Hi, great video. Our first sailboat was a 1986 Catalina 22. We bought it in 1988 and sailed it on a small inland lake in Southern Ohio. The brochure said "it sleeps five"....I told my wife "four of them better be pretty cute". 😎 Anyway, we sailed that lake from March to November on our Catalina 22, then our Hunter 25, then our Hunter 27. We retired, sold our house in ohio and in florida and bought a 1976 Pearson 365 ketch in 2002. Weve been cruising full-time for 22 years on the Pearson and have been from Nove Scotia to Grand Turk. Were slowing down now, im 78 and shes 77 but we're still sailing thousands of miles a year. My point is that there's a line that runs from your weekend Catalina 22 to a full-time cruising sailboat dream. Good luck and enjoy the adventure. Steve&Judy s/v Norne Gaest
I echo all the positive comments below. I had a San Juan 21, followed by a Cat 22 in Miami when I was 25-27. Then I married a non-sailor, sold the Cat and haven't sailed much since. Now, I'm retired, still married to the non-sailor, but now I have grandkids and they think "Big Pa Pa" should get another trailerable sailboat, which I will be doing shortly.
Loved the ending! 13:00 Its too true. Some people wait their whole lives for the "right moment" to make their dreams come true and often that moment never comes. Life is a struggle but a beautiful ride either way. Keep up with the great content. Hope to buy my own sailboat soon :)
Hello, I have been enjoying a 1986 C-22 for about 19 years now. Some suggestions, the pop top is an interesting feature BUT make absolutely certain that it's fastened tight. You would not want it coming down on someone's fingers. Some users have added gas struts to make it safer. We have a swing keel and I used to dock in a more exposed but shallow part of our lake. Because it was shallow, I had to have the swing keel up either part way or all the way up a good part of the summer. The problem with doing that is that the turning ball will saw through the keel cable because of the cable tension and small lateral movements of the keel. I've had to replace that cable several times. Now that I'm docked in a deeper marina, the cable has been fine for about 10 years. You do not want that keel cable to snap and have the keel drop. Your old style looks to be in beautiful condition. 🙂
I'm starting up sailing and on the marlek for a 22ft. There's a few options here in Australia, but I think what you said in the end is very true and certainly one of the reasons I'm looking at a trailer sailer... as the Pardey's coined 'Go small, go simple, go now'.
I love your boat & all the cool suggestions. Thank you for this. My hubby sailed out of Montreal as a young man. Farming in Saskatchewan, he wanted a sailboat for years. In 2012 he found a boat much like yours on kiji. Named it "Finally". It's been such fun.
Thanks for all the info and tour of your sweet little sail boat. This looks like the perfect size for someone just starting. The end of your video was a great advice, don't wait, have fun now!
I just bought a Catalina 22. Grew up cruising and been racing crew now for a few years, but this is my first boat! I love seeing your Catalina videos keep it up

Thanks for the tour. All the Catalinas are nice, even the smallest ones. V-berth is the word. The side stays are called shrouds. Ropes are called lines when used on a boat. Not trying to be rude. It's important to have the right names for things to avoid confusion.

Haha yea, If you make an error in a title during the video you can’t go back and fix it later or you just have to live with it LOL! Sounds like you have your boat set up well I certainly have respect for anything that makes being out there a little bit easier!
Great review of the boat mate! Just bought a Catalina 22 last week and have loved watching your videos! Despite never sailing before in my life I am currently teaching myself on the Sunshine Coast of Australia - couldn't agree more with the mantra of not waiting, just doing :D Keep up the good work
Thank you for a great review. you have such a great voice and so easy to listen to. I'm making my dreams come true. I bought a 23ft amf sailboat. Just motor sailed only a few times last summer. Now it is the last of march 2021 and im working on the boat getting it all ready for a early launch in early May in lake huron. You are so right life is to short to put your dreams off for later. Dream it now and do it now. Keep the great videos coming.
These are super popular boats to train on, see them everywhere in San Diego... Nice little boat, not a fan of Porta-Potty but expected for a 20ft daysailer...
Great video! Hope you are still living your dream now after 3 years since this video was published. I am at the beginning of my sailing journey and videos like this are a true inspiration!
You will have over $1,000,000.00 worth of fun on that $3,000 (total ) ? Boat. You are blessed beyond measure plus Suzy still loves you after the Big Boom went Bang. LOL 😂 Take care, enjoy life, stay safe. 🙏👍✌️😎
Great channel your vibe and approach is excellent. As you said, you are reading a great book. John Kretschmer is a legend in the sailing community. He had to share his story with books before the internet. He has several more excellent reads.
