    Great video and a huge thank you for explaining the back oil seal and how that is installed. I haven't seen that anywhere else.

    Haynes manuals, they don't always explain things properly. Good video young man!

      Thank you and You're right there! I normally only use them for torque specs but had a quick scan through it now wish I hadn't.

    Where have you been all my life?
    Thanks mate for your time and explanations. I've been SLOWLY restoring a '76 diesel SWB on and off for about 10 years. After getting a heap done, I stalled on getting the rear oil seal and "T" seals to go into place. Can't wait to have another crack at it.
    Inspiring stuff, thanks again.

      From memory, I tried to use the rubber T seals, so I'm hoping that's where I went wrong. I hoping I have the cork one's as well. Might be a bit hard to get in Australia in these days of our covid.

      The Cork T seals are easier to fit and do the job perfectly well there not under any pressure if you struggle getting hold of some you might be able to get some sheets of gasket Cork and make you own.

      Check out how Mike does it.
      The 300 TDI still has the t seal.
      Skip to the 13 minute Mark.

      Unfortunately the links not working. Is it the one where he fills it with sealant instead of using the seal?

    Awesome, I took the engine apart months ago. Forgot how the thrust washers went it.

      I searched all over before I stumbled onto your video. My gasket kit didn't come with the rear main bearing. So I'm on hold till that comes.

      They never do although it makes sense to me that a complete gasket kit would be erm!🤔 complete. 🙂👍

      One last comment, I haven't torqued the main bearings to spec yet. Have to wait for seal. But mine certainly does not spin as freely as your crank. Much more resistance.

    • @retro.restorations
      @retro.restorations  2 года назад

      If using assembly lube there will be some resistance (it's thick stuff)but should turn smooth.
      See what it's like when bolted together. 🙂👍

    Hello, do you have to take the whole engine out to replace thrust washer or can you access by removing the oil pan under the engine?

    • @retro.restorations
      @retro.restorations  Год назад

      If its just the thrust washer then you can do it with the engine in place bit if there worn out then chances are the rest is not far behind. 🙂👍

    Did this with my 200tdi have to say the rubber type seals it peeled a small bit off the T seals They look completely intact So I am hoping it will seal, My god its a Bugger of a Job!

      Thay can be a pain I've just been told they used to soak then in oliv oil for 24 hours to make them seal better. 🙂👍
