Really good game this! The only thing I don't like is, I believe they made it a 32 bit application. This means it is limited to only about 2.5 - 4GB of ram usage, therefore the performance in the end game can slow down considerable if your galaxy is big. I wish they would release a 64 bit version, but you can't sell that, so they probably will not. Oh well, still a good game though!

Paradox, in general, spends a good amount of budget in getting a good soundtrack, featuring good, mostly lesser know musicians. Surviving Mars also has a good soundtrack, so do CK2 and EU4 haha
You can win a fight against bigger fleets if you fit your ships right. I like to usually have a primary combat fleet specifically built against each of my neighbours. And then I have support fleets that are smaller and more generally fitted that do the patrols on the peace time while the primary combat fleets sit at the station close to the neighbor they have been built against. Like if you have a race that seem to favor lasers and shields on their ships then just fit yours with shields and mass drivers and you will absolutely wreck their fleets Also setting the combat roles is key too. I always have bigger ships at range hurling fire at enemies, then have ships fitted with point defense creating a missile shield for them while the smaller ones go in close to harrass the enemy. Or maybe this just shows again how deep this game is. There is possibility to use fleet tactics and fit ships accordingly, it is not just a numbers game. Like it never is in any of Paradox games even if it might seem that way at first glance. Even in CK2 you can affect your army composition, tactics, generals and place of battle to win against a much bigger enemy. And ship designing is one of my favourite parts of this game. Never use auto-best and just keep updating them myself. 😅
I awoke my species psychic potential and took over my federation by changing the succession rules to be by challenge every 40 years a psychic challenge but since we where the only psychics we auto win.
this would be an excellent recommendation 50 days ago when we first went into lockdown! Of course, unlike some people, work continues for me. It was a mistake for me to try this. I went down the rabbit hole when I should have been sleeping or working or taking care of my kids. Thanks a lot, Mack.
I can't believe the amount of DLC on this game, Mack... Surprised you didn't even mention the $100+ of DLC they've churned out to make the game "complete". Not that it's a bad game. It just a good game sold in small pieces, like most Paradox games.
Hey Mack! It's true that on average you win battles you have more firepower at, but not always. As you understand mechanics better, you can builld your fleets to be punching above their weight against enemy fleet and win encounters that you have lower score of fleet strength. Thanks for covering Stellaris!
This is a great game that I keep coming back to every few years. Going off of Mack's point that the game is very deep, and as a slight counter-point to his notion that fleet combat is a number's game, I'll add that a ship's hit points are composed of hull, armor, and shield points, and that every weapon has different effectiveness against those three types of hit points. You can win a battle against a fleet with higher combat values by researching and installing the proper components that will take advantage of your opponent's fleet composition. It's a bit of "rock, paper, scissors," and is a fun piece of the game if you like to micro-manage your R&D and ship design against the next alien empire you plan on warring against. Great fun.
If you like micromanaging stuff, check out Aurora 4x, it's a free game made by one person and it's regarded as one of the best 4x games out there, be warned it's a mega ton more deep than Stellaris, it's really deep, but very satisfying at the same time
while it is a numbers game, like most grand strategy games, the more you play, the better you get. You can min max your fleet efficiency by countering enemy compositions which can make a noticeable difference and you can win outnumbered fights.
I loved Stellaris, been playing it since the beginning. I gave up it on a while ago though as I felt like the quality and depth was declining. Earlier you could form alliances with other nations which is how it should work, the last I saw you have to join federations. War is restricted as well, used to be able to launch war to liberate conquered planters and create new nations out of them if you won. Now it’s just about taking over a factions claimed systems.
I mean there's an absolutely crazy amount of mods on the workshop, I know theres a few that add more justifications for going to war for example. The modding community is one of the best things about this game, more active now than ever.
"Combat is a numbers game" I agree. But you can win if you make a specific build to counter theirs. For instance, if they have higher level lasers but lower-level mass drivers, equip more shields, vice versa.
I play this with my two friends once in a while. I think we've started at least 100 games we didn't finish lol. Usually happens when there's a few days or a week disruption in the play schedule. I have no idea why.
I finished my first game after 650 hours of playtime. the late game slowdown has put me off finishing a full game. The first 80% of the game takes just as much time as the last 20% :/

You pretty much need all of them except species packs or you'll be locked out from whole game mechanics. It's a very pricey game. It's good if you can afford it though. But very frustrating to see greyed out buttons because you lack DLC. The AI still gets to use DLC features you're locked out off, of course.
@@trollgemomo3823 Megacorp isn't essential, unless you want to focus on trading and making Energy credits. Such a great game and such a deserving sponsorship. Small word of warning for anyone picking up the free weekend. I'm pretty sure it won't include any of the DLC packs (I might be wrong), and in true Paradox style the 4 years of DLC packs have transformed this game into one of the best 4x games ever made, but without them the base game is a bit...meh. So I'd take the free weekend as more of a demo rather than a chance to see the whole game. To get anywhere near the full experience of this game you need the content pack DLCs but they're usually pretty cheap and absolutely worth it.
