I have been sim racing for years just using a desk and office chair, i built this rig a few weeks back and i love it. So much more comfortable driving. bonus is it was cheap to build and, its a damn good homemade rig!!
This is just adorable. Embodies everything that had me hooked on ISR back in the day. I really miss the good old days with the two of you (and Jessica)...
Love it. Huge difference from Office Chair and Desk, lap times actually came down too. I put a couple days into planning, then accumulative, about 6 hours from first cut to assembled.
Look at those overalls. That means Shaun is working baby. Can't get much stronger, cheaper, or modular than wood. Sturdy as can be, mount anything you want. Screw in anywhere you want. No mounts or adapter needed to add attachments, just screw onto the beast. Love it.
wow! Love this. New to racing. New to racing games. Always seemed too expensive... all the peripherals. I saw many mistakes in the build.. but omg... so inspirational. Absolutely love this. Especially the flaws. The innovation is so wonderful. Long video, but worth the time. It's a 10! Thanks for sharing.
I had all the lumber at home and i am Loving it. Made some additions for the shifter, added some wheels so i can move it around when not in use and grabbed a seat from the junk yard. Loving it!!!! Thx guys!!!!
I was joking would reply but mobile replying is messed up for me lol it's because you said something like "if you build this rig it's not our fault if you got hurt" lol love you guys videos :)
Built this rig for my g27 and rfactor. Paired it will a seat out of a mustang cobra. It's great! I appreciate this. Had lumber and the cobra seat laying around and paid about $7 all together since all I needed was screws
It wouldn't be hard for a real carpenter to do a lot better but for 2x's and a circular saw under 100 bucks it's not bad at all. Personally I would have spent another 50 or so and done it a lot differently. I'm also a carpenter and was raised building cars. Thumbs up!
Man anyone who has worked with wood and power tools for a long time knows what he's doing isn't that big of a deal. MDF doesn't pinch hard enough to throw that saw when he's using 2 hands and if that guy holds that mdf steady it wont pinch at all.
I just got my Logitech G29..In 2020 December watching it aftef 8 years... i wish I could get this exact Rig. Great job guys! Got many ideas for building mine
I did the same basic thing 8 years ago....used a wood pallet for the base, carpeted with out auto carpeting, put a seat from a Volvo 740, stuck a speaker under the seat and behind it and made the mount for my logitec Gforce steering wheel. It made GT4 that much more epic.
Looks beautiful to me! I can't wait to build this. I can barely afford the steering wheel that I'm prepared to purchase so having a good strong DIY cockpit that I can build myself really saves me time and money. Thank you guys for you time God bless im going to get started building this thing so I can get simulating some racing and Hauling.
I know this is probably an old video but you guys went out of your way to show us how to make something with a very little money!!! This is a statement saying hey, you don't need a shit load of money to buy a already built rig, this is how to build yourself one!!! I actually liked this video a lot.. Thanks for your time
I converted the cupboard under the stairs into a racing rig - just a PS3 with GT, but a 32'' screen, decent gaming seat, and a decent wheel. It's actually really cool - close the door and you could be in the cockpit of your own racing monster :D. I'd recommend it to anyone with a cupboard big enough, full of brooms and broken vacuum cleaners, clear it out and make your own driving sim rig, out of the way of kids and wives and pets.
This looks so easy to do! Might have to look what stuff i've got now! I also love the fact it look likes you two had so much fun doing it! Love the show, Keep it up!
I have an idea...You know that sport cars get destroyed at scrap yards all the time, right? How much would it cost me then to just cut out only the cockpit/cabin (whatever, you know what i mean)and fit a gaming wheel and pedals inside ?That would beat any playseat ever created. It would be second only to motion simulators.
I have seen a video somewhere here on youtube where a guy did just that. Had the front halfof a car sitting in the garage, even had the wheel and shifter hooked up from the car (not a Logitech or whatever). Two front seats, windshield removed and replaced with a 40 inch flat screen. Dudes are playing a sim wearing stocking caps, had cupholders and all, I can't seem to find it though.
Watching this over and over got the plans found a wheel got a seat for 20 bucks will have rig really soon simmering I thought I'd never have thanks guys looks great
Just picked up a perfect condition seat out of an NB Miata. I'm freaking pumped, the folding chair I've been using makes my ass sore by the end of a single race in iRacing.
Ive been up in the air about building vs buying a setup. Even really expensive metal setups are questionable on how solid they are. And no matter how good the setup I always see bad comments about seat comfort. This video made up my mind to just build my own.
I want to start building my own rig made of wood, but i hadn`t any idea planning this. Your rig definitely helps me out. Simple, strong, cheap and is doing the job. And in my opinion, this rig doesn`t look so bad as you said. Little bit more finish and voila. Personally i will upgrade this rig to be more adaptable (Position of Wheelplate, Pedalplate). Thank you so much for giving me the idea and sharing the plans with us. Thank you and greetings from germany. May the grip always be with us. :)
