At 3:09, you can see me in my canoe desperately trying to get out of the way of blade runner! I couldn't quite believe that when I saw it. I remember seeing you come close by Calshot.
Love the They Might Be Giants tease around 11 minutes into the video. Your older than you've ever been and now your even older.
I really enjoyed your video and always look forward to them.
You would not think it but during the First World War Folkestone Harbour was the main port of departure for soldiers and medical personnel. 10 million soldiers left from the harbour wall you were on and 1 million Red Cross workers and it was known as the ‘gateway to the trenches’.
Thanks for that history, very cool 👍
Wow!
Loved that little foiling Moth that flew by on Southampton water, pretty sure that boat was in the world championships.
Thanks for the ID.
I love your attitude. You obviously enjoy sailing and can take care of yourself. You don't have a crisis breakdown like cruisers on so many other channels. You just take care of it and move on.
You saw the Shieldhall! That's a preserved Clyde steamer that is a fixture on the Solent. Twin triple-expansion steam engines. It's a lovely ship. Not as old as you might think; just built old-style in the 50s. It was in the movie _Angelas Ashes_
Ah... I was going to see what the ship was. I liked it very much.
Glad someone out of us knows their shit. There was even a slight twinkle and man fizz when you typed it. I could tell.
I saw the Clyde steamer and at first glance I thought it was Waverly ! I'm very glad you knew it was sheild hall , cheers
sully biker is correct and the yellow funnelled ship was the sheildhall. She was used on the clyde to remove sewage out to sea . Southampton then purchased her to do the same job and dump sewage out at sea. She is now used for charters and has been completly renovated and even has a cafe.
Twotube was also correct that they saw the waverley steam paddle ship. She had the red funnel and was in the solent area at the beginning of september.
I don't think Sam likes ocean liners and historic ship. He sailed past QM2 and called a big cruise ship lol. :)
Probably the nicest bit of filming you've done yet .....well done on the editing Sam.
Thanks!
Been watching these videos for a while now and I can’t believe he stopped right where I live
A real “can do” guy. Great minute by minute videos. Really makes you feel part of the journey.
loved the Drone anchoring shots! that's a lot of work! I'm still trying to figure out my anchor setup
I add the Filter around 8:20 to 8:30 where "Thats why I say Hey man nice shot." Good drone footage of yourself screwing around with the anchor, nice work dude.
Your smile has made you the best sailing RUclips content maker. Keep smiling! We love you
That drone anchoring shot was really well done! It’s weird to see you sailing through my local sailing area, shame I didn’t see you out on the water. You should have got the paraglider out, those cliffs are all flyable.
The best sailing I ever did was around The Needles. The Solent has the best sailing on the planet, it's where I learned to sail.
Agreed!
I did my RYA competent crew certification in Port Solent.
First rate vid. Pacing, nuts -n- bolts, musical interlude, scenery. Good work.
I love that you take us on cool adventures; beautiful scenery, calming water sounds, breezes and I can feel myself on your boat. And I love the music you create to go along with it all. Thank you.
2 or 3 thousand views in an hour? You're getting there Sam Holmes, you are getting there.👍
Love those shots of your boat moving when you walked out to the bow.
Very nice..
Needles is my home playground kayaking and sailing.
I use the fuel pump bulb you squeeze that mounts on the fuel tank. works great for priming the line and you leave it in the line. Just like on an out board
Someone installed one on the inverter generator that was at our town's dump. It uses a pulse fuel pump like lawn tractors use that have under seat fuel tanks which had failed but I left the primer bulb as a back up with a set of pliers taped to the access cover. Better safe than sorry I guess.
Almost at 200k!!! Awesome!!! Keep frowning! Great vid as always!
What a wild harbor. Better keep track of the tide around there! 🍻
Awesome drone footage of you dropping the sail and anchor. pretty sweet.
Thanks!
Motor sounds much better. That was my issue, a small leak in the suction side between the tank and the pump. It was really annoying. Racors are great, I like the nalgene idea. Thanks for the video man, fair winds and following seas...
