you do the same thing with flat tops Neck angle is neck angle. If you don't create this the action height at the bridge is lower and you won't get all the top has to offer. Many newbies make this mistake and it shows . If you want to get 1/2 in string height you don't get this doing a 90 degree neck angle.
John, I just bought a 25’ radius dish from you I just realized that I could have bought a set of dishes for a bit less than buying them separately. I thought I only needed to radius the back but after reading building forms & watching a bunch of vidieos it seems that builders radius the top as well as the back? I’m not Shute what I should do.
I don't make my own necks anymore. I get mine from Rick Penta and Andy Birko you want to have about a 1 1/2 degree on the tenon. This video shown me adjusting the heel for the neck angle ruclips.net/video/FNcbA1P95KE/видео.html
John - Another great video. Thank you very much. I actually have a question that I think you would probably be able to answer. How far down in the neck block should the neck be able to slide, just out of the box? I bought the Martin D28 kit, and I just messing around, decided to see if the neck would slide down into the block, but it stops about an inch down. I am about to glue the neck block to the rims. I thought the hole in the block, and the hole on the heel would line up. Or do I worry about that later on?
this should be a dovetail and usually they are proud of the neck bock. Shimming is acceptable if needed. The hole in the neck tenon is there for the Martin production cycle the screw a handle in that so you should be fine. IF you have a bolt on tenon that may be martin parts but it isn't an officle martin kit . You can email me pics off my web site contact info
Great video! This my second! Got a unrelated question: Just got my Washburn back. The repairman had to reposition the saddle slot. It’s a lot better but the g string frets out some after about the 10 fret. Plus up the neck the open string to the next string octave is way sharp. Would the fretting out cause that extra sharpness?
no the saddle is not correct. where are you located? call me and we can see if we can diagnose your problem. Fretting out is a fret plane issue or bad neck angle being sharp has to do with the saddle location in relation to the scale length
A little confused. In the other videos about setting the dovetail, at the end you said you leave a few thousandths for after the finish is applied. But here you are sanding the neck completely flush with the body. Would you recommend doing this and getting everything flush? Then finalizing everything after finish?
yes that is correct. I used to allow the bit of adjustment but when it comes down to it the extra finish will raise the neck ever so slightly and you will still have to finalize so make it as good as you can in pre set then make perfect on final set and set up
don't be intimidated it easier than you think you just have to try, if you are new at this buy any junk guitar for 10 or 20 bucks before you remove the neck measure from the nut to the center of the saddle write down the measurement ex. 25.50 now use John's method and make that measurement 25.50 land on the backside of the saddle. That will give you enough wood to remove to get the feel for it. Put on your man pants and give it a go have fun. It's easier than you think.

Its a different process with a top radius .This makes it simple with a flat top .

When you sanded fret board with long block - is the sanding block flat or radiused ?
