Problem with this car is the price. Chuck those extras on that Henry mentions and it's a £27k car, Audi are discounting brand new S3's to that price, and on finance an S3 is £20 a month more, I think the S1 (And I'm not denying it's a brilliant, class of its own car) is too expensive. Just my Opinion.
A45 AMG has the same problem, big car price for a small car with a small engine, be it turboed to max. Unless you absolutely want that combination it does not make any sense to pay so much for a small car, not when there are equally fast cars for much less money.
EVO proving once again they are one of the best when it comes to proper tests and some nice production values. Would love to see Henry and Chris Harris do a full length film together.
All wheel drive is so popular these days. I've driven a WRX, a Legacy, and a Courtryman S All4. They can all be pretty fun in the snow, but they're just so dull when it's dry. This winter was the worst Detroit has ever seen and yet, the roads were often clear of snow the majority of the time, so the amount of time you can actually enjoy cars with AWD is extremely limited. I drove my '09 Miata around this entire winter with a good set of snow tires on, and it was just as fun in the snow, as capable as I needed it (I was never stuck once), better at doing donuts, and when the snow was clear, so much more fun. After this winter, unless I move out to the country, I see no reason for me to ever own a car with AWD. If I needed more room than the Miata, I'd get an FR-S.
Wow you must be one hell of a driver and the only Miata owner in the city of Detroit lol. I work in Detroit and for the most part the freeways were marginally clear but not the regular streets though. Detroit really only plows downtown. So if you stay down there and parked in a parking garage then yeah. But without those conditions then you would probably have gotten stuck. Even with snow tires the Miata just doesn't have the weight for traction not to mention it's rear wheel drive. And also your Miata and it's snow tires don't mean squat when there is ice under the snow. If you really stay in the city of Detroit (which I doubt) then you would know the wonky weather patterns. It would warm up and melt the snow all so it can get cold again and turn into ice at night...and then snow another 6 inches the next day.(gotta love Michigan winters)give me an awd car any day so I can safely dodge people like you when you spin out.
Which WRX? The newer ones are great even in the dry, but you have to actually hoon it properly. It's no oversteer monster, but you can do great 4 wheel drifts if you know what you're doing.
turshin I live in Dearborn, but I go to school at U of D. I drove down town plenty this year, and I did not get stuck once. I know about the weather this year, I was here. There is a common misconception that you need either front or all wheel drive in the snow. Nope. All you need in a city like Detroit is a garage so your car doesn't get buried after plowing and a proper set of snow tires. A rear wheel drive car will do just fine. Those taxi drivers in Crown Vics do well enough. There is nothing about the Miata that would make it less snow worthy than one of those. It's lighter, yes, but it also has narrower tires. I drove on the ice this year with snow on it. I wasn't slipping around anymore than anyone else. Does my wife's Countryman do better? Yes, but the Miata with proper tires is more fun in the dry, and capable in the snow.
99% of the video was this guy talking about the A1 and 1% of the video actually showed the bloody thing. Well done. I'll buy you presenter guy. Do you come with satnav as standard or is it an extra?
Audi should consider going back to WRC, yes sure VW has the Polo WRC which is a great WRC car, but the world needs to have the words Audi and S1 back in WRC.
the only s1 that suits in wrc is a banned one. And they dont make cars like that or even similar to that anymore because almost all modern cars are so whimpy in comparison.
Great review! 968? Like the 90's 994 based car? Man! I haven't heard anyone talk about that in forever! (regarding most of all youtube car channels) I would love to see a used car buyers guide about the 968 and/or 944. Or maybe a modern review of older cars? That would be awesome.
Been almost 2 years with S1 sportback, No this car isnt undesteeer as ppl said about, its netral, I got 3 audi’s in my garage including TTS, This S1 is amazing and Sleeper you can play with! When ppl talk about money, Lol... Life is to sort we can only enjoy life while we young ... This one is perfect small sleeper faster as it is.
