Here's Why This Stunning B7 RS4 Is Still My Favourite Audi. Ever.

- For years I have known my buddy Darren, and lusted after his stunning RS4. In the time we have been friends, I have driven a huge number of cars and a lot of Audis - but this is still one of my favourites. Here's why.

Still a fantastic looking car. Really shows current RS products up for being far too overstyled. This was just right, much like the E46 M3. Restrained brilliance. They are all trying too hard these days styling wise.
Definitely agree. All of the germans used to take the wolf in sheeps clothing approach. Here's why they don't.
The big three Germans all brought out their hot versions and in some cases you'd have look twice to recognise it. A lot of people wanted, but can't afford to buy and/or run it. The manufacturers therefore brought out AMG Line, RS Line and M Sport Line for them to pretend in instead.
These were too similar to the spicy models so they just had to get more aggressive with them.
A bit lower, fat arches and tyres and one or two trinkets, and you're set.
@Chandler Lawson 😷
100% agree. The current ones are over styled with no class.

Yeah. Somebody's still reviewing B7 RS4 ❤
This car is a modern classic. Has aged so well
Colin and next gen has aged even better. Better balance and handling too.
Anthony Farnan the B8 doesn’t look special though. It’s also not available in a manual and not available in a saloon. Just a family wagon with a V8 under the bonnet. Nowhere near as special as the B7.
@@anthonyfarnan5935 The B8 was lacked the rawness of the b7 and yes it definitly aged well but it has the same design language as many of audis current cars which some may say is a good thing but to me is bad because that takes away from the presence and uniquness that it hass
omg just bought one in heaven omg love her so much my gal blacked out rims as well it's so gangster :-)

Owned a B7 RS4 and honestly one of the greatest engines I’ve driven. Revs and revs for days. 6th gear at 22mph and it’ll still push on. Miss mine so much! Always looking for another.
Nothing wrong with 90's dance music I'll have you know :))
I bet Jay listens to 90s dance music too
Loved my B7 RS4. Had it for 3 years without a single issue. Not even a dreaded shock/DRC failure! I have the B8 RS4 now (and a R8 V10+). I do miss the B7 for its manual gearbox and steering,
I get more of a wow factor when I see a b7 RS4 then an M3 plus the RS4 is a rare car
yea, only 20,000 of them were made.
absolutely bro only a handful in Canada 🇨🇦 😎 one in my driveway on summer only storage winter ! want her to last forever
@@HyrumManuel only 10000 dear

to be fair an m3 is closer to an s4 than an rs4 in terms of performance iirc
Rs4 is a great car! I have mine for 2 years and I love it.You can’t compare E92 M3 with RS4, B7 platform is small and the V8 engine is huge so the engine is as front as possible to have the AWD front diff . It also have drivetrain lose compared to M3 because of the AWD system .RS4 maintenance ain’t cheap because you need 9 liters of oil and you need to change oils every 5.000 km because it’s a high reving engine 8250rpm. Long life service is bullshit because this is a high performance engine . It needs carbon clean , DRC suspension line fail and lost the suspension oils and if a shock fails the oem ones are expensive af.
Drivetrain reliability is great I’ve launch my RS4 more than 30 times without a single problem. Engine is reliable but the only problems are sensors and oil leaks. I do the labor myself and it’s still not cheap. It’s not as fast for a V8 and it lacks from torque because it’s a high reving engine and has a torque limiter in first 3 gears and open the throttle body progressively not WOT! This can be solved with a remap which turn off the limiter.Hope this can help if you are a future RS4 owner!

