When Porsche Built An Audi - The Legendary RS2, Driven

- The RS2 will always stand as an important car for Audi - the first car to wear an "RS" tag, and a unique collaboration between them and their VAG stablemate, Porsche.
With prices now around £100,000 for a mint condition car, I never thought I'd get the chance to drive an RS2 - that is until Audi let me have a go of their immaculate, super low mile example.

Trust me, 315hp was a massive amount for an estate car in those days.
For any car, I think the top subarus were around 220
This is still one of the fastest estates in the world and in the 90s it had the record. Back in the day when it was released it had all the hype about it because no one before even though about making a estate with Porsche/Ferrari power output in it..
300Hp is a big power even today, this is the performance cars starting point by today`s standards. The RS2 is capable of hitting 0-100km/h in around 4.8s, even today this is mind blowing number, there are lots of cars who can barely do that with 400 or 500hp under the hood. This car is electronically restricted to 260km/h top speed. I am not gonna talk about how much output can be gained from it if its going to be tuned..
315 is still powerful now, dont get fooled by the big power cars around as you can get bogged down with numbers. I mean its up there with the top hot hatch's like the golf r etc who are only now putting out that kinda power
Definitely tons of power for its day. Would have seemed like 500 or 600 hp today.
It was very fast. It could accelerate faster 0-30mph than a Formula 1 car!
exactly, I was like wtf is he speaking about?! 300HP back then was insane O_O
You're becoming a legend in making good contents sir.
Uffuk Gan I can’t agree more! Keep up the sterling work on the videos JayEmm
Yep, great variety. And - as Colin Ashby says - mercifully music-free.
I concur. I can see this channel doing very well indeed. Let’s just hope that he doesn’t become like the rest and buy a yawn fest Ferrari or similar and talk about that every time. 🤞🏻
Absolutely. This guy knows his shit! Keep up the excellent work.
@@Jay__C what the fuck? Lol
Great review of a legendary car. 315hp back in 1994 was a lot of power! 500E had 322, M5 3.8L had 340 and they were heavier.
Now, if only you could borrow an AMG "Hammer" for a ride...that would make my day, my whole month!
I fear that may take some time!
CTR yellow bird.
R5 turbo 2
Ford Falcon Tickford XR8! I honestly don't think there would be one in the UK or all of Europe though.
@@trentweston8306let’s all chip in for a trip to Australia then!
Becoming quite fond of the content on this channel. The reviewer reminds me of a younger Jeremy Clarkson
This car in this color with that interior and that engine is just incredible
Yes it was pure pornography back in 94
This is my absolute dream car. I don't think this particular dream will ever come true but I'm fortunate to have been born at the right time to see such a beautiful machine as this
My dad owned an Audi 80 B4 2dr Coupe with a 5 cylinder turbo before I was born in 1995, when we lived in Northern Ireland. I was too young to remember but he showed me photos, sitting on the optional larger wheels fitted to it from the factory. I forgot if it was actually an S2 or the model 'lower' than that but regardless, he told me that it was definitely the 20v 5 cylinder turbo, as it had incredible acceleration from mid range pulls, combined with that distinctive 5 cylinder warble. Unfortunately, my family had to sell it as we decided to live in Tokyo. Now he drives an E36 3 series to thread down the narrow roads in Japan.
Very cool
if it was a 5 cylinder turbo it was definitely the S2...I still want one ☹️
I had a four door version. When it hit 170km it morphed Into a skid steering drift beast. It loved doing 220kmph skid steering on the freeway.
It was so ridiculous. I sold it after a year and never bought a car that fast again.
I consider myself lucky too have survived that year.
I had a 1996 Audi S2 Coupe in Ming Blue back in the 90's and I feel in love with that car. You're description of it being' luke warm' is entirely accurate, but it was so smooth, yet totally planted on the road.
