Our medal of honor in America has never been bestowed on a foreign national in until 2010 that was the same for you Germans. I may not be able to understand the full scope but I just imagine what it would be like if a German received the American medal of honor. For us it is the highest award we could possibly give and most people who earn it do so with their lives I would imagine it’s pretty similar to the German Medal of Honor. it’s very moving and prideful and I truly think it encompasses the spirit of being American we do not run we do not hide“ simply put if you’re fighting with us It is the same to us as if you were an American yourself
Excellent!! I served in Germany for three years with the US Army. I worked closely with the German Police and their criminal investigators. They were a fantastic bunch and I learned so much. A professional law enforcement group. Two thumbs up to everyone!
Very touching moment of a friendship. And I mean friendship of two countries and I don´t mean the NSA or politics etc. - that´s a totally different story.

@@ihavenoname3014 As of today , nobody really knows why we went to war in 1917 . The biggest reason was political and Germany was never our enemy at that time . They weren’t even called “Germans” back then . They were commonly referred to as “The Hun” . All of Europe at that time was in conflict with each other’s neighbors . 1/2 of Europe’s Monarchy were the offspring of Queen Victoria . Europe was Class Structural, War was a common measure of failed diplomacy. Great Britain and The Germans were in a deadlock in the worlds biggest mud hole called France. More soldiers were dying of cholera, and infection than enemy bullets . The British were finished . They used and called up every reserve , commonwealth, territory to fight for them . So they called the U.S. to break the stalemate . But under no circumstances were we ever Enemies. Do you have HBO ? Watch the ending of Band Of Brothers . When the German Officers surrendered, they allowed them to retain their personal weapons . They were trusted . We had no quarrel with them . Too many German Officers were educated in America. The Empire Of Japan was our sworn enemy . Tito Mussolini spoke out against the US , however he spoke for himself after his entire army laid down their weapons. We fought Germans in WWII to free Europe. We had no quarrel with the German Empire or the people . Only their elected leader and his party . Sound familiar? In the mid 1980’s , I was stationed in Germany . I was a regular at a pub and made friends. The Pub Owner’s Father Visited on Saturday’s . We always talked . He always reminded me of how wonderfully he was treated as a POW during WWII . He was shipped to Texas where he was given a job on a farm . He was paid $5 a week, Fed 3 times a day, he loved it ! The 1930’s were lean times for Germany , he was paid more as a POW than as a Soldier . I spent my last 3 years in the Army with the 82nd Airborne Division . I was 89 Days And a Wake-Up On December 18 when we were flown to our ASP in Homestead AFB In Florida in the middle of the night . We dumped our gear and took a MAX Ammo Load for a Low Altitude Jump. We were getting ready to invade a strategic enemy . Panama . We trained , armed, equipped, and fed their military . 6 hours later , I’m shooting them up outside the Commandancia HQ. I never had so much fun in my life ! A week later , All was well . Manuel Noriega surrendered , we killed 1/3 of his PDF and his “Dignity Battalions “ , loyal supporters - A Familiar Theme . Panama is now a Banking Hub Of South/Central America . But we were never enemies with Panama . I have a CIB , Combat Jump Wings , Bronze Star From those 4 days of no sleep . United States and Germany share the same values and ideas. We fight for the same greater good together on the same battlefields. That creates a special bond between our soldiers and our nations. Powers that try to challenge us dont even understand the basics of this bond and can never divide us. Imagine risking your life for your allies and help each other where you can, being an honour and not a burden. That's so cool!

Very nice, heart warming, to see something as magnificent as this. I am American and it is wonderful to see this happen to one of our own and I pray we can do the same, in return, because now, we not fight countries, we find dangerous people. I guess I said enough and thank you to the German people and government, for keeping us in their hearts.
Under Trump, in my opinion, an unpardonable insult to Germany was pronounced, because to accuse a German Chancellor of compliant cooperation with Russia is to express suspicion of high treason.

