Pregnancy: the only blind date, where you fall in love before you meet each other for the first time. Gefeliciteerd.
Awwww, indeed!! Thank you!
Aaaah, that's the big surprise 😅
Both the baby shower and the gender reveal party are things that people here copied from the US. Traditionally, there isn't really a reveal party for the gender, rather you have either pink or blue "beschuit met muisjes" when the baby is born. This is also the moment that most people traditionally give gifts for a baby: after it's born.
Somehow it feels strange to me too, to celebrate a baby when it is still not here. A lot of stuff can go wrong during pregnancy, so my personal viewpoint is that a celebration isn't in order until the baby is actually delivered...
Congratulations to the both of you!
❤
The original purpose of the baby shower in the US was to help the parents with getting all the necessities for the new baby: clothes, diapers, car seats, breast pumps, and what all.
Baby showers are therefore done before the baby is born and, in the frugal old days , were supposed to be done only for the firstborn.
👶🏻
The gender reveal party is more something that happens in the big cities. I live in the North of the Netherlands and in the past years there were 10 babies born and only one of them had a gender reveal party. So it's not really common but indeed it happens more than a few years back. And especially in the bigger cities. In the Netherlands it's really common to tell the gender just before you tell the name. So after birth.
Congratulations, very happy for you.
Thank you!
Gefeliciteerd ! Leuk voor jullie en spannend !
Such amazing news, congratulations!🎉❤
Gefeliciteerd!
Aaah, namen kiezen, ... the best of luck with that! 😅
Gefeliciteerd!!! We have another dutch thing, after the baby is born, we get a “kraammand” with present in it. And each day you pick one present to unpack, lot’s of fun !
That sounds awesome and thank you!
And if you are from Twente you get a "Krentenwegge" . That's a raisinbread of a meter long.
Dankjewel!
Van harte gefeliciteerd. Echt fantastisch nieuws
Congrats for the both of you! 🎉 Good luck with "de laatste loodjes"
Many congrats and felicitaties to the both of you 🎉🌲⚘️🌹🏵🌻
Congratulations! I'm so happy for you! ❤
Last thursday, a friend of mine and his wife got their second baby. They already started to use the name weeks ago, as if he was already born. That's very unusual here in The Netherlands.
It was nice to have met you in Amsterdam. My compliments to you were sincere for sure. I do appreciate all your videos! Congratz for this big news!
Awww, thank you!
🤰🏼🤱🏻 gefeliciteerd, congratulations to you both.
Great News Ava, congrats to the two of you! Enjoy every minute of it.

gefeliciteerd! Spannend hoor! veel geluk samen! Ga je al oefenen met een bakfiets?😊
Dankjewel!
Congrats to you both!!🎉
Wow!! Our Dutch-home born daughter is an American citizen! As an American parent, who lived a considerable part of life up to 18 years AND a considerable part of life after 18 years of age, the child can technically ALSO be granted a US citizenship. A true tax burden but the freedom to move and live freely in both North America AND the EU is humanly amazing. Enjoy your enriched life to the fullest!! There will be moments that could feel tough, if that ever happens just become grateful!! Wish you tons of love in your family!!!
Congratulations 🎉
Wow, congratulations to the both of you!
Gefeliciteerd jullie twee! Geniet samen van de 'journey'!
So happy for you and your wife, Ava! It always feels special when someone you only really get to know through a screen and their videos start a new phase of their life like this.
Awww, thank you so much!
Congratulations! My daugther will be 18 years old this year. We didn't have a babyshower as that was not something we did back then in the Netherlands and we deceided not to know what we were expecting. With our second child, we wanted to know if we could keep all the girl clothes so did find out before. Babyshowers where becoming a thing then (14 years ago), so I was lured with an excuse to go with my brother-in-law to go check out a car he wanted to buy for my sister. He drove me to their house and all the women in my and my husbands family and some friends were there and suprised me with a babyshower. It wasn't something I would have plannend myself, but it was a nice surprise.
Wat een prachtig nieuws. Van harte gefeliciteerd.❤❤❤❤❤
🇨🇦 gefeliciteerd ‼️
Baby showers are the same as in the US here in Canada. Hate them!
My Mom as a new immigrant to canada from the Netherlands went to her first Baby Shower in 1959 .... she thought it bizarre, however, she joined in the festivities a month before the baby was due ..... the Mom to be received so many gifts for her and her baby .... the baby was stillborn ....
the Dutch way of having 'krambezoek' after the baby has arrived is way better.
