Beavis: What kind of music is this?
Butt-head: Uhh, I think it's some kind of gangsta rap...
Damn it bunghole! You beat me to it by a decade.
It was originally a blues composition based on the true story of a black girl named Delia Green murdered by a 15-year old boy on Christmas day in 1900 in Savannah, GA.
Various folk and country versions of this dark ballad have been done over the years. Cash used it as the centerpiece of his comeback album in the 90's.
RA-CHA-CHA...
Cool, thanks for the "low down" on this great song
Wow. The man had a gravity about him. He was able to transmit something deeply real through his music and his presence. He transcended the divisions of his day, singing of sin and Redemption, the true story of us all. 🇺🇸
I first saw this video on "Beavis and Butthead."
Same, ive enjoyed this song for years but i was watching beavis anc butthead a few days ago and i didnt even know there was a video to it
"Is this some kind of gangsta rap?" lol
"Whoa! He shot that chick?" "I know, right? I would have taken her off your hands for you."
i seen this late night on cmt back when it first came out , from then on i became a cash fan . i think johnny got more younger fan due to this being on beavis and butthead
Oh wow...same for me....huh huh huh.
Johnny Cash: the one and only.
no one can touch johnny cash. no one can imitate his style. to me, he's not just country; he surpasses that genre and into his own. left us with a great collection of songs and he will never die
I'm from Norway, and our blackmetal bands doesnt come close to making the kind of dark and somber music video that this is.
RIP Johnny Cash the man in Black
Johnny should have joined the Travelling Wilburys, to turn a legendary superband into the Ultimate Superhuman Megaband of all History.
This man is impossibly cool! Top to bottom, side to side, just everything about this guy and his storied life is beyond amazing. There was no, nor will there ever be, a person who is there, in the public eye for an entire lifetime with as many trials and successes as this guy! I can't think of anyone who is even close to the cool of Johnny Cash! Wish I could thank him in person!
The shots of Kate Moss on the floor in the room is like something out of a true crime podcast.
This is very disturbing but a nice song! RIP, Mr.. Cash!
What kinda music is this?
I think this is like some kind of...gangster rap.
May 17, 1993 - Johnny Cash begins four days of recording in producer Rick Rubin's living room in Los Angeles, backed only by his own guitar. It marks the start of work on Cash's "American Recordings" album. :)
i was there....
i first heard this on mtv in 94 and my jaw dropped and ive loved johnny cash ever since
This is my favorite Johnny Cash song.
You know how that "feminist" started a crusade against Trader Joe's for playing the Stones' "Under my Thumb"? Good thing she didn't hear this song!
who?
Long live the man in black
Hey Beavis & Butt-Head did this video! They thought it was gangsta rap!
i've hardly seen a video that transports a certain feeling that well - and of course johnny's voice! wow
I remember this video on MTV! they used to actually have MUSIC on that channel!
I am watching a CMT special they did on Johnny Cash, I was saddened to hear that CMT initially refused to air the video because of its subject matter, and how it did not fit into the demographic that CMT was going after, MTV however saw art when they saw it and they chose to air the video, and Johnny had the last laugh because he got to have a much larger audience discover him as well as a whole new younger generation.
I know it was a year ago but that was funny as shit man!
cbthethird it was good for about the first 10 years then went downhill from there.
Same thing happened with Garth Brooks--CMT wouldn't air the video for "The Thunder Rolls," so VH1 (and possibly MTV, too) picked it up. Garth isn't a personal favorite of mine but he's obviously doing something right, and I think that exposure mattered to making him the megastar he was.
Beavis and Butthead introduced me to this song.
Amazing what this man was able to do with one guitar, and a beautifully simple song.
Sub-MoSheen.
J. C. CAN DO NO WRONG I MET HIM TWICE GREAT MAN
Totally
Chicken in Black... remember?
@@AshlandMan He wanted to make a bad song, but i honestly love Chicken in black!
@@jesuslover9199 oh same, believe me, I have a lot of fun with it, but objectively it's a dumb song. Nothing wrong with that though. Look at Ray Stevens.
@@AshlandMan I thought you were just trying to hate ;) Sorry!
Dont get me wrong. I love black metal! But their videos aren't this cool and dark
Fantastic song. Fantastic voice. Thank you so much for sharing this.
I'm a nice Delia. 😊
Delia's gone one more round
I'm sure you are.
OMFG! That's Kate Moss, I remember when this was a new video, never noticed it was her lol.
zerpBot Is she the Matrix?
In the Matrix movie? No, that's Carrie Anne Moss.
I had a grin slowly spread across my face. Heard this from a thousand sources. Mr. Cash did it in only the way he could. Kate did real good toooo.
My favorite Cash song. The emotion and storytelling is on par with *Rose In Paradise* by ole' Waylon.
@Jacinto Navarrete orosco I appreciate that. My taste is very varied. My RUclips playlist shows that
This is one of my favorite music videos ever! LONG LIVE JOHNY CASH
Beavis and Butt-Head brought me here.
Dark. But still absolute genius! RIP Mr Cash
Johnny Cash is a GENIOUS!
Simply the best. Period.
I listen to this in the car and absent mindedly sang it out loud while walking through the mall one time, the looks on peoples' faces...
LOL... THAT'S Funny !
My late Papaw Grady "Hack" Wilson was a HUGE Johnny Cash fan!!! Rest in peace my BELOVED Papaw. Your daughter and grandson miss you SO MUCH. :(
i find that hard to believe... i always thought.Norway perfected dark & somber
dark stuff from the Man in Black
adam diamond if you thought this was dark, you should hear him sing Down By The Banks Of The Ohio. In that one he stabs a woman in the breast and throws her in the river to drown because she wouldn't marry him.
