  • For a fun Summer project, I turned this old, broken, rusty arcade racing cockpit into a DIY sim racing rig. This turned out to be a quite expansive project in which I got the pleasure of using most of the machines in my workshop: DIY fiber laser cutter, DIY fiber laser engraver, CO2 laser, CNC lathe, CNC mill, 3D printing, metal brake, welder, and probably most importantly, the angle grinder with a wire brush attachment! So if you have a half hour to burn, follow along as I take you through the journey of this project.

    It might be time to buy a bandsaw for cutting metal stock. A horizontal would be nice but one of those handheld battery powered units would also work and be handy for other purposes.

    most amazing project I've seen in a long time, I guess 2 more screens might be an upgrade..
    15:44 I think your only challenge is secure mounting solutions, that beast could handle much more

    Wow, that's a sweet resurrection. The screen shake (even after the springs) would make me crazy though. Try mounting something HEAVY on the back of the screen, should dampen it.

    Isn't that an old Daytona USA arcade cabinet? I used to LOVE that game when i was a kid. I spent all kinds of my dads cash to play it.

    Very cool project! Looks great and lovely old-school, and the modern tech is neatly integrated. (going for the Mige really was the best way I think!)
    Personally I'd likely keep the monitor on a separate stand to completely alleviate the shaking issues. Having the panel move that much would distract me, and can't really be good for the monitor. (even if it is much better after the spring dampers)
    Might feel a bit like cheating perhaps by not having everything as one unit though :)
    I can definitely understand if you dont want to do as much rust repair for upcoming project, but kudos for resurrecting a worn abandoned piece of gaming history that otherwise would've been scrapped.

      Thanks for your feedback! I put out this video before I actually did any tuning of the settings in SimTools....once I dialed in the settings for the motion with a little smoothing, the monitor barely shakes at all. In retrospect, I'm glad I went though all the work because it sure is fun to drive!

    I was wondering if is safe to put a 1kw servo motor attached to a wheel and make no safety device between them .
    If there is an error , and servo begins to spin , i don't think u would want to have an 3000+ rpm hand on that wheel .

    • @diyfiberlaser
      @diyfiberlaser  Год назад +1

      That is a valid concern...I have the servo driver limiting the RPM to much lower than 3000 and I installed an e-stop right next to the wheel...hopefully that never happens.

    Is there a specific reason you use a hacksaw to cut your stock instead of a bandsaw?
