The Big Bus (or equivalent) is always a good way to discover the width of a city and the way a city is "organised". And you can spot the places you want to visit or find new ones. And let's face it : when you've just arrived, totally jetlagged but still have a whole day to fill, it's a good option. In any city, in my opinion.
I have to accept that not all tourists are willing to jump into taking the subway trip #1, minute #1... And this is a viable way to see a lot in a day.
I'd alway recommend taking one of the busses, no matter where you are IF you are moving to that city. It can be embarrassing, but you can get a really good idea where everything is. Did it when I moved to London, and it was a great help for jobs and housing locations.
I like taking the hoho (hop on/hop off) buses when I arrive in different cities - it gives a great overview of where you are, so that you are orientated and can then go back and explore specific areas that pique your interest.
Even though I’m a native NYer, I’m definitely one of those NYers that has never fully seen most of the state before, so I would be a tourist in my own home state. In the city I’ve only ever seen Times Square, 9/11 memorial, Penn Station, and of course for the holidays…Radio City, but I’ve never seen or been to any of the other tourist attractions. I’ve never been upstate before, and even though I live on Long Island….I’ve only ever been to Long Beach, Jones Beach, and Nautical Mile in Freeport. So my goal before this year ends is still visit and see as much of NY as possible.
Recently moved to Upstate NY - by any definition - and it's pretty laid back. Lots of outdoorsy stuff out here, not a lot of the bar/attraction scene. More 'make your own fun.'
Thanks for this. We're heading to NYC pretty soon and there are a couple of these (Stardust Diner, Circle Line) that are on our maybe list. Good to have this view. I've really appreciated your videos as we've prepared for this trip.
8:00…Always loved the Circle Line when I was a kid in the late 70’s-early 80’s when I’d go on it on field trips…great commercial jingle that your video brought out of the depths of my memory! (“The ONLY WAY to SEE NEW YORK, Circle it on the Circle Line, Woo-ooh..”)
It's our last day here in New York heading back to derby UK Tomorrow evening, your tips and tricks have been an absolute god send. We're currently staying at the Doubletree Hilton on times Square, followed a lot of your suggestions and they we're perfect from transfer from the airport to the Staten Island ferry. Thankyou :-)
Really great video Jon. As a local that has never done any of these things, seeing all of the tourists "oooh and aaah" over the Statue of Liberty made me a bit teary with pride. I love this City and feel so blessed to be able to live here and get these views everyday! See ya around Park Slope neighbor! :)
We did the bus tour as part of our New York city pass last month, great way to see many things whilst resting the old legs! Been watching your videos for 2 years finally got to see many of the places you have shown us. Thank you 😊
When we were last in NYC, we took a circle line day time cruise that took us all the way up the east river, across to the hudson and back down under the GWB, Saw some parts of Manhattan island i never thought we would.
John. Seriously. The Circle Line has a ton of sentimental value as my family did the CL several times when I was a kid. The last couple of visits, bringing 1st time NYC visitors with me, we’ve done the cruise. THE best way to see NYC and the tour guides are usually outstanding. The only downside is that sometimes the tides don’t cooperate and the boat cannot completely circle Manhattan Island. Thanks for fun video. I really enjoy all your videos 😃
There's a Circle Line tour that goes around the whole city and it is honestly fantastic, especially for how cheap it is. For out of town family/friends, these tours are a good beginner primer, since most people find NYC extremely overwhelming. Great video as always
As a native New Yorker that moved to Florida when I go back to visit family I make sure to do the touristy stuff I didn’t get to do as a kid. 😂 my family thinks it’s cringey but oh well 🤷♂️ I’m definitely going to do the night cruise you did. the Statue of Liberty 🗽 looks amazing at night
Clever idea, love the undercover "tourist disguise"! 😅👏 I had a friend that made me do ALL the tourist stuff once with one of the all-inclusive passes. I remember a party bus that was a fun experience and touring Radio City and also church catacombs were pretty cool. He also made me wait for Stardust and I ordered the cheapest "meal" which was $12 soup haha. A tip for anyone wanting a fantastic view of the East River and all its bridges is to ride the NYC Ferry! Only $2.75/ride (may go up to $4 in Sept?) and free transfers as well. You can go all the way to Queens, and down to Bay Ridge (my neighborhood;) stopping at Pier 11/Wall St, DUMBO, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Red Hook (IKEA), & eventually adding Coney Island. There are lots of other routes as well, check it out! My favorite way around and much less touristy! 😉
I remember being on this bus and thinking I would see you walking along the street! 😂😂 I do recommend it though, we enjoyed it, but wouldn’t do it next time we come. We were in New York over thanksgiving week and the stardust diner line was 1 hour and 30. After seeing your video it isn’t mine and my partners scene. We plan to come back again in the future and we will definitely do the cruise, that looked really good. Always a great video.