Cracking view of an icon. Saw one once on M6 and tailed it for miles admiring how cool it looked with it’s Porsche emblazoned callipers
I read at the time that Porsche refused to make an RS2 coupe as it would cannibalise Porsche sales
Well they where so close to going bankrupt that they had to either way
Excellent video, will never forget seeing my first RS2 and fell in love straight away. Thanks for the video, on to the V12 Q7...
This is great - it's awesome that these cars don't have to stay quiet in a museum or collection and can be enjoyed (even from afar) and shared. Good on Audi and others for allowing their prized vehicles (artifacts?) out every once in a while!
That 5 cylinder sound is hard to beat
👍Pretty jealous of all the awesome cars the US doesnt get. We can finally import RS2s to the US. Still have to wait a long time for the RS6 to be able for import.
'There's the direct joy to be had from driving this thing...' I love the way he describes
Owned one (Ragussa Green) for 3 years. Fastest bank-vault in the world and it does have immense charisma/coolness. Great review, Jay; summarises my feelings for it, too.
Why did you get rid of it?
@@shugthehornyhaggis To buy a 996 Turbo.
A true unicorn of a car, and a really fun review! Congrats on getting to drive one, and such a fine example. If only I could buy one more easily and affordably in the States.
Loooove the RS2! And the Nogaro blue color is classic 😍
Lovely, I had a red 94 S2 ABY coupe 10 or so years ago after wanting one for years. I believe is shared a downtuned RS2 lump. Great Q car factor. 230bhp standard and an ECU chip brought it up to 270. Sold it a few years later for a third of what they're worth now. Sounded beautiful on song. Still appears to be on the road somewhere. One of my favourite cars I owned and still miss it. There's some mental power 500+ S2s in Europe.
ABY is very different from ADU, Porsche went in and changed a lot of things.
Loving the blue on the inside and the outside. 💙
Fun fact: my dad's old Fiat Uno (the only car he ever bought new) used to be in a very similar shade of blue. 😁
James, that's my regular driving Road, up until 3 weeks ago I had a Nogaro Blue Audi S8, now replaced with a new M760li. I love driving around there.
Legend has it that whenever someone mentions the mirror controls are from an old Ferrari, the mirrors instantly stop working.
Mine still work :D Although it is a Coupé. But how come the controls are from a Ferrari, when the Ferrari was produced later than the Audi's using the controls? Mine is a 93' Coupé.
I think there's something to be said for something fast and comfy.
I really can't be doing with hard suspension and low profile tyres, there's just no point for most people.
Great get!
Wonderful car. Those rear strip lights are coming back.
Another great review, I am a massive fan of older cars and your vids are fantastic. Keep up the good work !
The A1 and Q7 didn't do anything for me but you've ended the week on the ultimate high, the RS2 is an absolute legend and a car I'd really relish owning. Could your cheesy grin have been any bigger? 😁
I owned an Audi Coupe and an Audi 90 Quattro 20v back in the days, and I still miss those cars.
I loved the S2 Coupe of this generation. Awesome. Test that if you can.
This Audi has always been in my top ten cars of all time...love your Chanel..😉
Watched a few videos now, and can safely say you're doing an excellent job! A British Doug Demuro is what we've needed!
Thankyou very much
Audi B5 RS4 ....... in Nagaro Blue, as i used to own one for 7x Years... now sadly sold + Great Vids, just joined the Club
Congrats on 40K Well deserved.
I used to have the 5 cylinder S6 turbo. I loved that car, but she had a drinking problem...
aye but Old Speckled 98Ron is cheaper than a pint of cheap ale ;o)
Being an Audi fan back in the day (owned B5 and B6 generation A4s, lost my passion for the brand around 2011), thanks for these Audi videos JayEmm!
Kean Keong Kok why don’t you like Audis anymore?