@@redarmy1778 Thanks for the sub! I'll start making videos soon with RS4 and EVOS and much more.
The RS4 slays both E46 and E90 M3 as a street car. I have owned RS4 and E90 and it’s no comparison. Audi wins in:
-power band. RS4 actually has mid range torque. M3 has none.
-Gear box. RS4 is one of the best ever. M3 is notchy and really bad.
-Steering. No comparison. M3 steering is numb.
-Brakes. RS4 has Gallardo brakes. M3 brakes suck.
-Styling. RS4 is classy and muscular. M3 is boy racer with hood buldge, fake vents.
-Exhaust. RS4 sounds unreal. M3 sounds great if you really wind it out.
-Suspension, Audi RS4 delivers perfect ride/handling compromise. M3 ride too harsh on 19s.
well said...

i'm not impressed with carbon fiber interior bits. it feels and sounds just like hard plastic. i don't get it. give me polished stainless or aluminum or leather.
I'm with you. Never understood that.
Its ligth so gives off that racecar vibe etc
@@gergelyturcsanyi6743 thank you. i was beginning to think, not for the first time, that i was the only one.
Each to their own. I have a b5 s4 with real carbon with a blue strand through it from factory. Goes nice with the blue alcantera inserts in the seats. Never liked the v8 rs4 wing back seat bolsters are to high. And the v8 is to slow.
Or, best of all, wood.
Anyone who compares a B7 handling to an E92 clearly hasn’t been backwards on a roundabout!
lol deff rs4 stuck to road like glue rwd bmw merc sideways in rain by by rs4
I had my 07 RS4 for 8 years and loved every single one of the 60,000 miles I did in it. Epic car.
fuck ya bro rs4 for life brother smiling I side and out while driving her it's such a honor and pleasure to own one
I had mine for 15 years, nearly to the day. Still looked amazing on the day I sold it. The new owner was thrilled.
An absolute beauty. I fell in love with this car over 10 years ago and I'm still smitten.
Great review. Have owned both the E92 M3 and B7 RS4. RS4 I feel was more solid car and I had zero issues with it . The M3 more high maintenance for me.
Quite true, a high revving engine without any valvetrain issues, rod bearing issues, expensive 10W-60 oil, coil packs failing, throttle body actuators failing, etc. Ironic that Audi made a more reliable high revving engine than BMW M.
Absolutely. The rs4 feels so much more solid than BMW's of that same era.
My mate bought a black edition thingy one a few months ago, it's an 07 but only done 40k. It's stunning. It's totally standard too, not even silly air filters fitted 😂
He's keeping it that way
My Dad bought his 06 from new, has a number of classic cars ('69 E type FHC, Triumph Stag, Triumph TR4, Austin 3000) and would part with any of those before the RS4. Still get people coming up in the petrol station and outside pubs saying how much they love the thing.
In 2006 I had a b7 s4 and an e46 M3. I sold them both in hopes of getting an rs4. Never happened though and this video breaks my heart all over again
get one best decision of my life can't wait for summer omg
Here in the States, you can pick one up for around $35k, so that's really not a lot of money for a rare, very special Sports Sedan.
Must be low on omega 3, needs some walnuts
It has the most amazing engine/exhaust sound. I fell in love with these back in '07 when I heard my first one.
My mate had one of these in that colour, when they came out!
Its just an amazing car. Plenty of power and looks cool!
Those audis have aged like a fine wine! Absolutely love these and honestly can’t believe there 15 years old!! Makes me feel old tbh haha
M3 is like S class... Lots of stereotypes are shared by people that know nothing about cars thats why both those cars are overrated.
This was and still is the best option for raw german muscle. One of My favorite Audis aswell
I know I'm a year late but I'm doing walnut blasting on these V8s for £400 in Southampton.
Brought mine new in 2007 still got it, covered 50,000 miles now....
Sell it to me lol
rs4 for life bro we are a small group
Sold it now. Not sure it was correct thing to do but needed room for RS6.
Rs4 is good car, in fact very good. It just shows what a great cars vere made at those times just before global economic crisis. Of course, e92 m3 is king on the top! C63 is also notable beast.