The only S1 I saw in this vid was in between roughly the 4:40 - 5:40 minute marks. The rest of the segment was just some bloke tootling around in some non descript boring little hatchback...
My Audi have come a long way. This is about 90kg lighter than the much larger S3 from way back in 2002. Similar power, similar drivetrain. Infact it's a pretty lazy effort considering 12 years of "development".
Man there's a lot of idiots floating around these days....please don't talk about something you're clearly totally and utterly clueless about. Engineering clearly isn't your thing (but don't feel bad about, 95% of people in this comment section are like you). Go take an interest in something more suited for your levels of intelligence....like postmark collecting....
ryanmail2004 Here is the reason why YOU are a moron (making ill thought out comments while rubbishing someone with a valid point) and an idiot. That would have been a good point up to about 5 years ago when newly designed (read that - newly DESIGNED -not just new reg plates on old models) cars started getting lighter again. Or if almost every other car of this size wasn't way lighter. Considering this is a lot smaller car than the S3 - in the next class or two down - it's very heavy for what it is. Put another way so you can see the point instead of just kissing Audi ass - almost every other hatch in it's class is lighter. Even a few hatches from the next size up are comparable. 1340kg for something supermini size is way overweight even today with all the excuses about crash safety. This is smaller than cars like the Clio, Fiesta, etc yet outweighs the sporty versions by a large margin. Oh and even the Golf R - roughly the size of the S3 and also AWD is only 60kg heavier than this. It also manages 296hp from a very similar engine/drive system.
ryanmail2004 The clio 200 is almost 200kg lighter while being larger. The Fiesta ST is almost 100kg lighter while being larger. The corsa VXR almost 120kg lighter - again larger. Even according to Audi's own specs the S1 is 150kg heavier than the 2.0 diesel A1 which is itself 150kg heavier than the 1.2tfsi. Also you're mixing tuned cars up with standard ones. The point is as it leaves the showroom this thing is overweight and compared to what is possible from that engine underpowered. The why's aren't relevant because as a customer you can't walk in and say "well I like this but can you tune it up a bit for me?". This is only the way it is because after they milk the money from it there will be an RS1. That should have at least a decent slug of extra power and if there is any common sense at Audi drop at least 50kg.
A lot of people buying Audis around EU do so because of the quattro and wet/snowy weather handling, so, yes. Obviously Audi thinks so too, considering they organized the test ride where they did. If you don't agree with their way of thinking, there are other cars for you.
Amazing how this thing destroys similar sized hot hatches (208, fiesta, cooper, clio) and even destroys larger (Focus', Megane, Astra VXR) in a straight line and when the roads get wet
I wish they sold this car here in Canada. We get the same cars as the Yanks. They won't pay for premium small performance cars. Damn shame. Oh well. I'll enjoy my S4.
Right, who's paying You to go on about the original Quattro S1 all the time? (Audi? Ok I see.) It was a flawed rally-car and didn't stand a chance against the competition from Peugeot, Lancia or even Ford. No matter what Audi tries to tell us..
I'm sorry but this is just a jumped-up Fabia/Polo with a Golf GTI engine in it. Also, it looks little different to an A1 which isn't the most exciting looker. Maybe they'll do a an RS-1 with some muscular bodywork and a massive price tag. Not keen on this new S1, the original Group B S1 in this video clearly shows the road Audi could have gone down, building a bespoke barnstormer. Instead, you've got a slightly odd-looking supermini on your drive and despite the Quattro and performance, it just doesn't excite.
Drivers care. If you think that 4wd is a gimic then this car is clearly not for you! Best stick to a nice safe comfortable economical fwd for real life ehy?
