Hyundai Kona Hybrid in-depth review - better than a PHEV?

Hybrids are a bit of a rarity today. No, we don't mean plug-in hybrids (or PHEVs), we’re talking about hybrids that do the electric bit for you. There’s the Toyota Prius, the Toyota CH-R and now this, the Hyundai Kona Hybrid. Unlike a Kona Electric, which lets you drive on battery power all the time, the Hybrid lets you run on electric energy alone at low speeds, before the combustion engine kicks in when you put your foot down.
It sounds like a neat, if a little old-school, hybrid system, but has Hyundai wrapped it up in decent package? Cam puts it to the test to find out.

The Kona is an amazing car in its class. I really felt like you were really letting your own opinions about it guide the way this review went and I honestly feel like you did it so much injustice. I bought this exact model and I couldn’t be any happier with my purchase. The things you mention about the engine while switching to and from electric are non existent when I drive. It’s barely noticeable and I honestly don’t notice unless I literally floor it. Also, you keep comparing this to luxury cars which is a horrible comparison. It’s not a luxury car so of course it’s going to look bad when that’s what you’re constantly comparing it to. Compare it to the Toyota chr or Honda CR-V or even the Mazda’s compact suv. This car has won awards over those cars. It wouldn’t compared to a bmw x2 obviously. I’m sure you see my point by now.
For people with a small budget but still want a fun, eco conscious car with cool styling, this is the car for them. It just feels like your review for this car wasn’t towards the target audience for the car.

God yeah, it could be an Aston Martin but would sit there scratching it like a leper
i think it's a really good looking car. and some of the negative points you make i couldn't care less about. e.g. scratchy plastics and noisy engine. my son is into really dodgy extreme metal, nothing goes over that noise let me tell you. nothing. thanks for the review and others' comments, i'm going to be getting an automatic one on Motability, and from seeing this, i'm very glad about it. the boot will fit my hoist and wheelchair, for that i am very happy.

I own a Kia Niro, which is the equivalent. It is an absolutely lovely car to drive, and the interior is sooo much nicer. It has the same engine set up, but I find it very refined. Perhaps the sound proofing is better?

1 other point the guy who designed it did also did the Lamborghini Murcielago. I just bought 1 last week get it in 3mths and can't wait I'm going full automatic with this tho far better so iv been told. plus iv always had manual so be nice change. Good video but I love look of it feel and can't wait to get it.
I think it’s pretty, but the interior in the back seats is too small and there are too many hard plastics. However, it has a lot of extras and drives nicely. The sound system in the top model is very good, imo.

Test drove my hybrid premium start of august and not coming till just before xmas and loved it hate it when they try to compare to more expensive cars 98% of people wont be racing this like a F1 car it'll be used for every day stuff n the odd day away
Funny seeing blue Dutch reg car all the time on outside and then you on inside on UK carriageway-budget restrictions I guess !
Does anyone else find it really noisy to drive? As in, the sound of the road was really loud. I test drove a Kia Nero before the Kona and it was almost the same car except a bit more spacious and far less noisy.
Hmmm. I've heard completely different opinions regarding the steering. Precise is the term others have used.

The critic is just a boy, he probably drives some high powered German vehicle. The Kona is superb and as for his remarks on the plastic is all down to Hyundai keeping the costs down, this is why Hyundai are now a big player in the Car Market, they've come a long way since 1981, and lets not forget they were the first car company to give a 5 year warranty and this speaks volume how confident they are with their product.
Complaining about only two of the grills being functional. Forgetting the two at the sides are for airflow down the side of the car making a small curtain. So only one non functioning grill

That's official b-roll footage from Hyundai, and it just so happens to have been filmed in the Netherlands. We've also got b-roll from a Kia drive in the south of France and footage from a BMW drive in Germany.

Very nit-picky review
I did not see AC vents to the rear seats. I refuse to spend $40K for a car and not get a twenty dollar piece of equipment to the rear seats. Definitely nec in Florida....