Low-down, trifling, cold, and mean. You mean chicks in 2021?
Would you believe the first time I heard this was the day OJ Simpson went on the infamous Broncho ride in 1994?
I was at the local Circuit City in Escondido, CA and all the TVs were tuned into the chase and some employee cued this up on a CD player. . .
True story!
that employee was savage, ruthless
Wow didn't know there was a video for this one. Doubt it got played on CMT lol
Cold Hard Cash...love him!
I’m not sure which video is my favorite for this song, this video or the video of Beavis and Butthead watching this video.
This video is the literal meaning of regret.
I'll bet the dude scores a lot because he wears black...plus he's old.
This video has been added to the Americana Playlist on the Folk Roots & Blues Chanel. Check it out here
U-MV082 - Johnny Cash - Delia's Gone
Little known fact, the woman playing Delia in this music video is Kate Moss.
...And singing about shooting a man in Reno just to watch them die wasn't? What about "They're Hanging Me Tonight" about a man who killed a woman in the heat of passion and heart ache? This is the roots of country and folk music your listening too. The heart of the medium. Songs about darkness, crime, murder...that's right there at the core of the art form. And Johnny Cash never shied away from it. It was part of the music, it was part of him, it's a part of American culture. And you dismiss it?
Wyclef Jean brought me here. 🙌🙌👑
My favorite johnny cash song tbh.
This video should be flagged for excessive amounts of awesome.
the most crying metal. O god!
That is intense ❤
My mother was born a coal-miner's daughter in Harlan Kentucky, 1925, and two of her ancestors were named Delia. That's the only place I've ever heard the name before. Figures that Delia here is a metaphor for a drug, Not being able to sleep 'cause he hears the patter of Delia's feet sounds like withdrawls to me. Great tune.
Hey...Good insight on the lyrics. I didn't think of that.
No, it has nothing to do with drugs, unless you consider a person to be a kind of drug.
Funny, my mom's from Corbin KY, coal miners daughter, my grandma's name was Della
David Smith well I'm another Delia you heard of now
David Smith its about a girl who got murdered in 1900
Ive never seen this video before... Its awesome
" if your womens devilish you can let her run , or you can bring her down and do her like delia got done ".. 😈
The song and video are classics.
@Dash171 Haha me too, when Butt-Head says something like "Damn, this dude needs to calm down."
Thank you for this. Grew up with this man. Greatly missed. Lived in hell, wrote songs of honesty about it and a go to hell mentality. Such fire!
🌹
you can ask anyone from Steve Earl, Bono, & K D lang, to the man sleeping in the gutter, Johnny cash is the one. Even Elvis was taken with the J mans style
he now resides with the gods
Great!i remember when country stations refused to play this new virsion but MTV did and it won video of the year..Country stations was playing the monopoly in 16 stations but lost and looked bad..
Songwriters take a lesson ...
These are the things that were ever on Johnny's man. Do you really think he was that evil a man? Because if so you're being ridiculous. Many a man have sang songs about things in the news, it doesn't implicate them in the events.
replace 'Delia' with 'Julia' and that says it all.
well done, J.C. rip.
Pretty gritty song. You can't get grittier and better than Johnny Cash. He was a good country legend.
This would be one hell of a song to play on a first date. If the girl doesn’t run, she has great taste in music and she’s a keeper.
I love the way he said machine.. mOchine. Just like in One Piece At A Time. "Nevermind the cost of this here mochine..." Awesome.
Jesus loves you guys and He’ll never give up on you. Also Jesus is coming back soon so repent May God bless you and have a blessed day.
kate moss looks so beautiful in this video ;)
Johnny Was And Alwayse Will be One Of The Best singer/ Songwriters ever.
He was way ahead of his time and didnt mind Sticking it to the System.
We Miss You Johnny.
The Rebel Bad Ass Billy Kelley
Bevis and Butthead do a "Righteous Roast" of Modern Classic Johnny Cash tune.
I'm so glad Johnny Cash didn't live long enough to see the woke era. An amazing video like this would not have been well-received by Twitter
Johnny you could have at least tried to talk things out with Delia instead of busting a cap with your submachine!
Gangsta
I never knew that there was a videoclip with this song! Thanks
What didn't this man do that wasn't awesome.just go listen to modern country you'll see.
I was named after this song... 0_0
did someone hear Cash's voice at the beginning of the video? You can listen to it very low. Is it for the video? or what?
I heard it, too.
What did it say?
I guess Kate Moss played Delia Character
somebody said this was gangsta....it is....
is there a lot of work being norwegin
Absolutely class tune!
This song is great but creepy at the same time
My twin sisters name is Delia 😢
Re-Con❤😂🎉😢😅😊😮......"'"
this is wonderful
the patter of Delia's feet....
That is horrific.
You hit it just right, and most people don't know what you know, Cash song was the first rock song too, he use to make up music when he was a kid, mixing Irish and Upbeat Country, and he didn't give a F.
He shouldn't have shot that chick.
messed up song
Just the blues.
sure a lot of delias out ther
be carefull guys
Hilarious song. 😂
This is very cool
she'll return
You're looking too hard, Maddy. Johnny never veiled the meanings of his songs like that. And even he said that the song came from the same mindset that produced "I shot a Man in Reno, Just to Watch Him Die." This is a traditional country folk song about murder and regret and the unbearable dark night of the soul. It's Johnny paying tribute to songs like "They're Hanging Me Tonight."
Hey sal, we must’ve been through this 50
Times already.
She’s dead
