The thing about stamina. Even if the unit runs out, they can still fight enemy units that approach them. They just can’t move or do assists. It’s only when they rest to restore stamina that they become defenseless.
Josef is basically this game’s version of Fire emblem’s Jagen archetype. A high leveled unit given to you at the start of the game that can carry you through early missions but eventually falls off at around mid-game when the rest of your army, as well as the enemy’s, gets stronger. However, with the way battles work with having units consist of multiple characters fighting together, Josef can still be quite useful with him guarding and healing allies even if he’s no longer able to easily wipe out enemy combatants.
The fact that after playing and beating on Tactical the first thing I did was go in to another playthrough on True Zenoiran mode says a lot. Such a hard difficulty mode forced me to learn all the little tricks in the mechanics I didn't catch onto on my first playthrough. Protip: take advantage of every garrison on your current map for passive healing, fast travel during battles by withdrawing in one garrison and deploying in another closer location, don't be afraid to leave a 0 stamina unit at a choke point to hold the line, and use your valor skills liberally.
If the stamina hits zero, your squad can still fight back. They just won't be able to move or initiate combat... as long as they keep winning the encounters
I am blown away by how much I am enjoying this game. Even though I am not a huge fan of the story, characters, dialogue or the art style in general, the game itself is so good it makes up for the areas it doesn't shine in. Then add on it's paying homage to a style of strategy RPG that was practically forgotten, bringing back the Ogre Battle style for a new gen, I can't help but absolutely love this game.
Great analysis, but it's always fun to hear people talk about nobility being associated with compassion and selflessness when people who remember their history know that nobility was the antithesis of compassionate and selfless... that's how the became and remained nobility. Alain being as compassionate and selfless as he is is rightfully pointed out as being unexpected by the people you can help throughout the campaign, and we really have to give it to Josef for raising a man who was promised the world to not be an entitled little shit.
On of the best games of the decade, along with BG3, 13 sentinels, and Blasphemous imho. (I also enjoy discussing maxing out my pp for childish reasons)
I just wish we had open ended content after finishing the story, or at least new game+ where you get to keep all your gear in your next run, or stores refreshing their stock. It breaks the immersion seeing shop owners having nothing to sell you since you already bought everything because you are so rich in the end. Tip for any playthrough: do NOT skip the mining mini game. In the end, it gives you overpowered gear and accessories. BTW, if anyone wants a REAL challenge, get the bad ending in True Zenoiran Difficulty. I wish you luck.
For the first one, 13 sentinels! The story there is incredible and my favorite out of any game out there Favorite strategy rpg? Either Triangle Strategy, of maybe Unicorn Overlord. Haven't beaten UO yet
13 sentinels was so unique, but the combat wasn’t deep enough to compete with Unicorn Overlord (though they are comparable and ‘strategy’ based. I enjoyed odinsphere and dragons crown and even princess crown. I never played the ps2 tower defense one (grim grimoire I believe) but Unicorn Overlord and 13 sentinels tie for me
Problem is it's not on PC. I have a deck but not really a fan of piracy. I have a 3 year old switch and it feels weird buying a game now and booting it up after not using it for a year (after Zelda).
I wish it had a better story. I play RPGs for the story, and this one had a Groundhog Day problem. Go to area, fight, clear evil, level up shop, repeat. I do hope they make a sequel, or a substantial expansion, and improve that aspect. Everything else was perfect game for me
I think the biggest issue for me was a lack of variety. I 100%ed the game on Expert and it felt very repetitive when 99% of the maps are just rout the enemy maps. Granted, some maps have gimmicks, but most you can kinda just do the same thing, which made it feel kinda boring to me. I think we have 1 whole map where we defend in Drakenhold? And 1 where we escape early on? If we had more of those, it would have been so much more fun to actually go through the maps, especially since there are so many mini rout maps with the towns scattered throughout fevrith making rout maps even more repetitive than it should feel.
Seriously, this game is basically a playable version of FF12 without that whiny blonde kid saying something something airships in front of an airship captain calling himself the protagonist.
I love the game except a few minor things and one major thing, the minor being that the unlock slots and promotions take alot of honor a bit too much imo, and the unit variety u get through characters there are a few classes that come way too late or too few and if you recruit mercs that eats up more honor. The major thing that ahs become a bigger issue when reaching the northern region specifically is the major difficulty spike is really shown here. You can see what the outcome of the battle will be before your two units reach but that rerolls every time another fight happens so soemtimes ive gone from killing half the enemy and taking 0 damage, to another fight happens this outcome rerolls and now my unit is almost getting wiped out and can be extremely infuriating, so the bastorias region and onward every single time a fight happens i have to go around and recheck every other potential fight since it can swing so drastically
I dont think I was ever as bored with a combat system as I was with this game, got me out of it completly. Theres barely any input, and selection units or moving them around isnt really gameplay, thats like saying that selecting your perks, skills or armor set in another game is. I think that a combat like Heroes of Might and Magic wouls have fited this game much better because currently theres really no point in watching the combat play out, hell thats why they even let you skip it. The game is clearly made with a lo of love and I wish it all the best but it is clearly being overhyped, before buying the game please try the demo and see if its for you.
how can this be Game of The Year when there no Unicorn lording over pepople its like buying a game called football game and when you boot the game your a guy in a turn base game with a sword
In my defense, I said it was game of the year WORTHY, not that it was definitely going to win, especially with how great other releases have been so far.
As much as I like this game, still prefer Symphony of War, and can't wait for SOW2 wich promise to be freaking awesome. But yes, Unicorn Overlord is really solid, notably in graphics, the gameplay is pretty nice but the story and character are quite... cliche. Specially in the beginning, made me grind my teeth, it was hard to tolerate. It was the biggest cliche of anime beginning that you can think of. Other than that the first hours, the rest is better. But there is some nice character and some nice surprises too, so yes, it might get better, but I don't think it is GOTY worth. Doesn't it isn't a great game. And even Helldivers 2 don't seem to be GOTY Imho... Well, not yet, at least.
The thing about stamina. Even if the unit runs out, they can still fight enemy units that approach them. They just can’t move or do assists. It’s only when they rest to restore stamina that they become defenseless.
Thank you for correcting me! I'm a bit embarrassed for getting that wrong so i appreaciate it.
you know how ik this game is great? Even after finishing it i jumped right back in to do it all again. First time in years since ive done that.
I have my doubt this would become GOTY given the current preference of the game industry. That said, I’ve personally put 170 hours into it. I love it.
I agree with you, except for your doubt... To me, already GOTY ! It will be difficult for any other game to compete against.
How do you feel one month later?

