    Jade and Steve (The Boatshed Sailmakers) rigged our boat in summer 2021 and the rig hasn't moved since they did it, still bar tight after 6000 miles from Ireland to Carribean via the med. Steves sails are also the best in the business, and he just did the transatlantic with me. Legends all of them in that loft (Julie, Alaw, Owen, Paula)

    Agree, both our masts are off the boat and next to the boat in the yard. Stripped masts and much to do.
    Have a great Christmas

    Whenever you have doubts about stainless steel or any material, clean and polish the piece and check with a good magnifying glass all the welds and according to the direction in which the piece exerts force (were fatigue start), so you will see if there is an imperfection and as the expert said touch it. Happy Holidays and sorry for my English.

    Great learning from the rigger.... I have been studying one rig from an old boat, but in the end, I believe that without maintenance records on the rigging it is utterly impossible to determine the remaining life. Alas, just like the football World Cup, at any given time rigging issues seem to keep 99% of sailors rummaging at night, while only 1% of sailors are actually "enjoying" it (and these 1% are the ones that just installed a new one). Ah, you should receive a prize for the cleanest/tidiest anchor locker ever, smell is indeed the best selling point for replacing an old chain for a new stainless one!!

    Great episode. If I remove a chainplate bolt I replace it and its nut with a new one. For relatively (?) little expense it gives me piece of mind against missing microcracks that could prove disastrous at a most inconvenient time. Best wishes for the festive season and I look forward to following you adventures in 2023.

    • @svfairisle

      Yes, the main reason for taking them out though is to see if there has been water sitting around them and corrosion has started. If that’s the case I would pull them all and replace them.

    Hi Steve
    You guys have done well.
    I just had my 48T re-rigged, and all chain plates renewed.
    We found lots of problems with the steel itself.
    The chainplate for the inner forestay was in really bad shape. And a nightmare to change; the whole bowsprit had to be removed completely.
    Found some rot behind the two aft chain plates; again, a huge job! Anyways, I'll pick the boat up next week.
    I look forward to seeing the next video about your rigging process.
    Best and merry Xmas to you both.
    Andreas

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 года назад

      Yes you mentioned before that you had problems, so I was worried. If you have any pictures I'd be really grateful if you could send some so I have an idea of what to look out for. I haven't pulled any bolts from the aft chain plates yet. All seems good from the outside, but I'd like to see exactly where the problems on yours were so I can see if anything is developing on ours. Hope you get back sailing soon. Where do you have the boat now? Our email is sailingfairisle@gmail.com thanks, Steve

    Jade re rigged my Westerly Oceanlord last year. 1st class rigger he spotted additional problems with my spars and fitments I hadn't noticed. Will he be doing your rigging replacements? How did you manage to get him out there from North Wales?

    • @svfairisle

      It’s a tricky one that. Our viewers tend to want content completely focused on sailing. We do show some of the work we do now to the Patrons, but they are documentaries we make for charity in Africa about Female Genital Mutilation. That would really scare the viewers off! We talk about some of our previous work in the Zoom chats we do as well but that’s just a few patrons that are interested. This is a little piece we put out for the patrons after we came back from one of the trips… ruclips.net/video/Ffe-u0d2YHU/видео.html

    When you sail over open water for 2 -3 days straight, is there always one person who stays up at night watching the boat, wind and sails? How to other sailors handle this? or Solo Sailors? I know you can put the boat on auto pilot, but you wouldn't want to "auto pilot" right into another ship !!

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 года назад

      Yes there’s always someone on watch. Spotting issues with the rig is not easy though. It’s good practice to go on deck often and look around though. Jade actually recommends a system on long passages where you don’t just do a regular walking deck check looking for any faults, but you go around several times looking for specific things each time. Ie chaff in the running rigging, connections / tensions in the standing rigging etc. things are more difficult to spot at night though and we try not to go on deck if the other person is sleeping at night so checks happen less often

    • @bigguy467
      @bigguy467 2 года назад +1

      @@svfairisle Okay but what I meant was running into other boats or ships and making sure you are staying on course etc. Problems with the ropes, rigging, sails etc I would think can be made in the daytime when you obviously have more light.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 года назад

      @@bigguy467 yes in coastal sailing it’s important to have someone on watch at all times. AIS really helps but often fishing boats don’t have it and radar isn’t perfect at showing up some things. Off shore out of the shipping lanes you could give yourself 20 minute breaks if things are clear to the horizon, that’s what single handers do.