Thanks for sharing about your boat. I'm looking for a Catalina 22 like yours. Would love to see more overnight sails. Also a good topic would be about what you had to learn the hard way about sailing. Just the unexpected things. Thanks for the videos.
Great comment... I read that out-loud to my wife (the part about what I learned the hard way) and she exclaimed "everything!". I'll incorporate this into a video I'm doing right now, so thanks for the idea.
Sailed as a kid but didn't own. WindSurfer like Alpha later but near river instead of Kitty Hawk, NC USA, so not much wind to use. Some good info, could use compare with catamarans, new foils, general house boat life stuff... Water keel balast seen on one, seemed advantageous, maybe dual (fresh/salt) bladder system for longer fresh water cruising/crossing...
Thanks for the tour. C-22 are great boats. I sent you an e-mail with pics of our boat up in Tarpon....not sure if you got it. See you out there sometime
How did you wire in the electrical, the fuse block, and the panel with the USB ports? I would really like to learn how to do this, but I would appreciate some instruction!
The little panel is just two wires, positive and negative, low voltage since it's just USB and volt meter. Very simple. If I did it again, I would not install the giant on/off switch it's not necessary. The fuse block is standard and comes on the boat.
@@AdventuresInParadise thanks! I’m not certain if our South Coast 22 has that or not, it was a gift and I haven’t been inside the cabin yet, the thing needs tons of work. I’m kind of hoping it does have a fuse block inside of it.
....thanks for all the Catalina videos....I know you have sold the Catalina but your videos have been such an inspiration that I am in the market for a Catalina 22....I have sailing experience on a Sunfish and Aquacat catamaran....plus recently sold my Trojan 36 twin engine cabin cruiser....so hope to pick up a Catalina 22 as soon as a reasonably priced one comes up for sale near me ....
Might just be the best review I've seen on a sailboat! You could have 10 people up there! You can have 10 people down here. 10 people in the cockpit, no problem! Haha, so good! Your Final thought about dreams 💜! Thanks so much, really enjoyed this! Looking at one right now!
I love this boat and your channel! I just finished my first sailing class, and I would like to know if you took a Selah class or if you just jumped in and bought this beauty? Also, are there any ceiling clubs in your area? I would like to get back down to Florida, but I only know South Florida and there is not a lot of sailing clubs over there. Thanks! I love the island series by the way!
With the Catalina 22 we just went for it. I read a book or two and watched sailing videos for nearly a year before. We sold that and now we have an OO'day 28 - see the later videos. Check out key lime sailing in the Florida Keys... you get a Catalina 22 with your room for a week and it's a good deal.
@@AdventuresInParadise I will look for the O’Day video. I heard you all mention it in one of the vids I watch yesterday. Excuse the error above, I meant sailing. I’m currently learning on The Elizabeth River. Thanks for your reply. 😊
I really enjoyed your video. I just got done taking classes 101,103 and 104. I live just north of Tampa wondering what would be the best way to get more time on the water. Do you recommend a sailing club in this area? and I’m looking at possibly buying a small sailboat just to get started and to definitely get some practice.
I highly recommend cutting your own plexiglas windows rather than resealing the old ones. It’s basically more trouble than it’s worth to try and get those sealed. Also, plexiglas looks sleek af. Took 30 years off the look of my Catalina 25!
I’m Curious about the sitting headroom in the Catalina 22? How tall all are you? I’m 6’1 and want to be able to sit upright in the cabin at the table. Thx. I enjoyed the video. Dave
I'm 6' tall and my hair touches. I can't sit comfortably in the bow-facing seat due to the angled wall behind it unless I sit with my head out the companionway opening. I think you could probably sit in the rear facing seat in at the table. It's all kind of cramped in a boat this size but I've learned where to sit where I fit.
G'day. Is an Australian greeting and i say it to everyone who i chat with. G'day. I am Gerard. My first boat was a trailer sailer called an jedda 22. I actuly lived on that little boat for about 5 years then i whent into small catamarans and my current boat is relly small. its an 20 ft red baron. and i am currently living on it in an marina in Queensland. i have found an lager boat but i have to wait for the borders to open as we are still in lockdown even though the regs are lifting borders in Australia are closed. I learned a lot from living on board boats and it dose not matter weather you have a small boat or an large one. The main things to remember is that the smaller boat is easyer to owen and manage on an low income, and that you are both happy on the boat. Gerard from Qld, Australia.
