      Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind
      Withering my intuition leaving opportunities behind

      Urging me to cross the line
      Reaching out to embrace the random
      Reaching out to embrace whatever may come
      No warning. We are being told to over think and over analyze. Question everything. That's what we also get from the golden ratio. 987 is the Fib number, just if anyone is interested, looked it up. The song is amazing (Lateralus), not only did Maynard use Fib numbers/sequence for the syllables of the lyrics, but the lyrics themselves "Spiral out, keep going..." and when you map out fib numbers in a quadrant it makes a spiral (seen at 3:15). Of course there's more to the lyrics and meaning behind them than "Fibonacci was cool" it is about opening yourself up more and more to the world and feelings and emotions and to take it all on with an embracing attitude. Spiral out, keep going!

    This from an old Adam Jones interview in Kerrang: "Well, on that song, Justin brought in a riff, and Danny saw it had a connection to the Fibonacci, so he started trying to work in elements of it.
    Then Maynard came in and we started telling him about the sequence. It came from trying to relate to those things in life or nature we all have in common." - In other words, not only was it not Maynard's idea (it was Danny's), Maynard was mathematically illiterate to the extent that he needed to be explained what the Fib sequence was.

    They’re touching on the “golden ratio”. From my discrete mathematics textbook: in the worlds of art and architecture, the golden ratio is thought to create aesthetically pleasing proportions. The golden ratio is (1+sqrt(5))/2, or 1.6180339... and it’s value is approached by the ratio of two consecutive Fibonacci numbers F(n+1)/F(n) for larger and larger values of n. For example, 21/13 is 1.615, and 1597/987 is 1.618034 etc. The Fibonacci numbers are just what’s called a recursive relation, and although many think the 13th century merchant and mathematician Fibonacci discovered this sequence, Leonardo of Pisa (Fibonacci) only introduced Western European mathematicians to it. The idea actually started in Indian mathematics in Vedic studies many years before Fibonacci existed.

    Despite being my birth month & year (9/86), it is still a shame that this wasn't episode #987, just for the further Fibonacci Sequence + 'Lateralus' coincidences that would entail. For those who don't know, there is more on that below:
    "For me, the song 'Lateralus' was the turning point. I wrote a bar of nine, a bar of eight, and a bar of seven, and we originally called the song '987.' I saw it as something that kept getting shorter and shorter and, like a spiral, it kind of folds in on itself. And Maynard had no idea what I was thinking when he went to track the vocals. But as the song's folding and changing, he's singing about the idea of a spiral and how you're basically trying to achieve something that's never been achieved and you have to keep reaching for something that you don't understand. I thought that was an incredible synchronicity. Then a friend said, 'Justin, do you realize that 987 is the 16th number of the Fibonacci sequence? It's the mathematical equation for a spiral.' I'm not the most spiritual person, but all that stuff was almost like a reward for all our efforts, and I felt like it got us back on track."

    So funny; he thinks the way he wrote Lareralus is akin to a teenager thinking his poems in high school were so deep back then but in hindsight they're just emotional teenage angst garbage, when most of us who are barely comprehending how he comes up with songs are in awe of how he came up with that song. There's literally a 13 minute video deconstructing how he came up with that song and how masterful it is and here he is blasting it.

    After The Burial have a song called Pi and it's fascinating because they used every number in the 3.14...sequence as beats per bar. They wrote a formula just to write that song. They even play it live perfectly

      Charles Bryan
      Right. He had it backwards here. Its a measure of 9 then 8 then 7. But his lyrics are sung in progressive fib starting with 1 (based on syllables)
      Black---1
      Then---1
      White are-2
      All I see--3
      In my infancy-5
      Red and yellow then came to be-8
      Reachin out to me-5
      Lets me see--3
      Counts up to 8 then counts back down

      Weird. Because I didn't notice it was backwards when I first heard it. But the backwards bit 987 is a Fibonacci number. I know about the Fibonacci sequence in the lyric syllables. I think that is one of the testaments to the genius of Tool. At least one other testament would be the music. :)

      These lyrics are like explaining the big-bang theory with phi ratio. First everything was empty space which is black in this reality. Then an insane explosion brings white which is light in this case. The material creation starting because of the ohm between gap/emptiness and this incredibly powerful and heavy light, then light breaks on the created material and explosions, colours starting to shine as red and yellow. And then the other colours with billions of explosions.
      There is so much more
      And beckons me to look through to these infinite possibilities

