow. See you in two weeks.

    and to think of it, Need For Speed: Road Challenge most of the soundtracks were from The Prodigy - The Castbreeder (1998)[Fake Album] , at least that what I was able to find out when I ran my copy of the game as an Audio CD :) so I don't know if it was only for the EU region, or the US copy had the same tracks, I found the album on RUclips as well, if anyone needs to find it just copy this into search bar: "The Prodigy - The Castbreeder (1998)[Fake Album]" , but boy, hearing those menu tracks from NFS3 and NFS4 just gives me the chills, sure were good times growing up with those games :)

    Playing Racing games with the keyboard is like a testament of one's skill. It's like FPS games with Dial-up, specifically Half-Life: Counter-Strike, most of the guns didn't work with 450 ms ping, except for single fire shots with the AK or M4, while standing still or crouching. Bullet Registration? Running around spraying and praying was just like giving out free kills to everyone else.
    I loved NFS III lots of LAN time, NFS Porsche Unleashed should be remastered.

    Awesome to see a original Need for Speed review. Brief lazy or whatever.
    I am just glad to see it wasn’t just me and my brother that loved the original editions so much.
    We had console, but even years later my 1/18th scale cars reflect the car selection of those early games.
    High stakes was a definitely favorite with the Camaros and Firebirds
    It sounds like I would’ve loved it that much more on computer.

    Amazing video, brought me back some great memories... I did a lot of crash courses as well hahah, it's amazing how easily we were entertained back in the days, but these were really great games. I got in touch with the series at 3DO system (yep, I had one!), so I never found these "arcadier" appealing, it was just not the NFS that I was expecting, but High Stakes was soooooo damn good, following by Hot Pursuit and then Underground. Amazing games.
    I'm currently playing NFS Heat and its actually a great game, honestly, I'm having a great time with it.

    I grew up with these too. I started with NFS II which I got in 5th grade (around 2000) from one of those book fairs. I think I ended up getting the first one for Playstation at some point, but by then I was playing NFS IV, which was my favourite. Porsche Unleashed was awesome. I don't know what happened to my game disk, and I wish they would put em all up on GOG, but alas.. I think it is funny that most of what you didn't really care for in Porsche Unleashed is what I did like about it. Also, I like Porsches. Kind of a chicken and egg thing with that.

    The Need for Speed was actually my first game on CD-ROM too back in the day. I think it was '96 when my dad brought it and it was the absolute coolest thing. I remember not understanding how to move because you had to press "A" to shift up. I was only used to games like Test Drive 1 on MS-DOS which has no such concept. I still have the original CD-ROM. Too bad it doesn't run on Modern pc's anymore. Even with DOS-BOX i had problems.

    We all know it’s Square Enix and Disney, but it’s much more than that to most people including myself. I never thought Square Enix at first look of Kingdom Harts. The first time I saw Kingdom Harts I thought that the game was a movie that was made only a video game. I thought that Disney made a movie into a video game and skipped the movie part. I did play Kingdom Harts 1 before the second one, but I did not finish the first one before playing the second one. Before playing Kingdom Hearts 2, I tried to complete Kingdom Hearts 1 but got stuck at the *RED* *DOOR* leading to Merlin's house. At the time I did not know that doors could be open by magic, so I got stuck. But at the time of playing Kingdom Harts 1, I had *A* *LOT* of Disney video games. The reason for playing Kingdom Harts 1 was because I saw it as another Disney game. But after failing to understand that the door only needed *FIRE,* I started to play Kingdom Harts 2. But my love for the game is not there. It’s when I was playing the game, I was taking medication to help my ADHD. Just only a few months (3-4 months) ago, I got told by a doctor that I had KBG Syndrome. But to the ADHD medication, it had an effect on me that made me want to kill myself. It was more known as depression. I already had that but did not know at the time that I had depression. So at the time of playing Kingdom Harts 1 and 2, I never wanted to listen to the story that the games had and I tried to skip the story if I could. When playing Kingdom Harts 2, I still felt like killing myself. But playing the game made me not think of killing myself and made me think about Kingdom Harts 2. The game took me at least 3-4 months to complete from start to finish. Towards the end of playing the game, I stopped taking the medication. It helped *more* off the medication then on it. I may have looked like I had ADHD, but only a few months ago I found out that I had KBG Syndrome not ADHD. So my love for the game is that, I played the game instead of *killing* *myself.* And if it wasn’t for the Disney stuff in the games, I would have never played Kindom Harts and would have *killed* *myself*

    I played the original Test Drive games on C64 / Amiga and when the first Need for Speed was shown in the magazines I read, I was instantly on board. NFS1 is basically a more modern Test Drive . Awesome game. I disliked when they focused more on circular tracks in the following games, but got on board after a while, but still, the original NFS is the one to beat, IMO. Great cars, great tracks and just on point.

    I as a kid saved all of my money for years. I never bought a thing. Then Play Station showed up and I immediately kew this is where my money will go. My first game was Need for Speed III. We bought it from the big mall called Metro in the closest city. I took it home and I instantly became the most popular boy in the neighbourhood... Insta friends came to us to play this gem. Anyway it was one of the greatest times from my childhood. That game was a miracle back that time.

    The PC and Playstation versions of Porsche Unleashed were completely different games. The PS version was like the previous NFS games and the PC version took more of a simulation approach. They did the same thing with the NGC, Xbox, and PC versions of HP2. HP2 for the PS2 was more like the earlier games (and was better) while the other versions went more sim. I played the demo of the PS2 version of HP2. When the game came out I got the Xbox version expecting it to be the same game with better graphics. I was stunned when I got home and saw it was a completely different game.

Still play it, and id say it enlightened me to two things, 1, modified older cars can be fastand 2, that japanese cars are as cool as i thought even though everyone at school was all about lambos n stuff, ahh so much nostalgia for the kp60 starlet labeled turbo s, that wasn't turbo, and that the game called "jetliner silver metallic" event though it was clearly green.

    I remember playing the hell out of nfs2 on my Voodoo.. something at the time, and it looked great with 3d Accel. I think they made it more arcadey possibly to compete with Cruisin USA, which came out on the N64 a year prior. Just a guess, could be wrong. I remember there being an unlockable level that was in a movie studio with a T-Rex blocking the track and other over the top track elements. So yeah, quite a departure from the dull highways of the first game, lol. Well, polarising you, I actually fell in love with the series based on the 3do version of the first game, which I thought was such a refreshing racing game at the time merely because it wasn't a circular track. It was just a linear section of road on an 'ordinary' highway, so it felt like you were part of a bigger world. Not isolated on a racing circuit like most other racing games I'd played. The traffic and physics made it feel more immersive and realistic I guess, despite not really being a 'sim'. The traffic definitely helped it feel like a 'street racing' game compared to any driving games I'd played prior. That feeling I got from racing down a highway with pedestrian traffic going about their business, before I slammed them into the ditch cackling maniacally at the feeling of power over these pathetic sedans and grocery getters, was something new and special at the time. My friend and I would play it for hours just terrorizing traffic. Of course that special feeling was fucking ANNIHILATED when GTA3 came out on the ps2.. but that's a different story.
