- A longplay of Mortal Kombat II.
Mortal Kombat II (commonly abbreviated as MKII) is a competitive fighting game originally produced by Midway Games for the arcades in 1993. It was later ported to multiple home systems, including the PC, Amiga, Game Boy, Sega Game Gear, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and various PlayStation consoles, mostly in licensed versions developed by Probe Entertainment and Sculptured Software and published by Acclaim Entertainment.
Mortal Kombat II was the second game in the Mortal Kombat series, improving the gameplay and expanding the mythos of the original Mortal Kombat, notably introducing more varied Fatality finishing moves and several iconic characters, such as Kitana, Mileena, Kung Lao, Noob Saibot, and the series' recurring villain, Shao Kahn. The game's plot continues from the first game, featuring the next Mortal Kombat tournament set in the otherdimensional realm of Outworld, with the Outworld and Earthrealm representatives fighting each other on their way to challenge the evil emperor Shao Kahn.
The game was an unprecedented commercial success and was acclaimed by most critics, receiving many annual awards and having been featured in various top lists in the years and decades to come, but also perpetuating a major video game controversy due to the series' continuous depiction of graphic violence. Its legacy includes spawning a spin-off game Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks and having the greatest influence on the 2011 reboot game Mortal Kombat, as well as inspiring numerous video game clones.
It was the happiest day of my childhood when my stepfather brought me Sega Mega Drive with an MK2 cartridge. My eyes were burning and heart beating fast. I spent the whole night looking at this beautiful fusion of realistic figures, musical accompaniment and incredible battle. It was 1997 and I was 13. Black and white cathode ray TV. I will never forget that feeling...
I used to have an eye burning problem back then too 😕 it was because of chlorine. In swimming pools. I was always going swimming as a kid, I loved it so much, and my parents paid for me to have swimming lessons too, so I was a very good swimmer back then. But because of the chlorine in the pools, I'd constantly get this problem 2-3 times a day, every day, where all of a sudden my eyes would start stinging and burning like mad, like hours and hours or even days after the last time I went swimming, my eyes would just become agony out of nowhere, and it was incredibly painful, and I had to close my eyes for 5 minutes and just endure it. Eventually then the pain would go away and I could open my eyes again. But I stopped going to swimming lessons because of it, it was just too painful to have to go through that every day. Wearing goggles didn't really help at all.
So I would only swim when we went on holiday to Spain every year, and for the rest of the year I didn't do any swimming at all. It sucked, cos I love being in water so much. But yeah. And even on holiday I'd only swim in the pool like 4 days out of the two week holiday, cos my family always wanted to go to the beach instead of sitting by the pool (I much preferred the pool really). So I'd swim in the ocean for hours and hours all throughout the day instead. And so cos there's no chlorine in the ocean, that was fine, my eyes didn't burn and sting from sea water.
I wish I could go to the swimming pool in Spain again now, 20+ years later. I never swim anymore. I miss it so much. Haven't been on a holiday for like a decade now either, cos who has money for that?
Dude wtf is this 😂@@duffman18
@@duffman18 WTH does that have to do with what he said?
Down, forward, back, back, C. After 25 years I still know Liu Kangs fatality but I can’t even remember what I had for dinner yesterday😔
Down forward back back X on SNES. Good times
Down, forward, back, back, high Kick - on every system
very important to know where the fatality is performed, wrong place and it won't work
@@351clevelandmodifiedmotor4 Exactly 😊

MKII was the best game I ever had in Genesis (I was 9yo then).
Mortal Kombat is a great game however I think Donkey Kong is the greatest game ever made.

