LG WT1101CW Washing Machine IE Error Drain Pump Runs Continuously Fix

  • This is a how-to video on a low-budget repair that I made to my LG WT1101CW top loading washing machine when the machine stopped mid-cycle and displayed the IE error with the water drain pump running continuously. This problem would even persist if i unplugged the washing machine and plugged it in again. I believe that the WT1201CV and WT1201CW are similar models that suffer this problem, as well.
Here is the link to the factory service manual to those models that i referenced in the video: drive.google.com/file/d/19Q8s...
The factory service manual references several repairs for the IE error, but they all relate to a water inlet error, which could be caused by clogged inlet screens, kinked fill hose, or the water turned off. it does not, however, address the error when it is accompanied by a drain pump running continuously. I suspect that the IE sensor must be related to the volume of water entering the tub in a given amount of time. It's not expecting that the drain pump would be turned on, so the control board thinks that the reason there is not enough water in the tub is because there is something wrong with the water inlet. In reality, the reason that the tub can't fill up with water is because the machine drains the tub as quickly as it comes in!
This repair uses simple tools found in most homes and less than 30 minutes of your time. There is a sticking relay in the control board that needs to be unstuck to turn off the water pump. The process outlined in the video may have to be repeated in the future if the symptoms return, but the repair could last for months or years. The worst case scenario would be a control board replacement, which would be the FIRST thing that a service technician would want to replace if you hired this repair out. This should save you some money today, and potentially give you the confidence to perform that repair should it come to that.
Please be careful when working with electronics, making sure to unplug your washing machine prior to doing anything. If you are not comfortable doing any of this, please find someone to help you that is.
Also, if this was helpful, please like this video with the thumbs up. If you are interested in more budget repairs and DIY projects, please subscribe to my channel by clicking that subscribe button. I have some pretty cool content already uploaded and a lot more coming in the future. Thanks so much! - David

Thank you for posting this. This is the second time I've come here for your advice. In between those times, a sharp smack with the bottom of my fist onto the control panel where the relay is below (sort of where the temp and soil level indicators are) worked a few times too. But, sadly today I need to, again, take it apart as per your video. Thanks again for saving us lots of money by not having to have a repair person come in.

My daughter has an LG Washer WT4870CW with the same symptoms described in this youtube video. Although she was not getting any errors, it was clear the drain was stuck in drain as all the water was gone, but the pump noise continued. When she tried a new load of clothes all the water going into the washer was quickly being pumped out as the pump never shutoff. This procedure of tapping the relays on the circuit board with the two large black capacitors did the trick. Thanks for posting this article. Please add her washing machine model to this post. The procedure worked like a champ first time.

Sir, in my line of business that is called a ‘Techno-Tap’! And yes, it worked for me too! Makes complete sense. I found some new control boards online and I’m going to order one to replace it. Now that I know how to get to it. Thanks!

I have searched and searched for this issue, but apparently the wording is key. Took me STRAIGHT to your video this time around.
My husband and I have been having this issue off and on for the past year. We have just been letting it sit awhile, and it usually resolves. Well, it has been running continuously for 2 days now (power on, draining from the start), and since it won't hold water, of course it is flashing IE. Exact same washer as in the video.
Gonna try this out with the additional input from the comments. Will come back to add how it works out!
Edit: Welp, took me just a few minutes. Followed steps up until removal of ground wire. Tapped hard over where the relay (blue piece with with sticker) was roughly placed from where I could see it in the video. IT WORKED! Now let me go wash some dang laundry!
Thanks a bunch. My husband was seriously considering shelling out for a new washer, but as he doesn't wash the amount of laundry that I do *coughs*, it was less pressing for him. Hence why we have been tolerating this seemingly sporatic issue for so long.

Glad you finally got the wording right! It’s a weird issue, indeed, and from the looks of it, a very common one. You may want to check out the other video i have on this washing machine where i changed out the board. Good luck and thanks for taking the time to comment!

    Dave,
Your video on LG Washer WT1101CW Fix worked. The relay in question is the one with the white sticker on top across from one of the large electrolytic capacitors. I powered up my washer, the drain pump kept running, and I tapped on all of the relays several times until the pump shut off. FYI the tabs did not need to be bent back. Only remove the two screws and pry the cover from the main logic board.
Thanks for your help. My washer is now working.
    Tony
