Just installed it on my 2 x X-H2, and what an improvement! Like night and day for me. Very confident and accurate compared to earlier versions. The DJI box has very little relief and is quite flat contrast-wise.
I think it could be hitting the minimum focus distance. The AF is miles better than before and super sticky to the eye and I don’t see a lot of pulsing at all. A lot of tests use unrealistic scenarios too. We have to also see more tests but I like what I’m seeing so far. 🙏
I feel like I undersold it while I was testing everything else but it's not only better, but better than the Canon cameras and quite literally on par with the Sony Z-V1 while doing something as ridiculous as rocking back and forth.
Loved seeing this. Good start. Probably not the best but a good start in the right direction. I know there might be someone out there who will change all the settings on speed of focus and locking etc etc. But thank you for getting this out quickly for us who are on the fence on upgrading and staying with Fuji. Earned a sub and I look forward to more of your test and videos! Thank you! :D
Did you see Casey's recent video where he changed the tracking sensitivity to 3 and left the AF speed on 0. He was getting very good results even before this firmware update.
I’m waiting till after my Botswana Safari vacation before updating the firmware on my X-H2s. I use mine for wildlife photography and happy with AF currently. The real test of AF is in your own normal use case. Test environments are fine but misleading. Also there is lots of customisation in the menu about AF- how sticky, how fast, handling of obstacles. Many people would see big improvements by customising the AF to their use case.
Casey from Camera Conspiracies just uploaded an autofocus update without firmware change and it's solid. Check it out, pretty sure he used 0 speed and 3 for locking on ?
Thanks for being the first to make a video...(that I could find.) I thought it was holding onto your face focus until enough of your face or at least your eyes were out of the image. But some other examples showed you covering your face and it still didn't focus, (@13:20). I am interested in how it does with photos.
Ok folks, I screenshotted a few questions and will do a follow up video over my lunch break today. Ask any specifics you have below this comment and I'll address as many as I can during the outdoor test.
One tip would be to change the sensitivity to number two or three. If you have it too high it jerks. I have found this with all Fuji film cameras that the best setting in the speed sensitivity setting is number two or three. It's definitely an improvement. I don't only SH2 I own the XT5 and I own a GFX so I'm looking forward to those cameras being updated as well but my GFX. 100s II actually, focus is really well and I'm nervous about doing any firmware update for that camera
I have the older GFX, so no new test unfortunately. I will say that overall the firmware update is good and I think we just tend to focus too much on the shortcomings like I did here because those are pretty specific tests vs how you'd actually use the camera IMO. I think autofocus tests in general need to be rethought.
But how does it work for stills, eyetracking and Continuous Focus? I got the Problem that the green Box wasn’t reliable and the Focus doesn’t hit the eye, although the green box was set on the eye
Someone brought that issue up if it was in anything other than AF-S. I almost always shoot AF-S so I never came across it and I tried a few test shots on random object and they were fine, so based on how I understood the issue from him, this firmware resolves it.
I forgot the numbers but it's the least sticky setting (notch all the way left) for tracking sensitivity and AF speed was one notch before the max. Camera isn't next to me now but I'll try to remember to come back with the numbers when it is.
There are some unknowns about your test, as a viewer. Like when you held up your sigma lens cap we don't know if you went inside the minimum focus distance for the lens so that test is invalidated but overall looks like it is working as a $2200 camera should. No one should expected Canon or Sony level AF for 1/2 or 1/3 the price and also seen some tests with old Fuji lens and the reviewers completely glaze over the fact that those older photography lens were not made with video in mind and don't have the necessary focus motors to achieve Canon/Sony level of autofocus, ever. They just won't.
the 18mm test looks pretty good, to be fair, my sony a74 also struggled to focus on solid colored items with nothing on them or overexposed objects (better performance then the x-h2s tho), especially considering its a black cap with black text in front of a dominant (space wise) black t-shirt, so I get the struggle. Sometimes having a wider zone box will help (as long as the box is bigger then the subject). Also for me 7.0 is the firmware that gave me most issues, since my most used lens (23mm 1.4 wr native fuji) don't care what setting I set it at, and jumps around like crazy, while both my sigma 16 and 56 started to work better LOL, I am looking forward to updating to 7.1 for sure.
I feel like the subject tracking is tons better. It wasn't bad at all prior and I genuinely had no issues with firmware 7.00, but doing some of these ridiculous impractical tests shortly before midnight when the firmware dropped had me question everything 😂
I raised a specific issue with Fuji back in July where the camera (xt5 and xh2s) would show the green box on the subject but not actually focus the lens. You had to disable shutter AFC or AFS, basically setup back button focusing, but then you were able to select subject detection, point it at the subject and half press the shutter and it would give you a green box without actually focusing provided the subject wasn’t completely blurry. You were even able to select focus priority and take the picture this way without actually focusing. To me it showed there was a clear disconnect between the focusing system and what the lens was doing. Would be great if someone could test this on the new firmware? I just have an XT5 at the moment so still waiting on an update!
I used this somewhat regularly recently with no issues but since I'm planning out going outdoors for a follow up in a few hours, I'll test that out too on some geese
@ it was something I was able to recreate on both cameras and Fuji confirmed they could recreate the issue too and would fix it in the next update so I assume it will be fixed. If it’s not then it still points to a disconnect between the subject detection and the lens actually focusing.
@@DFitzell Must be fixed then because I was trying it out about an hour ago and it was fine. I actually vaguely recall hearing this from someone else now that you mention it so it looks like you're good to go. I almost always shoot photos with single point and back button focus because I'm almost always telephoto so I never noticed it and my portrait video from over a year ago had a firmware that didn't have this issue. I swear these guys worry the hell out of me sometimes.
Using the plain black color lens cap or any plain color will not help as there is no contrast to focus. There should be at least a bit of pattern or contrast to test.
Hey Dude only half way in here. Thanks for doing this. I think Fuji relying on contrast is defs a problem when holding up black objects v good lighting but also very curious to know if you are working outside the min focus distance. Glad you mentioned it when you did as its all I could think about. near and far face auto detect was great but I think CF settings could be a factor e.g speed and tracking but also that min distance. Using the vlogging example is valid but maybe not the best example as that is really a niche market. That being said not uncommon in a travel video etc for people to want to move from fact to object or products. Cant wait to see more examples of this as this is meant to be a flagship camera, S means speed and Fuji really only had once chance to nail this. Thanks again for the quick video dude
Its just the difference of a slow old loaded cp vs modern new installed computer. The real reason are the difference between Software IC (Fuji) vs Hardwired IC (Sony)
Both camps have whiners, Sony users whines over no firmware upgrades, Fuji users over slow AF. You cant have both, Fuji are a software costumizable camera. Just enjoy what you have.

