If a series has an anime, I'd highly recommend watching it first before buying a series that you're iffy about! From personal experience, there's so many series I thought I'd like but ended up not liking that much after watching the anime :')
@jolie yes but if you like the anime enough (even with cut out content) there's a high chance that you'll like the manga better! I just said watch the anime first because it's a good way of determining if the manga is something you'd like to spend money on :>
@jolie anime sometimes skip a lot of materials, but manga can also skip details if it's adapted from light novels. the advantage of trying the shorter piece first is that you'll have additional material to enjoy when you pick up the original version. anyway even if you don't want to watch the anime first you can try a couple of episodes, or try a few manga chapters online by fan translators.
I personally love one volume mangas, like absolutely adore them because they give me that satisfaction of “finishing” a series without me actually having to buy a full series
@@freda3854 these are just a few of the ones I own, I haven’t been collecting recently due to lack of money so it’s not a lot. And some of them are quite mature. I included some 2 volume omnibuses. A girl on the shore, the gods lie, cats of the louvre, I had that same dream again (there’s an LN of this one as well), Harus curse (omnibus), sadako at the end of the world, and solanin (omnibus)… I think that’s all I got, but I’m interested in downfall, goodbye eri, look back, the osamu tezuka omnibuses, and of course junji itos stuff as well, etc.
As someone who doesn't have much space but likes to collect manga, I read very long mangas online. And I collect/buy short series instead. Like, Spy x Family, it's pretty short right now so I collect that. Don't bite off more than you can chew.
Thanks for sharing!! That's an amazing and smart way to enjoy manga with limited space. I have regretted starting to collect long series in the past just because of how much money and space it takes up >
I’m in agreement with your goal point. Personally, I only buy manga (and other books) that I think I would enjoy. For novels, I buy the first one if it’s a series, and I usually give manga a 3 volume chance before I decide if it’s my thing or not. That usually works for me!
Same, at first I was only interested in MHA because my friends were but when I started to watch the anime from the second season onwards, I was hooked. I’m not one for liking stuff that is similar to the Marvel movies but MHA is the first one I like, currently I own 2 of the spin-off volumes as it’s shorter + they haven’t got an anime and in my opinion it fills in the gaps of some of the characters like Stain. I am someone who is highly intimidated by larger mangas (like Haikyuu) but does own some yet has no plans to buy the full series until moving away to somewhere that sells the books cheaper and where there will be more room for me.
I didn't know that buying a complete manga series when you didn't read it first was a thing :0 To me, the only volumes that make me happy to own are the ones that I've already read online or watched the anime of them, my favorite series are the ones I love to collect! And I tend to purchase them 2 by 2 and every now and then, not that often. So I don't really have problems with the money, plus they are cheaper in my country. As for keeping track of my collection, I use an app from the play store, they sure are useful. My only problem is that I tend to start new collections before completing the others, because my priorities change quickly.
"Make sure to evaluate how much space you have to put your manga" Me, with random piles of books and manga all over my room because I ran out of bookshelf space: 🧍yes, that-
Yeah same, I thought the little shelf in my room at my parents’ apartment would be enough when I started collecting but then everything went overboard…. When I moved out a while ago (to a rather small apartment) I bought a billy shelf from ikea which did me wonders at the time since it fit my already bought manga perfectly but now it’s filled and there’s like 0 space for a second bookshelf in the whole apartment.
i would say (as a pretty recent manga collector) you should try and read a manga online first before you make the decision to physically collect the series (you don’t have to read the whole thing online, just until a point where you make the decision to purchase it physically or not)
As someone who wants to collect mangas but has none so far this is really useful so thank you!! Also btw I wanted to collect mangas I really like or the ones I think I’ll really really enjoy…..and tbh I personally have no interest in collecting every vol. of the mangas I want to collect idk y lol. I’m just interested in buying a couple of my fav volumes or like random volumes from every manga I wanna collect.
When I was younger I did that because I didn't have a whole lot to spend on volumes, I bought them more for the cover art/how the spine looked on my shelf. Whatever way you wanna collect is the right way. 💙
If u want to buy less volumes at a time, I'd advise to look into short series n one volume mangas. Some are pretty good and worthwhile especially when they're cheaper than a 10+ volume series n easier to maintain the space. Not to mention you would be reading more stories well contained in length with a conclusion instead of waiting for long ongoing series.
Here’s another tip that I learnt from my own mistake! If u are buying from Amazon or even in store sometimes, double check which language it is in. I accidentally bought volumes 3, 4 and 5 of Blue Flag in German because I didn’t double check. I can’t read German so I had to give them to a friend. ALWAYS a double check!