TheFlyingPineapple Well, I guess it depends on where you live. At least here in Austria (Europe) there are much more sensible choices if you are into something fast/small. It's the same story with the Q3. Heavily overpriced cars for people who care more about the badge than what they get for the money. It's the sort of car young policemen or nurses drive over here merely to show off that they can afford an "Audi". Audi has become the mark for people who would have just recently bought a BMW. And because of the models Q3 & 1 people who don't have big bucks can finally afford them. Don't get me wrong, there might be nothing wrong with this car, but the people who buy them are - at least over here - idiots. This might be a regional problem also because of the near distance to the "Wörthersee" and the yearly held VW/Audi-meetings. I nor my friends who are a bit more in "car culture" would ever consider buying one of those things...
okumonux In terms of pricing, it isn't too bad for a premium hot hatch. It's cheaper than something like a Golf GTI, in the UK at least. Potentially being stereotyped for driving an Audi wouldn't put me off buying one, if I were in the position to.
Perhaps it would be a little more constructive to say what cars you would choose instead in this segment or other segment for the same price and why. Seams your just dishing out empty statements - Prove me wrong and bring on what you find good taste in cars...
Audi should make a rs1
That would be a beast 😈
Ravesh Dadalani Just take the S1 and reprog it. You can get 300hp and around 25% more torque.
This is why we love Audi! What an amazing little car!
5:30 Is that Group B S1 understeering mid-air?
Problem with this car is the price. Good idea on the collaboration.
Would love to get an Audi S1 when I'm 18 but it's a bit expensive. Better get saving
How did you get on?
Big fan of the S1. Think I would miss a couple of holidays in order to get a 135i, though. Great review guys.

Which WRX? The newer ones are great even in the dry, but you have to actually hoon it properly. It's no oversteer monster, but you can do great 4 wheel drifts if you know what you're doing.
nbrigdan The generation just before the current one. Four wheel drifts ain't happening in the dry on public roads.
turshin I live in Dearborn, but I go to school at U of D. I drove down town plenty this year, and I did not get stuck once. I know about the weather this year, I was here. Good review Andy Murray!
How does it compared to the gulf GTi?
Great video. Do you have any more videos of that small shot of the cutaway AWD ?
99% of the video was this guy talking about the A1 and 1% of the video actually showed the bloody thing. Well done. I'll buy you presenter guy. Do you come with satnav as standard or is it an extra?
What is the 0-60?
What a beauty. Too bad we won't be able to buy this in Canada as it's not available.
Audi should consider going back to WRC, yes sure VW has the Polo WRC which is a great WRC car, but the world needs to have the words Audi and S1 back in WRC.
yes!

Henry. Love ya work. Vids and magazine articles.
Nice you have a decent engine in a small hatch with manual trans, I might trade in my A4 within the year to get back to some fun driving.
this or gti?
In the UK, how does the pricing of this S1 compare with the VW Golf R?
Terrence LaBroix
Audi s1 (3dr) 25 600
Audi s1 (5dr) 26 355
Vw golf R (3dr) 31 685
Vw golf R (5dr) 32 340
Put an Audi 5 cylinder TTRS/RS3 turbo engine in there, give it some modifications at MTM for 472 bhp and you've got a crazy fast car ;)

I had no idea Dr. Who does car reviews
great review
Every reviewer says that this car is amazing, fun too drive and sporty. It's drivers car.
Unless they've created a custom version of the haldex V it won't be a 60:40 front rear split without slip. It will be 90:10 front rear
what yellow is that?
vegas yellow
Have to say I really like this little car :D
Bring this to the US please!
That is not an S1, the car on the right at 4:30......... IS AN S1!!!!!!
Brilliant little car.
Love this review
Been almost 2 years with S1 sportback, No this car isnt undesteeer as ppl said about, its netral, I got 3 audi’s in my garage including TTS, This S1 is amazing and Sleeper you can play with! @5:13 watch out for pedestrians??? Shit they better move out the way
If you really wonder why Audi choose forest roads in northern Sweden to launch new S1, youre definitly the wrong man to review it..
Great video.
