It's time to SCARIFY and VERTICUT your lawn - Autumn Lawn Tips

- In today's video, I scarify this lawn for the first time. It's a good time to get a job like this done because it's not too hot (temperatures are favourable) which means you won't stress your lawn out too much and we have plenty of rain to help it recover too!

The beauty of bent/fescue is you can scarify and then leave it to fill in itself. No more reseeding & compost/top dressing.
Bang on 👍🏻
I renovated the front lawn yesterday (rye grass). Took a while with a load of equipment. Then verticut the bottom lawn in the garden which took about 5 minutes 😅
Good video, I like the editing. Maybe a couple more close ups (one on the blades of the machine and one as a before on the lawn).
Will do on the next one - good shout!
looks good. i love doing a light verticut once a month, just helps it stay clean and maintains a constant grass length. also lessens any bare patches where you have had to go aggressive to reset it.
That's scarifier is amazing mate
It’s a decent bit of kit 👍🏻
Thought it would struggle more when I used it on a renovation on Saturday, but it was sound
@@NoviceGardener yh decent mate, I might do a mini renovation soon as well
I've got the screwfix Scarifier, it's just under £100 at the moment, and I've purchased the moto tec Verticutter attachment for it, that was £150, I'm very pleased with the results and would recommend it.
I’ve seen a few of these attachments, look decent 👍🏻
I have watched your complete renovation series and feel completely inspired to go through the whole process that you went through. I do need to collect up the tools, materials, I need first before starting. When is the best time of year to start the process?
That's boss! If I was you, I'd hang on until next spring if you can. You can turf any time of year, but you'll find things much easier in spring. If you're going with seed, spring, again, is your best bet!
Spring time will be perfect as that will give me time to collect up the elements that I need to execute the renovation. Thank you for your help! Keep the videos coming!!
Did this on mine over a week ago. straight after I had 6 days of rain lol. Some disease yet again. not so much in the bent dominant areas are bent isn't anywhere as dense as fine fescue.
The rain has been relentless here over the past few days and this week doesn’t look any better 😅
You have to be cruel to be kind regular verticutting is the key to having a nice bent/fescue lawn.
Save your money mate, I splashed out on the Allett verticutter cartridge and to be honest it looks like your machine did a much better job🙃
I always bit the bullet and went for it. I’m not entirely sold on their scarifier, but I’d need to give it a go myself before passing judgement. This did a cracking job on the bottom tier yesterday
I bought the screwfix Scarifier last year for around £70, There's a company called moto-tec that makes Verticutter blades for them and other scarifiers, mine arrived last week and I'm very happy with it, it was £150 though
Verticut results are very different to a light scarify in my experience. You can verticut every week without destroying the lawn. You don't pull anything like as much out as you just did. It cuts rather than pulling. Not having a go but there's a lot of confusion about the difference on RUclips.
Normally verticutter works above thatcher layers, it mainly uses for warm season grass like bermuda to cut stolon and making lawn surface more firmer especially for golf course. Typical verticutter got at least 20 ninja star blades, they are pretty close to each other.
@@rickhunter6667absolutely - which was what I was getting at - different process. also great for cutting through POA to thin it out. Not sure where you are Rick but judging by the OP's wheelie bins I'm only about 10 miles away from him so deal with similar conditions/problems. There's a company in the UK makes aftermarket verticutter cassettes for a few scsrifiers. I've been using one this year. Really nice job of grooming the lawn so you can get an even cut too
This lawn could have done with a verticut a while back. It’s had loads of lateral growth and with it being turf, it’s much more mature than the space I seeded so it’s ended up with much more thatch. It was quite spongy, hence a lot of surface thatch coming out through the initial pass. Lateral growth can often hide the reality of a lawn if it’s not dealt with.
Used this machine to verticut the bottom lawn yesterday. Completely different experience with the small amount of thatch it has. Not nearly as aggressive on the lawn. 99% of what came off was just green lateral growth. Will have the video out next weekend (not had time to edit it yet).
But the difference between verticutters and scarifiers is not really that big. Depth is the biggest factor. Don’t get me wrong, blade type does matter, hence why I’ve gone with this one because of the blades it has.
I agree, i had the Allett verticut cartridge and its no way near as aggressive as the dethatcher, it groomed it more than anything.
Totally agree with everything you said mate on verticutting and scarifying
Do some research about adding gysum to clay soil,it will break it down over time.❤
I’ve seen a few bits on it, but not tried it myself. Will have to have a proper look
What setting is did you use on the fertiliser spreader? I have the same seed spreader but dont want to burn the lawn using a higher setting
I had the hole size at 5 and the speed at 2 👍🏻
What's your verdict on the Einhell scarifier ? Looks like it did a decent job. Pleased with it ? Maybe a review ? I watched the unboxing, but could you just sum it up in another video please, battery life etc. Thank you.
In short, I think it’s boss! The wife’s sick of me telling her about it 🤣
I’ll do a review this week if I can as hopefully can help a few. Verticut a couple of lawns and done the same with full renovations too. Really impressed with it so far. Verticut the bottom tier lawn superbly yesterday. Not a bad little scarified easier when it came to the renovations. It’s light, easy to whip about. And the battery life is decent. Both batteries are 4ah, so more than enough for my spaces 👍🏻
What strimmer do you use ?
It’s the 18v cordless Bosch - decent little strimmer
Ive been planning sincer last year to scarify my lawn in September and its DOESNT STOP RAINING or the lawn is damp 🤬 should of done it August
It's been awful this week in particular! You're lucky to get a decent break in the rain!
@@NoviceGardener I'm taking a risk today it didn't rain yesterday however its was cold between 8 and 14 degrees and today its going to be between 14 and 19 degrees, grass is kinda dry however soil is moist which isnt good condition for scarify but its going to rain later around 5pm onward so got a tiny window ,I've scalped the lawn about 30 mins ago so might leave it till around 3-4pm then scarify 😅
Good shout! We have to take any decent window we get at the moment 🤣
Saying that, next week looks decent - might be the last of the decent weather though!
@@NoviceGardener 💯 bro 🤣 , I just finished scarifying now and it actually turned out ok,sun came out and only scarifier on highest level like you did ,inuse go alot further down however with soil being moist ot will probably rip most of the flower out and would need even more time for recovery so just done highest level ans sprinkle some grass seed and now watering it in ,weather forecast has changed to rain to start tommorow early morning instead of 5pm today 🙃 ,yeah I can see next week being quiet good and like you said probably tge last best week of the year ,hopefully grass seed germinate quicker before it's gets cold and lawn recovers in time for autumn. 🔥😎
I have a Makita UV001GZ. No verticut attachment for that unfortunately but theres plently of height adjustment settings
Should still do a fair job if the blades are not too thick