I own some japanese mangas, and i didn't know japanese (and it only have in this language), so i use google lens 😂 and i like to change the context sometimes LOL
Made the same mistake 😭 I have 9 & 16 of Assassination Classroom in German and 5 in French. I have the whole series in English now luckily 🙏 (besides 22 and 23 as those weren't translated)
Another tip I’m not sure if she put in the video is that more series isn’t better. That probably doesn’t make sense but when I started collecting I made the mistake of buying multiple series without completing them. Do not do this. I recommend starting off with one series, completing that one and then starting another. I’m saying this because I have yet to finish any one of the ones I have because I have to keep deciding which series I want to expand when I’m on a tight budget. Unless you just pick up a volume when you see it, I think this is a really good tip. now i see that she did put this in the video but ill still keep it here :)
I have been collecting manga since September 2020 and my collection has slowly been growing since then. Here's my list of my collection: [COMPLETED] • Fruits Basket: Collectors Edition (Completed) • Dreamin' Sun (Completed) • Orange (Completed) • Solanin (Completed) • The Promised Neverland (Completed) • A School Frozen in Time (Completed) • I want to eat your pancreas • Ouran High School Host Club (Box Set) • Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (Box Set) • A Silent Voice (Completed) • Neon Genesis Evangelion (Completed) • Carole and Tuesday (Completed) • SpyxFamily (Completed) • CLANNAD [クラナド] (Completed) • Erased (Completed) • Horimiya (Completed) • Ao Haru Ride (Completed) • Love me, Love me not (Completed) • Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku (Completed) • Kamisama Kiss (Completed) [Not Completed] • A Sign of Affection (Not Completed, still Ongoing) • Toradora (Not Completed) • Perfect World (Not Completed) • Futaribeya: A room for two (Almost Completed) • To Your Eternity (Not Completed) • Waiting for Spring (Not Completed) • Yona of the Dawn (Almost Completed) Manga series I plan on getting in the future: • K-On!!: The Complete Omnibus Collection • Tokyo Ghoul (Box Set) • Tokyo Ghoul:Re (Box Set) • SpyxFamily volume 8 • Shadow's House
I recommend reading Natsume YuujinChou. It’s a slice of life, supernatural story of a boy who can see yokai but the stories are emotionally compelling and character development driven.
One of the biggest mistakes I made is not flipping through the pages of my manga when I buy them because I bought 3 haikyuu mangas in the wrong language and by the time I relised it was too late to return them 😂🤦♀️ I was so annoyed because with that money I could of used it buy a different manga series or other things like new clothes 😭
Space is honestly something I didn’t consider when I started my manga collection in Japan 😥 Back at home I had plenty of space for my bookshelf’s and managed to accumulate over 600 volumes but now I’m struggling with the 200 I have 🥺 Manga in Japan is really cheap (especially second hand) so I tend to buy way too many without thinking about space 🥲 Yet that didn’t stop me from ordering 36 new volumes this week 🤣
@@Blooable I might have to make a video on how I collect manga 🤔 but yes, it’s all 3 of those and probably more 😂 I literally break all of those rules she’s mentioned 😅
@@atlastnicole Sure you won't regret that in the future? XD Oh well. I guess even if you do, you could always just sell them and get some of your money back anyway.
@@scionsilverbeat8149 yeah, I don’t regret it. My collection is the best it’s ever been since I first started collecting. I had to redo my manga collection multiple times (sell and rebuy manga). But yeah, if I somehow ever get tired of it (pretty sure I won’t since I’ve been doing this for 10 years) I’ll just sell it lol
@@atlastnicole I see. That's good. I've been collecting novels for 6 years now but lately I've been wanting to sell a good amount of them. It's overwhelming having so many and now I just want to minimally keep only any series I'm obsessed with. Which is why ever since I slowly started collecting manga as well, I've already just been sticking to a small number in comparison. But then again, like you said, you have actually sold your series throughout the years. So it makes sense that you can still keep it at its best even if you buy anything at every turn XD
As someone with 666 volumes of manga (not on purpose, it’ll be 670 next week), I agree with all these points. Budgeting, space and realistic goals (collecting for you, not for internet brownie points) are probably the biggest things to always keep in mind if you’re buying/collecting manga. Budgeting especially is the one to watch out for because you can easily spend 200-300 dollars in a single sitting if you aren’t careful. Setting a monthly limit and building from that can really help you, especially in the start.
Over the last 15 years I’ve been collecting I developed a lot of the things you talked about here! I never really wrote down a goal or anything but I just bought what I loved reading and tried to complete those series first and then start others. I mostly read shoujo as well, but I’m starting to branch out into more fantasy type series. Keep the vids coming, I love this kind of content and can’t get enough.
I’ve been collecting manga for about six years now and it was always just for the sheer joy that a series brought to me but I really like the idea of setting a goal for yourself with your collection I never really thought of that.
when i first started collected i always felt like i had to buy from rightstuf or other online retailers for the deals n bc everyone else was doing it. but imo buying online isn’t always the best option, i think it can lead to overconsumption n buying more then u would bc of the deals, rather then rlly enjoying a series (then having to deal w unhauling it). where as irl bookstores, have benefits of quality checking manga, easier return policies, (sometimes) convenience, discovering new things n also allowing to read beforehand. to each there own but great video lol :-D
I definitely prefer bookstores for first volumes and new releases. For collectors editions and completing a series I like online more. Everyone should definitely sit & think what they have access to as well as their own buying habits to pick the best to buy for them.
