  • One more thing checked off my "Honey Do List". This is how I install a new steel door into a concrete block wall and finished.

    The round foam rope is called Backer Rod. Comes is different diameters up to 1” I believe. When installing doing doors and windows, you’re always going to want to use the can specific for “doors & windows” rather than gaps & cracks or big gaps. The “door & window” specific one will not cause whatever your installing to bow inward. Those other cans can cause bows and making opening and closing difficult. I highly recommend the Loctite brand. It’ll have a baby blue lid for the door & window one. The Loctite brand foam has a much higher density than the “Great Stuff” brand and does a better job insulating. It’s also white so blends in much better.
    P.S- Great tip for doing doors on your own… get a couple little pump air bags from Home Depot. They can lift 300lbs each. You can slip 2 under the threshold to get your height. You can also slip 1 or 2 on each side so you can get it square and level but it’ll also hold it in place while you start to attach it. Their awesome

      Great tips!. Not to mention that foam for large gaps can get everywhere when it starts to expand in areas that are too small.

      @@TobyRussell that is very very true. That stuff is the worst once it’s on your hands. Takes like 6 weeks to finally come off. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    For hanging pictures put a plant hook in the ceiling and put a rope to the back of the picture, the way it is done in antique homes. Thank you for this, our house is the same and my husband got the door in fine about a year ago but I haven't put trim around the inside as of yet. I'm still watching to find out how you trim it. We get drafts around doors and the windows are horid!

    This helped out alot, my only difference is I had a metal door frame, my house used to be a military base hour built in 57 and it has metal frames and 10x10x20 cinderblock and even drilling in was a bit tough on the drills since I burnt out a Porter-Cable drill.. but eventually got it done 😅

    If your store stocks outswing doors, you could use an outswing door and build jamb extensions for the interior out of 1x's and finish off with casing to the drywall inside. An outswing will mean you can't use a storm door though, but it is better in high wind areas. The other option is to special order the door with an 8 9/16" jamb so it sits flush in the opening without the need of flashing like they did on the outside of this house. That allows you to still be able to mount the storm door to the standard brickmold that he had to take off this door in the video. BUT expect to pay double the price of stock door to get the same exact door special ordered with the deeper jamb. Might end up being the same cost after paying someone to custom bend aluminum flashing to cover the exposed area if you don't know a guy. 30 years in building materials sales, there is always another way or two to get the DIY job done. :) Otherwise you have to figure out how to reattach the brickmold to the outside of the jamb and waterproof it as there will be a gap on the outside of the house until someone can come and bend the flashing for you and get it sealed.

    Nice job. I'm facing the exact same project. Did you do anything to the top part of the door frame? I feel like I need to put in something strong to keep the concrete block part above the door frame from wanting to fall.

    • @TobyRussell
      @TobyRussell  Год назад +1

      No I didn't however I do see people put a large piece of angle iron in them when building. Luckily since I was just asking out one door and installing a new door I felt I more than likely wouldn't have any issues since I hadn't already.

    I’m in the same situation, what if I don’t have that much room on each side for pressurized wood to go in? Would I just use tap on screws through the hinges into the concrete?? Thanks for the tips!

    • @TobyRussell
      @TobyRussell  Год назад

      Well i'm certainly no pro but that what I'd do. screw straight to the concrete and wedges.

    • @TheModelmaker123

      You could use a Forstner bit on the door's wooden frame and install the Tapcon screws like the OP used then install a white plastic hole plugs to cover the screw head. Use shims where the tapcons are located. Just remember the door frame is only about 3/4 inch thick so don't drill more than 1/2 way through. Use expanding foam between the brick and door frame. The expanding foam is like a glue.

    • @TobyRussell
      @TobyRussell  2 месяца назад

      @phongngo3396 mine was just block too. That’s why I added the 3/4 or 1/2” board to have something to screw to.