      Actually, looking at this, it seems close to symbolic language from the Alchemist process. Look it up if you like. The colors represent the stages in the process, which is about realisation of the Self, the unification of lower and higher spheres within a given context like the personality. Just after this part the section begins with "As above so below" which is a line from the Emerald Tablet, a centerpiece of the Corpus Hermeticum as found in Nag Hammadi. Hermetic philosophy is about alchemy, which is a spiritual, magical and esoteric path

    • @Drontenpeel
      @Drontenpeel 6 лет назад +7

      Which seems to fit with the thelemic symbolism I distinguish clearly in a photo on a video about the Tool Album update februari 2018 (ruclips.net/video/8GPu216GW3o/видео.html) . Aleister Crowley introduced this symbol into western esotericism. He was a former member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, he started an aligned filosofical and magickal school on the principles of Thelema. He was a self proclaimed magician and an example to many big names in pop culture (and still is). The symbol represents the acting upon your authentic Will, which can be identified with the Divine Spark of Gnosticism: the Knowledge of the Heart. These schools and teachings are deeply linked with Hermetica and Alchemy.

    • @jordan-wb2hb
      @jordan-wb2hb 6 лет назад +9

      Dillon MacPherson I actually did understand that he was talking about people with Down’s & people who’ve had facial plastic surgery in relation to the Fibonacci sequence, but it’s not like that it makes it okay. The way he insulted people’s looks because of a disability and because of surgery - which, there are lots of different plastic surgeries & it’s not like they’re all necessarily gonna be super noticeable anyway or probably fewer people would get them because sometimes - and his “no offense” after he knew he’d said something really mean & fucked up was bullshit. I didn’t have a problem with the rest of the interview from what I remember (I’m busy & not watching it again right now), but that part was really fucked. I’ve been a big Tool fan & APC fan for years and years, I also try to be a decent human being, & I’m also disabled (though I don’t have Down syndrome) so I’m not gonna just be chill when someone’s being a prick, even if I love their music. Disagree if you want, whatever.

    I think Maynard was referring to how it works in a piece of music/notation for a moment there, while he’s a writer/lyricist, vocalist and performer, rather than someone who writes music like Adam can do in his sleep.

      Nish Kirtikar I just got in an argument with somebody over a youtube comment (which I should know better than to do by now) that reading music and being musically educated is not required to make good music, and, of course, this guy was arguing otherwise, while dismissing pretty much every legendary rock musician from Hendrix to just about every punk band to Nirvana. I just still can't believe there are people who think being musically educated matters. I always use this example, but look at Joy Division, Bernard Sumner could barely play his guitar, but he made it work and Joy Division is one of the best bands ever.

      Glenda Danzig you are trying desperately to cling to an idea that suggests study does not enhance comprehension, which says to me that you either cannot afford or cannot squeeze the ambition from your existence to further your studies. Good luck

  • @CaptainTittus

    That song made me start to think when I was young I don't quite understand why he would say it's almost like a dick joke theres more than just the damn Fibonacci sequence in that song

    • @timh35
      @timh35 6 лет назад +14

      He seems to think what he did was lame by forcing the lyrics of the song into the sequence, I don't think he is referring to or even thinking about anything besides lyrics. As much as i like the guy, something feels like he is just saying its lame because of how much praise he/they get for the idea and execution of the idea.

    • @CaptainTittus
      @CaptainTittus 6 лет назад +2

      i somewhat understand, he even says it but doesn't really elaborate beyond saying the dick joke. by saying that he could have done better (i just personally take the Fibonacci aspect of the song as cool ah thats something different kind of thing and captivates me a little but im more focused on what hes talking about that why i praise the song) also ive never walked in the guys shoes so i have no clue how many people have told him that, maybe that was the best part of the song for them and after hearing it for so many years it just started to eroded his views on the song as a hole? after hearing it so many times but either way thank you for the great response

      His point is that phi is everywhere. We're all living in it. It's innate. He feels it was a dick move to so boldly point it out in a song like that and then have everyone turn around and call him a genius for it. When really it's something we're all already very familiar with, whether consciously or not.