I tend to buy second hand, especially series no longer in serialisation, so I just go on ebay or amazon's second hand options and choose the cheapest with the best description of the manga condition. It saves a lot of money cause I had manga were I've spent a couple pounds and some that were pennys. I also preorder recent series from amazon cause they tend to lower the price and when it releases you pay the lowest price it was at. It saved me loads of money on getting Berserk Deluxe Editions.
I would love to be able to go in store to quality check manga, but sadly I don't have any stores near me that do sell manga. ;-; So I have to resort to purchasing online as it is the only way for me to actually get manga. D:
I loved your tips, I think it is really important to take a moment to think, and to search on us deeper so we can see clearly what series are we gonna buy or what do we want to do with our collections. I have been collecting manga for 5 years and as you said I wish I had knew a lot of this tips. Can't wait to see the second part! ❤️💗
I've found myself collecting multiple series, and getting sad I only purchased one volume of some of the series at a time. This is different since I haven't read much manga at first, and I was just making sure I liked the series. Anyway, I just want to say I agree! Don't try to keep collecting all your series at once. Pick the ones you always wish you'd bought more of to continue the story. It also seems to make me feel more joy in reading, since you don't have to wait until you get your hands on the next copy.
I’ve accidentally bought duplicate books before! Not fun when you know you had books on your list you do need! But I ended up giving my extra volumes to a friend. So not a total loss if they want them. ☺️
This video and the editing is so cute! Elevating the back row on your shelf is GENIUS! Wish I would’ve thought of that when my collection was larger. Great vid! 😁
i definitely want to start manga collecting and this is helping a lot! ive started small so far since its rlly expensive but im excited to continue and build my collection :)))
The space one is a big one. I stopped collecting manga for a while due to lack of space, but I missed it so much :( I still don't have space for any more bookshelves BUT I am storing my manga neatly in secure plastic storage boxes, and that's an alternate option for those who don't have space! It's not as pretty as being able to see them on the shelves though.
For me (english is not my first language) 1) I don’t buy everyone manga that I like, for me to buy its needs to be special for me. 2)If its not a short series I only buy the volumes that are my fave 3)If you didn’t watch the anime always read the first 2 vols before buying it 4)Before buying think about it for a few days.Every time I want to buy a manga, I think about it for a few days and sometimes I end up not wanting to buy so it help me a lot. 5)Learn how to hold yourself. Basically don’t buy every manga you like, even if you want the manga so much still think about how much space u have, think about if for a few days before buying it and don’t end up buying more manga then you need.
Personally for me a box set takes out the fun of collecting, i like going to a store and buying one or two new volumes and reading them before going on! It's feels nice to buy something new and get excited instead of burning myself out by collecting all and then reading
as someone who has quite a lot of manga and 2 shelves, i really recommend a bookcase if possible!! or the type that go on your wall. If you get shelves and don’t have that many hard copies, your books might fall off (mine fall off a lot when I try take one out or I’m just moving them about) - they’re really helpful
Wow! seeing Ultra Maniac in your shelf made me super happy for some reason. I'd gotten the first volume from my sister years ago and always wanted to read more of it, but seeing as I am much younger the she was at the time she'd gotten the book I was never able to find them in stores. It's nice to see that someone else has it.
So far, I only have 6 Junji Ito books, Doubt, the first 2 volumes of Judge (seeing if I want to commit) and some that my husband passed to me. I really appreciate this video, and I think it will especially help newer collectors, because you get this excitement and way too much energy about collecting. I almost bought all of Chainsaw Man while ordering Doubt vol 2 and some Ito, and I luckily stopped myself, like breathe. Think about this. There's no rush
I started reading manga back in the school library and started buying some for myself with my friends and so I've been collecting manga since 2016 I believe! Getting manga recommendation from friends have been a really great way for me to start my collection! If I had an advice to give a begginer it would be to only purchase the manga that makes you happy and not just for the sake of having the popular series that everyone talks about, take your time and enjoy
I went from a big collection of anything-I-could-get-my-hands-on, to having a small collection of series I adore and love to re-read on a regular. Now every time I look at my manga shelf it makes me giddy.
both me and my friend collect manga and we often share volumes. we have this unspoken rule that we wont buy any manga the other person has. we often just think of our manga collection as shared, and this helps massively with storage.