If you wanna try it out a bit simplified , it's on gamepass (console)and the dlcs are cheaper there i believe , it looks overwhelming when you start but if you watch a small guide or just play along it's pretty easy to get into.
To be honest, the only thing that stops me from buying Stellaris right now is the lack of any season pass/GOTI edition or possibility to buying a game with all the add-ons at once. Paradox's DLC policy does not allow me to start enjoying their beautiful games.
Well over 1k hours in this game. It's great! Fighting isn't just a numbers game though, there are different load outs you can outfit your ships to counter others and some star systems can even give certain fleets and edge. Some people have won without even building a single ship. Highly recommended.
And then you discover mods, learn definitions, rules, effects and triggers and really start on the "whatever you want" road. Want to play Fallen Empires, Marauders, Primitives, Space Whales, Crisis? No problemo. The shear volume of DLCs might seem bit daunting at first but after you realize this is one of those games one can easily play for years they spread out and it's not too bad. It does limit MP opportunities unfortunately. The only thing I really miss is a game mode where one can have complete control over tech research but even that can be simulated by tweaking a line in defines and few in tiers.
Tried it briefly and had no idea what was going on, I've played this before but it's nothing like I remember. Getting in game messages which mean nothing to me at all and in game help is useless. Too complicated, don't have time of patience for this. On paper this should be the type of game I would love, but meh... Congrats on the sponsor though. :-)
Great game with fantastic writing. Love being able to create whatever kind of race I want, and all the stories and quests I come across are really interesting and well written. Only cons for me are there's a lot of expansions, it's hard to know whats necessary and what isn't which can drive the price up a bit (they are all on sale now though so this doesn't affect it quite so much) Also it does seem a bit intimidating at first because of how deep it is. Aside from that, loved sinking around 60 hours into this so far
This is different though, Paradox does support the games with the money they earn with the DLC sales. Unlike EA, Paradox doesn't run away with a pile of cash after 2 years to make a sequel to cash in again. CK2 was supported for 8-9 years, it's getting it's sequel this year. It the last 8 years I have lost count on how many Call of duties and Battlefields have been made
@@NotGoingToNeedAHandle True, but remember, every day the Paradox dev teams are in the studio it costs them thousends of dollars. Supporting a game for 8 years, developing extra content, free and dlc content, isn't cheap. You have to make a choice, pay extra for the long term support, many updates and improvements, or have them make many sequals and the improvements they make only get used in the sequel. I rather pay for DLC than be forced to pay for a sequel, atleast now I get a choice on what content I find more important. It sure isn't cheap, but remember there have been 4 COD games released whilst Stellaris was released. That's 240 bucks for Cod, in the sale you can get Stellaris with all the DLC for less than that.
Nothing is "Required" they all add depth to certain parts of the game, however, Aspec makes good DLC guides every time a new one comes out. Take a look at his video's, he can be very helpful! The DLC isn't as bad as EU4s DLC
I've been on the fence about playing (own the game, but seemed very overwhelimg), and after this I'm all in. Thanks Mack for turning my gaze back to this!
I'm really worried it's going to not have the same soundtrack, voice acting, and probably include some stupid ass cover mechanic. God, I hope i'm wrong. Mafia 1 means the world to me.

Stellaris is definitely worth a try on this free weekend, they just released another free (anniversary patch that adds some cool new thing) but sadly, they have reintroduced the stuttery gameplay with it (which was gone in the last big update 2 months ago). They are aware of it and try to push a patch (hopefully before Friday ends). Other than that, the game is incredible deep and changed so much over the 4 years and grew to be one of my most favorite games of all time. Whatever SciFi universe you like, you will most likely find a reference to it in Stellaris!
I've played this game so much that I genuinely don't think my opinion on it would be representative for someone new. If you love sci-fi and/or strategy all I'll say is give it a go.
Downloading now (with your link). I haven't played anything like this before. Looking forward to it. It does look brain-hurtingly complicated though. Wish me luck...
I've played this one to death. It's a fantastic game for anyone interested in sci-fi and 4x. My only complaint is the end-game performance. It really sapped my will to continue playing to the end. Does anyone know if that has been fixed? Recently picked up a 3600x and have been thinking about coming back to Stellaris.
Fantastic game. Stellaris has just gotten better and better as time has passed, and each expansion is an improvement. If I have any issues, it is the desyncs on multiplayer. They can be extremely annoying, and while they've been working on those, there are still rough ones, so I hope that they continue to work on it.