A couple of suggestions that are free or low cost: Staten Island ferry (great views of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty) and Roosevelt Island tram ( amazing views of Midtown skyline).
That's what my son did. He was on a cheapo visit to NYC, and looked at the prices to see some sights on the river. Said f it I'll just take the ferry, went across and caught the next one back. Saw everything he wanted to see for peanuts.
Good night. Loved this vlog. I'd recommend taking the NYC watertaxi from Astoria to Manhattan. The views of both Queens and Manhattan are spectacular. Cost = same as one subway ride.
The waiter throwing straws at the lady was funny😂😂😂! I will maybe do the double decker bus maybe in November when I visit NYC again for the amazing views! I did the circle line cruise about a year ago and was well worth the 30 bucks
Great idea and great video! In 2017 we did the same cruise and did a bus tour of Brooklyn both in the cold of November. Only people braving outside on the ferry and we got the double decker bus to ourselves, tour guide was tremendous & he recommended Dekalb food hall to us. Would recommend to anyone else and it’s never a bad thing to do an hour or two on those buses before you get your bearings etc
The I❤️NY short though did it for me 🤣🤣 I l've walked past the Stardust Diner many times & have never been there. The line seems to be too long (I went to Birdland back in February based on your recommendation)
Good Sunday Evening My Friend I Really Appreciate You For Your Dedication And Hard Work For All Of Us You & AK & Tom Should Be Tour Guide As Always Much Hugs And Love Ms British Gray From Tampa Florida Blessings :)
That restaurant was a nightmare to me!😅 but now you made me wanna do the cruise at sunset for sure. I’m moving to NY in a month and binging all your videos
Thank you for giving Circle Line a good review. My cousin was their project manager there for years. I can't say enough good things about them. They treat me and my family very well. We do the nigh cruise. I'll be back this November to run the NYC marathon for the 3rd time.
I am a native New Yorker as well. This video was absolutely brilliant. The circle line is one of my favorite things to do. Love all the history and traveling around the island.
Big Bus is a fast, practical and relatively cheap way to get to know the main tourist attractions of a city, especially those where it is difficult to get around by car such as NY or San Francisco. With my family, we are four, we have used it in many cities and we are always really satisfied. Making the same journey by car, taxi, Uber or public transport would have taken us more time, effort and probably the same amount of money.
As a long time visitor to NYC, when I take my friends there. I hit up places like McSorely's cause you have too.. Ear Inn for a burger (and their chili is great). Then find a neighborhood and bar hop. Unless we go for a concert or something specific. I only make plans one night and either randomly decide on an area to go to or sometimes just end up keeping the day drinking going and find some dinner. I also love sunday nights in the city. most tourists are gone and the locals have to work on monday. Pretty much holds true for all tourist heavy cities.
I also highly recommend Grand Slam for NY souvenirs. Been recommending that place to people visiting NYC for the past 15+ years. Right in Times Square too.
Jon Great video. I was on a bus like that. It was Gray line. The Rangers had them during the playoffs but not this year. The rule was you had to sit especially in the Times Square area.. Ellen Stardust diner. I haven't been there in years but the service was good. Circle line I was on once with a social group it was good.. Seeing the Statue of Liberty an Ellis Island. The boat did go around the whole Manhattan. NYC now has Whale Watching boats one of them is docked in Sheepshead Bay .
