I know this review is old now, but here is someone who actually gets what this car was about. Great review from one of only a handful of reviewers who don’t lament the absence of an automatic box. I only recently found out they even existed & went out & bought one & was blown away with how quick & nimble this is. Anyone who knocks the performance hasn’t really driven one. Even with a stage 1 tune it easily does 0-100 kph in the low 4’s without even trying, but it’s the cornering speed where they’re untouchable. You’d have to buy a TTS or TTRS to match the corner entry & exit speed these little rockets have which makes it one of the greatest little modern trackable cars you can find on the 2nd hand market.
Apologies for the unsolicited contact but I’m in the middle of trying to find the right S1 - have already decided to get a remap and clutch done and am after recommendations on where to get the work done… any advice appreciated. Many thanks.
Audi S1 is not bad, but the Polo R WRC (Street) is much more exciting in my opinion! The Volkswagen engineers have put so much effort in every detail. And that car is challenging in not breaking the speed limits. :D As a German driver it is such a great thing to get on the Autobahn, put the pedal to the metal and turn on the left overtaking lane and cruise along with 200 km/h. =D Love it!
@@jamescort1027 been running mine hard on track for 4 years so far not a single issue so I dunno 🤷🏻♂️. Service them well and they run for years. It’s when you abuse them without looking after them they become unreliable as to be expected
Quality review! Better than some car shows! Im looking at you 5th gear. Did not even know you where capable of taking thing seriously, love your work. KEEP IT UP!
Awesome review and awesome car. Wish we could smuggle one of these here in Canada, as I've neither seen an A1 or S1 of any shape and form. I'm a sucker for drivers cars and Audi has been impressive lately.
Does any one knows what's he saying in the last bit about 6:06? The subtitle say's it's "releas your inner fucked up mood" but I'm pretty sure it's something else.
this is one of the coolest hothatches (cant find em, im 'murican), you guys got me interested in hot hatches, by the way could you guys do a review on either the scirroco, polo gti, golf gti, or golf r?
In the UK Audi and VW hit hatches aren't know to be the best. The renaultsport megane 265/trophy is renown to be one of, if not the best hot hatch available currently. It's an epic car!
They have an A3 Clubsport that will eat the A45 AMG alive, might not be properly produced but they say if they do then it would be out in 2016 i think. 520bhp 0-62 in 3.6 seconds.
comparing the S1 to the S3, same cc, but the S1 surely will be lighter, but seems significantly less HP, that the S3, what's the difference with the tuning?
the A1 quattro looks amazing but i have to say im in the group that doesn't like the S1. its very feminine to my eyes but the yellow might not be helping haha
Nice car, but doesn't really deserve the S1 badge i think. They should have done like BMW did with the 1M. On the other hand i'm sure that they really don't want to be compared with BMW saying that "They just did like BMW calling it 1S and not S1" so they called it S1.
Well the S1 has been around for longer and as history with Audi naming they always have 'RS' and then a number to match the stock car in it's series (RS66=A6,RS always first). And also, 1S sound very strange.
This looks good, I like the simple dash and I love that there's finally a car again that is a car, not a full automatic electronic box on wheels. I do still prefer RWD though, because, well, I'm sure you all know why :p Still not a fan of the outside, all cars look the same. But each to their own, you all go buy new cars, I'll have my fun with older ones ^^ (as in: late 80's, early 90's)
Amen to that brother. The S1 and A1 are properly good and for some reason, hatches should either be fwd or awd. Rwd is the best layout, but it just doesn't suit hatches.
Wait.. since when are audis known for bonehard suspensions.. I have had one of those and they are comfy as f*ck. I would have fallen asleep if the exhaust wouldn't have been so sexy.
+Kommentator are you in the UK? Audi sport lines plus our crap roads = bad ride. soft boat like Volvo's are best here. for some reason everyone wants sporty and sporty means hard suspension with no suppleness.
it doesnt matter ! look , its just a for its design , not for efficiency . you might think its stupid , but S1 must look more aggresive than A1 . i mean you cant just lay here completly same design from A1 . making car look better doesnt make it good car , but it makes different car .
Kaisuke971 and so ? i guess S1 just looks good with 4 exhaust pipes . it looks more like sports car . race car ! amount of pipes really doestn matter ! look . old R8 V8 has actually 4 pipes and new V10 has only 2 . the result ? they just look different !
COSECCO It actually makes sense, as you have to keep an overall balance, for the look. I personally think that 4 is too much for a so little car, as it is for the golf R. It's just weird and cheap/useless looking...
Kaisuke971 well , now i personally think 4 exhaust pipes are the best amount for the actuall design . if you will just look at the car ... just imagine how it will look just with 2 exhaust pipes . the design will be unbalanced . i mean that car has alot SMALL aggresive details like : in front bumper there down 5 small holes . well so in rear bumper there must be something familiar . you cant just make car look different in front and different in rear . every car has own basic design style . this is a model S of an A1 . S must make that car look aggresive (like every sports car)
Fully agree with Joao ... I care more about how this thing drive ... don't care much for looks (unless it's a woman, then only i care about the looks).
Yea 252 bhp and you forgot the 3800 pounds on a 6x6 ft car lol ... Ughh idk the exact weight but that would of been an amazing number 10 yes ago on such a small car nowadays with all the federal safety requirements it ain't shit..
probably drinks oil like all audi 2.0 litres. still i can't make up my mind between this and a 2015 sti....german looks and refinement OR more room and performance?
Depending on where you live one car could be better than the other. If you live in a place with very small roads and only spaces to park small cars get Audi. if you live in a place where the roads are big and you can park any car anywhere definitely get the STI