Lexus ISF is also severely underrated. By the time it went out of production the ISF was the best of the bunch. Able to match the M3 around a track, but with by far the best build quality and reliability record. You can buy an old one with total confidence in its reliability. The same cannot be said of any of the others.
M3 would be better if it wouldhad quattro. But RS4 for me any day.
@@MD-uu5nt true ISF is not worse than M3 actually it have better engine. But web is full of vmw fanboys and for them even wors bmw is better than the best car in the world.
This is one of the few audi's they ever made that has both a true torsen quattro system, longitudinally mounted engine, and a manual gearbox! As far as I know it's only this and the R8 that have this setup.
If you look at modern audi's it's only the slow transverse haldex and FWD cars that have a manual option, as soon as they get a proper drivetrain it's auto only, sad.
U know your stuff bro gj!!! b7rs4 for life thats it :-) love my baby
Why on earth would you want to fit coilovers and make the ride worse? The DRC system is not cheap to fix, but it's far better than coilovers.
Love the B7 RS4, one of the best engine sounds and a huge amount of car for the money. Very nearly bought one a few years ago but sadly the running costs would have been to much..
What would the running costs be?
Why does everyone compare the engine HP to the Wheel HP with these cars. 414hp is what it has at the ENGINE, 380whp is at the WHEELS. The fact it only looses 34hp through the driveline is incredible, and would go to prove that the engine makes MORE then 420hp, easily.
The rolling road power figures I have for this car is corrected for drive train losses, so the brake horsepower mentioned is that of the engine :)
@@mercboiuk I would greatly argue that. I have watched over 2 dozen B7 Rs4 reviews in the last month alone, as I am looking at buying 1, and unless the heads are carbon blocked, they all run similar numbers, and not once has one person, at any stage in any video stated with proof that these figure as corrected for drive train loss, which being a mechanic myself, with over 20 years experience, is actually extremely hard to do due to a number of parameters ranging from altitude, air density, moisture saturation, tyre grip/slip, clutch grip/slip, mechanical faults, fuel quality, how well the vehicle is strapped down, just to name a few. Also, having owned a number of modified vehicles with sub 5-4.5 second 0-100kmph times 360whp to 400whp is pretty in the ball park and goes to show through my extensive experience that the engine hp numbers are higher. Typically, AWD system manual driveline loss is around 20%, but, even that varies up or down 5% due to the component weight and strain, and variations I labelled before. Going with 20% I feel the engine would be around the 450hp-460hp mark, which would infact be around the numbers it needs to achieve the claimed top speed of 175mph to offset the downforce resistance with its weight and drag numbers.
Dyno on fly wheel
I do agree with you 100%
Audi.. always.
never BMW or MB
These engines suffer powerloss caused by carbon build up. This is due to Direct Injection so inlet valves and ports fur up pretty bad. A carbon Clean wont do. Top end strip and clean or walnut blast is the only way to clean and restore the power.
That's why he told us in the video that the owner is looking to get it media blasted 👍
@@jamesf8864 agreed. "Media Blasting" is a relatively new term and so subsequently lead to my comment regarding carbon build up. I am confident that many DI/GDI owners are still blissfully unaware of this phenomena
I have an IS 250 that suffers the same thing. 115k miles there are no visible signs of issues however this design flaw is almost criminal
26 mpg? My B7 2.0T Quattro gets like 24. I can get 40+ but only on motorways going 60mph.
I really want to get this car one day. I just hope the government don't put stupid tax on them (or petrol) by the time i can afford to buy / run one.
17 mpg in town. 22 highway. Don't believe this video
You didn't really explain WHY you would take it over an M3. That's what I'm intrigued to know. I'd personally take an E92 but I still love this car for what it is.