Thank you so much for these tips. I feel a little at ease now cause at the beginning of collecting it definitely felt like a lot but after organizing and knowing what a want, it feels great to be collecting manga. And I know it shouldn’t matter but hearing it’s your collection not someone else’s really helped me remember what I truly want so thank you for that too💜💜
Actually these are good tips for any type of home library. As for manga, if I ever have the chance in my country I would only buy copies of completed manga I already love and would want to reread a few years later. Also I usually stick to a two volume rule - if I don't enjoy it then drop it - but the type of manga I love is slice-of-life fantasy so that might be a factor in helping me pick faster.
Great video and tips! I’m just thinking of taking the plunge re manga but I already collect video games and just to say for people starting a collection of anything this list works just as well!
Thanks for the video! I kinda recently started collecting manga, and something important I forgot to think of is the space! I have shelves in my room but I use it for personal stuff, and I had to sacrifice 2 whole shelves for my manga, meaning I had to clean out those shelves, throw some things out, etc. But my dad said he was gonna help me out by putting little shelves on the wall, so it won’t take to much space on the floor! But thanks for the vid, I, myself learned a few things, even if I’m not really new to manga collecting😅
Looking for manga you like at your library is such a good tip and I wish more people talked about it! I've been able to read so many good series through my library entirely for free. Many libraries also have an inter-library loan system that lets you reserve books from other libraries, so if your local branch doesn't have a manga you're looking for, another one in your area might! And many also have digital manga available that you can check out and read on your phone/tablet/laptop. It's great! Perfect for deciding if you want to collect a series too, since it gives you a chance to check stuff out without having to spend any money.
your tips really do help! i think its wise to have esp goals, because its smt that u need to hv in order to make sure u can plan for the long run. thanks for the video! ur amazing
thanks RUclips to have recommended me this video! I really liked all the tips you gave us. I have actually collected manga since I was 7 y.o. (my first one was Kilari Revolution!) and during these years I bought both interesting manga and boring ones. The ones I didn't like I sold them to friends or to second-hand shops in my city. I usually buy complete used series to save money and also I don't buy manga that have an anime adaptation, so I don't spoil me anything!
I'm always tempted to buy whatever manga I see in people's collections just because, but now I've had time to think about the direction I'd like to go :-) Like you suggested, I'm only going to collect a few series that I love dearly. Most of them are mainstream, but that's okay
This is absolutely wonderful, thank you so much for sharing!! That’s an amazing mindset to have :) And mainstream series are honestly so good, I have no shame collecting those too haha :) And you’re doing so amazing with Demon Slayer and AOT!!! I really need to get on those haha
A tip that I use is to keep the publisher or distributor in mind! For example, I had an older Tokyopop series of Tokyo Mew Mew, but I unhauled it and purchased the Kodansha two in one instead because that had a much more accurate translation and I've found that some of the pages have fallen out of my older Tokyopop manga. Likewise, if I'm on the fence about purchasing something, I'm much more likely to purchase it if it's distributed by Seven Seas because they generally tend to pick up the sort of series I like (re-releases of classic 1970s manga, good one-volume series, etc.)
Thank you so much for creating such a well thought out video with such amazing information! I just started collecting manga and already picked up on a few of the advice you share but there was so much I DIDNT know :) I appreciate you! 💗👍🏼 Part 2 please !
A larger collection to me is a better one because it is filled of more manga I am interested at! Collect responsibly :3 And I track my manga in a similar way, only with a little more complexity. That works for me just fine. I also have a mixed what to buy next and budget sheet.
I recently got into Manga. I’ve been reading American comics for 32 years but never jumped into manga. I agree that a collection goal is essential. FOMO can really threaten one’s enjoyment of a hobby. I’ve even taken to calling myself a comics reader and curator instead of a collector.
I think my favorite in my collection is Chrono Crusade... Had to wait almost 2 years for the last volume to come out in the US but man is it still one of my top treasures :)
What I do is I read the manga online first n if I enjoyed it enough (and can afford it along with the space it'll occupy), I'd get it. That or I like the anime well enough n the manga fits the criteria (price n space). I'd also advise to search for very short or one volume mangas. They're more affordable in quantity, space n even quality of their story that would be an awesome leisure read n not having to wait to read the next volume. My collection is pretty small but I know I like them well enough to keep My collection currently includes: 1. Tokyo Ghoul n RE Box sets 2. Vagabond Deluxe volume 1-5 3. Banana Fish Vol 1-3 4. Inside Mari Vol 1-2 5. Happiness Vol 1 6. Hellsing Deluxe volume 1 7. Boogiepop 1 & 2(Light Novel) 8. Bakemonogatari book 1 (Light Novel)
I’d love a video on using manga protection. Like those plastic wraps or protective book covers. Like where/how to buy and putting them on, if you notice a difference with them on or without. That type of thing.
