You forgot to say ‘First!’
@@J.W.W. No, TFL is run by grownups, not by teens that live in their parents basement.
I’d still take an old school 4Runner.
that took so long I thought you were doing the mile, LOL
The 4Runner is truly timeless, and Roman's blame on the weather for low power had me cracking up! Can't wait to see more drag races and comparisons with other trucks.
umm it IS THE WEATHER
Drag racing in freezing rain… ?
Roman said he blamed the "low" power on the Tacoma to the weather. ACTUALLY on a turbo charged engine cold weather will give you more power due to the air being more dense.
You have this all wrong. I’ll let you do the research.
Not too mention they're at elevation where the naturally aspirated engine already has a disadvantage. I remember watching the EcoBoost smoke the Coyote on this channel. However, other channels had much closer results, even favoring the Coyote, when raced at sea level.
@@lpolakoffhe’s right bro. You’re the one that needs to do research.
But also it's very humid
@@lpolakoff He’s not wrong. Cool weather literally improves intercooler efficiency.
That’s why cold weather is often colloquially referred to as “boost weather” in the car community.
Roman was so funny in his video " You sound like a horny Buffalo" completely caught me off guard lol and " Case! Case, you get the hell out of here too." Made me lol 😂😂
Great video TFL awesome to see that 4runner and new Tacoma!
You cant beat a tried and true 4runner many have tried but my money goes with old-school 4runner
That’s why I bought a 4Runner. Just enough tech to be relevant, but enough old school tech to be dead nuts reliable.
…and the gas pump. That thing is shit fuel milage.
Couldn’t agree more. Nice smooth ride. Lots of confidence in inclement weather too.
Rented one in Colorado when I went there for snowboarding. Yes it's slow and heavy but man, it just gives you peace of mind knowing you'll make it through the mountains with no problem. A snowstorm hit that weekend we were up in the mountains too.
Umm anything newer from Toyota is better, so YES you can
4Runner! Bulletproof. Timeless design!
the last year to buy one. all it really needs is a new v6 and tranny. i wouldnt mind those black fender flares from the tacoma.
It’s bullet proof but it’s ugly as sin
The Tacoma is far better, but ALL Japanese cars are bullet proof
ITS grabage
@@theeconomist100 you cant afford one 😂
Id still take the 4runner. Japanese quality vs American/Mexican junk
Gotta love Tommy's sound effects!!!
Like the new Taco, just wish I wouldn’t have to work a second job to comfortably afford one.
How much more does the 4Runner weigh than the Tacoma?
Kase deserves the credit for sure lol great video!
This was incredible. Shoutout kase for braving this wild adventure with them
Great video..
Great channel 💪
Easily one of the drag races of all time.
That Ineos does sounded surprisingly good
Yeah the 4runner has an engine that's been around since the ark.. they're slow heavy on gas but super reliable..
I have a 5th gen 4Runner and do love it, however I am looking forward to a Hybrid Land Cruiser or 6th gen 4Runner Hybrid. More power and far better fuel economy will be nice. We have a 2023 Rav4 Hybrid and it is fairly quick and gets great fuel economy.
The difference in cost will buy a lot of gas.
20 years later the 4Runner will be running like champ.
lets hope the Toyota turbo system is more reliable than Ford's ecoboost offerings! It stinks the new 4Runner won't have a standard V6.
@@Jasonoid Toyota HiLux has been using turbos longer than 4 runners have been a thing :)
@@cmdrls212 diesel, correct? That's not the same as gasoline.
Yep my 3rd gen will be 24 years old in April and shes still running awesome
It was fun to watch this, I was curious. We have a 2018 4Runner and yeah, it’s no speed demon.
Our 4th gen 2008 4Runner is has the same engine, but it's slightly lighter so I'm curious how much faster it would be LOL...
@@Jasonoid I have a 2020 4runner, but I'd still love a 4th gen V8 4runner. I'm keeping my eye out for one
@@swimmer8585 that 4.7L V8 is one of the most reliable models ever built by Toyota!
@@Jasonoid Good to see you here, I very much enjoy your RUclips channel. We had a 2006 Tundra with the 4.7L , no troubles with it at all, but it does require a timing belt, water pump etc. changeout at 90,000 miles. We put Bilstein shocks and off-road Cooper tires on our 4Runner and it really transformed it.
From your neighbor in the South ( Nevada)
I grew up hearing that turbos stress engines, they get tired quicker. Hard to change my opinion from a larger natural aspirated motor.
They say life is a marathon and not a race. 300k 4Runner vs a……..time will tell. I bought my 22 4Runner to specifically get a non direct injection engine. The day I picked it up all 8 4Runners were pre ordered. So we all picked them up the same weekend. An older gentleman traded in a 91 4Runner with over 900k on it. Amazing.