He is exactly that analogue

While the shops not restocking didn't bother me personally, you make a good and fair point.
The best, so far for me. Hands down !
And salute to my Berenice love !
Unicorn Overlord is my personal game of the year.
Question of the Video: Whats your favorite game from Vanillaware? alternatively, what's your favorite Strategy Rpg?
For the first one, 13 sentinels! The story there is incredible and my favorite out of any game out there
Favorite strategy rpg? Either Triangle Strategy, of maybe Unicorn Overlord. Haven't beaten UO yet
@@mattbattmatt This is the only answer. One of the best written games of all time.
@@Amocoru Beat it a few weeks ago, and I'm still not over it. Such a treat. Hope we get another game from Vanillaware with a similarly great story
Unicorn Overlord and Unicorn Overlord 😉

Obre Battle* 2.0. Really nice.
Just got around to it...after 50 hours....just wow

people will think the ring of the maiden is just for women, but josefs ring of the maiden convo is so good,
Subbed 3rd video in, great content.
They deserve my money but Nintendo doesn't.
Just give me a PC port already and I'll buy it day1.

So it's like Ogre Battle?
Ya know, I've not actually heard of ogre battle before, but after looking into it, yeah, that's not a bad comparison at all.
Why not on pc?
Now that is the question, and quite the dumb decision in this day and age...
Vanillaware just don't make PC games sadly.
Nice review. Just a small fyi it's pronounced ruh-por
*Laughs in Helldivers 2*

Story and characters are far too weak to be considered GOTY but an excellent experience? Absolutely.
Speaking as someone who doesn't mind the weaker story at all, i think that's fair.
@@Berdomlikesgames Yeah, I don't mind it either. Game is still amazing.