Any real petrolhead who has some interest in track or aggresive driving will take bmw anytime. Mostly all audi lovers and die hard fans are amateur car enthusiasts. If someone starts with the question how fast your car goes from 0 to 60, so you know its the type 2. If you want to good cornering car what it really matters is rwd, weight of the car, suspension setup, brakes, weight distribution, alignment, tires and then only all other factors like engine power and etc, which in real world should not bower anyone with their first steps in the car world, because one will not be able to unleash full potentional of Audi rs4 or E92 m3 engine power. This rs4 is good road car, but it does not deliver in all other aspects to make it fast car in the corners like bmw does.
@@skrypka 👏👏👏 couldn't say it better mate bhp specs are for ten year olds
@@skrypka Very well said. And that goes to most modern performance cars nowadays (Golf R, Audi S3 etc, etc ) Very uninspiring, not really driver focused and easy to go fast with minimal driver effort. The E9X is one car I'll always look up to and love to take a spin in. People nowadays only really seem to just care about 0-60 times but forget everything else. My VXR being FWD doesn't have the best of 0-60 times compared to other vehicles out there today, but for the most part it's still way more engaging and fun to drive around the track and back roads. A proper petrolhead experience that is a key factor in vehicles that is dying out. Thank god we got the M2 Comp.
@@ARDEN440i Absolutely agree. It's a shame that there are very few new cars out there today with the potential to be great cars for proper drivers.
Both are amazing cars ,what's not too like V8 screamers M3 and RS4 both have so much to offer I'm a M3 fan especially E46,s , its the V8 sountrack ( intoxicating ) petrol head tunes !
26 miles per galon? Nah not possible. Thats the equivalent of 11km per litre.
I assure you it is (unfortunately) possible.
Indeed, during my ownership it has been entirely normal to see anywhere between 18 and 25 mpg per tank. This constantly features a mixture of traffic, motorway and country road driving.
@@mercboiuk 11km per litre is in my opion not doable. Even my 1.8t 20v audi did max 11.5 km per litre on average. A v8 cant do 11.5km per litre as an average. Even audi itself says the average is 7.5km per litre.
@@jaapfeitsma559: I am sorry to further disagree, but please rest assured, as the person filling the tank, I can confirm my quoted MPG figures are accurate.
It's a cost to pay for such a car, but boy-oh-boy it's worth paying for the fun :-D
I think we misunderstand each other haha. I also stated that the average is way less then the in the video acclaimed average of 26m per gallon/11 km per litre.
But for me it would be worth the money. Life is short, so buy and drive the car you love!
So your 18 miles per galon is right!
@@jaapfeitsma559: Ah yes, I see what you mean. My apologies, I did indeed misunderstand.
The 26mpg figure was achieved for my gentle journey to meet with Jayemm and then to the shoot location.
Usually, I can drive 280 miles per tank, which equates to approximately 20.5mpg, more in line with what Audi quote ;)
sealed for life is a laughable concept
Well, yes and no. Germans specify 100k miles as the lifetime of a car in their engineering. So when they say something is "sealed for life", it means "at least 100k miles without service/replacement". It is also reason why German cars in general get really expensive to keep after 100k miles, as you will need to start replacing (a lot of) parts.
I love this car... It was my favorite car in the original Test Drive Unlimited pc game from 2006... I absolutely adore it's looks especially in that gorgeous colour! Performance Audis should preferably be ordered in blue! I also adore the classic interior... Though I wouldn't wanna go through the hassle of owning one as they're quite expensive to maintain...
Great review, I can relate , how true , cut a long story short , I loved it so much , 3 cars after , I bought another one , every time you start , and every gear you take , makes you smile ,