CAR XPERT XP They turned to shit
@@autoexpert3 Increasing signs of cost-cutting in newer Audis (e.g. external parts sharing with cheaper series or VW models), lesser instances of technical / engineering solutions unique to Audi brand, lack of design progression (even regression, at least based on my tastes). Lastly, too many reliability issues with my B6 A4.
Pretty much the same for me. Had RS2 , B5 RS4 and D3 S8 but then Audi's lost their quality.
Audis, sorry.
I sat in that car in the back seat as a teen on a drive from Hamburg to Berlin in the late 90s. Very fast car, very fast.
Been enjoying your fantastic reviews for a few months now. Very much enjoyed this one. I remember reading about this car when it first came out in my monthly subscription of 'Performance Car' magazine; those were the days. I was 14 when this car came out and I remember thinking it was one of the most exciting and special cars at the time; an Audi that was seriously fast and a supercar killer in many regards. Thanks for the reviews on all the interesting cars. I would say thanks for the hard work but, I imagine it's more fun than it is work 😉
You're totally correct in your comments - awesome car, understated, 0-60 pretty quick but torque is fantastic and that's where it scores. Handling takes but if getting used to, partially because brakes do let it down even though they're the so-called big reds from Porsche. Smiles per mile? Million!! I had one of these, this colour and just under 90k miles on it back in 2006-10. Regrets? Selling it!
The pinnacle in the wagon community, period! If I won the lottery I'd have one of these but opened up a bit, say about 450 hp, give or take🕶
Jay, thanks for THIS review🛎🛎
Nah keep it real. With lottery money you could buy a newer RS4 too and fettle that
@@visionist7 true but it's not boxy or has that cool tail light section!
@@klasseact6663 I think they make the lightbar aftermarket for the regular A2 Avants
This was a incredibly quick car in it's day, I'm sure this was able to match the 0 to 30 mph time of the Mclaren F1 in Autocar magazine's official road test.
Wtf is it with this guy? Makes damn good informative videos every time. Great work fella.
Cheers chap
I was lucky enough to be a Saturday boy at my local VAG dealer (Royal Berkshire Motor Company) when these came out.
Love a good Q-car!
Can anyone lend him an Alfa 156GTA Sportwagon? I believe they handled and sounded as good, if not better than the Audi’s Avants of that period. Certainly looked as good.
My dad had the s2 avant back in the uk, im told its up there as one of his favourite cars hes owned.
Rumour has it, the coolest comment received on this episode wins the car, so I claim my prize with this. In the interests of humankind, I hereby donate it back to The Audi Museum. Was great while it lasted baby. Thanks JayEmm, another superb programme in the bag and long may it continue. Peace,
Cheers Arran!
It’s a hard job but someone has to do it. Another great review as always!
Great review as always had an S2 coupe back in the early 90's lusted after this one though..
I know we are not talking about the same thing here ,but my 92 S4 turbo Quattro, it's an amazing car,it handles so beautiful
When I was 10 I saw a brand new one of these... In this colour. I had no idea at the time just how rare they were but even at that young age I knew this was no ordinary estate... The subtle 'Porsche' on the badge caught my attention. I would love one of these today but an example like this might be north of 80k *_if_* you can find one.
I know there's a lot of Car Review RUclipsrs, but you're definitely worth the subscribe. Great content, keep it up mate!
Thankyou, means a lot!
B5 RS4 - as an American who got their license in 00’ I’ve dreamt of the widebody - k04 car since I first saw it. Unfortunately like the RS2, we never got that in the states... I did own an S4 with the 2.7tt but I read somewhere the only parts they shared were the front doors... love the channel 🍺
Doug Demuro owns one of these. Same exact color etc. Very cool. 300+ HP is amazing for a car at that age. Nice.🔥🔥♥♥😎
Nice car the rs2. Saw a really nice Volvo 850 r the other day, also a nice hot estate car. 250 bhp 2.3 five pot if my memory serves me correct.