@Alfe the problem solver Lol. It’s a good one.
The music on this game was amazing.
John Sheahan The sounds effects are clearly inferior to the SNES version but overall I prefer the MD/Genesis sound chip for music. There was higher variability in quality between games but it produces a more robust sound that is perfect for action games.
They sprite animated real actors in this. Imagine if they did that now, itd look real as fuk
Yep!
Uh no
U smoking crack? the genesis port was terrible
I love the grittiness of the Sega port. It just adds to the ambience of the game in my opinion. I also love how Shao Kahn doesn't say 'FATALITY" but instead we are treated with a little retro sounding synth wave.
The atmosphere of the Mega Drive-Port is the best. Sadly, just some of the SFX and the "shadows" are bad... The rest is close to the Arcarde. Good game!
When these ports came out, I was always disappointed at how they sounded compared to the arcade version. Playing them now though, those differences make them a lot more enjoyable. Genesis games had such a distinctive sound.
The sound that plays when Fatality is displayed is also in the arcade version. The SNES version doesn’t have it for some reason.
@@JuicyPlayer - The SNES has practically most of what's important from the Arcade. How FUN is the corny Genesis version when you use Shang Tsung ? Oh right.....you can't do "all the arcade tricks, but on SNES you can".
And best version of music in Armory stage.
Aww yes the best version ever and I still own it and still have my system and still play it till this day with my kids 👊👊👊👊
the kid me didn’t give a flying shit about “missing sfx” or whatever, and the adult me still finds the genesis version to be equipped with the right amount of mystique and grittiness in both the sound design and graphic elements and all to the point where it’s almost creepy. That’s the MK I knew first and loved.
To the people who say this is lame, horrible picture, etc that’s the beauty of it. It’s RETRO and it’s great . thank u
This is my opinion: This port is lame, my eyes hurts . thank u
The arcade version is also retro lmao
SNES version is miles ahead of this
This is the best version for me. I grow up with this game so many memories. Love this series! Never know how to do fatalities because can't find them (no internet). Now everything is so easy to find! GOLD DAYS!
R u kidding me? I feel like this is the second worst version of the game
@@NinjaCacodemon_IsSus this port its like 32x. Only the sound its bad.
@@NinjaCacodemon_IsSus yeah the genesis version for the MK series feels so inferior to the snes

Te perdono, no sabes lo que dices.
@@louisfernandezleija69 In the SNES-version Scorpion's spear does not come out of his hand, but from behind his back, that's terrible, in the Genesis-version it comes out of his hand. There are disturbing chains in the foreground in the SNES-version in the acid-level, in the Genesis-version they kept the screen free to see the players better. In the Genesis-version you get the MK-coins for winning, in the SNES-version you get yellow dots. How is the SNES-version better? For what? For the shitty paper-package? Check out Genesis-version, looks like brand new in the shelf. And mostly, the SNES-games cost 20 bucks more than the Genesis-games. Yeah, inferior, totally. So much, you get part 1 for SNES for free on top, that shitty cut-version with sweat for blood and "I kick in your stomach"-fatalities or Kano's "I steal your wallet and hold it in the air"-fatality. Awesome. So inferior.
Bloody hell, I remember the wait for this game on the Megadrive was a killer. I used to go to kilo shop after school and buy armfuls of gaming magazines just for pictures of the upcoming home versions.

