We've been thinking about you guys a lot recently, and the troubles you were having getting into port etc. This whole crazy pandemic has really made us pause for thought and think about what we would need to additionally fit to our boat to be able to live off of the anchor for as long as possible. Nice to see you two making the most of the quarantine time and being inventive when it comes to cooking with driftwood! Here in Alaska, we sometimes use a wood called Alder, which adds a wonderful taste to foods, especially to smoked salmon. Hey, the gillnets there are much like they are here, except our gillnet fleet is made up of large commercial boats that set very long nets during the salmon runs and they also put a large float and flag at the end of the net, with one end attached to their large commercial fishing boats. Easy to see the net that way, just look for the boat and then scan backwards from there. Sometimes in the smaller passes and fjords here, there can be several boats with nets set in all directions and a good skipper has to find the ends of each one and navigate around all of them like a maze! Binoculars are a must! Nice to see things are improving in Spain. Here in the U.S., they'll probably start relaxing the quarantine restrictions a little bit next week but I'm retired so I come/go as I please (wearing an N95 mask and surgical gloves). Glad to see you both doing o.k. We thought we were doing o.k in Tasmania, but recently had an outbreak in the N.W of the State which resulted in the closing of two hospitals. Re rain water catching, we don't have scuppers but drain holes in our deck.(One one each side) We can plug these and when the water level rises above the water inlet ,we can open this and allow the rainwater to run in. Unfortunately we had our dog on board, so the thought of drinking diluted dog urine was not appealing. (We prefer it straight every time! Ha Ha etc!) Cheers, Rob.
Absolute joy watching you guys, a real treat...one question: Do you ever worry about leaving your dinghy and outboard on the beach when you are shopping?..I'd be paranoid of it being nicked (someone may already have asked this question and if so sorry to double up)
Yes it's always a worry. we always lock the outboard to the dinghy (it's the outboards that people want to nick. And we do have a long wire with two eyes in it to lock the dinghy if there's something to lock it to. Actually with the new dinghy I'm going to cut a piece of our old stainless steel anchor chain to use. In the more remote places without vehicle access to the coast (which is most places we go) you're pretty safe because unless you have a boat to take it to you're not going to be able to carry it away.Maybe we're all paranoid, you very rarely hear of dinghys being stolen.
One of the best rain water catchment methods I've seen, was to use a dinghy to catch the water & attach a hose to the drain hole to pipe it into the tank. (It was actually for a garden on land.) You'd want to have a very clean dinghy though.

Her system is a lot safer than mine. I collect rainwater off the deck but I won’t open the rain catcher there is any risk of a wave salting our water tank. Having the setup higher up is a safer way to make sure waves don’t spray into your rain supply.

Good point Adrian, I'll go back and put dates in the description so people who come to it late will have an idea of when it was shot. We put out all these videos in real time, so EP16 was all filmed over the last week or so.

No Jesus moment ?! Turning water to wine ...but I think this episode was full of miracles. So much I would like to comment on but not the time ...the episode was really nice!!
@@svfairisle Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I am assuming that when you refer to 'Beer' it is not the English Beer, but the continental beer or lager?
I have to comment on the Sangre de Toro (Blood of the Bull), did it have a little plastic bull charm attached to the neck of the bottle? 40 odd years ago while in South Africa, it was a favourite of the group of friends. Good to see you enjoying it!
I'm commenting on this video as it's the latest but so far have only watched your boat walk-around and I'm hooked. With regard to that video I really have to thank you for your financial transparency. It makes the videos real ... could I do that ? Yes/no. Then the dreaming can start. You seem very similar to some friends of ours, sold a house, bought a flat for some income and like you they can choose to top up with some work (in the financial field). One slightly techie question (is techie a word 🤔) I loved the led lights/different colours etc. Was that easy to fit and where did you find them? Sorry if this should be posted back on THAT video but I'm not sure how new comments on old videos appear. Just subscribed 👍
I got them all from Amazon actually, very easy to fit as they are 12volt but come with mains transformers so I just cut that off and wire them direct to the boats 12v system. I will make a video on lighting soon as I'v found a few different lighting options that are really good for boats now.