I did and I dunno man, it didn't change too much. That being said, I'm going to use it as I always have before over the next few weeks and I'll do an update if there's an issue.
This is such a great camera with a MASSIVE deal killer. Really, really sad. Fuji could've had a massive hit with this, instead they've made themselves into a joke and killed their credibility. At this point, it's obvious they are unable to fix the massive AF-C problems on this hardware. They need to release the next gen of these cameras with enough processing to do real AF, and they need to do it ASAP.
So I digress. In actual real life scenerios, I've never had a problem with it. I'm going to put it through its paces in real world scenerios later today and upload a follow up video.
Yeah. It's why I got rid of my X-H2S. I loved it but just couldn't get over the AF issues. I really wanted to stay with Fujifilm, but it just became too frustrating. Maybe I'll come back again, but not until they truly get AF fixed.
On the XS-20 the Face and Object detect works like a charm, the Eye detect on the other hand NOT! it hits the eye, yes. But later on checking half of the Pics the eye is not in Focus. And the best Focus performance are all the Fujinons, then Sigma and so on.
Fujifilm is a joke in this generation. X-H2s is a video powerhouse, except is has no anamorphic desqueeze, yet the GFX photocentric camera does have it. Good one fuji... Moving to Lumix soon.

You could see my anxiety ramp up in real time.
I thought it was Luis Guzman making a firmware review. I was so confused.
😂😂😂😂😂
What were your tracking settings on? If you have it sticky it’ll always take time to swap subjects
I went the opposite route when I switched it. Sticky is what I personally prefer because to focus pull looks smoother.

what phone app recording u using? Btw , I didn't know Omar was growing hair.
I think it’s called Accsoon SEE. At least that’s what I use.

It's a seemo. Basically a recorder that converts the signal to be used on your phone. Pretty nifty for something like this.

Nope not yet

Does the file at least save? This is now a new fear for me 😭
people need to start talking about panasonic's AF it's really close to sony except for sticky tracking. Great AF review, thanks!
Do you have tracking settings set to "track subjects moving into frame" or "ignore subjects moving into frame"?
It's on default but this wasn't a thing in previous videos. It's typically my talking head video unless I'm talking about the camera itself.
This is honestly looking good! 👍👍