@@AdventuresInParadise G'day. Thanks for your reply. I began to owen my first boat the jedda 22 way back in 2002. Its now 2020 and i am still enjoying my time on the water, and traveled before the lockdown however, there are still places I have not yet explored and thats why i am looking at an lager sailing boat, possibly after we get the all clear and the boarders are reopen. Gerard.
You should mate best thing I have done I got a 23 foot helcoyn fin keel. Had it 1 month now doing the interior hope you get your boat. Best advice to give is be willing to learn how to do your own painting , antifoul and service . Not difficult I learn from RUclips that will bring the maintenance cost down
Cool little boat, except for the head facilities. The sail area looks small - how fast is a normal passage? Do you ever hit six or seven knots? Sadly, my partner has some physical limitations that keep us ashore. I get to sail vicariously with the fine people like you who share their experiences. Seems like there are a ton of Catalina 22s. Do the Florida no-see-ums bother you close to shore? Thanks for posting.
We've seen a little more than five knots, usually more like 3-4. We don't see any no-see-ums - not even on land... and I've lived here since 1991. Maybe they're more inland, not sure but even when we go camping we don't see or feel them. Thanks for watching!
I can lay up there and I'm six feet tall, but it's too hard to get in and out - I think kids only. It's nicer to sleep where the table is, if you have to sleep on this boat.
Oh sh*t, a Modelo. I can't watch anymore of this. Jk. I'm about to start my life aboard a cat 27 or 25. Great insight, plus you raised the questing of if my beer is going to be available everywhere. Coors by the way. 🤣🤣
How tall are you? You look taller than me. Do you happen to have the dimensions of the dinette berth when converted to "berth". I am 5'10" and have my eye on one of these, cheap. Same layout as yours.
I'm an inch taller than you and my hair touched the ceiling when seated. You'll fit when sleeping but it's a lot like staying the night in a parked car.
The small boats have their charm. Would you wish for a larger one or is it to much maintenance, costs etc? Maybe it trends with tiny houses to have a small sailing boats too
How tall are you for reference?lol asking as I'm 6' 2" but this looks like a really decent starter boat, and I'm on the look out for my gf and myself and struggle with reference in regards to that 😅
@AdventuresInParadise cheers for that, gives me a good reference as I watch all your future exploits! Love the content, very informative, and I hope to see you guys on the water some day! Love from Cape Coral!
Just curious, is the gas tank in the locker safe? I've read that because of venting and loose gas fumes etc you don't want it venting into the hull of the boat. Gas tank lockers are supposed to be completely sealed off. Is that locker sealed off? Is the tank some special outside venting tank?
This is how pre-1986 Catalina 22's were made and it hasn't been an issue with thousands of them made, so I guess it works. I suppose if you had a gas leak you might. The compartment is vented above the tank. This compartment was changed to a sealed off version on '86 and after models, along with other improvements.
We have a pop top catalina 22. we have water leaking in on the port side. it clollects (and over fills) the light thats above the shelf above the table. we removed and resealed the windows. we pour water allover the boat nothing comes in. but we leave it in the rain and water comes in. any ideas?
Mine's a 1984. The 2nd generation came out in 1896. Price depends on condition, average older boats can be $3,00-$6,000 and you'll see them higher or lower depending on how we they're cared for. They're easy to find as they were the most popular small sailboat.
Just curious, did you name your channel on the tv series "Adventures in Paradise"? The 85' schooner Tiki was a pretty nice sailing vessel and if you've never seen it, you should check it out.
@@AdventuresInParadise A little escapism in these troubled times could be therapeutic. The only problem is that most of the copies floating around are not very good quality. The premise that an ex navy guy with this beautiful schooner, out of Pape'ete Tahiti, hauling cargo and getting into adventures was a fun story line. Fair winds and following seas.
That rigging sound in the wind reminds me of many weekends of my chilhood on my dad's boats. It the marina's concerto. Tink-tink-tink-tink interspersed with the whistle of the wind. I didn't mind it at all.

Gerard from Qld,
Australia.
Wow, that's so great! Thank you for your comment!

G'day.
Thanks for your reply.
I began to owen my first boat the jedda 22 way back in 2002. Its now 2020 and i am still enjoying my time on the water, and traveled before the lockdown however, there are still places I have not yet explored and thats why i
am looking at an lager sailing boat, possibly after we get the all clear and the boarders are reopen.
Gerard.
