The all Japanese American 100th Infantry Battalion from Hawaii was also attached to the 34th Infantry Division.
    Truly as FDR said
“Americanism is not, and never was, a matter of race or ancestry.” My father who was of Chinese descent and from Flatbush Brooklyn also served in the Po Valley. Great people all. Thank you for preserving their memories!

My father was in the 3rd Infantry Division, North Africa to Berchtesgaden. He told me about the 34th Red Bull Division. He had tremendous respect for the 34th. The Divisions that fought early in the war deserve a LOT of credit. What a wonderful interview with a tremendous soldier and human being. Thank you for preserving this man’s story!

I appreciate your words. Glad you watched this. Did your dad talk about Gen Truscott ?

    • @geoffthornton9004

Yes sir! My father, who was a combat medic, loved General Truscott. One time on Sicily, dad stopped to bandage a civilian’s leg, knowing that he would have to run to catch back up to his men. He was hurrying with the wound and looked up into the smiling face of General Truscott who was back down the trail. The General complimented him for caring about the civilian and told him to take his time, his company had fallen out to rest just around the bend. Those men learned the Truscott trot! 120 steps per minute, 4 miles per hour for 20 miles. Amazing what Truscott built the 3rd Infantry Division into. Later on the commanding General was Iron Mike O’Daniel. Dad adored him even more than Truscott because he was around Iron Mike more. Even patched up his shoulder once when an 88 hit the building they were standing by and a brick came down on the Generals shoulder.

Wow, what a story. I served in the Navy in the 80’s. No shortage of anti Semites in the military. However, there were a lot of good and decent people as well. The haters were outnumbered by the decent folks. We had a Jewish chief engineer who was very tough. He was only 5’5” , but he boxed at Annapolis. Nobody messed with this guy.

This man is extremely articulate and knowledgeable. Sadly, the questions were disjointed and off-point for much of the time, but Haas's responses are mesmerizing. But who is running the camera? It seems to have a mind of its own!

How long ago was this interview done? The caption say’s One day ago. Its now January 2024 and He looks to be in His 60’s or early 70’s at most . One of My Uncles , Lois August Ardito also served in the 34th Division as a Machine Gunner . He enlisted after graduation from Tamalpais High School in 1942 and Rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant in D Company 133rd Infantry Regiment. He joined them before going into action on the Italian mainland. Except for a couple of times being hospitalized for wounds He fought in all engagements in Italy to the end of the War. He was awarded a Bronze Star with V for Valor because He exposed himself in order to lay fire on a German Assault gun in order to draw its fire and attention away from Men who were pinned down in a exposed position that made them vulnerable to it’s fire . His action allowed them to escape. He said any of the other guys would have done the same for Him and that Fighting in WW2 was the most important thing He did in His life. I cannot get enough of these interviews. They are addicting. I wish I had interviewed My Uncles or secretly recorded their stories. They would have felt put on the spot I think if they were on Camera and not been as candid as when in familiar company. I grew up around and worked with a lot of Veteran’s and Combat Veteran’s . This interview is very well done. Thanks for facilitating their telling of their experiences and lives. When He talks about the Jewish women thinking He was not healthy unless fat that was also My experience growing up in a family of Italian and Portuguese ancestry. Other Uncles also were in combat But Louie told Me He wanted to join early because He thought the War would be over before He could get there. In My DNA there is also Jewish and Sub Saharan African. I never experienced any anti Jewish sentiments nor was raised to have prejudice against anyone. My Italian relatives alway’s spoke of Jews as being “ Good with the Money” or tight with the money. They would often have fun with those of us who are frugal, if someone spent too much on something they would say in Italian “ even the Jew ( name ) finished His money or a finito anche a la moneta que qual Judea ( name ) or something like that. At least in their dialect. The older ones were fluent in the Italian of their parents Dialect . My Grandfather was a decorated Italian Veteran of Adwa in 1896. If there was any ill talk about anyone it was more because of their bad ways than any racial prejudice. Japanese were referred to as Jap’s but not hated . I worked in a Chinese Market for Chinese People who were Friends of everyone in town and respected by all. I learned a lot working for The Fong’s . See also Ernie Magri . He is one of My Uncles too. I also have a Jewish Brother in Law and a good friend and fellow gun enthusiast and collector who also collects and restores WW2 Machine Gun’s of all kinds is a Orthodox Jew. Ernie Magri was in the 14th Armored and saw the concentration camps. They have passed on but their stories and Memories live on , thank You again for preserving this history and their stories. Also the song Goodbye Maria I’m Off To Korea comes to mind.