Germany is such an example for any nation to emulate, and their conferring this on an American Soldier means so much. Thankyou Germany for participation in Supporting us all!
@Marshmallow Man Weird? Perhaps you’ve never examined the SOFA between Germany, NATO, and the USA. I’ve been stationed there for years and always been impressed by the warmth and welcome they extend to Americans! Who could blame them for not wanting 17 year old males away from their homes for the first time? You have to be able to differentiate between German economic aims and German leadership in Industry, Sciences, and the Arts. We now have a tiny presence in Germany since the Cold War, and at some point that will be no presence. Economics is a practical reason for an American and NATO presence, Germany spending what, 2% of GDP? The Americans spend what, 5%? And no, most Germans do not hate the USA-they have partnered in anti-piracy, training in Afghanistan, and numerous other joint missions. There are real differences, but the core relationship is the same since the Cold War. The anti-Europeans sentiment in this country is really, really shocking-amongst a subset of a certain Party. No surprise there, that’s existed since the First World War. And the money spent supporting Allies is part of a successful strategy since WW2 to not look for Allies in the midst of a conflict-but build them beforehand. Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, and Rumania and Ukraine would currently welcome a greater NATO presence. Something to think about.
Can some of you guys just stay with a fine story and fine men, instead of whining , bringing politics into it or being offensive ? Better be grateful, that people like that still exist. Those complaining should ask themselves if they could be standing there. So, better take it easy.
I 100% agree, there is no politics in a brave hero receiving the Medal of Honor from another nation!!! That day is all about SSgt Woken as it should be!!!!

Unfortunately, we are not told where and during which mission this rescue took place, but the US soldier always behaved in a comradely manner and fulfilled his duty. However, the war in Ukraine with German participation is by no means acceptable and it is a disgrace that those in power in Germany are supporting this war in the interests of the USA. Dignity and honor, for whom should that apply? Certainly not for the soldiers who are putting their lives on the line, they don't even realize it!
Boy I sure miss living in Heidelberg, Germany. Can't wait to go back someday. Now if I can find someone who would like to tag along and do there own thing if they wish. Congratulations on the Medal.

Next time you see a military man or woman, you thank them and move on!
Germany's equivalent to the US Medal of Honor or the British Victoria Cross is the Bundeswehr Cross of Honor for Valour. It's a very beautiful medal. Google search it for a picture.
To all those who find it so amazing that 80 years after WWII to old enemies are suddenly friends, well - it's actually not that weird, and far from being a unique case. History is full of similar stories, and even more astonishing - countries that in the middle of the war changed sides, and the same person who was yesterday's enemy that you had to kill or he would have killed you, is suddenly a friend, and vice versa. 80 years is a very long time, until not so long ago a war broke every several years with new allies and new enemies. Of course, WWII was one in a kind, but still. Today you can see in Blue Flag exercises German and Israeli jets sharing formations (the Bundeswehr's cross and the David Star together) and even maintaining intimate relations. That's life, always has been.
A significant honor not bestowed lightly. Thank you Germany for recognizing my countries soldier in this way. Indeed, I know we have been "friends" for many years it does seem a little weird as you were such a strong foe during WW2.It also seems weird that both soldiers are alive to tell about the incident that led to the award. Take Care and God Bless you and your military forces and nation.
USA and Germany are and always will be the left and the right part of the same heart. The german american friendship connects the world from america to europe.
It looked like the German Defense Minister was struggling to put the medal on his shirt. I'm not surprised - where the hell are you going to put it, being that the award wasn't designed for that uniform, and being that this impressive Staff Sergeant's uniform is so full of ribbons and awards? A truly excellent display of the camaraderie that soldiers can show from countries that not so long ago were sworn enemies.
As a german/american this made me tear up. It's so great to see us like this after the last 80 years. Thanks to all service members of Germany and the USA. Your service is vital and will never be forgotten.

Actually it really sucks that this video has this low view count. An American soldier getting a German medal for fighting side by side is extraordinary and shows despite all the differences that in the hardest of times we can count on each other and can acknowledge that.

