Rain is my nemesis. When I was in my 20's and 30's I really didn't care too much about being in the rain. Then in my 40's and 50's I had a policy of not working in the rain. I would put my tools away and shut down the job, customers would say, "What are you doing?" I would say to them it's either take a day or two of rain delays or get sick and be out of work for ten days...also there was the problem of all my tools getting wet (carpentry and water don't mix well). Now that I'm retired, I don't even like to work in the shop when it rains outside. Great video Mike thumbs up.

You should take a few IBC bladders and cut some 12" deep containers to set under the sawdust discharge on the saw mill to catch all the saw dust. They'd be easy to slide around on the gravel since they're plastic. When full, fork them with the tractor or skidsteer and carry over to the burn pit to empty. It would make cleanup easier and save your gravel.

Mike re the video on your building conundrum. Taking a step back, you already have a perfectly good building to become your Timber or Logging Building - you currently use it as a huge (and expensive) gazebo - the Pavilion. Why not build some smaller buildings ( eg, larger sized log store shape) with all your onsite sawn lumber, to house all the plant and machinery to keep them from the elements, and then add a concrete bases and gutters (as you were going to do anyway) to the Pavilion and then put sides and the 2 x16’ roller doors you talked about on it too. That way you have your Timber/Logging Building on site, near the house and it will cost a lot less to run power from the Building to the Pavilion than it would to run the same power out to the Clearing.
You could also use the lower space where the burn pit is to put those equipment buildings/shelter and possibly consider moving the log stores down there too, and that will then give you a perfectly positioned Timber/Logging building that can take the kiln etc and give you all the space you around it for access - you might need to move the split firewood bunker somewhat to get the 360 degree space around it for trucks etc).
I also recall that the left side of the Building (the garage side) was going to be for plant and machinery, but I guess that’s now been hijacked by Melisa for her gym stuff etc. If that stuff could go elsewhere, you’ve also got that space back for what it was intended for.
Another radical idea is build a new and larger house in the Clearing and then use the current house for the something else - that doesn’t solve the power issue, but if you were going to put a building in the Clearing, a house might be the best type of building to put there - it could be an absolute fabulous place for a house with great space for a garden and some meadow space too.
Anyway, just some idle thoughts from sunny Scotland.

Hello Mike. I really appreciate your experience and wisdom with regard to equipment....especially since you do many of the same things on your property that we do. So I want to get your opinion about which piece of equipment I should get next. We live on a 6 acre homestead in the Ozarks of Arkansas and hope to purchase an additional 11 acres that adjoins our property. I already have a 50 hp 4x4 utility size John Deere 5103 tractor with FEL, bucket, forks and grapple attachments. I have a Norwood HD36 Lumber Pro sawmill (all manual) that can cut up to 20 ft length lumber. My son has a firewood business, which is mostly supplied with logs by a local tree service. He is planning on purchasing an Eastonmade 22-28 splitter and possibly a 24 ft conveyor (Wolf Ridge). We already have a 16 ft dump trailer with 2 ft sidewalls. We are trying to decide whether to purchase a skid loader (probably around 75 hp and 9,000 lbs), or a mini excavator (probably around 50 to 60 hp). What would you recommend? Feel free to comment about any equipment I currently have as well. Thank you and keep up the good work!

back to your other video where you spoke about the mill operation and set up. It seems to me the better place for the mill set up and kiln would be the wood yard. then just do the wood yard in the woods opening. then you could just run a small , say 100 amp line out to a small building in the woods. then you could use the building all ready built for wood drying and just build a roof building over the mill . something similar to what we have. easy to clean around and load logs.. I would just keep the cost down till you see where the lumber sales go. you will be surpriced how many people around you have mills. it's a tough market.

Hi Mike, another enjoyable video. Re stickers......would you be able to cut some out of your first and second cut as to turn a log on the mill, rather than burning them? Also, check out Nathan's (Out of the Woods), lastest video with him emptying his kiln, then refilling it. He builds a special pallet that he stacks is lubber on to air dry to start with, then put in the kiln. His pallets are the usual length of the lubber he cuts. He screws slats 2"-3" slats to 2" x 3" or 4" bearers spaced at the distance to normally place his/your stickers. Then, he nails stickers on top of the slats in line with the bears underneath, then, stacks his boards or slabs as normal on the pallet. This system allows air to easierly circulate around ALL the boards/slabs on the pallet and he is able to use his yellow or red machine depending on the weight of the stack, without the need to unstack the stack to move it to the kiln, then restack in the kiln and of course do the revise to get the dried boards/slabs out of the kiln and stored out the weather.
Yes, it is a bit of work getting yourself set up with the number of pallets you'll need but it'll save a lot of double handling in the long run, especially when you get your sawmill and dry storage shed you intend to build. Plus, you have more than enough logs on the property, including the ones out in the woods, to use for the pallets. Good luck.

In Alberta, wood for sale in the provincial parks has to be of majority coniferous. Trees that take 80 or so years to grow back to marketable size. On the other hand, white poplar which is one of the only two natural hardwoods we have is not accepted. They will grow back into firewood size in 30 or so years and will self-sprout from the root system. No need for reforesting. The reason given by the government is it doesn't snap crackle and pop.

I ❤ to have a mixed pine & hardwood trees in my property. We'll see. I can make better quality lumber myself. The noise: A gun's hammer. Mike's coldness: I hoped your not get " soft?" Especially. Being at the West Virginia's house. I believe. It's cooler there. We did have a 20 to 30 degrees drop in temperatures. Last Friday's wind was 37 degrees windchill in southwestern Vermont. Thanks Mike. Have a good holiday weekend. Say Hi to Melissa, Eva, & Hunter. 😍😊😉👍❤️💜🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I use to do concrete work and we did a bunch at a lumber yard here in West Virginia where they didn't saw the wood bc it was hauled to them and they went through and sorted it and stickered it bc they had really big dryers then they would sort it and grade it but the stickers they used was the just like you cut but they had like little raised spots on them and they said that way you didn't have that width of the sticker that took longer to dry through it would be just a little spot the wood was laying on.

Cooking and firing an empty firearm. No way should you buy stickers. Especially since the condition of the store bought isn't good quality. Time and effort is what you specialize in. You've got the wood and equipment. That feeling you get when you have what you need and it doesn't have to be purchased, has just got to be worth the time and effort. Yeah, they have to dry. You should have cut more weeks ago. Isn't it great that you're retired, yet you don't have enough time to get done all you want to do!! That's the good life!! Happy life!! Awesome RUclips content!! Thank you for sharing!!👍🚜❤️🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸

🟠 Mike, what do you do w/ all that Sawdust? Can you make firestarter with it? maybe mix it with some sort of safe accelerant (wax, etc..) that solidifies it and make blocks or something of the sort.

The weather has been brisk to say the least in NW PA this past week. I concur, it's the wind that makes it difficult to get anything done outside. Looks like wet weather for the beginning of April.

Happy Easter to you and your family! I think you should make Wood Shed kits, pre cut wood for your area since you did a great job on building yours 😊. I’m starting mine in the fall, I’m a 66 year old widow and have to do things myself know, but I always liked building things from wood, the only thing I can’t do will the roof as I’m handicapped, but I have to keep moving. Thank you for your videos 😊

It’s the wind. I was outside for two hours replacing the lights on my garage above the overhead doors, I could not feel my fingertips the whole rest of the day. And I was wearing gloves too.