Finally somebody with the original Mortal Kombat 2 Sega Genesis from like the 1990s the real original one all the other ones that here on RUclips are like remakes or upgrades but they're not the original ones like this this is the one that I remember when I was a kid when it very first came out. Thanks
This game has the best music of all time.
I remember playing this as a kid. I used to rent it from the local video store.
Unfortunately i never played the SNES version.. which was the superior one.
nope this is the best home version of this game it's practically the same as the arcade version
@@351clevelandmodifiedmotor4 The SNES version is similar to the arcade.
My twin brother and I played with one rule in this game: no repeated floor sweeps. If you did it right, you could KO someone with that one move and they couldn't get out of it.
You could just block lmfaooo
I never forget this game i remember when I was 8... And I saw this game at gaming zone..... And this one is my favourite....
My Favorite mortal Kombat Sega Genesis of all time
Going from Genesis MK1 to Genesis MK2 feels like a fever dream. Much more akin to what you'd see in the arcade machine compared to 1.
My fav version of this game.
Me too, Snes ver. being my second favorite
What
Why
I’m still playing this and MK3 on PS2 (Midway Arcade Treasures) which are perfect arcade ports. But this right here in Genesis brings me good memories.
Yeah I have all the original 3 on the xbox 360 i wish we could get on the Xbox 1?
@@johnwilliams404 well the reboot and vs DC just became backwards compatible, so there's a chance the arcade kollection, Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon could also become backwards compatible
they needed to get these PS2 arcade treasures etc out to the people they should be everywhere I didn't even know PS2 had an arcade treasures, but I have mk1 ,2 and 3 on my phone as part of an arcade classics app, it has all the best arcade games from the 80s and 90s, street fighters, mk, double dragon 1 ,2 and 3 altered beast, ghost n goblins gouls and ghosts, 1942, galaga, galaxian, WWF superstars, alien vs predator, wonderboy, donky Kong, pack man, and so many more
Graphically the Genesis version doesn’t compare favourably with the SNES version but it’s far from a poor port. Still smooth and highly playable which is the main thing. The SNES colour palette was always going to do a better job of the digitised graphics.
Really not.Write in youtube : "Mortal kombat 2 genesis vs snes sprite comparison" and look at.
Genesis has a higher resolution and SNES a better use of colour.
Genesis controlled better to me.
Me personally MK1 on Sega Genesis and MK2 for the SNES.
@@Lieutenant_Dude it does because the snes version had some performance issues and pretty much in built input lag
Awesome playthrough. The genesis version may have had the worst SFX, but the music was top tier.
Liu Kang's projectiles sound like farts
TheMetinPorta Pooper Farts that sounds better than the Snes.
He took double flawless on every opponent? Whaaaaat? When I've played against Mileena for example and after the voice says "FIGHT" and she's doing that fall from above hitting me, doesn't matter if I block it cause its not flawless victory I mean! How did he manage to do that? :O
Jack Knife he must be a virgin 🥴
Sounds way better than MK1 though
Mk2 looked pretty good on the genesis. I played the shit out of it.
I love the fatality music
If the soundtrack has more punch than snes, it's because the compositors are Shaun Hollingworth and, most importantly, Matt Furniss. This guy has made a lot of awesome soundtracks on genesis like Puggsy, Wiz n' Liz, Mickey Mania and Boogerman
Don't forget Alien 3 on genesis! Matt Furnis was a god with the genesis soundchip
Just like Tim Follin was
@@sebastiann.8088 Sorry i forget this one. Damn it.
@@sebastiann.8088 Tim was a god with everything, including the snes chip
weirdly enough, despite the graphical and audio limitations, its better than all the home ports?
no loading times, kick ass genesis style soundtrack, grittier fatalities due to absence of pained screaming, its got a faster feel, bonuses, and the controller you use with it.
I remember figuring out jump kick repetition was a good way to do a f**k ton of damage, too! Man, gooooood times ❤️
The graphics are so goooood!!!
I owned MK2 on both SNES and the Sega Genesis.
The SNES was as close to an Arcade-port as we could hope for at home.
That being said, the gritty synth-chords and the hardware limitations made the Sega-port seem a bit more impressive to me.
Even now, all these years later, and I still have an insatiable hunger for the Sega Genesis version.
It's not perfect; but it's speed and darker tone certainly make up for the obvious limitations of the hardware.
Playing MK2 at home was a privelage that kids today can't fully appreciate.
Nostalgia remains the greatest link to all those fond memories...
That is your own opinion mate Snes mk2 was a glichy mess with slow downs more suit for a 5yo. Sega had arcade perfect game play Ai can get insane at times and best music. Not to mention that Sega games wore a lot chep then any Snes half price or less. Snes sales are based on mass media and end user stupidity
Boy this game is about as old as I am especially the genesis but I do remember playing this alot. Classic
I've noticed that on very easy mode the opponent blocks almost every projectile and on very hard they don't block as much.
Dario Gomez wtf
You are right!! Wtf??
That’s because this game is as poorly made

This was my favorite one besides the new ones of course
I love how after he's been defeated shao kahn just explodes into pieces
The music for Shao Kahn is missing in Arcade, SNES has the music for Shao Kahn arena
My favorite game ever.