From a time when Audi made some really good cars. Still regret not getting a b5 S4 with the 2.7 twin turbo. Yes I know it was expensive to work on but it was a good looking car and made a good noise.
This is my "if I ever win the jackpot" car. There is NOTHING cooler.
Don't forget the Porsche 964 C2/C4 made at the same time only produced 250BHP, so 315HP wasn't bad for the day... I remember doing 152mph around the Millbrook test track with Chris Goodwin back in the mid-1990s and if you looked up at the top of the window frame you could see daylight between the frame and the car! Quite a few parts came from Porsche for this car, the wheels for example. A great car none the less...
Yeah 964 weight less than this wagon.
Got to be the Quattro. Beautifully put together piece of work.
Cheers
In 1995 the Audi RS2 with 315 horsepower was insane for a 4 door Avant/Wagon. In 95’ high performance cars had between 300 and 400 horsepower on average. The standard Corvette was only 300 hp. The most powerful Porsche 911 not counting the Turbo, was less than 300 hp. The Lotus Esprit S4S was 300 hp. The Ferrari F355 had 375 hp. The Honda/Acura NSX came in at under 300 hp with 276 hp and people were blown away. So yeah, 315 horsepower in a wagon with 4 doors was a lot of power and made the RS2 an amazing machine.
Nice, that's yer 40k! I have a soft spot for Audis, ran a couple of GT Coupe's back in the 90s, couldn't afford a proper Quattro. Great sound.
No joke i saw one at our school years ago and wondered the unusual styling and why it said porsche, later i realised it was this. Same color even. What a rarity, i might have a picture of it somewhere.
One of my favourite cars! Liked before i even watched it!
Nice review.
I saw one for sale around 2004 for £8k with 56k on the clock at a small salesroom on a quiet B road just outside Basildon, was sorely tempted but knowing my driving style would have lost me my license pretty sharpish, I'd also considered the RX-7 as well but for commuting into London from the Northern home counties a diesel estate was a more sensible choice, massively regret not getting it though as it would have been a laugh on a track!
There's a 25k mile model on autotrader now for £65k!!
Loved this cos it’s different RS 2 wow very rare car beautiful condition great vid and well presented 10/10
Most audi fans in the us would kill for this example
Great vid. The s2 was also available as an avant too.
Anyone wonder why an estate has the tilt front seats like a 3dr version.
How about one of the audi 200 v8s
Fabulous Jay
How about an original Audi Quattro?
Mr Boggy also the original subaru awd that came way before the audi quattro
You just can't beat the sound of the 5 pot.
I agree. Very distinctive imo .. That's what made me a fan of Audi.
How come these old Audis look a lot better than the new ones !?!?
Less Vorsprung
I would like to see an 85 Audi 200 Quattro or the first late 80s Audi V8. I am not a big fan of the modern Audi brand, that Audi Q5 with the V12 turbo diesel was awesome, but the Audis I like are the ones from the teens upto this RS Avant you just shown. Whats funny I use to love cars when I was growing up, it was my hobby and I made money by doing repairs, but I lost interest in the modern automobile, anything built from 2010 to now, yeah there are a few I like, but the average automobile is no different then a refrigerator, I hate to see someone try to restore one of these vehicles in 20 or so years from now. Great video
this is one of my all time favourite cars.
We've had a first generation S4 in our inventory for some reconditioning work, and I was curious about the blue weave carbon fiber, as it was wood trim in the Motor Week test. I thought someone may have added the carbon later, as it does indeed seem very early for that trend. Now it looks like I might have to hunt some down, as the panels have cracked (much like wood trim in a mid 2000's BMW).
1st time I see a guy driving in my area on YT.
had a chance to buy one of these in 2004 for £8500, low miles and FSH. Sadly needed a long distance commuter vehicle instead so got a Passat TDI est (which I've still got!). Only one of them would appreciated in value ... doh!
We have a green one of these with about 29k. Been off the road about 23 years; one day we will get it back on the road.