I just started reading/buying manga like 3 weeks ago (The Promised Neverland) & this video is really helpful & has some great tips I’m definitely going to implement
I have summarized your tips, hope you enjoy: 1. Setting goals: set direction on the collection (what manga to get). 2. Collecting is expensive: the price of manga in some places are not cheap (saving money for manga as a hobby). 3. Make sure you have space: take a lot of your personal space both physically and mentally (make sure to evaluate how much space you have and how much space you are willing to give up to put your manga there). 4. Start slow: if you think you like the manga, then go for it (think through before making purchase, especially the manga with a lot of volumes). 5. Track your collection: make sure to not buy duplicates since it will be a waste of money (e.g. have an excel or google sheets for tracking). 6. Prioritize series: purchase the series that you really want and will enjoy reading. 7. Don’t be afraid of unhauling: it’s okay to sell/donate some manga that you purchased and purchase other manga that you think is worth being on your shelf. 8. Where to buy manga: search and look around for the most cost-effective shops to purchase (online or physical stores whichever give you the best offers). 9. Look for box sets/sets: most of the series which are sold in bundles/sets tend to be cheaper than when you buy them separately, mostly the used manga are cheaper and more cost-effective (make sure to do some research whether the stores that you want to make purchases have the series that comes in sets). On the other hand, make sure you think carefully of purchasing long series which can cost a lot to purchase all of the volumes. 10. How to maintain manga: put the manga in the best environment possible so that they won’t become yellow, wrinkly, and old (no direct sunlight, make sure the room is cool and not too humid, or use plastic sleeves if possible). 11. Have fun with collecting!: there is no right or wrong in collecting manga, make sure that it brings you happiness and joy.
As someone who has been collecting since 2016, I highly recommend being patient. I love my collection of over 60 titles, but I had to wait years for it to all come together (still collecting obviously) My collection is almost 100% thrifted from local shops- the only exceptions are 6 mangas spread out across the years I usually get one new one a year. So if your on a budget, go for whatever you can snag at a discount! Iv'e found so many wonderful series that way, once a bookstore was going out of business and I got a bag of manga for only 5$!
I spy that Gakuen Alice at 11:00!!!! That was the first series I started buying before I realized it was never fully released in English. My biggest tip when collecting older manga is to make sure it had a full release! Otherwise you’ll be like me and have series that will never be complete!
A lot of the manga you shown I've seen at the library! Might borrow instead of buy since this video made me realise I'm not interested in 'collecting' at all, just reading really but I'm a bit fed up of reading on a screen :)
Most importantly just have fun collecting! Its also not a competition. Don't compare your collection to others! Collect what you like and also make sure TO READ YOUR MANGA!
Oh I'm definitely guilty on falling for some of the traps you mentioned lol, one advice I'm really taking into account is focusing on a few series before buying for a lot of new ones, it can be exciting and addicting to start a new series but that only makes your collection full of just slices of stories, better to focus on a few you really like. Now when there are some sales I try to catch up on more volumes of a few i wanna complete so i get some volumes I'm missing. Keeping up with a series as it comes out is a thing too, I'd only recommend this for ones you truly can't wait to read, otherwise you can't take advantage of sales for example and have to pay full price everytime, it's the best way to support the product and artists of course if you really care.
When i buy a new series and start reading i feel like i need to finish it and collect all the volumes Right now i have: alice in murderland (12v complete) my hero academia ( 28v) Jujutsu kaisen ( 11v) Black butler (11v put on hold since 2018) The promised neverland (12v currently reading it) Beaststars ( 2v New series i started but i chose to finish tpn first)
I originally started collecting series I loved the anime for, it was a way to get even more detail and love for stories I already felt strong feelings towards. Even the fact I own manga whether I read all of them or not feels incredibly calming, it makes me feel like there is always something to look forward too. I recently bought the entirety of The Drifting Classroom in the new hardcover set, and I don't think I have ever felt more rewarded for reading a series, there is something amazing about a story being told on paper, in which you get to visualize and become so invested in. Manga truly is the most valuable kind of art to me.
I've been collecting books my whole life but only started collecting manga when my boyfriend and I moved in together a few months ago because he got me into reading manga. Our collection is very small and only covers one shelf but I'm really happy with it because each one is a favorite of either one or both of us. For example we both love Jujutsu Kaisen so those volumes are right in the center of the shelf to show off, but then he also has stuff like Chainsaw Man on his side and I have Mob Psycho on mine.