Best Mortal Kombat ever.
Man I didn't realize how much I got cheated as a kid. This game on the Sega gen was my first game for it and didn't know how much content they cut out like the victory animations for some characters, the voices from Shao khan and the anouncer. I just accepted 8t for what it was and know any better 😌
Wow, Kung Lao did a Fatality on Liu Kang but only a Friendship on Kitana. Way to betray your best friend, man!
I love your videos, Genesis
7:26 They did a great job with The Pit 2 in MKX showed me that the fighter on fire is not dying after a fatality on him. It's a fighter like Johnny Storm (Fantastic Four) and in MKX these guys are actually fighting. Maybe in some of the upcoming MK series they'll show us how they're fighting on the distant bridge and one of them perform fatality while your match is still going. Whoa that'd be awesome :D
The SNES LOOKED and SOUNDED more like the arcade. But the Mega Drive version PLAYED more like the arcade.
2:42:49 WTF? XDDDDDDDD
Wow eres bastante buena jugando, me trae recuerdos cuando jugaba en el sega a este y al 3
Did you seriously beat the game with every character without taking damage?
ThreeEyedPea yeah on very easy
Hugo França not on Genesis, but yes, it's tool assisted
ThreeEyedPea he didn’t really. It’s called tool assisted. It’s impossible to beat it without dying a few times.
@@dbodooley I can beat MK2 Genesis without dying, on very hard. You just have to be good at the game and know all of the cheap A.I. tricks.

Good thing it still plays well but it's overall a very weak port. The Mortal Kombat 3 port shows MK1 and MK2 could have had much better graphics and sounds.
No
well done i could never get this game through without at least single damage :( way to go ! enjoyed watching thanx a lot !
I don't think I ever knew babalities were in 2! Though I also thought that when I first saw kang's friendship before remembering so maybe I'm spacing out again lol
Hey i'm losing this vídeo, years long ago, i played this vídeo and do things in auto, and in one time this vídeo i missing it, is good to see now
hahaha loved this i remember my dad brought it from the uk
I even remember the cheat code and a few fatalities.heheh love from kenya
Can you do the 32X version of this to?
bhai maza agaya apki speed dekhker.
I have studied this video for a while and there has to be something done to make this easier. Kintaro blocks about 90% of jump kicks in the original version and yet in the Shang Tsung fight for example he just takes a foot to the face every time without blocking. And the odd time he does block throughout the video he never follows up with a throw which is also strange. With Shao Khan the tactic of jumping right to him in the original version would result in getting charged. Entertaining video though but I cant see how it is not tas or something.
You can actually get kintaro to neglect his defense with respect to jump kicks. You either jump as he is attacking or you initiate at he right distance. If you haven’t beaten it already (I see you commented 9 months ago) I suggest trying it with sub zero. Find the right distance, jump kick, follow it up with a slide. You are right, he will throw you in any other situation. Timing and distance are everything in this game.
For Shao Khan you need to be much further away. Jump forward, duck immediately. Doesn’t work every time but if he misses his counter attack you have a free uppercut.
Idk if this is com or not but mk2 was the hardest one, and he didn't get hit once !
Good play Amy
Here's a stratagy. Spam Lui Kangs fire ball the whole game. The end.
I love your the end because lol I do that on my SNES MK2 🤣😂
I always spam low fireball on Shao Kahn, works everytime
Watching these really makes me feel better that I didn't go with Sega.
ilove mortal kombat thanks
Has anyone else ever thought Rayden's otg sprite looked legit creepy in 2? His face is oddly pale and I swear in an uncanny way he looks like an actual corpse from grainy film like straight outta Hong Kong 1997 bootleg "game"
Nice BGM!
PROFESSIONALISM WHO CONTROLLING THIS CHAR
I remember i could never get past Kitana on the arcade ladder
I remember playing this with a three button control until I went to Albertsons and stole the cheap 6 button remote
Wow the SNES looks better and Genesis is lacking some sound effects but it also has some creepy sound effects the SNES does not. When Jax rips out his opponents' arms, you can hear the blood gushing out. That would have traumatized me as a kid that grew up on the SNES.
Mortal Kombat Rocks
Kung Lao cutting everyone head off a lot of times
My favorite 😭😭😭😭
U r no 1 player good playing #Mk2
It's a Brutal Game Like Brute Force.
for some reason I prefer this version of MKII over the SNES or Arcade one, even though both are superior
Same here, i cant explain it sometimes its not about graphics. Sometimes its about pure enjoyment
The snes version is superior in almost every aspect however I will say the genesis version in terms of gameplay is much more smoother and as much as I don't like the genesis ost I will say there's a few tracks that are good.
Cool vid but this is TAS right? feels like it a lot