Van harte gefeliciteerd! ❤🎂🎉
Groot nieuws, Ava! Felicitaties voor jullie beiden.
Congratulations!
Gefeliciteerd 🎉🎉
Van harte gefeliciteerd ❤
Congratulations! And you're having a summer baby, that's cool! For me, as a Dutch, the concept of babyshower is weird (call me oldfashioned if you will). We do kraamvisite, where people visit, bringing gifts and eating beschuit met muisjes after the baby is born. Though I can imagine if you think having visitors every day for two months is a bit much, a babyshower where you have everyone visiting at once might be a good alternative.
Congratulations to you and your wife, Ava !!
Indeed a lot of differences in culture with the USA. The Dutch people never have been extravagant about getting children, at least it wasn't common when we had or child, about 25 years ago. Knowing the sex of the child, we opted for, was still a bit of a thing in those days. And yes.. presents indeed are given after the baby was born, because then the sex and size of the baby were known and a lot of people like to give cloths or toys for the new born.
Another thing different from the USA is kraamhulp, a specialized nurse assisting the mother in the first week after giving birth, het Consultatiebureau, checking health and progress of the new born, and Ouderschapsverlof for both partners (wasn't there back when).
When we were to have our child there also was an opportunity to have some course in some parenting skills... diapers, washing, carying the kiddo etc. Check out if that still exists.
We had three children. No babyshowers, no gender reveal, ‘kraamborrel’ or other rubbish. Just happy with our little ones.
The boys were both born at home, our girl was a bit more trouble so born in hospital. ‘Kraamhulp’ was necessary the first time (I was very ill and had a high fever for days). The other times ‘kraamhulp’ was just more trouble than help. I gladly saw them go after 8 days.
My kids are adults now. My youngest son is just 18. My girl would have been 15 next week, but she died 6 years ago (don’t be sorry, it is completely ok, her body just had enough).
Hoping you will enjoy being a parent at least as much as we do. It’s a wonderful thing. Congratulations and I hope you both have a good pregnancy and delivery. I’m very excited for you two!
Oh my gosh! Congratulations!!🎉🎉
Gefeliciteerd! Wat een fijn nieuws! Groetjes van één van je goede vrienden! 😁😉

Gefeliciteeeeeerd!
Congratulations! 🎊 ❤ 🍾 🥂
Congratulations! That's such wonderful news!
Absoluut geweldig nieuws! 🎉😊🎉😊🎉
Congratulations!!!!!! I’m certain you’re going to be great parents!!
Wow gefeliciteerd.
Congrats!
Congratz! That is big news. Wishing you lots of fun and love with the new family member!
Gefeliciteerd ❤
Regarding baby shower yeah I gind strange, sharing names is more common in Eastern Europe, Middle East and Asia.. so that sounds normal as names have meaning/wish of parents.
Gefeliciteerd! Wat leuk zeg :D
Funny, i know you write and speak excellent Dutch but still it feels more appropriate to respond in English ;-) Congratulations on your pregnancy! You will be great parents and it will be fun to hear about all your future adventures as a family. As a Dutch person i relate to your wifes view on what to celebrate and what not (yet), but it is so nice to hear about the American way to share the news. Thank you for sharing this with us. ❤
Gefeliciteerd allebei! ❤
I knew it as soon as I read "big news"! ❤❤❤
Congratulations to you both!! Great news ❤❤
Here in Denmark, there is no celebration before the child is baptized. It usually happens a few months after giving birth. The name is secret until then, so attend to baptize in church, it is here you hear the name for the first time. There are of course minorities who do it differently.
Congratulations to the both of you, this is an exiting time, please enjoy it as much as possible.
Wat superleuk voor jullie!! Gefeliciteerd!!
Even though you're not pregnant yourself, even you have a glow...
Is a babyshower also not meant to help the parents-to-be get started with physical stuff you need after you get a baby?? That's why a babyshower is before hand. And here in NL the party is after the birth, so perhaps the presents are a bit different? (Thinking aloud here)
Congratulations, I wish you all a fantastic and happy time.
Gefeliciteerd!! That is so awesome and you’re glowing while telling this news ❤
Gefeliciteerd met de aanstaande baby. Wat leuk om te horen!