So funny watching Steve hack away at his hair, my Julie cuts mine from time to time, No.2 with clippers. Not so sure I'd go down the scissor route tho :0. Take care guys stay safe
Thanks for the heads up Richard. Thought that would happen! We do only sail once every three weeks to get water no way around that really but people are bound to talk!!
I love your channel guys I feel like part of the crew now. Is that deserted island very far from Benidorm, I remember as a little boy when we first flew to Spain going on a day trip by boat to this deserted island I just wondered if that could have been the island it wasn't far of the coast of Benidorm?
We know the island you mean. It has a little pontoon now I think they must do trips there, but the whole place is a nature reserve. Our island is a LOT smaller than that one!
P.S. Judy worries that you are able to identify a bottle on Leffe from a flash frame of the top of the bottle... personally I would expect nothing less from a Belgian!
Shops that sell gas bottles are still open in Spain, getting to one might be difficult but I would really do some research! Btw, I am no longer recommending to come to Ibiza now, I’ve seen the Guardia Civil board several boats and I think they are intercepting every boat that comes here. Be careful about taking your exercise, the police are ruthless in handing out fines for that. Best of luck, and I hope you’re able to get gas soon at least!!
No we will almost certainly go West about. If the situation the other side of the Suez canal was more stable we may have gone through. It's still possible we may go down to the Cape of good hope, but Judys father lives in New York so we will probably want to go up the Eastern seaboard so the Panama canal makes more sense from there.
Excellent. Thoroughly enjoying your excellent films, including your impressive technical corner features. This should be a Netflix series. We live in the US. All the best to you and we’ll keep watching.
"We are a social people" Correct. However we are also all unique and different. This means not all of we are a social people. Some few are quite the opposite, with even fewer of those being hermits. I personally am not an extrovert but I do enjoy being around people and the social aspect. Yet I am also just as content being alone for extended periods of time. And out in nature, especially out at sea, is great and ideal for that. Besides, while alone and solo, they will have some form of limited contact with today's modern tech. So its not quite as bad as it would have been. Even if that is with mostly race organizers, human contact is still contact. Not sure how I would fair for so long though. I would look forward to it initially, but would also worry about mo's later. Bit of a mixture I suppose. I know overall I would be fine the entire time but yea would have mixture of both feelings.
Talking to the guys that did it most struggled more than they expected. Kevin Fairbrother for instance who has climbed Everest 3 times, gave up in Cape Verde after a month not coping with being on the boat alone. I don't think theres much difference in voice contact either. Yes they have a weekly call by sat phone to race control, but thats all they get. They cant use it for anything else and the Ham radio network is just not setup like it used to be. It's much more difficult now to have a SSB call patched through to the phone network which is what the '68 skippers were doing.
@@svfairisle I can agree to all of that. And I am sure some of those were boasting or trying to convince themself too. But that is not to say that someone would have no or very lil issues. It is something that you can't fathom unless you have been there. I know from personal experience that after 30 - 45 days, even with limited contact from those of us onboard, we all started to become a bit loopy. So I can fathom it a lil, well enough to know personally might have issues over lengthy period of time like over half year if not sooner. Again have no actual experience being alone for even a month, but have some idea and pretty sure would be ok for shorter periods of that time frame. Edit: I meant to add that those fooling themself were do themself no favours. It is better to mentally prepare for such a thing as best as you can. Which I suspect was the main purpose of having it in your video.
Like you guys, I am pleased to hear that Spain seems to be managing the fight against COVID-19. Grouped within the construction industry, marinas and boat yards (in spit of extra work relating to health and safety rules) will slowly get back to some form of normality. However, up until now I believe your problem of marina access has been, as much to do with the social distancing, lock down as it has, border control, to regulate movement of people. Most, if not all EU countries have, since the outbreak of the pandemic, recently, reintroduced these border controls and I believe it will be sometime before Spain relaxes this total shut down and agrees to reinstate free movement within the Schengen region. Even then, Schengen will probably keep its external borders closed to international travel until well after the summer. Every port and marina is a source of external Schengen control and I assume entering any Spanish marina for the foreseeable future will be fraught with problems. Your last port of call, I believe was Cartagena, and if you haven’t wandered outside of Spanish waters, you are technically still in Spain, we can only hope that the Spanish authorities recognise this. But sailing from a Spanish port to a French port would be even more complicated until the Schengen region returns to its former self. Unfortunately, you will just have to continue with the beach barbecues and the drinking of inexpensive, but good, Spanish wine. Not forgetting, you still have the equally fine foods and wines of France, to look forward too.
