I would suggest that you read what you own before buying more stuff. Also don't compare your collection to someone else's one and think you need to buy more volumes. Great tips boogie.
I’m actually a little different when it comes to this. I’ve been collecting for about 4 years now and I usually keep about 10% of my collection unread just for those slow months when I don’t/can’t or am waiting for sales to add to the collection
I’ve been collecting over the course of 10 years (5 years of active collecting) and my biggest advice for beginners would be to only invest in the series you are genuinely interested in/intrigued by. When I was first returning to the hobby I would go to my local used book stores and buy random volumes of random series just because they were a couple dollars as opposed to saving my money for newer volumes and series at retail price. Eventually I ended up with series in my collection that I had little to no interest in reading. Even if you stick to your monthly budget and end up with a lighter haul because you bought the volumes new as opposed to used, its so much more rewarding to have in your possession series that you actually are excited to own and read. Aiming towards quality over quantity when building a collection will definitely pay off, I promise you.
This comment is so helpful. I hope people read this one. Very good advice - and it's something I have been doing for awhile. Yes as a RUclipsr I do silly stunts and buy what the chat wants sometimes - but other than that my physical collection is curated by me, for me, and all series I very much enjoy currently on the shelves.
that’s personal…some people like having different manga in their collection that maybe they don’t love..maybe a friend or child will enjoy it. Hobbies should NEVER cause regret, that’s an addiction. Find a solution for unused manga
I also want add is that, when you start a manga collection. I recommend that you start with a small series that’s about 4-12 volumes. If you start with a small series you can read finish reading the manga sooner. Plus it helps if you have a small budget. Manga can get really expensive that’s goes around 10 to 20 dollars in retail price. Because if you start a series that’s around 45 volumes, it will take you lots of time and money to complete/finish the series. You can agree or disagree on that. But otherwise read what you like and spend on the series that you want to collect. Overall Boogie you did a great job on this video, keep up the good work and of course happy creating ;).
Now this is an interesting point. I can definitely see the logic and somewhat agree! Of course save money & time! Great addition. Also if the series is long and budgeting is something you really need to be strict on - there is always the library!
I actually agree with this point. When I first started reading manga, the first three series I got into were between 4 and 7 volumes, but I didn't realize that these were relatively short series. I thought it was the standard because I wasn't really searching for shorter manga, I was just looking for good manga and the first few series I came across were shorter (first volume of the first manga I got was Akira Volume 1, which has 6 large volumes to it, not sure if you'd consider it short or not, but it's not as long as even Rurouni Kenshin for example).
Must be nice living in america and being able to have lots of manga sales. Here is the Netherlands is pretty difficult to get good deals on manga. Certainly when you look for specific stuff.
i suggest buying on book depository if you want to buy manga physically. they have good deals and their manga collection is amazing. The best part is that their shipping is free! they ship to 160+ countries including the Netherlands.
I live in the US and I can say that manga is more spread out everywhere like barns and noble. But when I buy only and I wasn’t good deals there’s always no free shipping so it’s literally the same cost as if I had bought it at the regular cost.
I feel you, I live in NL too and recently got interested in manga, I have been trying to find places where can I buy manga but as you said it’s hard too find
lol het is andersom voor mij houd marktplaats elke dag in de gaten en bookdepository + ik woon in breda heb 2 plekken waar ik ook locaal winkel manga kan kopen valt best wel mee en ik koop via ebay af en toe meer dan genoeg keuze
Don't buy more than 2 volumes of a series you haven't yet read. Buying one or two volumes and not liking them. Oh well it's a small amount. Buying 10-20 but having no clue if you even like it is just a disaster. Try not to buy into hype and use your personal judgement on if you'd like a series. See this all the time. People going for popular series and not knowing what the fuss is about. A collection you've bought using your own tastes means way more to one where you don't care about what you own. Start slow, then pick up if you want more. People seem to go in huge and buy 100-200 volumes and then realise manga collecting isn't for them and then try and sell everything off.