Many congrats to you and your wife !!!
Gender is not important. Just have a beautiful healthy baby!
Gefeliciteerd!
Congratulations Ava and Ava's wife! Wishing you health and happiness!
Gefeliciteerd!!🎉 All the best for you and your wife!
Congratulations and gefeliciteerd! I'm super happy for you two (or three I guess).
Gefeliciteerd Ava, leuk nieuws.
Aw congratulations!! I wish you both all the health and happiness in the world❤
Van harte Gefeliceiteerd! You will be a great parent for sure! Traditionally one would be very careful not to jinks things. My grandma really was worried, my parents bought a pram before the first child was actually born. My oldest brother is from 1957. Back then naming was very simple. The oldest son is named after the grandfather on the fathers side, my oldest sister is named after my grandmother on my mothers side. My next sister is named after my grandmother on my mothers side. My then next sister is named after my oldest sister on my mothers side (No female siblings on my fathers side. And I am named after my grandfather on my mothers side. Don't you dare deviating from those rules in the 1960ties in Friesland :-)
How nice, gefeliciteerd Ava!
Congrats! Also, we've taken it upon ourselves to start male babyshowers as well. Which basically involves an outing or activity in the woods, bbq and drinking. So you're standard male outing but we've got an extra excuse because of the baby.
Thank you, and what a nice event! Love the idea.
Congratulations. What a amazing news for the both of you.
What I’ve been told is that the nipt test won’t disclose the baby’s sex to avoid parents aborting the pregnancy in case they have a strong preference. Yes, the sex is revealed a few weeks later but the idea is that fewer parents will then decide to abort.
That said, I know of parents who travel to Belgium for the nipt test as they do reveal the sex there. You may read into that whatever you like.
Gefeliciteerd!!!🎉
Congratulations! That's indeed big news. Thanks for communicate with us.
Thank you!
I’m an American living in Zeeland (rural, South Western Netherlands). In the last month, I’ve been informed of 2 baby showers and reminded it’s a new phenomenon. 😂 You’re not naming your baby after a grandmother or grandfather? That’s the Dutch tradition! Consequently, names are recycled every second generation. When my husbands grandfather died, all who carried his casket were cousins named “Hendrick”!
Fantastisch nieuws! Gefeliciteerd!
Congrats ❤ I have been to a baby shower in the States twice, was at someone's home, and indeed gifts for baby on its way. Here often cute birth announcement cards(geboortekaartjes) where you find out the name, date of birth etc. That's one thing I missed in the States. As for gender reveal parties way over the top. Depending on when the shower is held, sometimes it's revealed during the baby shower, at least that's how I found out once. Pretecho usually week 20 as before that there's still a great chance to hide the sausage so to speak. If you would really like a baby shower, then celebrate it like they do in the States and no extravaganza. Let your wife know, just some friends, baby games and cake at home. Maybe compromise?
Congrats, you will be great parents!
Gefeliciteerd 🎉. Congratulations. I am very happy for you. Never had the pleasure having a baby. Cannot wait for the gender video. Bedankt, thanks for this video.
Van harte gefeliciteerd!
Congratulations Ava! I'm very happy for both of you.
Cheers gefeliciteerd
I think part of the reason that gender reveal parties and baby showers were not very common in the Netherlands until fairly recently is the calvinistic nature of a significant part of the population. It's partly 'doe maar gewoon, dan doe je al gek genoeg' (just be normal, that's crazy enough), and partly 'prijs de dag niet voor het avond is' (don't praise the day before it's evening). Throwing a party for a baby that hasn't been born yet, would be tempting fate.
Congratulations for the both of you! Expect 'kraamvisite' after the birth of the baby where you will receive gifts, tons of it in our case. Over here we do not need the babyshower thing to cram everything in 1 day. We have maternity leave, contrarary tp the US.
Congrats!! Saw this "life update" coming a mile away based on the title. Maybe it's just my own new parent instincts at work (probably not).
Edit: pro-tip regarding gender reveal; use easter eggs under a cup. Ta-Da! It's the blue or red egg. A big party shortened to a small informal event with parents and some friends. Worked just as well without any cost beyond a bag of Easter eggs.
Congrats 🎉 you both will be amazing parents ✨☀️✌️😎✨
Congrats/gefeliciteerd!🥳
Wat een leuk nieuws. Van harte gefeliciteerd.