To be perfect rs4 would be estate in black or grey. Blue was too common

The Clarkson tribe
I'm firmly in the E46 M3 camp. For me the M3 46 or 92 is the much superior car but I do love a b7 in red with some pipes
My love of Audi’s started with a B7 S4 Cabriolet

S4/RS4 is what I have always wanted, too many kids and too much mileage for work mean I can’t have one as a daily. Once a 3rd car is on the cards it will be one of these. Thanks for featuring this one (again). 👌 ps Can’t wait for the vid with the owner, I’ll be very interested in what the ownership experience has been like.
Its the best RS Audi, for the engine and styling… if you want to talk about supreme handling go to formula one. 2008 Rs4 is the original perfect RS.
A fantastic review of a truly fantastic car! These crazy rapid RS Audi's are the only sensible option for British roads. Road testers would always put the BMW ahead on feel, fun and track performance. But as you so rightly said, we don't live on a racetrack, we live and drive on roads that are the majority of the time either soaking wet or damp (good old British weather haha!) In a AWD beast like this you would still be making very rapid progress while the M3/4 or AMG would be sliding all over the place a long way behind in your rear view mirror!

Best audi ever. Newer models need to fix up
Love the B7 RS4. It still looks great today; good proportions with just enough to make it look different to a normal A4 without shouting too much. The seats are fabulous.
My uncle had one in grey and it was a lovely thing which made a great noise.
I like them but i loved the older 2.7 twin turbo version.
you can t deny that BMW steering feeling are much better in general than Audi s one, that said this RS4 has a much better engine sound then the straight 6 BM , but it s still only a sedan..i ll take an E92 M3 anytime just for the bonnet ! lol
If I can get my feet back on the ground this year, this is my next car 😂😏🏴. Need the wagon though. Absolutely love the rs4/6 avant range. Dont have the lifestyle for a s8 tbh. Never been a fan of bmw but mercedes really know what they are doing. I'll take 4wd over rwd for daily. Love the vids 🏴💙

Just parked our one owner example in the garage. I feel exactly as you do although after refreshing the suspension last year it doesn't need coil overs anymore. I love the fact no one except gear heads know what it is, the fact that is has a 6 speed and 400 odd Hp, and is a very engaging road car, who cares about its track performance. Love your reviews.

Perfectly timed video - I'm currently shopping for an E92 but also have saved classified searches/alerts for a B7...😬
Enjoy the hunt! 😎
I have a rare B7 Audi R4 that I just love. Yes they are a bargain. My neighbor is a factory BMW tech and he says never buy an M3. There are no aftermarket parts like the intake - 6 throttle bodies wth MAF’s will set you back 5k alone. He doesn’t own a BMW and probably would not buy one.
I had 2 S4s that were terrific cars. I drove them year round through the winter with winter tires on of course. I put over 200,000 km on both cars in 3 years, Again terrific cars. Cheers mate!
Excellent review as always. An Imola Yellow Avant has just cropped up in NZ which looks mint and owned by the same same family since new. It'll be the perfect compliment to my W212 M156 E63 AMG. Seriously tempted as a manual box is something I've missed since leaving Blighty.
I had a RS4 cabriolet and I miss it everyday
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the B7 RS4!! And I love your Audi videos!! Thank you very much for showing Audi some love!
audi is the best :-) esp b7 rs4 omg what a car
Bring on the engine sounds only video! 💪😎🤘
Love this car. As a BMW owner many times over, if I were to buy a V-8 German sports sedan, this would be high on the list. The sound is unparalleled. The greatest complaint would be the handling; this car is just too weighty and nose heavy. A few laps into a DE class on track and you're ready to pit to cool off the front parts, or trade it in on something more track happy (like any 3 series). Of course it chews through front dampers - and brake pads/rotors, which you did not mention - with all that weight up there. Seriously who puts a massive engine like that ahead of the front axles?! But this is still quite a special model. One can easily overlook its shortcomings.
Well the E92 had poor brakes they wouldn't last long on track the RS4 was good on the Nurburgring back in the day.
A tight track wouldn't be good though..M3 had flat seats poor interior didn't feel special. The M1 was probably better.I dare say the Quatro Sports engine was in the wrong place it won a few rallies.
I think that should read 1M:)
@@daveshaw2200 I have an e92 335is and done several track days. I have yet to fatigue the brakes, although I did buy performance pads just in case. However, I still do not like the brake pedal feel in the car. I am waiting for a set of M3 take offs to show up in the market, so I share your concern about e92 brakes even though I have not experienced it.
It’s because of the transaxle, it’s not possible to have the engine further back - despite what yr saying it’s still one of the best v8 performance cars imo and rare