When I started collecting I mainly chose series that I couldn't finish reading online (free translations stopped since the actual translation came out). Then I chose to only collect series that I absolutely love and will love for the rest of my life (while some series have fallen out of this category, most of them I have read at least 10 times already! xD) Haven't bought any new volumes now for at least 4-5 years but recently got into it again and determined to at least finished the series that I started collecting many years ago :3
Thank you so much for the video! it was very informative and it indeed does help me out with how I am getting my manga and how to organize and take care of it. I saw that Deadman Wonderland is part of your collection, it is my favorite series ever and also the first series I ever physically collected, I hope you are enjoying or enjoyed it, it's a masterpiece of a story to me😄
i’ve been collecting since i was like…7? half of my collection is from back then, and the other half is high school--college. i only buy manga now if it’s one of my favorite series, i like it but there’s no scanlation group for it, it’s special to me in some way, it’s a childhood favorite, or i know there will be some sort of scarcity/it’s almost out of print so i might miss out if i don’t get it soon. i have a few of my favorites on hold because they’re either too long or might be getting a special edition (slam dunk), or they’re not finished and will probably remain in print for a while (golden kamuy and spy x family). or they’re just not in english… (blue sky complex, yuureitou) so i have: favorites: our dreams at dusk, nabari no ou, vagabond, blue period, witch hat atelier, sasaki and miyano like what i’ve read but has no scan group: boys run the riot (almost a fav), our not so lonely planet travel guide special to me: chainsaw man, my brother’s husband, sailor moon, sue & tai-chan childhood favorites: happy happy clover, chi’s sweet home, pokémon adventures FOMO: the poe clan, antique bakery, also planet travel guide and sorta slam dunk favorites that i only have the first few volumes of: slam dunk, golden kamuy a series i want that is not a favorite but is kind of special to me is tomo-chan because i had never thought i would like it but it made me laugh out loud every few pages. and seven seas does it so i can’t trust it to stay in print for very long…
Amazing video! The only bullet point here is relative to yellowing. Don’t stress. There are a few basic things you can do to help prevent it, but the paper is pure junk and volumes will all wear and yellow a bit.
This is also kind of self explanatory but make sure you enjoy reading. I have seen so many people invest so much money into beginning the manga collecting hobby and then realize they didn’t enjoy reading as much as watching and waste their time and money.
!! THIS is so important! Definitely crucial, yet overlooked by people who are still unsure if they truly enjoy manga collecting >< thank you so much for sharing this!
As a kid its hard for me to collect manga :'( so i kinda collect manga that has 7-8 volumes, when I've finished that series I go for stuff like demon slayer, one punch man etc.
I'm new to your channel and brand new to Manga, even though I've been an anime fan for many years. My goal is just a collection of most favorite anime series that I want to read. Also wouldn't mind to get a manga with beautiful artwork. I have read manga online before, and have digital copies of my faves. Thanks for the tips, I hope you do make a part 2 with extra tips.
I'm avid collector of light novels. Always love reading books. But your idea for using Google sheet to keep track of all your volumes is so smart. Definitely gonna use this. Thanks! 😊
I’ve gotten into mangas collecting (I have about 40 rn, yes I do have a job) I’d say that if you want to collect manga do it especially if you have some extra money. What I do is have a whole list of manga (one shots and whole series) and I check off the ones I have so that I can buy them when they’re at a good price. Now my problem is my space. I use to be a figure collector and I’m not struggling to find space for both my collections (I’ve limited myself to only a few figures per series. I use to have like 4 per character). I’m someone who’s collection started as horror but I needed a mental break and bought some more light hearted ones and now I’m shooting for a complete collection of multiple genres (from certain artists/authors)
Okay here’s a tip nobody has mentioned so my manga collection has one genre which is action since I like the genre action I didn’t have to sell my books. So I suggest you stick with one genre you like.
Thank you for these tips! I hope to buy a whole bookshelf of manga in the future.. These tips really helped, I really like the tip at 5:27! It's going to help me a lot.
I could never imagine selling my least favorite series. I’m more of a collector who, yes buys ones they are interested in but if I didn’t like it I’d still probably finish the series eventually. I hate walking away from things
I usually buy box sets of mass amounts of manga on my birthday , x-mas or a Holliday when I'm gifted money or items, But if I have pocket money or anny savings through out months I would buy 1-2 mangas from large series. Keep in mind that I am only a teen so I don't have a job or rent and I get gifted all of this money so I'm carefree when it comes to affording these things but for others or the futer maybe yourself it could be a issue^-^
A hot tip for manga collecting: don’t aim for complete sets of any major shonen jump series unless you’re planning to make SJ ALL you’re collecting. Also, instead of blind buying, consider trying out new series you’re interested in using free or cheaper options like the library, online subscription services, previewing in the bookstore, etc before buying.
I like your point about going to stores, I actually do that with new series I become curious about when I want to grow my collection. Sometimes if it's a long series I tend to make I try to read a volume online or so to see if I have hesitations or not. Thank you this was a very useful video for restarting collecting after a long time.
I’ve trimmed down my manga collection considerably by getting rid of a lot of the long running shonen series that i had. Now I mostly collect deluxe editions of manga series
I just said watch the anime first because it's a good way of determining if the manga is something you'd like to spend money on :>
@jolie anime sometimes skip a lot of materials, but manga can also skip details if it's adapted from light novels. the advantage of trying the shorter piece first is that you'll have additional material to enjoy when you pick up the original version. anyway even if you don't want to watch the anime first you can try a couple of episodes, or try a few manga chapters online by fan translators.
ide say watching the first few episodes is a great idea! but whenever I start buying a series i’ve already watched I find it really boring
@@TheBestUFC I usually leave some time before I buy the physical copies or buy the volume that the anime left off, I feel you tho
i always just read 1-5 chapters of the manga and if i like it i buy it
I personally love one volume mangas, like absolutely adore them because they give me that satisfaction of “finishing” a series without me actually having to buy a full series
I totally agree!! They’re so nice and satisfying to both read and collect :))
could you list some?

