    We've been waiting for a super-hot Audi A1 for years, now there's an S1. It's small, powerful and damn good fun. But is it a hyperhatch?

    Props up to Audi for dropping the sporty version of the car only with a manual gearbox. That's how it should be done.

    • @Emon_Lusk_
      @Emon_Lusk_ 5 лет назад +3

      its only because they didnt have enough space left to put the automatic transmission, was already tight with the EA888 and the Quattro system

    • @Drako_RS
      @Drako_RS 4 года назад +2

      @@Emon_Lusk_ they had the choice, go for manual + 4wd or go for s tronic + fwd.
      there were versions made of both, luckely they chose the 4wd + manual

      Personally I’m really disappointed they didn’t drop a DSG version as I would have gone for that. Saying that I went for the polo GTI and can’t fault it 🥰

As far as safety standards and emissions go, I'd rather embrace the standards of the Mid-eastern countries, where there is no fuss about bullshyt safety and emission standards. My German employer has deals with certain auto manufacturers, Audi included... I can get a 5000-6000 Euro discount on the S1 :P Which, makes the extra toys that you'd have to normally pay for basically free.
    Then again, there is always the Fiesta ST, which is cheaper and apparently offers almost the same amount of fun, too.

    Uh its not a hyperhatch, please stop exaggerating the position of these cars (BMW i8-supercar?) We all know that an RS model would be the hyper hatch type similar to the RS3 or even the quattro. I love the videos I'm just not a fan of all the over hype.

    Nice review, except that it's ludicrous to say you cannot have a 'proper' sports car without a manual transmission. Someone should tell McLaren their P1 is not sporty. A DSG would be fine, if not better than a manual. It's mostly a matter of personal preference I think.

    FYI the Audi s1 isn’t a hyper hatch as it doesn’t have 350+Bhp. A few would be the rs3 m140i Ford Focus rs etc

    • @sunsetgarage755
      @sunsetgarage755 Год назад

      Sorry buddy, but 350+BHP is achievable with just a stage 1 tune & nothing else. These cars were massively under-tuned by Audi so they didn’t embarrass their other S cars & even some RS cars. I’ve had a tuned RS3 & the S1 I have now has faster acceleration & much faster cornering. As for a M140i or Focus RS, they wouldn’t even come close. I’m betting you’ve never even driven one have you?

    Ok so this uses a haldex system (half arsed 4wd) and a very detuned version of the 2.0T. Is anyone else thinking the glaringly obvious way forward is an RS1 with proper quattro, better brakes and about 300hp?

    • @hunghuge7717
      @hunghuge7717 10 лет назад

      ryanmail2004 Even if they couldn't fit a proper Quattro system in they could at least engineer something better than haldex for it. The golf R already uses pretty much a 300hp version of this engine anyway. The only reasons that isn't in this are corporate. Either it would take all the golf R sales or there is an RS1 in the pipeline.

    • @Stroh538
      @Stroh538 10 лет назад

      ryanmail2004 it's the same engine as you get in the s3 which I think is pretty awesome for that price and if they make an RS1 it'd cost more than the S3 but it'll be smaller and just as fast if not slower...whats the point of that...

    • @pfflyers1
      @pfflyers1 10 лет назад +20

      Alejandro Morales It only kicks in with slippage. Even then its 80/20. The quatro is 40/60 all the time ....hugh difference

    • @PKmode
      @PKmode 10 лет назад +4

      Alejandro Morales Sure, in a Veyron or Adventador, the engine and trans is in the rear though. This means that the bulk of the power is mainly sent to the rear wheels. In a front engine set up like the S1, Golf R, S3, TT-RS even, the bulk of the power is sent to the front wheels. It's the same principal, just backwards. The real problem is that the haldex system in the front engine cars is limited to give no more power to the rear wheels than 40% even with a haldex controller set to race. Image for verifaction: www.hpamotorsport.com/images/drive/haldexoverlay.jpg

    • @danielmaia3559

      Alejandro Morales
      only the standard Quattro models and the S models use a Haldex system. It sends power to the rear wheels when it´s needed, not permanently.
      The RS models use Quattro permanent AWD system, in which power is sent to all 4 wheels all the time.

    There are a lot of cheaper and better handling alternatives out there - Peugeot 208 GTi, Clio RS, Citroen DS3R, Mini Cooper S. That "S1" in my opinion is just an expensive toy, that is fast in a straight line, but flawed in the handling department (mainly cause of the stupid AWD system, but with the exception of R8, Audi never had a good handling car). Hot hatches have to be cheap and fun. But nowadays, people are interested in other things, aren't they?

      Unless you fancy something that's actually rewarding to drive and has turn-in...which this doesn't.

      And you plan on resolving that with a hatchback? If that is your priority, you'll looking into the wrong class, get an actual performance car, hot hatches are meant to be silly aspirational cars, they're not sportscars. This one along side the 500 abarth 695 biposto are as silly as it gets. All the other ones are just trying way too hard to be EVERYTHING

    As a fan of Audi and an Audi driver myself, i like it. But the fact that they call it the S1 is killing me. Come on VW, theres only 1 true S1, and it's from the 80s!

      Did you say the same thing when the regular A1 came out?

      We don't speak about that one...

      You do realise that the rally car was called A1, then A2 and then S1 E1 (later E2)?

    • @AKhellbindeR
      @AKhellbindeR 9 лет назад

      triss85 what exactly are you trying to say? they should have left the S1 name alone, also, the comment is 7 months old..

    • @triss85
      @triss85 9 лет назад

      I realise that it is an old comment but I just don´t get why the Quattro S1 is special.
      It only won 2 rallyes, same as the A1 and the A2 won 9!!
      Likewise both the A1 and A2 won the Championship which the S1 never did.
      I just don´t think there is a problem with the name, the real problem would be the A2 that came in ´99.

    I would only ever buy a used one in the future when the price drops. It's just not worth paying around £25,000 for a baby Audi. For that money you can buy a used 911 (a good one too) a 370z, a used M3, a used RS4 and some crazy AMG Mercedes. It's a cool little car, but not for that money.

    The 4 tailpipes looks daft on such a small car. The rest of the styling looks a bit ordinary and not much difference over the S-Line.

      But the thing with Audi S cars is that they always look a bit understated. More discrete. It’s something people might like. And yes I am replying to a 7 year old comment.

    Overrated over expensive FWD car made into a semi AWD car and it's so amazing. I smell marketing money here. Good think it's manual? Yeah it sure is. BUT the reason is cost cutting on a car already way too expensive.

    the real side is the left side!!!!

    • @HesteBremse
      @HesteBremse 10 лет назад +1

      Yes the right side is the left side, but if you stand in front of the car then the right side is the right side while the left side then is on the right side when seen from inside the car looking at the front. Though in some countries the right side for a person without a drivers license is the left side of the cabin, while the right side is the right side for those with a drivers license, albeit it might feel wrong for drivers with a a drivers license used to sit in the left side of the car, which in some countries are the right side, that many drivers should be sitting in, judging by how they drive in both sides of the road. Hope it clarified things.