Definitely a distinctly different vibe in these older videos. This video makes me FEEL like it’s 2014 again. Good review.

Yellow = 15 hp
Blue = 50hp

Kaisuke971 Michelin stickers + 250-300hp i can prove it
/watch?v=cDRkHXMHqFo
is it true?
@@mrHighLifex Yes.
Love this little Audi. Imagine the RS1 though :o that would be awesome
They have a working rs1 concept. Google it. Its to die for.
Oh thanks. I'll have a look
RS1 never happened because this car didn’t sell well enough
2:15 looks like he's doing 200 mph
Still one of the best & most honest reviews on the S1.
one of the best reviews I have ever seen!!! great job
Thanks :D

Great. I can save 10 grand & not buy a TT.
Love mine, been running at 445hp and 440 ft lbs for the last 4 years of ownership :D
Was it reliable tho at that spec? Thinking of buying one,James.

What a blast from the past.
Still an avid supporter of these guys!
Can't wait to see this Audi on the WRC ! ! !
Will not happen as long as the Polo is taking part on the WRC...
This video made me go out and buy one lol.
Great review. Going to look at one tomorrow 😈
Did you buy it?
Awesome review and awesome car. Wish we could smuggle one of these here in Canada, as I've neither seen an A1 or S1 of any shape and form. I'm a sucker for drivers cars and Audi has been impressive lately.
i think after the lancia evo this is the second car that really looks amazing in yellow in the last years
Does any one knows what's he saying in the last bit about 6:06? The subtitle say's it's "releas your inner fucked up mood" but I'm pretty sure it's something else.
Release your inner "Walter Röhrl". He was/is a famous German rally driver.... :)
n.stoeterau
Thank you!!
No worries! :)