The harsh ocean sun and wind are taking a toll on Sam. He's starting to look like a longshoreman
Or perhaps a longfaceman. His beard is getting longer, and his hair is getting taller.
253rd desktop shipmate LIKE and 1900th view... especially these shots at 7:21 and always the drone footage is the favorite. More at 19:47...
and WOW! 20:42... when the tide goes out, it REALLY GOES OUT!! 21:10 these local, old village images are so cool; thanks for sharing these adventures.
Thanks
That sequence of you putting everything away with the Uke was beautiful. Happy sailing dude
Wonderful interlude with winter coming closer here. Nice footage there on shore& out at sea! Good health to you& thank you.
Thanks! I've sailed around the Isle of Wight (in the 80s) and you made it look so easy, cool and relaxed. I guess it's all about attitude and perhaps experience and knowledge? Or maybe just weather forecasts? I dunno?
Hi Sam I didn't realise you was at the needles I would of come out and said hi, we are out most weekends to the needles on our jet skies
Now that’s a Sam Holmes video, single handed engine repair!
You're coming to the Netherlands! ;-) Awesome! Wight to the Dutch coast - I must have sailed that a hundred times. Nice piece of travel!
Even though the conditions were not perfect it still made me want to toss a match on the floor as I walk out the house and drive down to the coast and never look back after buying a bigger boat.
As you were leaving the Solent you passed a building around netley where there was a huge hospital where they landed the poor sods from ww1 maybe 2 also.it had its own jetty.may of been so outbound troops didn't see them as they left from southampton.enjoy your vids cheers.
Yes it was largest building in Europe at one time and all now demolished by Soton council in the eraly 60s except for the chapel as you say - built through efforts of Florence Nightingale and Lord Palmerston for the Crimean war and after. Its said US troops drove jeeps up and down the corridors in WWII idk if thats true
@@davidbuckland6095 cheers never knew that.it oozes history of a sad kind.
in the bay there's a chair lift up to the top of the cliffs. You can also make a bottle full of different coloured sands up there..
Also the cliffs you zoomed in on with the light houses is Beachy Head
I always enjoy your playing Sam
ahh , Folkestone , My home sailing port for 18 years , quite a lot of history around this harbour , the building upon high at 21;15 was once connected to the German embassy , the arched bridge you crossed with a now defunct swing bridge once was a double track onto folkestone pier which had ferry service to france and many years ago the Netherlands . The fishing quarter you walked through has been connected wish the industry for many years , but now though surviving is very much a shadow of its former self .
Cool! I’ve ever opened one up. I learned something today.
Another great Sam Holmes Sailing video update. Thanks for sharing.
Live the views of other watercraft and scenery.
Beautiful Anchorage silhouette Sam great show
It has been a while since I last watched you and man you must have got a new camera. Looks amazing!
I couldn't help but notice the single blade for the wind turbine being shipped on that small freighter burning diesel fuel. Now considering that most turbines have three blades, that means three of those trips, plus the other ships &/or big transport trucks required to get the rest of the parts to the site. So my question is, how many years would the turbine have to produce green wind power to compensate for all of the fossil fuels expended just to get it constructed & that's not including the fossil energy required to manufacture all of those parts? At least when you're sailing, you are truly using green wind power. Keep up the great voyages Sam & best of luck for the winter with the reconstruction down in Florida (wish we were there).
Amazing drone footage!!!
I’ve had my Pacific Seacraft 34 for 25 years and I never knew that check valve was there. And my engine does lose its prime on the fuel supply so this will help - I just ordered a seal kit to take with me. 1:43
Love sailing round the Solent - great footage
That's my local river, I kayak there every week. My profile picture has the needles in the background lol. Fun fact, you probably sailed over a load of bodies because just off the needles is one of only 2 places in England that people can be buried at sea!
Sam that was a good video. The droan gives good perspective too. Hope the engine is good for the N Sea. Farrow's have some current issues. Enjoy the calm waters before your challenge going north. Cheers mate 👍
Those spliced eyes in that rope looked really good! Thanks for showing that, would like to learn to do that someday! :) Fair winds, Sam!