Yes the marina issues are just down to interpretation of the law by individual marinas. Some are taking the directives issued by the government at face value and banning anyone entering their marinas no matter what. Others are taking the, in my view more sensible and definitely more sea faring approach, of upholding their duty of care to seafarers. I for one will remember the marinas who actually understand the sea and avoid the ones that are businesses with no regard for mariners. I think you're right about movement across borders. We arn't expecting to cross borders until at least late summer. Our best hope of getting some sailing in is being able to explore the Balearics. I really hope the Spanish allow movement within Spanish waters, not only for us but because I think businesses in the islands will not survive a dead summer season. We could easily spend a summer sailing the Balearics, my father lived on a boat in Mallorca for over 30 years so I know some parts quite well. Steve
@Sailing Fair Isle Steve, I am in the South of France, so I am lucky in the respect that once the border is lifted I can drive to Spain, whilst still exercising social distancing. UK based friends would need to fly, personally I would steer clear of group gatherings, for me, airports and ferries are taboo, until a vaccine has been found. I agree with your sentiments, however, each region of Spain seems to have its own interpretation of laws. I can only hope all of the Spanish territory including the Balearics returns to the Schengen rules asap allowing free movement of EU and Schengen citizens. If this happens at the beginning of June I will return to Spain and head out to the Balearics by early July. I believe, I mention before that we would look out for you if you spend the summer there, our boats name is COCO we are a Jeanneau Yachts 51, you never know, we might pop up on your AIS.
@@svfairisle I am not aware of all Marinas, but I think most if not all are following guidelines issued by the Government via Guardia Civil. Recreational boats are not permitted to enter or leave port and I think in the majority most seafarers are respecting that. Not least to ensure their own safety (ie not wanting to get trapped offshore without safe haven). This does not avoid a few unfortunate exceptions (maybe like yourselves) who got caught out prior to lock down. From Marinas perspective many are concessions gifted to the Marina by the Authorities... So I am not sure they want a black mark against them. Compliance is a big thing where ever you are and they are not likely to want to lose their concession.. From the anchoring up perspective, there was an example reported in Spanish Press here in Valencia a few days ago. A Spanish National who had decided to spend lock down at anchor off Formentera. He had been there several weeks before the local council were aware of his presence off a deserted island in the area and the Guardia Civil approached him and ordered him back to his own port (Valencia). He had a mooring there so this was a return to home port under order of authorities. Anyhow hope you find a solution soon or at least your complications are a minimum. Stay safe Stuart
Sailing Fair Isle I’m afraid my eccentricity lacks that of Vivian Stanshall, when the time comes, you will possibly recognise me as the one with long white hair, as I have point blankly refused my wife to come near me with a pair of scissors.
You'ld think! but actually I think i washed everything I own when we were last in port and still couldn't match socks! Apparently odd socks are fashionable... well that's my line and i'm sticking to it!
Pity that Suzy Goodall did not complete the Golden Globe race, as the winner did, a 73 year old Frenchman in a similar boat.. Why dont you guys just set sail back to the UK, as soon as the weather permits. If Spain touring will be possible at all this year, it will be very restricted. Good luck!
Yes the Southern ocean is brutal, it took out a lot of good boats and sailors in the GGR, just thankful no one was killed. Jean Luc van den Heede did incredibly well to win the race with the damage he did in the Southern ocean. They're all amazing sailors.