You are on target, I just snagged a 2021 4runner with 8k miles on it. Best $41500 I’ve spent on a rig since I bought my 2020 trd pro Tacoma new in sept of 2020. Two titles in the safe and I’m done buying at 55 years old.
I'm also interested to see how long the Tacoma turbo lasts ditto with the Tundras. I know the Tundras have had a few kinks here and there so I hope they might be able to do better than Ford. Since some Ecoboosts have been able to exceed 200k miles no problems while others not so much. And no one else has a modern turbo engine that has been around long enough to hit those numbers besides Chevy but their turbo engines barely reach 100k
Maintenance is king. You'll make any toyota, old or new, last 300k miles if you maintain it. If you beat it and neglect it, the 4runner will be crap by the time it reaches 80k. Just common sense.
the 4runner V6 is legendary for using the most fuel for the least power. It is an engineering achievement unlikely to be be matched in history.
And yet they are heralded for their bullet proof reliability... And keeping their value. And what are we talking? 19mpg vs 21mpg ?
@@rrmin36 19mpg out of a 4runner? only if you have something towing IT lmao or traveling down wind hurricane force winds lol. There is a reason why that truck is infamous for "you're towing, even if you're not towing" lol
About the same power and mileage as the pentastar V6. What do you expect from a reliable big V6 that has to move an SUV?
"oh. he left at one." haha
That's actually pretty pathetic if you think about its a half a second faster with an 8 speed, you can only imagine if the 4Runner had the 8 speed would blow it a mile away lol but last time I checked nobody's racing their 4Runner down the road.
I'm curios if vehicle weight had any influence on the results.
Lol y'all are racing a 4runner? I've got a 4runner. I love it. Its super reliable and will outlast every other vehicle on the market. It will take you to the ends of the earth through mud, sand, dirt, and hell itself. But a race? The 4runner's 0-60 time is simply "eventually."
I’m so surprised that after more than a decade of existing, people (as Tommy just did) claimed that the ‘S’ is Sport mode. It’s not, it’s ‘Sequential’ (limiting the highest gear).
Assuming and other cars use s for sport mode, my guess. Kinda like how the turbo button on old computers slows them down.
That was like watching a race in The Fast and the Furious 😂
4Runner has some tall gears!
Tacoma Vs Frontier ❤
Nissan frontier vs tacoma vs Colorado. Does a 4 banger turbo really compete with a well put together NA V6?
Frontier barely beat the old v6 tacoma lol. Tested by edmunds, motortrend, or some other automotive journalist. Forgot which one there were so many
I can tell you as far as performers, the Nissan will fall on its face. The V6 in thr nissan has DI only which means long term more maintenance and reliability issues in comparison with Toyota's dual injection. Only Ford has adopted dual injection in the V6.
The 4.0 nissan in the older frontier killed the 3.5 Toyota at the drags. To be honest I think it faster then the newest 3.8 frontier. I'd like to see that race
@@randalsweeting661 the 4.0 and the 3.4 in the 1st two generations pf the Tacoma murdered the 3.5 as demonstrated by TFL. The 3.5 was a sorry excuse for emissions control.
@beexiong2995 my son has a 22 frontier so 4x4 and I have a 23 canyon AT4X. Here at sea level not only is he faster from a stand still but also top speed. Haven't don't a 30-70 yet is what matters to me. If I can't pass slow traffic then a vehicle is useless
A b58 in the new 340 makes 382hp. Why is it so detuned in the Ineos?
I and my family very happy to be in the loosers team with our 5th Gen 4Runners. 😜 But happy to watch videos of new Toyotas and Lexus have new Tech for speed and offroadability.
I had a 2023 rental 4Runner for a week in Boulder - it didn't have my favorite handling and was quite anemic. I'll take my 2018 Disco5 diesel any day.
And wait till the tuners get a fair crack at the drivetrain. The turbo 4 will make a bit more and the transmission will get some help as well.
Need a 2gen Tacoma vs 4gen Tacoma.
ive a 2017 TRD Pro heavily modded lift, 34s etc. The engine power is OK. The 5 speed transmission a dog. Best mod I did by far was a throttle response Pedal Commander. Drives like a totally different car. Now as a daily I have an RS6 Avant with APR, downpipes intake, as well as a weekend 2 seater. The 4 runner isn't a drag car, but that transmission, man it sucks(tho will last forever). Pedal Commander made it feel like I tossed on a S/C.
