  • Interview with Abraham J. Baum
    San Diego, CA
    January 6, 2001
    Interviewer: Steven Karras
    Photography: David Hallinger
Abraham J Baum (1921-2013) commanded the famed "Task force Baum," sent by General George Patton to liberate the POWs at Stalag Oflag XIII-B, near Hammelburg. Baum was part of the 4th Armored Division unit that liberated the Ohrdruf Concentration Camp. Awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy in Germany. After the war, Baum remained inexorably connected to his military family by working with veterans' organizations wherever he lived. He founded the Rancho Bernardo Veteran's Memorial, and was instrumental in starting a program that sent veterans from all military conflicts to middle and high schools to share their wartime experiences with the students. Baum provided counsel to Moshe Dayan, Teddy Kollek, and Haganah leadership in preparation for Israel's war of independence in 1948.

So great you got him to sit for this interview! Priceless. I saw a website where German reenactors drove him over the Raid route in a WW2 jeep!

Thank you. I wish I hadn't kept the tape in a drawer for a couple of decades. Fortunately Abe was accessible to others, especially historians in his post war years.

Read the book “48 hours to Hammelburg”. I saw the name Abe Baum and I instantly thought of the book. I drove to Hammelburg but couldn’t recognized much accept the German Kaserne, of course I wouldn’t been allowed to enter.

Great interview. Its interesting that there was a movement towards doing these type of videos 20 years ago but only now have video sites like RUclips makes them widely accessible. This is, I think, a highly historic interview despite all of the other books and interviews that were done because this one is easily discoverable and very interesting.

Thanks Donald. Most of these interviews were collected for a documentary I made. Needed to wait for a RUclips for these interviews to see the light of day