@@svfairisle Just another piece of friendly advice. The lockdown in Spain is now at day 35. Spanish people living in small apartments in cities with children at home are becoming desperate. When a local will see this video whilst you running on that beach (exersize outside is prohibited in Spain) they might contact the police. Unfortunately this kind of behaviour is happening today and police fines are horrendous. Anyways, just a well meant advice.. Her system is a lot safer than mine. I collect rainwater off the deck but I won’t open the rain catcher there is any risk of a wave salting our water tank. Having the setup higher up is a safer way to make sure waves don’t spray into your rain supply.
Thank you so much for the video guys, you’re helping keep the fire lit for me I have two more years on my refit. Hope to meet you guys someday, Jim, S/V Audrey Rose
I sailed a 48 ft Hans Christian ketch, named " North star" 1989-92. The fastest sailing marbel table in Baltic sea. I am so jealous.
Christine has been stepping a lot on our Wii Fit box (not switched on) using random music tracks on the TV. My exercise seems to be occasional gardening (lugging a petrol mower round the 120ft garden). Loved the BBQ on the beach idea with no gas!
Great content thank you
Think you both could be in a worse place you have everything at your finger tips even a island to exercise on We all hold our breath and hope this virus is over and we can enjoy your travels Keep up the filming I will always watch
its such pleasure seeing people in such beautifully horrid situation
Captain Rick does a brilliant and cheap water catchment system on his boat ssophisticated lady do look it's really cool
Great video, I know the Mar Menor well, we used to have a boat in Lo Pagan, worst places to be marooned 😀 We're about an hour north of you guys in Santa Pola
Yes we're lucky to be here, good sheltered safe place to anchor until we are allowed to move.
I'm going to have to try those BEER potatoes . take care
Neil lee pop a Wheelie Use some mixed herbs as well. I use oregano
That's a good idea with the potatoes, I'll have to try it, keep them coming, always enjoyable in lock down and at other times! (sv calico jack)
Have you considered building a gas system using stainless steel to produce brown gas on demand?! It is definitely an interesting project to consider.
Not something i've ever heard of, will look it up!
@@svfairisle Check out the attached link for an idea of how an hho generator is built. Remember, it's gas on demand and there are other hho generator design variations. the link is ruclips.net/video/AZD5iFT93b8/видео.html
Very professional production, beautiful vessel, if only we had the wherewithal and the courage. Ours is a 30 year old Westerly Konsort but in lockdown. If you are passing Guernsey on your return would love to have a look aboard, willing to bring a bottle or two.
Well the Konsort is a nice boat. Would love to spend more time in Guernsey. We love Beaucette marina, used to nip across from the South coast
Hi, we really enjoy your videos & we have just watched Ep 16 which i presume is now up to date. While we were catching up it would have been useful to know what the date was on each episode, unless I’ve missed it somewhere. The boat is superb & looks very comfortable, it must be very tricky keeping your stores up together. Stay safe & good luck. Adrian & Lesley.
Good point Adrian, I'll go back and put dates in the description so people who come to it late will have an idea of when it was shot. We put out all these videos in real time, so EP16 was all filmed over the last week or so.
I have read that burning salt [ in driftwood ] can produce toxic gases [ dioxin ] so in foil is best or perhaps in strongish cross winds away from the flames using the heat only
nice video thanks
Good day guys! Any good news about the possibility to sail again in Spain? Our cat is stuck in Barcelona ready to sail to Venice but unfortunately we have not any idea if after June 9th will be permitted sail again......All the best!
Jacopo Tollot Unfortunately we don’t know either and we want to be heading the same way. Restrictions are being reviewed on May 9th so we hope to know more after that. Stay safe
@@judyaslett2 Sure! There is no way to go far away and meet people in this moment.......;-)
Anyway let's say that I'll keep you posted about the Italian situation, harbors opening and possibility to sail the Italian waters....(Italian Gov decided to start the unlock the next May 4th but at the moment without more specification)...Please if you can keep me posted about the Spanish situation will be really appreciated......Naturally if you need to have info and some connections in Venice and neighborhood just let me know we have many friends on site.
All the best, Jacopo and Anna.
Thanks very much, we will let you know if we hear anything.
