Every few months or so, I come back to this channel and re-binge the whole MK series. There is something undescribebly cozy about the whole atmosphere.

Takes me back to about 1996 or 1997 for me, my dad had a Sega Genesis during that time and I was around 5 or 6 years old, I started out on Mortal Kombat 3 but later on we got number 2 as well, was so much fun back then, I just think life in general back then was so much better, now the times have really changed, not so cozy anymore for sure.

I remember drawing the ninjas over and over again because they were so cool to me. I would cut the drawings out and make my own figures so they could fight lol. This was before you could just go online and buy whatever you wanted or read up on stuff. Good times when games still had mystery

As much as I love this game, the AI is beyond cheap. They always seem to know exactly what you're going to do and always seem to know the perfect way to counter all of your moves.

The AI clearly has extended invincibility frames and less recovery frames. Also some player's moves have reduced range. Like the roundhouse went straight through the AI's head yet nothing happened. It's all bullshit.

Most definitely, this is the most difficult game in the franchise. MK2 forces you to master dogging, blocking, and counterattacks bc the CPU will abuse that throw move unless you roundhouse kick them. They will dodge nearly every attack you give them unless you manage to catch them off guard, which is what they are very likely to do to you. Now almost all the other mortal kombat games have these challenging features, but they are not as merciless as MK2. I have been studying how the CPU works in this game. I speculate that bc this was the most favored MK game at the time, midway designed it to vacuum up all your quarters into the arcade machine (like you mentioned in the beginning of the video). This game requires you to not only know what you are doing as far as basic and special moves. But it also requires you to critically strategize how you fight your opponent bc the CPU is so damn brutal. This is where MK2 and the OG MK differ. When the game forces you to develop serious strategies, it strains the player from being able to just drop kick or uppercut your opponent with at least some ease. MK2 doesn’t even have nearly enough freedom on how you fight your opponent as supposed to it’s predecessor, causing MK2 to reduce the fun factor especially for the casual players.
You can't really "master" dodging, blocking, or countering in this game. The AI cheats to get around your skills. The AI's frames are much faster than yours by default. You can't beat the game with skill. Every single playthrough I've ever seen of this game even the hardcore arcade game pros, the player uses some method of exploitation against the AI. It's the only way to win. Also, I don't think it makes much sense to say that the game was designed this way to suck up coins due to its favorability. The game was released this way, and there were only two games.
MGStar’s playthroughs are timeless, for the most part.
I come back to GStar's videos from time to time, mainly the Mortal Kombat videos because they are among my favorites.

7 years late, but:
forward jump kick, 2 steps backwards = AI just freezes and you can repeat it. Cheap way discovered in childhood.
And cheapest trick of them all for MK2 - Baraka jump straight up+punch. His collision model actually changes so that AI will just get punched whenever they try to do anything.
Raiden can truly turn your day upside down in an instant...He can go back, back forward himself.

When the war against AI finally commences, I want gstar to lead the charge.
Here is what I discovered:
Opponent on the bottom of the Kombat Plan + Stage Fatality stage = Medium.
Opponent on the bottom of the Kombat Plan + normal stage = Easy.
Opponent after the third or fourth character + Stage Fatality stage = Near impossible.
Opponent after the third or fourth character + normal stage = Very Hard.
Shang Tsung on stage fatality stage = Near Impossible.
Shang Tsung on normal stage = Near Impossible.
Kintaro = Very Hard.
Shao Kahn = Very Hard.
Ratings on difficulty:
Easy = 1
Medium = 2
Hard = 3
Very Hard = 4
Near Impossible = 5
Difficulty of Mortal Kombat 2 Arcade:
30/40 stars.
Always the few first battles are easy.. later it's hard... but after losing 2x times with different character the AI suddenly gets easier to finish. Look at new Mortal Kombat titles... first 2 up to 3.. the AI difficulty is at low number. the further you go the higher number it will be. Same thing with old Mortal Kombat games... easy at beginning and harder later but easier again after being beat a few times. I'm sure they did on purpose to get more coins from people in arcade

Kintaro is suscpeitble to timed jumpkicks, you can literally jump kick him to death if you do it at a steady rate, not too slow, not too fast. Kahn is suspectible to straight kicks, he'll often walk right into them. He also tends to walk into Baraka's blades and Kitana's fanlift.
I feel like if you knew how loved you truly are you would post an update video. Maybe you really just don't know how much people eagerly await your return. Your channel is literally the only one I have notifications on for.

I personally prefer the look they had rather than the 3D models for t he more recent games (though MK4 had a similar visual appeal)
A lot of people do. That's why fans were pissed when they cancelled the remasters of the first three games that were to have new motion capture actors and updated sprite work.