Do yourself a favor and watch this with automatic captions on... and you're welcome:)
Not a fan of Audi but that looks a bit fun. Good potential 👍

you lost me at understeer.
Please, please, please review the new Golf R :D
daniel radcliffe?? is that you?!?
why do they take the cars on snow for test drives[reviews]whats the point?????
I want this audi
TT-RS engine swap please and i will forget every bit of TDI from that company !
I love it...I am sucker for 2 doors hatch...:)
hmm needs dry roads and summer tyres and then a proper review.
This guy makes me sleep, he seems so bored doing the best job in the world! Come on, where is that enthusiasm?
But come on! That same engine is 300hp on the Golf R, why take away 70hp from it.
Because the S3 has that engine.
smaller turbo in s1
Like the commercial
Audi S1 tested by Dr Who
Sorry Evo but should we really give a fuck about how the car behave on snow?
Considering it is a quattro car. Yes. Considering it snows in many places around the world. Yes. Considering you can drift in snow. Yes.
A lot of people buying Audis around EU do so because of the quattro and wet/snowy weather handling, so, yes. Obviously Audi thinks so too, considering they organized the test ride where they did. If you don't agree with their way of thinking, there are other cars for you.
dbauernf
thats true. I bought an A4 quattro since i live in norway :)
Quattro is priceless on winter roads :)
Where do you live? On an island?!
You are a squirrel.
Lovely car. Audiiiii!
#sideburns
Amazing how this thing destroys similar sized hot hatches (208, fiesta, cooper, clio) and even destroys larger (Focus', Megane, Astra VXR) in a straight line and when the roads get wet
off the line it certainly will but everywhere else I agree destroy is abit too strong a word
interested how these handle though wouldnt be too suprised if a Fiesta St is better through a corner
Don't really understand the S1 but i guess there is a small niche there
I wish they sold this car here in Canada. We get the same cars as the Yanks. They won't pay for premium small performance cars. Damn shame. Oh well. I'll enjoy my S4.

it understeers..boring
It understeers when you shit your pants already
anglovirtual it's very neutral not like other shit cars. AUDI is the best.
Cool little car. But I would consider buying the Seat Leon Cupra with about 40 HP more, faster 0-100 km/h, DSG as standard and a way lower pricetag.
over power this its fast than porscha
Obviously.
Doesn't seem as fun as the new Fiesta ST.
# You're Very Patient2 supply side % 11
I'm sorry but this is just a jumped-up Fabia/Polo with a Golf GTI engine in it. Also, it looks little different to an A1 which isn't the most exciting looker. Maybe they'll do a an RS-1 with some muscular bodywork and a massive price tag. Not keen on this new S1, the original Group B S1 in this video clearly shows the road Audi could have gone down, building a bespoke barnstormer. Shame that canadians can't buy this car...
not an s1 :(
Yes it is. Read the badge on it !
@@oddities-whatnot true s1 is the urquattro
I'd much rather buy a 328i. Same money, much better looking, much bigger, much more practical every day, as fast in all ways.
Looks like seat ibiza cupra from 10+ years a go...
It's a Skoda Fabia with a few different badges, porkie ugly looking thing aswell...
*cough* 4wd *cough*?!
Bit like your momma?
benpowersification who cares about a shitty 4wd?
it's not like it matters in real life.
Drivers care. If you think that 4wd is a gimic then this car is clearly not for you! Best stick to a nice safe comfortable economical fwd for real life ehy?
Only someone completely clueless (you) would say that.
It has a look for women target, not for men. I dont like it, but i recognize is a good car.
A car for people with no taste in cars at all.
I hardly see how. It's a high-quality, great looking, fast hatchback - seems like a pretty good setup.
TheFlyingPineapple
Well, I guess it depends on where you live. At least here in Austria (Europe) there are much more sensible choices if you are into something fast/small. It's the same story with the Q3. Its a insult to even name this car Audi S1.