If you wanna try it out a bit simplified , it's on gamepass (console)and the dlcs are cheaper there i believe , it looks overwhelming when you start but if you watch a small guide or just play along it's pretty easy to get into.
Great job. Sponsors are hard for an honest review channel. I'm glad to see a great game shout out.
Let's go Mack! Get the bag. I'm downloading Stellaris to give it a try.
Looks so overwhelming!
It is, but it's very satisfying when you get the hang of it!
I have spend 651 hours of my life in the game, I am still having a blast!
Micah van Everdingen I actually have the base game from an old humble bundle. Might give it a shot!
@@OmniAsh1 Don't forget, if you need any help with the game there are loads of RUclips video's about this game and the mechanics!
The references are strong in this one
I have 651 hours in the game and I still have a blast everytime I boot it up
And theres a star trek total conversion for the ultra nerds out there :3
I bought the game on release and rocking all the expansions. Terrific game with so much depth!
Mack promoting a game on Steam....this is a first. Mark this day on your calendars.
Ok if any one has a problem starting the game, go into the launch settings and change it to borderless fullscreen the game starts up then.
To be honest, the only thing that stops me from buying Stellaris right now is the lack of any season pass/GOTI edition or possibility to buying a game with all the add-ons at once. Paradox's DLC policy does not allow me to start enjoying their beautiful games.
This is a towering game. Just purchased last week and completely absorbed.
When “Worth A Buy” said “you already know I think this is a good game” I just stopped watching and bought it because he KNOWS** a good game
Anomolies-stories-quests-B A N K!
Stellaris is basicaly a child of Master of Orion and Victoria. Both parents are proud of it :)
Definitely worth a stream.
Mac! Did you see the news about Mafia? I hope you do a Worth a buy on the re release of it.
Hell, it's about time.
Then moment you said sponsored the first thing that came up was "RAID SHADOW LEGENDS!!!"
I love Stellaris, I really need to sit down and relearn it since it's been a while lol
"Very realistic guys" ding
Mack, I will post it again. When Kenshi?
Only thing is that its like the Sims, there are enough DLCs to have to sell your car for to buy them all.
This is different though, Paradox does support the games with the money they earn with the DLC sales.
Unlike EA, Paradox doesn't run away with a pile of cash after 2 years to make a sequel to cash in again. CK2 was supported for 8-9 years, it's getting it's sequel this year.
It the last 8 years I have lost count on how many Call of duties and Battlefields have been made
@@teaser6089 totally agree but total game price with all DLC still way to high
Train simulator says hello...
Any must have DLC's for this one? Every Paradox game that I've bought had them, is that the case here too?
Nothing is "Required" they all add depth to certain parts of the game, however, Aspec makes good DLC guides every time a new one comes out. Take a look at his video's, he can be very helpful!
The DLC isn't as bad as EU4s DLC
Time flies when i play this shit. Its actually time travel.
You ever play Star Wars Empire At War? Lots of similar elements.
Excellent Game! What about Endless Space 2 review?
See this is a company that knows what you like and is like let's sponsor him and get a real opinion! I love this game and all the mods for it too
I've been on the fence about playing (own the game, but seemed very overwhelimg), and after this I'm all in. Thanks Mack for turning my gaze back to this!
Ted Fieri
The Stellaris subReddit is a helpful place, if you have problems.
Need to give this another chance, guess I’ll do that now.
Mack have you seen the the news of the Mafia : The City of Lost Heaven remake?
I'm really worried it's going to not have the same soundtrack, voice acting, and probably include some stupid ass cover mechanic. God, I hope i'm wrong. Mafia 1 means the world to me.
@@Robert048 We'll have to wait and see I guess. May 19th is when they reveal more.
Hey Mac, Satan here, big fan - you plan on doing a video talking about your thoughts on the Mafia 1 remake? They've built it from the ground up RE2/3 style :) I know it's one of your fave games so I'm interested in your thoughts...
Seems like it's just a giant, fancy spreadsheet. But I trust Mach, so I shall try.
I've played this game so much that I genuinely don't think my opinion on it would be representative for someone new. If you love sci-fi and/or strategy all I'll say is give it a go.
Mack would you try StarSector?
its really good indie game that wipes the floor with most AAA games thees days
Or Aurora 4x
@@teaser6089 I think thats too much
yes. play it. become the senate.
Finally a video of a game that appeals to me
Downloading now (with your link).
It has improved, but I own a Ryzen 3600, it still slows down, one way to fix this is building the Planet destroyer and kill many planets in wars haha.
Fantastic game. Stellaris has just gotten better and better as time has passed, and each expansion is an improvement. If I have any issues, it is the desyncs on multiplayer. They can be extremely annoying, and while they've been working on those, there are still rough ones, so I hope that they continue to work on it.
This game is even better with an ultrawide monitor.