Also, surprised the truck was ONLY marginally faster than the 4Runner
lol I can imagine the 4Runner with 34s 0-60 is merely just a suggestion lol
Pedal commander helps a lot. But that's just throttle response. If you really want to wake that thing up throw the TRD cold air intake on it, cat back exhaust and a PLP race chip. Chip plugs in the OBD II port so it doesn't flash the ECU. It's also got a really cool display with a lot of values not in the vehicle gauges i.e. intake temp, coolant temp etc. I'm considering doing the 76mm throttle body next. Working my way up to the supercharger. Probably after front bumper, sliders, dual battery and 35s.😂
$56k for a Tacoma? No way in heck.
4Runner all day
I was expecting the V6 to come out on top
I hope the window switches on the new Tacoma are IP67 resistant because all other manufactures that chose that location in the past had serious short issues from water damage.
The 4Runner is the same
First race gap was about 70feet… which is the distance traveled in .59secs at 80mph
There will be a TRD performance package available from factory that will be available for the new Tacoma. This should bump the HP to over 300
Here are the gains with the new Tundra. I am hoping this gives us an indication for the Tacoma "“In factory trim, the base i-FORCE engine produces 389 peak horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 479 lb-ft. of torque at 2,400 rpm,” said Greg Bernas, vice president, Toyota Service Parts and Accessories Development. “The TRD Performance Package increases power output to 421 horsepower at 5,200 rpm, while peak torque comes on 400 rpm sooner, delivering 479 lb-ft. of torque at 2,000 rpm, broadening the torque band and significantly improving power delivery at throttle tip in,” Bernas said."
The hybrid already makes 326 over 400 trq
@@beexiong2995 Yep, we know
I want to see a RANGE test... which ones goes further on a single tank of gas... my bet is the 4Runner due to super small Tacoma fuel tank
I still believe in the old adage that applies to both the xterra/frontier, and the old Tacoma/forerunner, they have a v6 that eats gas like a v8, and makes the power of a 4 banger. I have a fronty and yeah she is not quick
Also mine is pretty bad, I’ve got the 6 speed manual, im Titan swapped with 34’s, exhaust and intake, I gotta put my foot into it to get goin anywhere, which makes cool sounds, but doesn’t get me anywhere that fast, gonna either regear, or bite the bullet on a v8
No thanks on that 2.4. sounds awful. I'll take that proven 1gr. Even better yet, just give me a 2nd Gen Tacoma but new. Here in the northest that turbo performance level isn't that big of a disparity. In fast, there isn't much difference at all
24 Nissan Frontier Pro4x vs your Tacoma!!
Tacoma which trim ?
Now quarter mile against Ridgeline and Nissan like your video a few years ago.
Im seeing lots of videos that show the new Tacomas having problems with the front differential.
Looks cold and miserable out there but still a fun video. Thanks guys
As if youtube ads arent bad enough, now we have to deal with extra in video sponsorships. Does anybody else remember when people used to make videos as a side gig? Now everybody wants to make a living off of it.
I'd be curious to see the race at lower elevation.
I would still take the 4runner
You can tell how much of a failure the previous 3.5 V6 Tacomas were because TFL have preferred to compare the “new” (2007) Tacoma 4.0 litre V6 powertrain in the 4Runner instead of the prior 3.5 V6 powertrain from 2016,,, 😂😂.
I know,, they have compared the 3.5 to the 4 cylinder Turbo as well, just being facetious,, haha.
I think the mash up of this video is GREAT mind you! Mash ups tend to show how close &/or different the vehicles really are.
Great video Roman & Tommy,,, oh,, and KASE! 😊
Had a ‘21 4runner. I loved it. But it was the slowest vehicle I’ve ever owned.
You get rid of it?
I dig the Grenadier. Don't dig the price or the choice of engine. They should have used a turbo-diesel.
wow.... is that a center stack on the taco ? or a cell someone left on the dash... LOL...
At sea level it would have been closer. Mainly because the 4runners engine has no turbo.
4 runner probably weighs a bit more than the taco
Lol Older and wiser 😂
Which turtle you betting on!
I don’t understand why they didn’t race the new generation Tacoma vs the previous gen Tacoma? That’s the real comparison we want to see
This could have been a RUclips Short. 😅
I thought from seeing them that the hood scoop on 4 runner was for a turbo intercooler but now i know it is useless/decoration
Wanna see Tacoma vs Colorado.
At sea level I am sure it would be about the same for both. But the 4Runner sounds much better.
please run the new Tacoma vs the new Colorado
Actually, it's hard to imagine the B58 not being fast, curious how it feels with a lot of weight to lug around.
Just drive an X5 or 7 Series with a B58. Still has giddy up but you can certainly feel the extra weight
We need to see the new Tacoma versus the GEN 4 4runner, V-8 with sport pkg
yes, but make it the iForceMax taco. Let's see how that old V8 does against an 8sp transmission, a turbo charged intercolled IC engine w/ an in-line full torque output electric motor pushing out a combined 326 horses and 465 pound-feet >:)
4Runner doesn’t have a sport mode. That S stands for sequential and it’s a gear limiter. Does nothing to change anything to shift pattern or throttle response etc.