I have regretted starting to collect long series in the past just because of how much money and space it takes up >
@@mangatama Well, at least you learned from your mistake! Your collection is stunning
Same
I’m in agreement with your goal point.
My only problem is that I tend to start new collections before completing the others, because my priorities change quickly.
which country
i do this as well, I only buy two each week or every two weeks

"Make sure to evaluate how much space you have to put your manga"
Me, with random piles of books and manga all over my room because I ran out of bookshelf space: 🧍yes, that-
omg same... LOL
I dont have a lot rn so I just put it in a drawer BUT that doesn’t stop it from finding its way on my floor- ✨😃👌
@@StayTiny03 Hanging wall shelves friend
same!!!😂
i would say (as a pretty recent manga collector) you should try and read a manga online first before you make the decision to physically collect the series (you don’t have to read the whole thing online, just until a point where you make the decision to purchase it physically or not)
this is what I do too!!
go to the library, in the manga section there are some good books and maybe ones you want to read so you can try them out
@@isthatawormwildbowreferenc4562 there’s a more variety section of manga online than a library
That’s true but the thing for be is I hate reading manga online because it just doesn’t hit different 😭 so I just read a summery of the manga 🧍♂️
Where can I read them online?
i love your name lmao
@@ns6972 lol Thnx!!
@@Blooable yea Thnx!!🥰

Yeahhh I saw on the VIZ website that it's coming out late this year!! I've already read and collected all 23 volumes and I gotta say, its epik **v**
i’ve been planning to buy a fruba manga. is the artstyle eyecatching?
I recommend reading Natsume YuujinChou. It’s a slice of life, supernatural story of a boy who can see yokai but the stories are emotionally compelling and character development driven.
One of the biggest mistakes I made is not flipping through the pages of my manga when I buy them because I bought 3 haikyuu mangas in the wrong language and by the time I relised it was too late to return them 😂🤦♀️ I was so annoyed because with that money I could of used it buy a different manga series or other things like new clothes 😭
Oh NOOO T-T that sounds so tragic!!! but thank you for sharing ~ I'm sure other people will watch out more after seeing your experience 😭
@@mangatama yeah 💗

Welp time to learn three new languages I guess because personally I wouldn't put those mangas to waste 😭😭 they're expensive asf too
Space is honestly something I didn’t consider when I started my manga collection in Japan 😥 Back at home I had plenty of space for my bookshelf’s and managed to accumulate over 600 volumes but now I’m struggling with the 200 I have 🥺 Manga in Japan is really cheap (especially second hand) so I tend to buy way too many without thinking about space 🥲
Yet that didn’t stop me from ordering 36 new volumes this week 🤣
I’ve been collecting manga for a long time and I pretty much go against all of these tips while collecting LOL great video regardless
What is your method if you don't mind me asking. Do you just buy stuff that is cheap or has a pretty cover or whatever you are feeling that day?
Keep the vids coming, I love this kind of content and can’t get enough.
i just recently started buying mangas starting from fist of north star
I’ve been collecting manga for about six years now and it was always just for the sheer joy that a series brought to me but I really like the idea of setting a goal for yourself with your collection I never really thought of that.
when i first started collected i always felt like i had to buy from rightstuf or other online retailers for the deals n bc everyone else was doing it. but imo buying online isn’t always the best option, i think it can lead to overconsumption n buying more then u would bc of the deals, rather then rlly enjoying a series (then having to deal w unhauling it). where as irl bookstores, have benefits of quality checking manga, easier return policies, (sometimes) convenience, discovering new things n also allowing to read beforehand. to each there own but great video lol :-D
i agree i prefer bookstores way more. it helps keeps me in check with the prices lol
I would love to be able to go in store to quality check manga, but sadly I don't have any stores near me that do sell manga. ;-;
So I have to resort to purchasing online as it is the only way for me to actually get manga. D:
i would love too but we don't have any manga store here :((
Manga collecting is so addictive! Thanks for the helpful guide to avoid pitfalls ♥
I think this is a great idea for a video!
I’ve accidentally bought duplicate books before! Not fun when you know you had books on your list you do need! But I ended up giving my extra volumes to a friend. So not a total loss if they want them. ☺️
I’m only collecting One Piece for now and I’m buying the 3in1 volumes. Which are $15 each, which is cheaper of what I’ve seen.