Evening on the water. Nice. Back in May we chartered "Cloud Nine" for a dinner cruise for our 30th anniversary and invited 30 friends. Perfect weather. The MOST and BEST stupid money we've ever spent.
I was on that Harbor lights Cruz two weekends ago, the guy on the loudspeaker giving the tour is actually really really good and funny! The beer is expensive, I just ended up buying a bucket and slamming him the whole time and you get an awesome view of the Statue of Liberty at night.
I did a similar thing...went back to the city and did touristy things about 12 years ago. I highly recommend the Revolutionary War Walking Tour, Carnegie Hall tour and Radio City Music Hall tour.
That tour bus looks like lots of fun! Especially the view from the second floor. I love the names of the food at the Stardust Diner: basic Big Bopper and Homer Simpson.
So fun!!! Well done! You guys did amazing job on filming this! I have to say that night cruise is absolutely on my bucket list! I think I would cry seeing all of that beauty of NYC
Hi Hi Jon. It Is Elaine, the recently retired teacher of Spanish in NJ. I have an interesting anecdote pertaining to that “camiseta fenomenal” that you were wearing in your video. Back maybe 15 years I was in the city with a group of students, walking from MOMA to a Spanish restaurant in the west thirties, which unfortunately is no longer in business. As we were making our way to the restaurant, we passed one of the NYC souvenir shops. We stopped so that they could make a purchase. When we got back to class the following Monday, to my surprise, all of my students who had participated in the trip came to class wearing that famous or to some infamous T-shirt. It may not seem that important, but the majority of students in that Spanish for Native Speakers III class had never before visited “la Gran Manzana and nor had visited a real museum. In NJ sometimes we are so very close and still yet so far. Love your videos! ¡Son obras de arte! De Elaine, la profe de NJ
We did the "touristy" stuff and decided against passes because of the cost and the many bundled attractions that did not interest us. Even with my then 15 year-old niece, we avoided the tacky. However, we did get stung by the hustlers selling the Tours R Us/Queen of Hearts boat trip that circles Lady Liberty. The tour started with a rickety bus ride to New Jersey and we had to make our own way back to Manhattan after the boat trip. Shame we didn't know about the free Staten Island ferry that passes close enough for pictures. On my second visit, I was able to steer my nieces away from the touts as we headed for the free ferry. You live and learn.
I have a trip to New York at the End of July this year. So excited, because I have never been to New York. I love your videos, they are very helpful in my planning.
I take buses when I visit NYC. As a street photographer I like being able to shoot from a safe distance and be gone before people realize I took a picture. I like the idea of the bus you took because of the height and vantage point. Next time I visit I’ll do that. Thanks
Will be my third time visiting NYC this Christmas. I'm unapologetic about going for a 10 day pass as I'm going to be hitting the tourist stuff but the Big Bus I'll be doing because pick the right day when it's crisp and clear with nice weather and then top deck photography with a long lens. Get a different perspective of the city and street photography. I'll listen to the audio guide but I expect it's stuff I already know. Stardust is a big nope from me. Circle Line is a must as it's included with my NYC pass and the views for photography.
I've never been on a Double Decker sightseeing bus in NYC only in London after living in the Big Apple for more than three decades. You provided a great experience on the screen.
Great video, Jon! I always say, tourist hotspots became tourist hotspots for a reason. If you can balance having a tourist experience with a local cultural experience, you'll have the best time wherever you're traveling.
HA! “ my disguise was a failure“😂😂 Great video as usual Jon, last time I was there was over six years ago and we ended up having a blizzard because it was January but I loved every minute of it and I sure hope I can come back one of these days again, especially with all the great tips you’ve given me over the last few years!! Keep up the great work and best wishes on that soon- to-be-here baby!
Hey you got good videos of New York City. I've just recently found your channel and instantly learned a good amount. You have very good sources of info that helps with my trip planning and filming for my own channel. Please keep it coming. Thanks.
Very Nice Video! We've thought of doing a bus and boat tours, in addition to walking in certain areas. This was helpful! Thank You for the video and info - very much insightful!