I've made this mistake REALLY hard when I first started out, I read the first Deluxe of Berserk, loved it, bought al of those as well as Hellsing and Blade of the Immortal Deluxe. I read those, and then I went completely mad. I spent around 1700 usd on tons of whole series in the span of a week, not reading the first volume, some of them not even knowing the synopsis of it, just going from recommendations and gut feeling "I think I'd like this". (All of Monster, 20CB, PunPun, JoJo's part 1-4, Saint Oniisan +pre-ordered what hadn't come out) Luckily I ended up loving all of them, but it was still an incredibly unnecessary gamble. Plus I could've gotten them cheaper on sale or used, but I was impatient.
honestly, people that buy just off of the looks of a cover or the popularity of it don’t make sense. then they just leave them sitting on the shelf to never be touched again.
I agree with all of these! I'm a beginner to collecting but I've watched so many manga video's, hauls, collections, that I know way more than I need to! One thing, i'd say is don't be afraid to drop and sell series. If you buy a series and don't end up enjoying it theres no point in finishing it, and if you really feel like you have to, buy it second hand in bulk, go to the library, or read it online, there's so many options! and if you're starting out with manga and (i assume you watch anime as well, haha) and you don't have any idea where to start, try picking up a series you've already watched and love. I picked up MHA just to get ahead of the show and avoid all the spoilers and ended up loving the story even more after reading the manga! These comments have great tips too so I'd say listen to those as well. OH! And to anyone reading this comment, read jujutsu kaisen and watch the first two episodes on crunchy-roll
Diversifying series is really a good advice, especially if you feel like themes are too recurrent in the genre you’re in right now. If you ever feel like one genre is getting too repetitive, ask around to find a genre that might also be for you
This is how I found out my love for psychological and horror manga. I got burnt out on the few volumes of naruto and shoujo manga that my family bought me rarely. I used to read online a lot but when series I loved online get a release in the U.S. I buy them as soon as possible.
What I kinda hate about comic stores where I live is that the workers are usually either grumpy or quite indifferent, so buying online is my first choice
Started really diving into manga at the start of the year, don't have much but I would say for those who are anime watchers and want to get into manga, read what you watch. Because there are so many stories and it can be overwhelming at first to choose one. For example, I watched Demon Slayer first and then started the manga, and it's been an absolute joy. So far my collection only has manga of animes that I've watched, but definitely will grow into being more diverse 😊
Great tips! I myself use myanimelist and goodreads, and I love them 😍 jeje. Love to see all my stuff organized and being able to see the good reads recommendations
I just ordered volume 7 of 20th Century Boys! Great video Boogie! I loved that you mentioned go to the library, you can even recommend a book if they don't have it.
Ive always loved movies and series but never really got into comics other then a few here and there as a kid. I stumbled upon some star wars comics and fell in love from here manga and anime what this is incredible how the hell did i not get into this sooner lol the beautiful thing is there are box sets and digital omg just awesome!!!!! Love your channel really cool
My local 2nd and Charles had a guy trade in his entire 72 volume Naruto collection. They were in amazing condition and first prints. The store priced them around 3-4 $ per volume and had a buy 2 get 1 sale. I spent maybe around $150 for the whole series that day. I'll probably never get a deal like that ever again.
I usually start by reading my manga online and normally wait for the box sets to release so I can have the physical copy now, the box set is always less expensive in the long run, plus it looks nice
I usually buy a series I like right away and then once I finish it it gets a pretty box set. It happened with both Tokyo ghoul series and vampire knight. But i held off on assassination classroom so maybe I'll get that one.
As a 35 year manga collector since the days of Area 88 floppies, I agree with the entire awesome content in both the video itself supplemented by these comments Here is an important tip from all these years collecting manga: ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND: BOTH DARK HORSE (DH) AND VERTICAL manga will undoubtedly/inevitably go out of print (OOP) quick, fast and in a hurry - so, if you are digging any DH or Vertical series, always err on the side of purchasing that series immediately rather than waiting Of those two though, DH is the King “Worstest”
This was such an insightful and beautiful video Boogie! Great tips. I have saved alot buying from Book Depository, instead of buying from Swedish book stores. When I'm in Stockholm (1-1,5 h from where I live) I try to support comic book stores even though they usually are really expensive, but just to support them so they don't go out of business.