That was cool! You actually saw the Waverley steam paddle boat from Glasgow. She was at the boat show. It's the last sea going paddle steamer in the world! Lucky you!
so many beautiful sunsets thankyou Sam
Nice video Sam. The music was pretty special and fits well with the boat.
Fascinating thanks, great drone footage .
Sunset drone shot while reefing the sails… epic. Nice camera work sir.
Awesome video! I love the work you do on your engine.
Love watching your videos , it would be amazing to hope into a boat and go to different countries for a day or 2 then sail on , keep at it mate enjoyable to watch
Sam keep a tin of fiberglass filler on ya boat it's great for many things but it's also great for patching up holes in exhausts .. it's heat and fire proof ... if used it to fix holes in care exhausts before and the repair has out lasted the rest of the exhaust lol .. you can use it to seal up the elbow leak on yours mate 💪
Here comes the wave…yep, that’s what happens when you sail down the main channel. Small boat channel is a few 100m to your port. Hurst, where you anchored, is a great spot to overnight. And yes, check the tides or you experience the same issues as when you tried to enter Portsmouth against the tide. Conditions looked perfect (apart from the lack of wind), safe travels
Very cool shot of you at sunset setting anchor as the boat slowly drifts out of the frame
Folkestone!! My hometown. I haven't returned for ages.
The best thing by far I've ever bought for the boat was the hot water. Fully understand how good it is to feel like a human again!
Thanks again for sharing your travels. I love seeing placesI have never been :)
Hey Sam another natural great video thanks!
No it's not a german (or admirals cup) mainsheet system. That uses a single block on a cockpit traveller with the mainsheet running forward along the boom on each side then down to turning blocks on the side decks near the mast and back to cockpit winches on each side. Gives very little friction on the traveller block for ease of tacking, but is something of a pain when solo sailing.
So glad to see such comprehensive sojourn accounts even of snail sails and diesel travails. I can see you going higher tech Nikolas T. electric on a future vessel. Really fine uke interlude.
Great video, Sam… You’ve taken singlehanded sailing to a whole new level.. a little pun intended 😂😂
He's still the greatest one armed Sailor around!
That was super cool Sam. Took me right back there to the south UK coast. Special places. Cheers.
Nice video Sam 22 minutes woohoo. I assume fixing the end of the hose solved the problem. Liking to see Amsterdam.
Beautiful shots Sam. Thank you.
Thanks for the sail. I was across the state in Fl day before the hurricane hit there
Interesting video as you were sailing in my home waters. Great drone footage especially of the anchoring in Keyhaven Lake.
Add lubricant or grease to your O-Rings, and seals. It helps in more ways than one!
Great job on the splicing!!
interesting places that you visit. Thank you for taking us with you to places we may never see. ben
Southampton, the Needles. Evokes for me images of the Age of Sail, Wooden walls and Iron men.
I’ve never seen a marina that dries out at low tide. Very fascinating.
strictly only suitable for bilge keeled yachts , very sheltered except for easterly winds when it can be quite rough
I had thought a German mainsheet system is A-shaped, without a traveler, but Sam set me straight. Whatever that's called, I'm doing it on my Bristol 34.
See my comment above, the A's refer to the return from each side of boom at the gooseneck to the sidedecks before return to the cockpit winches.
@@MT-iu5ls Yes, that's going to be my setup. Do you know what it's called? I can't find much information about the pros and cons.
@@ontheruntonowhere it is a German or Admirals cup system. Main advantage is minimal friction at traveller block as only a single block.
@@MT-iu5ls I tried to find your comment, but didn't see it. You're speaking of the German system, not the A frame system, correct? I'm wondering about the disadvantages of the A frame system, if you know of any.
@@ontheruntonowhere I think you are thinking of a system with a bridle style rope traveller. Never heard it called an A system, only As I know refer to front of German system
You saw 2 of our most iconic heritage steamers! Shieldhall, an ex Glasgow sewage disposal vessel, preserved and kept afloat by volunteers and the paddle steamer Waverley that is very sucessful as an excusion steamer around the coasts of the Uk every summer. Little lighthouse on the cliff after Seven Sisters was the Belle Tout which has been moved once back inland and is threatened again now! Those cliffs towards Eastbourne are where some poor souls end their lives by jumping off!