Pretty much as comment below, as a tourist in a major city I think its essential to take a bus tour, especially initially as you can get your bearings as to where things are distance apart wise etc. First thing we did when we visited NYC. and have done so where ever we go in the world. Only place I've never done it is London where I'm from, which is usually the way with peoples home cities
Hi, I visited NY with my niece in April and I loved the NY cruise (I did the Best of NY one). I arrived one hour before it started and we were seated at back of the terrace. So even if I had the views after the tourists at the front, I had time to take pictures, and no one in front of me :) (that is my tip : choose a seat at the back, and wait for the views). I also took the bus but to have a nice way of transportation to go to the Statue of Liberty.
Great video as always Jon. Fun stuff. I didn't do any of these things and outside of the circle line, not sure I want to. HOWEVER YOUR comment about the Stardust burger intrigues me...do you have a best burger in NYC video? PS I would totally recognize you. Lol
Totally unrelated to this topic, but my wife and I are just returning home from a free fan day at the US Open. What a fun day, and if you don't count the $14.50 beer and the 3 tacos for $20 it was probably the best entertainment value in the city. Got to see all the big names up close and sometimes at the same time

So interesting! BIG THUMBS UP LIKE!!
Oh gosh the famous I love NY t shirt
I've never been on a Double Decker sightseeing bus in NYC only in London after living in the Big Apple for more than three decades. You provided a great experience on the screen.
Great video, Jon! I always say, tourist hotspots became tourist hotspots for a reason. If you can balance having a tourist experience with a local cultural experience, you'll have the best time wherever you're traveling.
Amen!
Circle line cruise was the highlight of our holiday
Love the T shirt 😀
I need to do the tourist bus looks like fun ⭐️
I absolutely love this video, I felt like I was on the boat with you all
I grew up seeing those “I ❤️ NY” gear…my hometown is right across the river from the old landfill in Staten Island.
Great video. I loved the music, photography, & 😉content.
this a cool video bro i like this type of style of videos
Hey you got good videos of New York City. I've just recently found your channel and instantly learned a good amount. You have very good sources of info that helps with my trip planning and filming for my own channel. Please keep it coming. Thanks.
Wow! I loved this video so much, Jon! Thank you!!! I wish I could visit NYC! It's so unique! Your Spanish is great, by the way! 🙂
Gracias
I loved this video and all the attractions are kids friendly which is great!
Very Nice Video! We've thought of doing a bus and boat tours, in addition to walking in certain areas. This was helpful! Thank You for the video and info - very much insightful!
I am going to NYC in next month, binge watching all of your vids!! After seeing this video, booked the night cruise! Looked so fun!! Thank you!!!
Awesome video Jon !!
I will come to New York in November. It was a very useful video for me. Thank you very much. greetings from Turkey.
Great video!
I just booked tickets for a week trip in Oct and this upload couldn't be better timing 🙂
Gotta hand it to ya…statue of liberty at sunset got me. Great video! love the channel!
That boat was a little too crowded LOL! Now that fancy jazz club looks amazing! Touristic stuff is mainstream which is always bleh.
Excellent video, loved the content and the choice of background music.
I saw in the background in one of your shots Playwright Celtic Pub I ate there on the roof had ribeye steak really good
Thanks for this one, good to know about the boatride at sunset, that looked amazing 😊👍
LUV the Big Bus I really enjoyed the architecture of the buildings beautiful♥️
Next visit I hope to do a bus tour ...thanks Jon 👍👍😊😊🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹
Great idea. Terrific video. Thanks for this!
I dream to visit NYC! Thanks for sharing this info...
The bus tour was the best part when I first visited!
I recommend Big Bus over Top View. Better busses, cleaner. Better stops, better app. But the busses are great for a first timer on their own.
Beautiful video and I guess you also enjoyed it. Please do another one on Gospel Sunday in church and other stuff
Great video as always Jon. Fun stuff. I didn't do any of these things and outside of the circle line, not sure I want to. HOWEVER YOUR comment about the Stardust burger intrigues me...do you have a best burger in NYC video?
PS I would totally recognize you. Lol
I haven't gone hunting for burgers in NYC much, Peter Luger one is really good.
