I remember watching the Johnny Cash show as a kid back when it was on TV in the 70s, and he sang this back then and it was almost made out to be a humorous song. I think it was a good decision on his part to redo it in this much darker tone when he made his resurgence, and watching this video is almost like a short twilight zone episode.