No Jesus moment ?! Turning water to wine ...but I think this episode was full of miracles. So much I would like to comment on but not the time ...the episode was really nice!!
happy to see spirits are up you guys!
Greetings from Austria - still not able to get back to our boat :(
i'm with the Indian, lock-down for me was heaven
wait until you discover Portuguese vegetables and wine! 😎😇Mind-blowing!
Yes we enjoyed them on the trip down the Atlantic coast. No one has pimentos as good as the Portuguese.
Hi There! Sorry I didn't quite catch what it was that you did with the potatoes? In the mean time stay safe and be well!
Just cut them up, add some herbs and tip some wine or beer into the foil bag you make for them and put them on the edge of the BBQ for 20 mins or so.
@@svfairisle Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I am assuming that when you refer to 'Beer' it is not the English Beer, but the continental beer or lager?
Fly Mac yes lager
I haven’t cut my hair in months! You look much more presentable than I do 🤪
Too quick to return me thinks - - nice video - stay safe - -
I have to comment on the Sangre de Toro (Blood of the Bull), did it have a little plastic bull charm attached to the neck of the bottle?
Don Laight Blunt scissors! That was the real problem....
I was kind of expecting to see a bit of ear fall off in the hair cutting saga ..lol
Its amazing how we all adapt to different situations and make the most of it ,that wine in the plastic bottle what was the name of it please :)

Hi there, just wanted to let you know you are the topic of conversation on a fb post.... Spanish giving out about you sailing about on a lock down. 🤣
Thanks for the heads up Richard. Thought that would happen! We do only sail once every three weeks to get water no way around that really but people are bound to talk!!

How do you upload your video? 4G or do you have to go ashore for WiFi.
4G, its pretty good here but a juggle with limited data. We cant get local sims from the shops now.
I love your channel guys I feel like part of the crew now. Is that deserted island very far from Benidorm, I remember as a little boy when we first flew to Spain going on a day trip by boat to this deserted island I just wondered if that could have been the island it wasn't far of the coast of Benidorm?
It is in the Mar Menor where we are anchored. South West corner
We know the island you mean. It has a little pontoon now I think they must do trips there, but the whole place is a nature reserve. Our island is a LOT smaller than that one!
@@svfairisle Thanks very much
Can I book for a cut and blow dry please! 😂
i was pretty sure you weren't pouring the Leffe into te potatoes :) :) :)
Ha! no... far too precious!
P.S. Judy worries that you are able to identify a bottle on Leffe from a flash frame of the top of the bottle... personally I would expect nothing less from a Belgian!
@@svfairisle always been a keen observer, don't you worry, Judy :D
Is that Fair Isle on your hat and t-shirts ?
Yes!
Yes we only exorcise on the deserted island. We only ever see seagulls!
John Rambo is a beginner compared to you , guys. From La Manga, GOOD LUCK !!!
Will you be going on east around the world?
No we will almost certainly go West about. If the situation the other side of the Suez canal was more stable we may have gone through. It's still possible we may go down to the Cape of good hope, but Judys father lives in New York so we will probably want to go up the Eastern seaboard so the Panama canal makes more sense from there.
Excellent. Thoroughly enjoying your excellent films, including your impressive technical corner features. This should be a Netflix series. We live in the US. All the best to you and we’ll keep watching.
Steve - the difference between a good hair cut and a bad hair cut?...three weeks. No news on how the beer-poached potato medley turned out?
Gareth Draper Hi we realise we should have left the results in! Lovely! Can never have too much bbq in an episode
Mooi man
"We are a social people" Correct.
I would never try to cut my hair for fear of summoning a demon.
I think we would only get a demon if I tried to cut Judys hair!
Stay safe
Stuart
@@teddyboysdontknit810 We will certainly keep an eye out for you. Can we spot you by the quiff and the lack of knitwear?!
Sailing Fair Isle I’m afraid my eccentricity lacks that of Vivian Stanshall, when the time comes, you will possibly recognise me as the one with long white hair, as I have point blankly refused my wife to come near me with a pair of scissors.
I bet that you have another pair of socks just like that...