Liked how you mentioned that the E46 is overrated which I think is due to the undeniable fact that 99.99% of the fanfare surrounding the car is by people who have never driven one so they are inherently taking the word or a very small few people who have or have just made the assumption that BMW+Now Legendary model=steering and vasically everything on and about car has to be perfect.
This is nothing against the E46, it's just the truth of the matter, just like how Ive never driven all the vehicles on my list of "dream cars".
I whole-heartedly agree James. For me it was an attainable dream car ever since they were introduced. About 2 years ago I owned a B7 RS4 for about 9 months. I got bit with a MASSIVE bill, at which time I needed to move on. But...I wouldn’t have had a different car during those 9 months, and a very large, robust part of me wants another.
get another man rs4 b7 ruuuuule love mine ro death
nice mine has 104000 miles drives like she is new mint interior mint exterior new clutch flywheel mich pilot sports new brakes rotors new walnut cleaning new guides chains :-) she's is rdy to drive ill only put 2000 3000 miles a summer! no winter car for me want her to last forever! next major update 9800 miles so 4-5 years :-) rs4 for life
I love the B7 RS4 great car
Agree that the e46 M3 is one of the most overrated cars ever.
b7 rs4 for life will never sell mine
I onwed b7 rs4 I will never compare it to e46 m3 my M roaster will eat rs4 back roads and canyons all day long
I have a B7 RS4 and love it to bits, after having a few similar ///M and AMG car I still feel the RS4 is my favourite.
deff bro good call !! b7 rs4 is just so special 😍 could of got almost anything but choose my murdered out all black baby it's such a joy to drive and such a special car esp here in canada maby 50 here it's a crowd pleaser that foe sure :-)
So sorry I can only add one "like" - I love Audis and feel that waaaay too often they are dealt a bad hand by the motoring press. It's gratifying to see someone who actually can appreciate the "real world" value of Audi's S4 formulation. (I own a 2017 S4 and it's magnificent!) JayEmm, you've moved to very near the top of my Christmas list ;-)
audis rule period fack everyone who disses them I've owned 2 2002 twin turbo stage 3 500 hp put it away for summer car then that winter got an 06 4.2 litre was sad put 2002 away lol 😆 loved them loooooots but b7 rs4 is a diff beast omg it simply the bomb
This is going to be my next car, I'm very fussy when it comes to my selection.
I recently sold my 1M Coupe, house forced the sale, but now I'm after my next motor..so far this RS4 is coming out tops.. Great review thanks 👍
Did U get an rs4 they rule
Love my B7 RS. They now have that V6 TFSI RS4 whatever the fuck that is I call it bullshit, only idoits would pick a dull ass V6 turbo over a screaming V8 with manual gearbox
I own one identical to this with 55k on it, I used to work for audi so with the help of a former colleague and many hours in a nice shed mine is now well up to scratch. It’s a phenomenal car, with a valved milltek exhaust it sounds amazing. There are cars out there for £10k but most have terrible history, stay well away as spending £10k putting a bad one right is easier than you’d think! Standard drc suspension can be unreliable but without sport plus suspension it’s got a really good ride comfort. These are iconic cars and I constantly get nice comments about it. Plus they are very nickable so beware of house burglary to steal the keys. Best car I’ve ever and probably will ever own.
well said bro deff the bomb car rs4 b7 for evvvvver can't wait for summer 🙌 rs4 will be alive again
Wish Audi did more RS models in saloon they look so much better!
Why dont audi recreate this beautiful beast ? Yes, I know, we have the avant, but im talking about the B7
It's the last mechanical quattro gearbox audi, crucially
A true great amongst cars, I have been hooked on various RS models ever since.
Sounds like Darren is someone I could be fiends with!
So weird people have different views of this car, Chris Harris says it doesn't pick up quick and you need to rev the hell out of it
Got a real soft spot for these RS4's. Sound incredible too!
they rule prriod