Folkestone Harbor reminds me of old town Sacramento, CA on the river.
Heya Sam, it seems like you gotta clean that tank!! trust me it is worth it!
This was beautiful, Sam.
Sam, I just quit my job in Search of something else. Sailing, adventurebiking, flying, etc.. I'd give Anything to come sail with ya for even like a week!
Nice tune on your uke!
Sailing the east coast south on a custom 55’ thinking of going east soon
Another great video!
Sam, this HDR video is looking awesome. If possible please use it. Love it!
Hey Sam, came across your channel few months ago, thank you it’s so good, at 6.04 on this video the Waverley goes past, I thought it was based in glasgow and travels down the Clyde, it’s the last sea going paddle steamer in the world .Where did u sea it.?
i used to live in dunoon, love the sound of those paddles
@Antony Lipman thanks for replying, now I feel stupid, I live in glasgow and have been brought up with the Waverley going up and down the Clyde. I never realised it went down south. Every day is a school day, 👍Great channel, your the most chilled sailor I have ever seen, 🏴👍⛵️
@@darrenbloomfield8296 I lived in Rothesay for a few years then back to glasgow, I never realised the Waverley went down south, how embarrassing 🙈 lol . I’m looking to move back down the water.
I literally was sailing there today. That’s hilarious
What boat do you sail mate ?? I'm also local to here 😁
On fuel issues, the simplest thing to do is to change everything (hoses, clamps, filters, pick up etc) but the most likely problem is contaminated fuel). So.....get polishing your fuel ⛽
A blistering two knots, lol!🤣
Steamship Shieldhall 3:18 is kind of interesting. Built in 1954 "using technology that dated back to the last quarter of the 19th century and which was obsolete at the time of her construction" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Shieldhall
Then at 6:08 was the Paddle Steamer Waverly 1946 (even more obsolete) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS_Waverley ruclips.net/video/A7RbK6F6wn8/видео.html (The big question is why would anyone have built these ships when they did. Surely the Brits/Scots weren't building 19th century ships to fight the Germans.)
When I was in Dorset I mentioned that I'd been told my family name was from there. They looked at me like I was a complete idiot. "There's never been anyone by that name here." One of them suggested, "Maybe you're named after the Isle of Wight." Which at the time made absolutely no sense to me. "Nettles...." When I got interested in sailing I put it together.
And watch those exhaust fumes, while less than gasoline engines "Carbon monoxide makes up anywhere from 2% to 12% of diesel exhaust gases."
At 20:20 is an Antony Gormley sculpture www.weekendnotes.co.uk/anthony-gormley-iron-man-folkestone/ In Oxford there are figures like this standing ominously on the tops of buildings, and the huge Angel of the North (near Newcastle) is also by him.
at 22:18 is a Martello Tower built to watch for Napoleon invading. These are also all over the Irish coast. Your chart says Martello Tower #3, Google Maps has #4 and #5.
Hope your grandma's place is coming along. Let her know her grandson is liked and admired by 200,000 people.
(And sorry to be such a busy body/know it all. Travel writer Paul Theroux wrote about such a character as being a total jerk.... 'the traveler wants to discover things for themselves,' (paraphrase). I recognized myself. It still hurts.... )
Best comment, thanks for the tour and bit of history. I was wondering what that paddle steamer was
Nice score on the free Gill merch from the boat show. I'd like to know your thoughts on the Revolve folding boat hook.
So close to 200k subscribers!
That looked like a great sailing day
Wish I could do this 👌chilled on the brain no worries just relaxing to the un known 👌👌
Living the Dream😁
I saw my little hurley 22 moored just outside ocean village, shame i didnt know you were here
It's spooky seeing all those boats aground.
Folkestone is where most of the British Army embarked for France during WW1. There is still an army camp on the heights above the town. Prob best not to fly a drone near a lighthouse