He's probably talking about appearance as being obscure. Like how most people including me like the idea of Ninjas or any Mysterious and loner characters.
Once you know how to exploit the AI this game is really fucking easy. I've managed to do a one credit run in very hard difficulty, even if it's cheap, it's just so satisfying after all the shit this game gave me through the years.
So, for everyone who can't beat this game or has a hell of a time doing so, here's the key for the Arcade version. Just jump back from sweeping distance and the enemy will jump forward, leaving him or herself open to any attack. This really starts working from the 3rd opponent onwards, so besides Shao Kahn, the second enemy is the hardest.
There are other tips though. Always try to duck and let the opponent come at you, then jump back, that way they can't use their projectiles. If you get cornered, duck and block, the enemy will throw you and get you off there, getting cornered is the worst you can do. Now for some character specific tips:
-Against Sub-Zero, Reptile and Raiden, always block when you duck, Sub-Zero and Reptile's slide and Sub-Zero's freeze can hit you while you're ducking, I always duck against Raiden too, but I don't totally remember if his torpedo can hit you if you don't block. Mileena's roll attack can hit you too, but you shouldn't be ducking against her anyway.
-Against Reptile always start the round with a flying kick, he likes opening at least one round with going invisible, you have to avoid that at all costs. Kung Lao, likes to open rounds with the teleport, duck as the round starts and when he teleports punish him with an uppercut. Jax is similar with his ground pound, so open with a flying kick against him, sometimes he opens with that wave attack he has, if you were fast to input, you can jump over it. Liu Kang may start with the bicycle kick, so always duck, if you time it right you can uppercut him.
-You almost always want to be ducking, but against Cage is mandatory, he'll miss with his shadow kick and leave himself open for like ten million years for you to punish him with an uppercut.
-Against Mileena and Liu Kang, abuse the fact they always "jump and shoot" when you do. Get close to them (but not so much they can throw you) and do a jumpkick, with a very early kick, that way, as they jump to counter your jump you'll manage to hit them before they can shoot, you can dispatch them very quickly. Mileena is more prone to fall for this than Liu Kang.
-Jade is victim of the jump back abuse too, go for it and feel like a pro beating her. I haven't tested on Smoke or Noob, because Dan Forden's fucking face never appears in the Portal for me and I don't have the patience to unlock Noob.
-Against Kintaro you have to jump towards him and do a late kick (almost when you're over his head). He'll swing and a miss with his uppercut and be totally open to take the kick. Sometimes it doesn't work and he'll kick your ass, but most of the time it does work. Always be ready for his stomp attack. If you manage to corner him, it can be a bit hard to get the correct distance to keep doing the jumpkicks, it's better to just back up, he'll most of the times just walk toward you without doing anything.
-Against Shao Kahn, there are some tricks to beat him easily (like low kicking him all day), but none have really worked for me, so I developed (may not be the first one to think of this though) my own technique to beat him. Shao Kahn is a beast, thanks to his shoulder tackle he has the chance to just destroy you without letting you do anything. You have to follow his style, not letting him do anything, from a close distance, jump towards him with a very early kick, most of the times he'll block it, it doesn't matter, that still does damage and more importantly, keeps him from attacking you, whether he blocks it or not, just keep doing that, don't give him a second. Sometimes, I overshoot and end up jumping over him, if that happens to you, you have to the uppercut as soon as you land, Kahn 99.9% of the time will go for the tackle and you have a pretty good chance to counter it with the uppercut if you input at the right time (easier than it sounds).

MY PS3 NAME IS beswick I haven't done this on an actual Arcade, it's been quite a while since I've seen an MK2 arcade and I don't how I would fare on one since I'm used to playing with D-pads and personally hate sticks, especially for fighting games, also you can't be sure what difficulty it's set on, I usually play it through MAME, where I can manually select the difficulty, and I've also had the chance to beat it on this collection for the Xbox360.

Mk2 is almost like a coloring book/comic book. Mk3 tried to look more gritty realistic. I remember being a little disappointed with my original experience of MK3 but I learned to like it since it's MK. MK2 is definitely the best game

I didn’t understand how different the AI was compared to the main game and got destroyed by the 4th match no matter who I picked but goddamn was it fun. You can only make the CPU jump backwards if you choose certain characters. Others will cause them to throw a projectile.
Picking these will cause them to jump after you:
Kung Lao, Cage, any Ninja, Shang Tsung, Jax, Baraka

I remember the day I beat the arcade version of this game. You have to combine the spamming techniques of of a three year old, the monotonous repeated patterns the computer uses and every ounce of concentration you have.

the MK1 AI difficulty in this collection is perfect. Challenging but doable. Wish that had carried over to MK2, the developers were really sadistic with that one.
I agree, MK1 in general has AI that can be BS but it's doable and you feel like you can actually do something. Sadly MK2 wasn't like this at all