While technically true, selecting S puts you in S4 by default which limits gears to 1-4, so it's possible it might help at the top end if it would otherwise want to upshift to 5th, but you hold it in 4th up to the redline instead.
Tommy is up there with my favorite car reviewers. He doesn’t just hit bullet points that end contradicting himself in the end. For example a lot of them will drive the 4 runner and just complain about the old school tech and then get in a newer vehicle and complain about all the new school tech. They just end up sounding like mouth pieces and you can’t trust their opinion. I always worked in production and one thing I take into consideration is where it’s made, how long has that factory been there. Opening up a huge facility that’s highly automated, with a new work force is going to cause a lot of problems in the first few years. That equals a no go for me. Also, no made in Mexico or Canada vehicles either.
Tommy and his dad are both full of dung. They are Ford product butt kissers, everything else they intentionally drive like idiots in to make the brand look bad.
really gotta hand it to the Grenadier and as much as i hate BMW and love toyota, BMW does know what they're doing when it comes to mechanical engineering where they fail is electronics.
For such a heavy offroad focused truck the Grenadier did pretty good. I am looking forward to seeing the pickup truck version of the Grenadier. I don't like all the technology in modern trucks and the Grenadier is the first new truck that I really like.
same here i find that most trucks are leaning to heavily on electronics and less on mechanical capability , i feel like whenever i watch a review where they take a newer truck or EV offroad they almost always have some sort of failure. i work on cars for a living and i get sick of dealing with poor engineering failures and software issues.@@aerynlovell4754
We need to see the Tacoma against the Colorado Trail Boss in a drag race and off road course.
I daily drive an 08 4Runner which has the same engine and transmission and can’t see myself paying 50k+ for a new one unless it gets an updated engine and transmission
next year new gen gets the same turbo 4 that's in the tacoma... rumor has it that is :( :(
My 3rd gen Tacoma 🛻 💨 weighed 4,800lbs with me in it & almost full tank of ⛽! Sorry I'm just not into turbocharged vehicles. 🆕 🌮 is 200lbs heavier takes away a lot of performance advantage it had. After tuning 18+hp & 24tq it feels like a different truck! I wish TFL would have found a OTT tuned Tacoma to race against the new Tacoma
The fact that the Slow Runner ran with the Taco at all doesn’t say much for the new Taco.
it is because of TRACTION RWD
Wish they'd have built a manual 5th gen.
4runner did well. Drivetrain is 20 years old, and the 5th gen really needs a tune to perform better.
Paying 80k no heated seats or electronic seats but I do get it
Do the new Tundra vs new Tacoma
I have no problem buying a 2019 maybe 2020, 4runner but anything newer than that is just kinda stupid. That thing is so outdated from the interior to the powertrain. it's not only inefficient but it lacks power too !
That sure is one trendy looking square. Grenadier is a good analogy for a billionaire throwing money into it.
try a super charger on that 4.0
Man that was painful to watch. A Prius would make quick work of both of these.
I would feel better about saying goodbye to the old Toyota engines if the new ones blew it away. Barely beat it with the turbo charged one and some of that is due to the transmission. Keeping the V6 with the 8 speed would have caused a craze within Toyota fans and drove up sales big time.
Yeah the new Land Cruser goin' to eat the Ineos for lunch.
I want to see the current Ford ranger versus the Tacoma
While I like the Tacoma a lot more, the 2.3 Ecoboost in the Ranger is WAY faster. The Tacoma will probably last forever, but that little Ford motor is one of the best 4 cylinders on the market right now when balancing power and reliability - I have a Bronco with the 2.3 paired with the manual gearbox and it is awesome!
4runner trd pro all DAY
first off, Forerunner is heavier compared to the pickup. Not a good comparison
I don’t buy a Toyota for: “Reliability, we will see.” 😉
Come back in 10 years and see what engine has less problems.
Applaud all you want RELIABILITY is still the Number 1 factor for working class folks out there with not much money to throw around. The Green energy thing we all know is a total BS
Last gen Taco and Colorado (V6’s) vs their current gen siblings (turbo 4’s). I know the manufacturers don’t want you to do this but imagine the clicks and revenue 🤔😎
A Colorado V6 with or without a RIPP Supercharger? If you want to really see if the turbocharged 4-cylinder is better then put it up against a supercharged V6 Colorado and get some MPG numbers.
Tacoma vs Andres Colorado TB :)
Race it against a supercharged 4 runner
OMG that 4 banger sounds like a go cart. Please don’t do that to the new 4Runner.