Hey guys... I already made mine one Ver 2.0 starting and inspired on your idea and even taking yours improvement ideas and it is awesome.. I included on the rig 5 speakers and subwoofer (amplifier included), a ButtKicker and a 40" monitor... Thanks for sharin.g your hardworking time and video... I would glad to share some pics with you or anyone interested on build one...
Great video, nice to see normal guys making a sim rig most everyone can build. I will be on my way to making one from your plans with a twist of my own.
Just started making my stand! You guys have really helped me do everything towards my rig, I watched loads of wheel reviews and stuff and have just bought the CSR with elite pedals and a shifter! I'll put pics on the website when its all finished, can't wait until its done! Thanks so much! :)
Bulling it now using 2x6's for the seat runners to avoid that problem. Also covering it in panels and truck bed lining the floor. Might skin the whole thing on countertop material I got left over from a speaker build
Hey guys, That is an awesome job for what you wanted to do. It is functional and cheap. I like it ! I built my own rig with wood and using items I had pack ratted over the years. Like you said with a wood rig it is easy to modify and add to. I have added and modified for the last two years on mine. It is fully self contained now, I have it on wheels and the pc.monitors, sound system as well as all the driving controls are on mounted on the same wood frame. Thanks for the great videos you guys do!
Lol i'm english, I know Imperial. Just funny how America is the only country which uses it still. Why don't you guys join the rest of the world in metric? not too hard..
Inside Sim Racing Lol the thing with england is half our tools are Imperial and Half are metric. But in terms of the actual video, the rig is pretty cool. Would definately DIY like you guys
Great episode guys. Can't wait for the next one. I would also like to see an episode on your real world rides. Sean's Z car, Darin's Camaro, and whatever Thierry's burnout machine is, sounds good. Keep up the great work.
I built mine to spec like them minus raising the seat portion. After 3 years it's still rock solid. Used my G25/G920 and a Fanatec Porsche wheel and it's great (at least how I configured it. Now it's in hibernation due to remodeling a room where it lives but I'm thinking reverse mount Logitech G pedals next and maybe paint it this time around.
If youtube allowed photos to be posted Id post mine here but this is what inspired me to not only get into iRacing but build and improve my own diy sim rig
Well I think this is the guide I'll be using. Got the PSVR2 and the next step is getting a wheel and pedals and something to mount it to, after spending so much on the headset and getting into the wheels... Gotta keep the cockpit as cheap as I can so I can also keep my wife. :p Btw, VR and Gran Turismo is INCREDIBLE. I figured I would like it, but it's so much better than I thought it would be. Looking into turns like you do in the real world makes a massive difference.
AS OF Right now you can get the Act Labs Shifter and newer Metal Pedals and USB adapter off Amazon for under a $100. So if you got a good old wheel and want up grade as of today it's there. Really cool build. Once I'm settled and not moving every year or so, I want to do something like this. At the moment I'm rolling with a Wheel Stand Pro and an aluminum folding chair lol. Hurts my bum after an hour or so, but it is what it is. I make it work.
Cool! I'm a mechanical engineering major with several CADD programs easily available to me and this would be an excellent summer fun project I could do.
I got the plans bought all the wood went to the car yard got a seat built it all myself I changed some of the meurements because I'm only 15 but works good with my fanatec CSR wheel and fits into my cupboard for storage
Great video! I followed along and the only issue I had was mounting my seat because my rails were way different than yours. Came out of a dodge neon and the front two mount at a 90 degree!
Nice, I built my own for when I had the 360 setup. Looks like if I get the new TX 458 wheel, that I will be making a new one. If I can get the funds to get the setup, I will be sure to send you guys a video of the sim rig I will build.
I like the way the Rig looks, it looks rugged. I'd just add onto your design when I do it. Build a connected TV stand, mouse tray, speaker mounts, speaker mounts. Just use your design as a reference point for a good base. This is way better than any other rig in my opinion. That is if you have the time and actually enjoy this kind of stuff, which I do. Plus it's a hell of a lot cheaper.
I suggest putting pads underneath so it doesn't scratch the floor. I also have wheels on the back so when I lift the front the wheels touch the ground and I can wheel it into the corner.
JUST did one. Was about $40 in Wood, $15 in hardware. Got to have atleast a Chop Saw and Drill. The blueprints they provide are fantastic, went together smooth. It's really stable, only problem I'm having is figuring out what I want to do with the shifter. Also, I just used hardwood instead of MDF, worked fine, a lot cheaper.
I have been sim racing for years just using a desk and office chair, i built this rig a few weeks back and i love it. So much more comfortable driving. bonus is it was cheap to build and, its a damn good homemade rig!!

Inspired by the DIY SIM Racing guys.

that rig is not ugly I don't see anything wrong with it

Papo Portillo very true the finish product looks nice
