Is The Retro Inspired Audi A1 Quattro As Mad To Drive as it is To Look At?

  • A few years ago, Audi had a genius idea - stick the motor from the S3 into a tiny A1. Not wanting to abandon their trademark quattro system, the car was engineered using TT RS parts and given a makeover right out of the 80s - it looks mad, but what is it like to drive?

      The old transitions between the cars were more dramatic, although that could be the new 'cinefilm' overlay cluttering and reducing the impact. But neither the driving shots or car models now featured are as exciting to my eyes. Others may disagree of course. I do understand the intention to show the breadth of car content featured, not just high performance cars. But it gets lost with the dark final welding shot.
      Can you go back to the old one, try to add in the Pendle branding and perhaps slip in some daily drive cars? And the old music was better too.

    • @JayEmmOnCars

    Hi, the general notion that Audi built this as a testbed, got me curious, why would Audi bother to engineer the A1 Quattro with permanent AWD to then build the A1 S1 which has Haldex AWD??
    Also why do the major content creators present this world view when it doesn’t fit logically.
    The far more plausible explanation is that this is a Homologation for the S1 RX EKS Rallycross campaign which kicked off in 2014, plenty of time for Audi to sell its 333 A1 Quattro special editions which sit so far apart from the S1 in engineering.
    Indeed it explains why Audi had to go to such lengths to fit permanent AWD in such a tiny chassis which was not engineered for it & better explains why they only bothered to make 333 of them, and indeed the cost of permanent AWD didn’t make it into the S1.
    The A1 Quattro also uses several bespoke pieces and borrows from other models extensively to make everything work. Indeed the car probably does feel like more of a development car than a finished production car.
    Indeed the S1 probably owes a lot to this car but to say it was a development car for the S1 is an injustice to the A1 Quattro and it’s purpose and significance for the engineering involved.

    • @bollocks2usernames
      @bollocks2usernames 3 месяца назад +1

      Interesting perspective and I’ve pondered the homologation element too. Perhaps this was the vehicle (pun not intended) to getting Audi back in the rally game. Either way, the S1 is a superb car and the version of Haldex it has is decent in terms of the front / rear split. I will be driving two S1s and an A1 Quattro over the summer and am really looking forward to seeing how they differ back-to-back.