David! Glad to hear you're saving some money over at Book Depository! I also love the fact that you'll go into your local shops and support even though you know it's expensive. I do the same thing :)
I love this video! I’ve been reading manga for so long and you make so many good points. I always try to read series either online or at my library before investing. For example, I read almost all of one piece at my library when I was younger and now am collecting all the volumes. Also, when it comes to buying from local shops, I work at a used book store and I know that once we form a relationship with a customer, we try our absolute best to put on hold or get the book your looking for ASAP. And the community is absolutely the most magical part of reading manga (or literature in general), both online and in your city.
Typically it's shaping up to be Wed. Friday. Sunday. That being said I am looking into adding Monday. (so yes, I may stream tonight) Best place to find out when I'm streaming is either Twitter, Instagram, or my Discord. All have links in my bio!
I'm in Australia, and I get most of my Manga from Kinokuniya (based in Sydney). The prices usually aren't too bad (for Australia) and you get discounts if you're a member, plus free shipping over $50
Speaking of tweeting, follow the publishers on tweeter, they love to talk about whats coming out, they are usually the first to say anything, or theyll share other people's reviews on things theyre actively putting out (Looking at you Yen Press) [P.S. Yes Press really does love its community]
I'm really bad at that. I'm keeping my series I only have one or two volumes of together so I remember them but I'm finishing my older or almost complete series first. Finishing naruto will probably be the hardest budget wise.
Hi boogie nice video! Wish i knew a lot of these! Sadly my library isnt open but once this virus goes i will go with my friends and take your idea one day!
if you are starting, take advantage of libraries. A lot of people don't realize that some libraries have manga. If you are planning to get a manga series, you can read it in the library and see if you like it before putting manga into a series and turns out you don't even like it. this is also a good way to new discover manga. if you cannot find a specific manga or you don't have a library near you, some manga companies have and app to get chapters for free such as the Shonen jump app.
Definitely wish I saw this before I started collecting(Jan 2021)! I have realized my errors and doing tons of research concerning pricing! Thank you for making this video !
I am picky with books. Definitely want a good story. I focus on horror, magic and action. I also prefer hardcover collected editions. So that narrow down my manga focus a lot.
For longer series, do check them out at the library (especially if you're more interested in reading them than collecting them) or at least just buy one or two books at first to see if it's up your alley. Forcing yourself to like something that's popular but not your style is a waste of time and money.
Hi! Good video and thank you (and the comments) for the advices! I have started collecting Kimetsu no Yaiba manga since I realized it was being published in my country because it was a manga that I really enjoyed and loved. Also to support the author! Now I want to collect other mangas that I enjoyed and are also published in my country (Tokyo Ghoul, Gokushufudo, Spy X Family, Jujutsu Kaisen) but since I have a limited budget, I decided to buy just the first volume (JJK, Gokushufudo) or buy the volumes that have my favourite arcs or chapters (Tokyo Ghoul:Re 14&16) And definitely it's a expensive hobby... But I am enjoying it a lot even though I don't really have much money! 😆😆
Another thing that I don't think people realize when they're new to any kind of collecting is to not compare your collection to someone else's and think that you need to get this series because someone else has it or that someone has over 500 manga and you only have 50. Everyone starts somewhere and your collection is catered towards you. That was my biggest problem and even now sometimes I'll see someone with over 2000 manga and I get jealous and then I have to remind myself to look at what I have and do I really want certain series because everybody else has them or because I'm actually interested in them. When it comes to getting new volumes for series I'm collecting, I usually look at one of the bookstores' web sites I buy from for the dates and then I write down what I'm interested in on a planner that I have specifically for book releases (manga and regular novels) and then figure out how many of those is possible for me to buy during that month, plus accounting for older volumes that I still need. I don't go on Twitter anymore because it's become so toxic. I don't use Rightstuf because the shipping is outrageous to Canada. The library is a really good way of discovering series you may not have heard of or wasn't sure if you wanted to read it. When I first started collecting manga years ago, I always went to the library to read new releases and because I had nothing else to do some summers (I still sometimes went to the library in 2018 and 2019 and then the pandemic happened and now I mostly read ebooks and audiobooks on the Libby app). I remember going there all the time (it was only a 2 minute drive from my old house) and that's how I started reading One Piece (I stopped at vol. 13 and I don't know if I will ever continue since it's so long and I didn't enjoy it enough to continue for so many volumes), I read some Naruto manga, discovered Kitchen Princess, Skip Beat, St. Dragon Girl, etc. Anyways, great tips! As someone who hasn't posted any videos in over a year and just watches random stuff like sometimes I'll watch too 10 lists, sometimes I'll watch lost media videos, I didn't know about the first one.