Hey mate, just found your channel, love it! I live in Dunedin, been thinking about getting a small sailboat as well!
Thanks! If you'd be interested in this boat, email me at adventuresinparadiseFL@gmail.com
You should mate best thing I have done I got a 23 foot helcoyn fin keel. Had it 1 month now doing the interior hope you get your boat. Best advice to give is be willing to learn how to do your own painting , antifoul and service . Not difficult I learn from RUclips that will bring the maintenance cost down
How is living in Dunedin? COVID and family down near you have us thinking about sooner rather than later.
Catalina wine mixer!
Birth is painful. Berth is for sleeping.....Just saying. Loved your video...Thanks.
So dam cute. Love the decor
10:20 "lathed" or "turned" wood. Carry on. Your content and narrative are exceptional.
Thanks for the upload 😀
Its really nice!!💯
Thanks for the encouragement
Such boat. Very beam. Many waterline. Wow
Perfect words at the end of the video
I’m getting “boat fever”.
what is the make and model of the solar blue tooth speaker?
Thanks for the video! I've been looking at one, and trying to figure out how long the berths are, can you tell me? Cheers!
I can lay up there and I'm six feet tall, but it's too hard to get in and out - I think kids only. It's nicer to sleep where the table is, if you have to sleep on this boat.
@@AdventuresInParadise thank you! My best guy friends are both 6'1", and want them to want to come with me on adventures. 👍
Oh sh*t, a Modelo. I can't watch anymore of this. Jk. I'm about to start my life aboard a cat 27 or 25. Great insight, plus you raised the questing of if my beer is going to be available everywhere. Coors by the way. 🤣🤣
You mean 10 tiny little Hobbits people. LOL
@@AdventuresInParadise Thank you sincerely sir.
Great video!
Thanks!
The small boats have their charm. Would you wish for a larger one or is it to much maintenance, costs etc? Maybe it trends with tiny houses to have a small sailing boats too
We got a larger sailboat now.. see our newer videos. It's definitely more cost and maintenance, but more room is great.
Nice! But those hook bungy cords can be leathal. Might wanna safer alternative.
so are we just not going to address 3:41?
Good sail boat and good English 👍
Sailboat vs regular cabin boat? Pro and con?
hey that's a good idea and now we have a cabin cruiser, so I think I'll do that!
How tall are you for reference?lol asking as I'm 6' 2" but this looks like a really decent starter boat, and I'm on the look out for my gf and myself and struggle with reference in regards to that 😅
6'. You'll be right on the top when seated. My hair touched it so I don't think it would work, but you could just go look at one and try it.
"You could put two people in there" (next to the fuel tank) what are you doing? Transporting dead bodies?
I subscribed
Amen to that Brother! I got mine dream boat! Fuck what anybody thinks about it.
Did you remove the portable head?
The porta potty would be something you' d have to add. Never had one.
We have a pop top catalina 22. we have water leaking in on the port side. it clollects (and over fills) the light thats above the shelf above the table. we removed and resealed the windows. we pour water allover the boat nothing comes in. but we leave it in the rain and water comes in. any ideas?
Be inside the boat when it's raining. We did this and found the source of leaks. Make sure it's all dry first and then look everywhere while it rains.
hello, I follow your channel, could you explain how you raise and lower the mast please, I want to learn how to do it alone
I've never raised or lowered the mast. A crane would be needed for the O'day but the Catalina 22 can be lowered by hand. Maybe you meant the sail?
Wich year of production and how much is it to get one like this approximate $?
Mine's a 1984. The 2nd generation came out in 1896. Price depends on condition, average older boats can be $3,00-$6,000 and you'll see them higher or lower depending on how we they're cared for. They're easy to find as they were the most popular small sailboat.
Just curious, did you name your channel on the tv series "Adventures in Paradise"? The 85' schooner Tiki was a pretty nice sailing vessel and if you've never seen it, you should check it out.
Never saw it, but we named it when we were making our camper restoration series. I checked it out online - looks interesting.
When you sleeping at night , what about ships ?
So how tall are you? Wondering if I'd have more or less room haha
Edit: looks like around 6ft from another comment
Ropes on a sailboat are called lines, just FYI. 👍
I enjoy your videos only wish you would have tagged each video with episode 1,2,3 ect so we wouldn’t be jumping around but good stuff thanks
I'm thinking of going back and numbering them.... thanks for the comment.
what year is your boat?
1984
Your electric is not too small to have a 12 volt chest freezer. ECO mode will make the compressor last forever.
where do you go to the bathroom?
