When I learned about this car I looked around for it a bit and the cheapest ones you could get were 15k in euro's which I thought was a bit too much for a second hand car. User stuff like this, unlike artwork or paintings, climbs on the value scale as long as there are enough living fans wealthy enough and enthusiastic enough to pay good money for it, before eventually they all die out or end up living on a pension and the car becomes worthless. I had one of those and several UR quattro's all of which I no longer have and regret. In the late 1980's and early 90's these were considered really fast, mainly because compared to the competition, the 4WD put it miles ahead. The 5 cylinder engine still sounds mean today. I never imagined how much they would appreciate.
I love the fact that a guy who loves cars started and perfected a RUclips channel that allows him to review cool cars and, in turn, buy cool cars. Thanks for the years of entertainment, Doug, and congrats on one of your dream cars.
I love how Porsche integrated their design elements such as in the bumpers, light bar etc. Truly amazing, unthinkable to have such a collaboration in today’s world, one of my dream cars as well
What Doug forgets to mention is that Porsche Holding SE who was actually major shareholder of VW/Audi back than (and still today) which was the driver here, roamer has it the RS2 was just another Ferdinand Piech brain storm, ...and the plan wasn't to make Porsche money, it was to keep Porsche employee simply employed till things would pickup again... in 1996 under Wiedeking, who was another brilliant Piech decision...
It's not just an old station wagon. I was a tech at a Porsche Audi dealer in '92 and I remember when the RS2 Avant came out. We were so disappointed that the US wasn't going to get them. But that's the way it was for decades with VW, we never got any of the cool stuff.
I had one as a kid growing up in Germany. It was a 92 s2 avant. My dad was into buying and selling cars so we had it for around a yr before selling it in 99. It was my favorite car to drive growing up, our neighbor who was also my dads business partner drove an S6 diesel (can’t remember what yr model). Awesome video.
Love the old 5 cylinders. I've owned a lot of them and every one of them I put massive miles on them before anything (aside from mods) needed to be done. Bulletproof. Pulled the head off one at 230,000 miles and cross hatching from the factory hone was still visible in all cylinders. And, if you've got the right tools, they are really very easy to work on. I can't imagine interior parts would be difficult to source, I had both a Coupe Quattro and an S2 Coupe which were rare birds here in the States but almost all interior bits cross over to others on the platform, and I found sourcing uncommon items from Europe fairly easy. Congrats, it's a fabulous car.
The people at the Audi dealerships were probably just desk workers who ultimately weren't huge car people. Maybe they have a database of all Audis they can work on? If the RS2 only JUST became importable, maybe it just wasn't in their database.
I saw the Hotwheels of this car in Walmart today, and I was like "where do I recognize that car" then it hit me! 5 minutes later I'm waking out of Walmart with '94 Audi Avant RS2 and some fireworks.
The part where you talked about this actual car being the first RS2 you ever saw blew my mind. I have so many memories in my head seeing cars for the first time and I can't imagine what it must be like when you can say you now actually own and drive THAT one. Epic.
Way more interesting. But the whole channel is becoming Hoovie's Garage except we only hear about purchases once and then maybe a year ownership report. I'd rather he buy broke ass cars tbh.
I saw that part and i said common Doug out load and i was in the store watching this and I said that and someone that works there heard me said that and he said my name is Doug so I ran away lol

Inb4 value crash to $500 because of all the fans of this car dying of old age. Why else do you think those 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s muscle car revival shows exist, where they buy car bodies from forgotten scrap yards for $200 and turn them into muscle car customs? It's the same fate that awaits this car too, given enough time.
User stuff like this, unlike artwork or paintings, climbs on the value scale as long as there are enough living fans wealthy enough and enthusiastic enough to pay good money for it, before eventually they all die out or end up living on a pension and the car becomes worthless. Hell, even Audi dealerships didn't know what it is at the time, that's a big red flag. You think kids these days give a damn about it? Because they are supposed to be the potential future buyers.