Genau ! Ich bin ein Amerikaner, aber, ich liebe Deutschland!
Excellent!! I served in Germany for three years with the US Army. I worked closely with the German Police and their criminal investigators. They were a fantastic bunch and I learned so much. A professional law enforcement group. Two thumbs up to everyone!
It's years later, and I came across this again. As with the previous time, I found myself standing up and clapping. Wunderbar!
Very touching moment of a friendship. And I mean friendship of two countries and I don´t mean the NSA or politics etc. - that´s a totally different story.
That's sad and true. It's sad because our contries have so much in common and true because your government is paranoid and our government is naive.
What an honor. I was at Baumholder 2010-12 but spent more time in Afghanistan when I was stationed in Germany. The time I did spend in Germany was fun. 🍺 Prost!
I was stationed in Baumholder 85-87. Engineer.
How did I never hear of this? This is huge! This was a huge deal and a major honour.
This is awesome. Thank you Germany for recognizing our man! 🇺🇸
Sadly you denied both chances to make a better world by fighting against you germanic brothers in both world wars. Now all major white nations will look like a mixture of arab and african countries.
What a great video. The Germans I worked with, I know would give their lives for me as I would them. German Soldiers are a very professional group and Im damn pleased they are on our side :)
Yes, this is extremely moving for me, to see the two countries come together ln such a manner. Having a relative born in Germany and spending time going back and forth between the two countries as well as being a US veteran I'm full of pride. Congratulations Sergeant! And in typical German fashion I believe the ensemble in the background is playing a piece by Bach.
Ich liebe Deutschland!
I think, there are not many friendships that developed after being worst enemies in the past. This alone makes this a remarkable moment. Congratulations!
liars do make incredible lies.
So good to see soldiers of 2 different countries standing together united. This is what's needed, unity among nations.
Eine Einheit unter allen Nationen damit es nie wieder Krieg gibt!!!
Pete, you make all of us so proud.... John and I could not be more proud of you if you were our own son. You did a great job on your speech! Lovin' you! Aunt Kathie
We've come a long way since WW2. Glad to see this!
Germany Was Never Enemies With The USA . The Real Tension With The German People v. President Ronald Reagan Was When He Saturated The Urban German Landscape With Midrange Atomic Missiles . Placing Them Next To Schools .
@@youfuckmywife6719 Uhh, dude? We were very much enemies from 1917-1918 and again 1941-1945.
I stayed in until May of 1990 for medical reasons . I took a while for my Purple Heart To Get Approved .

United States and Germany share the same values and ideas. We fight for the same greater good together on the same battlefields. That creates a special bond between our soldiers and our nations. Powers that try to challenge us dont even understand the basics of this bond and can never divide us. Oh my. I’m so proud of this soldier and both countries.
Thank you Mr. Woken for saving one of our soldiers. God bless you.
Very nice, heart warming, to see something as magnificent as this.

Yeah! Right! Like rest of occupied world that is supporting u.
The American are our brothers in arms !
We are proud to call them our allies and friend.

Great honor to recieve a foreign medal! however my advice to the bundeswehr is, to bring back the iron cross, wtich is, as everyone knows, the highest german medal. i am aware of the history of this medal, but maybe by now it can be reintroduced.

Thats the replacement of the Iron Cross:

Ehrenkreuz der Bundeswehr, I originally thought that’s what he was receiving, but I think it’s used more as a purple heart equivalent
Screw the Iron Cross, bring back the Pour le Merite! It looks way better.

I thank our German allies for this it warms my heart to see our 2 great countries so close now Germany has stepped up to the plate with this awful invasion on our Ukrainian friends I appreciate the help and support of the german people it hasn't gone Unnoticed by us all God bless we look forward to a very long tight partnership between all nato allies stay safe 🇺🇸🇩🇪
Wow!!! This makes me proud!!!🇺🇸❤🇩🇪
Boy I sure miss living in Heidelberg, Germany. Can't wait to go back someday. Now if I can find someone who would like to tag along and do there own thing if they wish. Congratulations on the Medal.

This is awsome. Nice to be recognized by other countrys especially when you go above and beyond the call of duty to save each other. Glad Germany is one of our better Allies. God Bless all Allied service men and woman from around the world from Oklahoma,USA.
Great job. Glad to see and hear that Germany is helping out in our messes. I'm also glad we were there when they needed us.
Our messes? Do you not know who attacked us on September 11, 2001? If our brave fighting men and woman from all branches of the Military, weren't killing terrorists (Taliban) in Afghanistan, those terrorists would be here killing American Civilians.
Daddy Britain 🇬🇧
Germans have extraordinary language skills.
Great having them as allies.
This realization is what I want to see more of.. thank you for posting Don.

As a german american this makes me so proud!!
As a Veteran and an American, I am extremely proud of this Staff Sergeant! God bless America!