@jayemmoncars would love to see you road test an Audi S2 from their heritage fleet! Always had a soft spot for them!
Very different; lazier, softer, slower. Still nice, but much less sporty.
They have a red S2 Coupe with similar reg to the RS2 and it has covered just 400 miles!
@@volkswizard wow!
Excellent content as usual.
So, Doug Demuro has just bought one...
I also came here after watching his video
Beautiful and the "right" colour as well! I wish Audi would go back to making these radical and bonkers models and truly start innovating again rather than just doing the same copy and paste design ethos that all the Germans seem to be going with these days.
3294 miles?? Best one in the world!!
I’ve been watching a few RS2 videos back to back and found Doug Demuro doing a terrible impression of you in his I bought an RS2 vid. 🤣
Did he? That's brilliant
Saw my 1st and only one, coming back from Caffeine & Machine on the M40 last month. Being driven quickly by a middle aged woman!
At 4:20 you said you expected a slower steering from a rally inspired car, that's opposite of what a rally car is. They have quick steering to make quick maneuvers. Why did you expect anything different?
My Subaru - slow, lifeless steering
beautiful car
I believe in that 4-ring
great video JM. bravo
Thankyou
You already hit 40k, but well done and great video
Quality presented ☺ Subscribed !
Thankyou very much
Please find a Hughes of Beaconsfield Merc 300CE and do a review. What a car that is...There was one for sale here in Australia about 10 years go, don't know where it is now.
The last good audi.
315 bhp in this will keep up with most 500 bhp Audis nowadays.
So nice to hear of an audi with a nice gearbox and good steering.
Youre saying audi havent made a good car since 1995.? ......ok...
@@allosaurusfragilis7782
In my opinion yes... I've driven most S4 and Rs4 models and none have satisfied my needs for a great driving experience.
They all understeer at speed and the manual gear selectors are worse than a vauxhall astra.
I brought a quattro coupe years ago as it was one of my favourite cars but soon realised that they handle like a van.
Audi themselves say their cars are not made to go fast round corners but to blast out of them.
The only reason they were so popular in the group B days was because they were the only manufacturer using 4 wheel drive.
Once everyone else started making all wheel drives they soon disappeared from the rally scene.
I have always wanted to love audis but they just have no soul.
After this review is love to try an s2 as porsche might have been the right people to give it what they lack.
If you like motorway blasting and drag racing I'm sure Audis are great but a good b road blaster is what I want and they don't perform like a BMW M or most hot hatches.
It pains me to say it but I've had more fun in a subaru.
They are basically a German muscle car.
Such a low mile gem
Good review, good car!
My second car crush after the urquattro
Audis' just bore me to tears!
I must have this car now
S2 slightly hot??? 220 and/or 230bhp thirty years ago with a 6.2sec 0-60 time! Come oooonnnnn the S2 was a real down low sleeper!!!!
probably the most reliable Audi in the modern world. probably wouldn't buy anything later then 1994 in Audi.
I never even new this car existed until only last week when Doug Demuro saw one in London. It might have even been this one ?
Who else got the video in their recommendation after watching Doug's?
I hope, you and millions of others
Drive a d2 s8, it’s the most iconic audi to me!
That was the original plan but it was not available
JayEmm on Cars hope you can review one soon, because i think there’s a lot to be said about the s8 d2
A wealthy scoundrel seduced and betrayed me.
So Jay, you asked what else we'd like to see reviewed......well it's not a performance car but it's an Audi. The A2 , yes the 1.4 tdi. Unique little car, better than an A Class of same vintage (I've owned both - liked both but preferred the A2) and yet they killed it off. Some excuse about production costs...yea?! Once the template is there surely the more produced the better....but then they charged too much for it really, based on the Aluminium Spaceframe they said it commanded a premium. Anyhow, leave it with you and your good relationship with Audi UK ( The A8 also, but not the late ones, pre 2006)