You can buy box sets for some prominent series like:Tokyo Ghoul,Dragon Ball,Bakuman,Death Note And the cost will be a lot less Btw,Nice Tips Boogie keep up the good work🔥
Started collecting a couple months ago. Right now I’m on a break on buying physical manga cause I found out about shounen jump on viz. $1.99/month and get a crazy backlog of manga lol will be waiting for sales tho wish I knew this earlier lol
Yep. Viz has an incredible deal going on - sort of hard to compete with that. Wise choice & you'll notice I don't collect many series that I can already read with the Viz app :)
@@BoogieSnacks totally agree! I literally just picked up a set of bakuman on offerup for 40bucks the day before i started my membership on viz so I might end up selling them and pick up quintessential quintuplets instead through rightstuf. You been hyping this series a lot 😏
@@UltimatePower01 oh dude im down to sell them. I’m missing chapter 17 though, i read that one digitally. Lemme add you as a friend on discord or somethin if ur interested in them
I suggest buying series in 3’s so that if you like it, you don’t have to wait for the rest and your cart won’t be filled by so many new series that are only the first volume.
If you are just starting out a tip is to not just buy one series and get all volumes at once (Sine you don't know if you are going to like it that much until you tried it) but maybe get 2-3 diffrent series with 3-5 volumes each. This way you can try some diffrent things and se which you enjoy more and then you can get some more volumes of that series.
im from Brazil and im getting my collection better slowly, one thing i woul love to know is about the bulky mangá editions like, sometimes i see death note editions that are rly rly thicc and other mangas too despite it already having the more "thin" verion out..apparently it happend to Black Butler too but i never see anyone talking about where to get them ;-
Now i dont have massive collection, in 4 years of collection i have around 240 or so volumes, did try to make list of expenses but while i can track those i got from Amazon-book depository-wordery, those i got from local bookstores, nope, i eventually gave up on that)
I've started buying manga and I've been buying used very good condition on eBay , that's the best prices I have found , I'd love to get the whole collection of Inuyasha but that's pretty pricey unfortunately
Love the video, btw tokyo ghoul is the first and only series I've bought so far but I'm changing that soon. I'm thinkin bleach 3-1 collection especially since the covers are badass and jujutzu kaisen
I wanted to buy from Book Depository but it just turns out my country is one of the few they don't ship too. And my local bookstore rarely sells the books i want. Plus, there aren't many locals who sells it on Facebook Marketplace. My local public library never has any manga. It seems Ebay is my last resort.
I only started two years ago, but for some amazing reason my volumes didn’t get hit with the yellowing, at the moment im only thinking about finishing demonslayer, and after that starting Evangelion (three in ones) attack on titan, tokyo ghoul, and deathnote.
LED lights don't cause yellowing, so instead of using normal lights in the room that you keep your manga, just use LED lights and keep your manga away from sunlight.
I have been collecting manga for a while and it's really hard to get an exact volume I want I wanted to buy 86 light novels but every time I check the vol I want is out of stock lmao
I'm for sure gonna use those tips! But on the topic of sales, if there is a sale on rightstuf or the big holiday sales, if I get the membership, do I also get more of a discount/Can I also use discount codes with the membership? Anyone know?
Your membership does add onto the existing price for the sale. Discount codes, however, don’t always work. I have a membership and there’s a Kodansha sale right now and both contribute to lowering the price of volumes. I save an additional 36c per book in this sale specifically because of the membership. But they are also labeled with “not eligible for promotional discount” disclaimer. So a code won’t work to lower the prices on those items any further.
Discount codes can be used on the normal everyday membership-discounted prices, unless marked with the “not eligible for promotional discounts” label. It’ll depend from item to item.
Any manga recommendation that has smaller volumes but wholesome, i could go with Shojo or Seinin. Currently finished jojo part 1 and 2 (this will be really expensive). I figured i might take a break from Jojo.
I started collecting exactly 2 years ago and I just recently learn some tips regarding that, but it's never too late. Edit: This video is helpful though. I only buy manga if I have extra money on my hands.
Yes, if you've started collecting two years ago - this video may have some info you may know - but feel free to share helpful insights here in the comment section!
