I am Filipino and so is my partner. We both watched this twice to give this movie a chance. The first time we watched without sub-titles and the second time with English subtitles as we thought we may be missing something in translation. I had to reflect on other great horror movies and what made them great. I think the problem with this movie is it was trying to be too many things and the audience got lost Filiipino or not. I did not know if it was a ghost movie, a slasher film, time travel movie, an aswang (Filipino.vampire) movie, a werewolf movie and (or) a recreation of Nocebo with the chick trying to ride on that movie's popularity. It was very hard to follow. .Your interpretation and comments are accurate. I think Filipinos don't do horror well at least not this movie. I felt sad for Piolo to be involved with this production. It is not good unfortunately. The only thing that was good was to watch sexy Piolo. He makes Filipino and Asian men sex symbols in cinema. I also thought of good horror films and what came to mind was the original Exorcist. with Linda Blair. That movie scared me because there was a story that made sense, better flow in story telling and it wasn't super complicated. Mallari had too many themes going on and characters. The Exorcist I think was scarier because it is the classic battle between good (the priest) and evil (the demon) inside Linda Blair. The idea of demonic possession embodied in an innocent girl was far scarier and relatable. Nocebo is also an excellent horror movie maybe a better movie to compare Mallari. Nocebo has better story telling. it had a plot, an origin story, perfect execution and an interesting conclusion.

I'm amazed you gave this movie a chance. Haven't finished this movie yet. Maybe will give it a go when I find the patience or in the mood. Your raw reaction style is actually what drew me to the channel, so you and Kali should just keep on keeping on.

Hiya! Awesome review. I am on the same boat. I don't hate it, but I am fascinated. Also, through this movie is how I learned that Fr. Juan Severino Mallari was an actual person who was hanged for the murders.
It was a lot for me to unpack due to the concepts. However, it was a fun wild ride and I excuse the horrible CGI. I think it adds to the fun.
I watched it in the original language and understood what was going on, but it was still a lot. I would give it a 7 out of 10. It is not bad. Piolo Pascal did an amazing performance in my opinion. I would watch it again after processing it.
It's awesome to hear it from a different perspective as in someone who is not familiar with the culture. It is understandable on how it can be overwhelming. I am glad you gave it a chance.

It was trying to be a lot of things..too many concepts and ideas in one film to the point it got very confusing. For me they should have just stick to the orginal plot. Take out the the astral part of it. Even the Jonrey character. Just Jonathan and Father Severino.