In the UK Audi and VW hit hatches aren't know to be the best. The renaultsport megane 265/trophy is renown to be one of, if not the best hot hatch available currently. It's an epic car!
Renault has recently made quite a few track focused hatchbacks with more power, im not surprised they've gained even more popularity.
Because they don't have a German badge on the nose.
When you get your license, try one, and find out.
Audi for life!
Finally an exciting car from audi
Very nice review! Very watchable! I liked it! But I liked the background music even more! A big thumbs up to Tom for creating this cool song!
RIP Car Throttle, this was back when CT was good.
Manual transmission wasn't really a choice. It was either DSG FWD or MT Haldex. Also going Haldex means 4 individual suspension
'An Audi that need no introduction': proceeds to give introduction
People stood IN FRONT OF the rally cars to take pics?! The whole thing looked so dangerous haha. (And wickedly fun).
Uhh, someone's had German lesson! Pronounced Walter Röhrl perfectly :)
Great review!
what about the 2 series? how is it compared to this?
That competes with the A3 not the A1
So is it a better hot hatch than the S3? Basically the same package, shrunken a bit and 6k off the price.
I think the audi s3 has a bit more body roll.
How does this cars bigger brother compare to the A45 AMG?
Have to wait until the RS3 turns up :)
They have an A3 Clubsport that will eat the A45 AMG alive, might not be properly produced but they say if they do then it would be out in 2016 i think. 520bhp 0-62 in 3.6 seconds.
finally a hot hatch worth buying
Love this S1
I rather have a a1 Quatro than a A45AMG
Nice S1
isn't the mini in its class? it also offers 4wd
No no my friend. Mini coopers are strictly FWD.
647killa LOL!
www.mini.co.uk/model-range/newcountryman/
Neil Magill Countryman tho
There is nothing from mini that even comes close to the s1.. except for the price, of course
There is nothing from mini that even comes close to the s1.. except for the price, of course
This is my dream 😱
I still like the TT a bit more...but this is a great looking car!
i really love this little car...and to me it looks the business..
Man i apreciate that! :D
I need that car!
comparing the S1 to the S3, same cc, but the S1 surely will be lighter, but seems significantly less HP, that the S3, what's the difference with the tuning?
The mtm one is insane
AWD im impressed :) and its yellow bro
That's pretty obvious that an S Audi has AWD...
"Quattro" = AWD...
Kaisuke971 yeah ur right
Then add a revo package to it and it will easiliy we be kicking out 300+ bhp, possibibly leading to a sub 5 second 0-60 and even possibly a sub 4
Or the APR stage 3 turbo upgrade, 450hp
the A1 quattro looks amazing but i have to say im in the group that doesn't like the S1. its very feminine to my eyes but the yellow might not be helping haha
The E36 Loon S1 comes only in Manual so it can’t really be that feminine can it?
I really the Audi S1. I'm thinking of selling my JCW Mini and purchasing one.
Wgat about the audi a1 competition line
Flat steering wheel impress' the ladies
but is it worth £9k more than a fiesta ST?
Ask it’s taillights!
Might this car be a cheaper alternative to the A45 AMG?
Not the same class. The A45 is more like the opponent of 1/2 series and audi RS3
I think it is a lot more fun, you cannot use the power of the a45, but you could really use the small weight of the s1.
Kommentator You cannot use the power of the A45 mate ? The car is 360 (now 381) hp not 1500... It is very usable.
Kaisuke971 Have you ever floored a car with 381hp on a road with a 60 mph speed limit?
Kommentator Have you ever heard of country roads, or canyons ? All roads are not straight/Highways dude.
The A45 is an uphill mountain road killer.
Bigger than a integrale more torque. Clutch foot a bit tight..lhd wud have more. Still takes miles off my lancia.
with 15k you can add some wheels, spoiler, exhaust and flash the ecu, and you'd still have money left in your pocket.
3:13 Well, who doesnt love a nice Zonda??
Looks mega😍
Just 1 quattro exist! The S1 !!!!!!!4444
Hot hatch fun love it
I'd love one❤😎👍!!
God i love that car such a wicked hot hatch would love one 25k doesn't actually seem to much for a 4 wheeldrive car
I don't like the German reliability, but this car is my fantasy...
Nice car, but doesn't really deserve the S1 badge i think. They should have done like BMW did with the 1M.
On the other hand i'm sure that they really don't want to be compared with BMW saying that "They just did like BMW calling it 1S and not S1" so they called it S1.
look an audi S isn´t a rival to an M,whilst the RS and the M are rivals (and in RS6 avant, gotta love that 300plus kp/h station wagon tough)
Well the S1 has been around for longer and as history with Audi naming they always have 'RS' and then a number to match the stock car in it's series (RS66=A6,RS always first). And also, 1S sound very strange.
it might have a sound enhancer wich makes the car sound louder, but it has an unnatural sound tough
Kaisuke971 That's a stupid comment
The most beautiful car audi has ever made is the b7 audi rs4 that's a real audi this looks like a fiat whats with the designer was he cross eyed.
wasn't 15hp extra with orange? sorry, watched to much DM
Great car.
But this quad tips trend is a bit too much.

seems like you like yellow cars :D
Audi s1 or bmw 525d f10
I understand taxis now
I don't like what they do to the exhaust pipes.. Same as r golf..
And why are you driving on those small roads, its shaky as during an earthquake

If you put it besides the A1 quattro, it just looks soooooooo extremely boring.
You are one of those, aren't you?
I guess pigs do fly!
Good but I'd save 10 grand & buy the Fiesta ST
Adam Finan what's wrong with its design?
Now that he said that ... it does kinda of look like an Angry Birds pig ...
The AM Vanquish has three time the cylinders and half the exhaust heads...
Wtf Audi, this one should have 2 exhaust pipes, it's enough.
it doesnt matter ! look , its just a for its design , not for efficiency . you might think its stupid , but S1 must look more aggresive than A1 . i mean you cant just lay here completly same design from A1 . making car look better doesnt make it good car , but it makes different car .