@@BoogieSnacks It was helpful still. There is one thing. I noticed some people don't know how fragile the spine can be and they open the manga up fully, which not only cracks the spine, but can make pages detach from it. I saw this with second hand volumes, especially.
I would like to add that it's ok to not always follow popular opinion of what's good. You don't HAVE to like something simply because it's popular, if you don't like something then you don't like something. Also, don't be afraid to enjoy something that is outside the realms of popularity. Just because it's not of Dragon Ball Z proportions of popularity doesn't mean it's bad, it could just mean that it was (unfortunately) overlooked. I say just try out the first two volumes of a manga before fully investing yourself into it. If you like it, awesome, you found yourself a great manga to read. If you don't like it, then don't force yourself to read it simply because everyone else loves it. Even if you think it's just ok and satisfied with just a few volumes, don't feel like you MUST finish it. Read what you like and want to read, if something peaks your interest then go for it, if it doesn't then just move on and don't bother.
I FINALLY WENT TO JAPAN ✈(first vlog here)

So nice :)
As a 35 year manga collector since the days of Area 88 floppies, I agree with the entire awesome content in both the video itself supplemented by these comments
Here is an important tip from all these years collecting manga:
ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND:
BOTH DARK HORSE (DH) AND VERTICAL manga will undoubtedly/inevitably go out of print (OOP) quick, fast and in a hurry - so, if you are digging any DH or Vertical series, always err on the side of purchasing that series immediately rather than waiting
Of those two though, DH is the King “Worstest”
Whats Your Myanimelist Name? Would Love To Know!
Agreed we need to know
I was literally just thinking that

Barnes & nobles had a 50% off on hardcovers a day after Christmas got there their opening and grab a few books I needed so thankful for that.
YAS MONDAY VIDEO AGAIN!
Haha you know I have been having a weird upload schedule past few weeks but I'm trying to normalize things now
Great video! Btw what days are you streaming on twitch, I haven’t been able to make them lately.
Typically it's shaping up to be Wed. Friday. Sunday.
That being said I am looking into adding Monday. (so yes, I may stream tonight)
Best place to find out when I'm streaming is either Twitter, Instagram, or my Discord. All have links in my bio!
Boogie Snacks Ok cool if you stream tonight I’ll try to make it!
Nice Video, Boogie! Can relate with all of what you are saying in this video
Hey V! Good to see you. Thank you & glad to see you can relate so much
Bro, i realy love how your collection is displayed 👌
Thank you, David!
Another tip would be starting with series that are finished and try not to buy a lot of series at the same time.
I'm really bad at that. I'm keeping my series I only have one or two volumes of together so I remember them but I'm finishing my older or almost complete series first. Finishing naruto will probably be the hardest budget wise.
até recentemente eu cometia esse erro, mas quando a grana aperta, nos tornamos mais seletivos haha
thank you for the tips :3
Thank you for watching, Irene :)
Hi boogie nice video! Wish i knew a lot of these! Sadly my library isnt open but once this virus goes i will go with my friends and take your idea one day!
say my bookshelf is already out of direct sunlight , would adding a curtain to my bookshelf help also
Love the video boogie 😁😁
Thank you, James!
if you are starting, take advantage of libraries.
I use goodreads because I love reading normal books but I will start using it for manga now
Great advice and great channel! Thanks
I try to read/watch the first couple chapters or episodes of a series I’m not familiar with or on the fence about before buying it.
Yeah, I wish I knew about MyAnimeList before watching around 200 anime and reading most that 1000 manga volumes...
great video man I've just recently started getting into manga this is some good tips
This really helps! Thank you
Usually what I do is I read what I have then buy more, I also stick very closely to my budget. I always look for sales and I never buy full price.
IZZI
Boogie my favorite manga yt
Thank You. Great video.
I bought the first 2 volumes of To Your Eternity and it’s really good so far. Also Bleach is very awesome. I recommend it
Nice!
I appreciate this!
Definitely wish I saw this before I started collecting(Jan 2021)! I have realized my errors and doing tons of research concerning pricing! Thank you for making this video !
I am picky with books. Definitely want a good story. I focus on horror, magic and action. I also prefer hardcover collected editions. So that narrow down my manga focus a lot.
hardcover are the best
I started collecting a year ago and I really want to get to know the manga creators here
For longer series, do check them out at the library (especially if you're more interested in reading them than collecting them) or at least just buy one or two books at first to see if it's up your alley. Forcing yourself to like something that's popular but not your style is a waste of time and money.
This was so helpful!
You look like the first evil ex Scott had to fight in Scott Pilgrim Vs the World
lol
Great Video. I got into manga because of my son. I get it at the library. Enjoying One Punch Man.
Planning to buy the oregairu light novel, hells paradise, vinland saga, vagabond, berserk, and tokyo revengers manga
Hi! Good video and thank you (and the comments) for the advices!
I have started collecting Kimetsu no Yaiba manga since I realized it was being published in my country because it was a manga that I really enjoyed and loved. Also to support the author!
Now I want to collect other mangas that I enjoyed and are also published in my country (Tokyo Ghoul, Gokushufudo, Spy X Family, Jujutsu Kaisen) but since I have a limited budget, I decided to buy just the first volume (JJK, Gokushufudo) or buy the volumes that have my favourite arcs or chapters (Tokyo Ghoul:Re 14&16)
And definitely it's a expensive hobby... But I am enjoying it a lot even though I don't really have much money! 😆😆
I’m just starting I just got the first 2 of mha I can’t wait to buy more!
Love this! What days are you streaming on twitch?
Thank you so much 🙏🏼
Love ur list 🤗🤗🤗
You can buy box sets for some prominent series like:Tokyo Ghoul,Dragon Ball,Bakuman,Death Note
And the cost will be a lot less
Btw,Nice Tips Boogie keep up the good work🔥
im going to start collecting my favorite first saiki k
I see those gantz books. Hopefully they do a gantz g omnibus cause gabtz g 1 is hard to find or expensive to buy.
Book depository is owned by Amazon. Also buy manga bags for you manga boogie, it helps with yellowing.
I am just starting a Manga collection and this is so helpful...I already started doing some of these mistakes 😐
@@forSurfingTheNet if you do end up selling bakuman..I’m interested haha
@@UltimatePower01 oh dude im down to sell them. I’m missing chapter 17 though, i read that one digitally. Lemme add you as a friend on discord or somethin if ur interested in them
yup! just started getting into manga and decided to go mostly digital since it tends to be cheaper and this deal is incredible.
A series I recommend is dead pool samurai manga for beginners experts I been colleting for 12 years
I suggest buying series in 3’s so that if you like it, you don’t have to wait for the rest and your cart won’t be filled by so many new series that are only the first volume.
Love you boogie
I’ve just started recently but one big mistake I notice is people just buying in bulk. Read a few chapters online first at least that helps me.
Twitter is perfect for news!! People will talk about stuff with a quickness!
im from Brazil and im getting my collection better slowly, one thing i woul love to know is about the bulky mangá editions like, sometimes i see death note editions that are rly rly thicc and other mangas too despite it already having the more "thin" verion out..apparently it happend to Black Butler too but i never see anyone talking about where to get them ;-
Wow great advice
I have one recommendation. Have you ever heard of a brides story? One of my favorite manga of all time.
I don't mind the yellowing it's gives its a classic old vibe.
Great sharing 😃awesome friend❤️❤️❤️.
I just neeed money that’s my problem now
.
It seems Ebay is my last resort.
one thing i want to add is that we should have money yes yes
Azumanga daioh is amazing...
Levi Guy Started Collecting Manga Bcuz Of You :)
I have been collecting manga for a while and it's really hard to get an exact volume I want I wanted to buy 86 light novels but every time I check the vol I want is out of stock lmao
20 pages of comic in US style = £3.00+
618 pages manga = 3 for £15.00.. Sold XD
@@boysoldier10002 ohh okay that clears things up, i was deciding if i should get the membership. thanks for the help!
Yes your membership discount should apply :)
I just started my collection
boogie: you can go to the library

Muy buenas recomendaciones. Especialmente el de la página para comprar, no todas las páginas que venden mangas en inglés tienen envios a mi país :D
same.
Any manga recommendation that has smaller volumes but wholesome, i could go with Shojo or Seinin. Currently finished jojo part 1 and 2 (this will be really expensive). I figured i might take a break from Jojo.
Silent Voice but it’s kinda gets depressing