This video and the editing is so cute! Elevating the back row on your shelf is GENIUS! Wish I would’ve thought of that when my collection was larger. Great vid! 😁
I just started collecting, and have been buying the Haikyuu manga, so I'm really happy you made this video when you did.
Thank you so much for this video! I've decided to finally buy my fav manga series and the bundle tip helped me a lot!
i definitely want to start manga collecting and this is helping a lot! ive started small so far since its rlly expensive but im excited to continue and build my collection :)))
That's actually really smart
@@yoshikagekira7343 It's actually really good you can fit a lot inside of one plastic storage box :D
I found it to be more helpful!
For me (english is not my first language)
1) I don’t buy everyone manga that I like, for me to buy its needs to be special for me.
2)If its not a short series I only buy the volumes that are my fave
3)If you didn’t watch the anime always read the first 2 vols before buying it
4)Before buying think about it for a few days.Every time I want to buy a manga, I think about it for a few days and sometimes I end up not wanting to buy so it help me a lot.
No one is going to say anything about how perfect & cute her handwriting is?
as someone who has quite a lot of manga and 2 shelves, i really recommend a bookcase if possible!! or the type that go on your wall.
Ahhhh so many great tips!! legit every new collector could get some good info in here!!
Thank you so so much!! Means a lot to me hearing this from another fellow collector!!
I would recommend reading the first few chapters and if you like it enough, you can start collecting it!
Another tip, look at manga online to read a bit before buying like ive done for oshi no ko and tbhk
both me and my friend collect manga and we often share volumes. we have this unspoken rule that we wont buy any manga the other person has. we often just think of our manga collection as shared, and this helps massively with storage.
that's so amazing!!! that's such a smart idea :)) having friends who collect manga is truly a blessing!
Im glad i read yr comment. Imma share my collection with my sister now
Thank you so much for these tips. I feel a little at ease now cause at the beginning of collecting it definitely felt like a lot but after organizing and knowing what a want, it feels great to be collecting manga. And I know it shouldn’t matter but hearing it’s your collection not someone else’s really helped me remember what I truly want so thank you for that too💜💜
Part 2 please! This is so beautiful and worth it to watch.
It's great! Perfect for deciding if you want to collect a series too, since it gives you a chance to check stuff out without having to spend any money.
your tips really do help! i think its wise to have esp goals, because its smt that u need to hv in order to make sure u can plan for the long run. thanks for the video! ur amazing
thank you so so much yuu for watching and your support
Thank you, this is very helpful!❤ Btw your voice is very calming
thanks RUclips to have recommended me this video!
Part 2 please !
A larger collection to me is a better one because it is filled of more manga I am interested at! Collect responsibly :3
And I track my manga in a similar way, only with a little more complexity.
My collection is pretty small but I know I like them well enough to keep
My collection currently includes:
1. Tokyo Ghoul n RE Box sets
2. Vagabond Deluxe volume 1-5
3. Banana Fish Vol 1-3
4. Inside Mari Vol 1-2
5. Happiness Vol 1
6. Hellsing Deluxe volume 1
7. Boogiepop 1 & 2(Light Novel)

This really helps cause I’m actually starting manga collecting
ahh tysm i’ve been collecting for abt 2 years now but i didnt know about the humidifier one !! glad i watched this cuz i was abt to buy one 😭
I have summarized your tips, hope you enjoy:
Your tips were really helpful to me!
I also love ur videos btw :3
This advice is really helpful and your right I should set goals for myself lol
A lot of the manga you shown I've seen at the library! Might borrow instead of buy since this video made me realise I'm not interested in 'collecting' at all, just reading really but I'm a bit fed up of reading on a screen :)
Most importantly just have fun collecting! Its also not a competition. Don't compare your collection to others! Collect what you like and also make sure TO READ YOUR MANGA!
yes!! This is great advice~~ Having fun and enjoying your manga is the most important thing!
When i buy a new series and start reading i feel like i need to finish it and collect all the volumes
Right now i have:
alice in murderland (12v complete)
my hero academia ( 28v)
Jujutsu kaisen ( 11v)
Black butler (11v put on hold since 2018)
The promised neverland (12v currently reading it)
Beaststars ( 2v New series i started but i chose to finish tpn first)
I originally started collecting series I loved the anime for, it was a way to get even more detail and love for stories I already felt strong feelings towards.
I saw that Deadman Wonderland is part of your collection, it is my favorite series ever and also the first series I ever physically collected, I hope you are enjoying or enjoyed it, it's a masterpiece of a story to me😄
i’ve been collecting since i was like…7? half of my collection is from back then, and the other half is high school--college. i only buy manga now if it’s one of my favorite series, i like it but there’s no scanlation group for it, it’s special to me in some way, it’s a childhood favorite, or i know there will be some sort of scarcity/it’s almost out of print so i might miss out if i don’t get it soon.
i have a few of my favorites on hold because they’re either too long or might be getting a special edition (slam dunk), or they’re not finished and will probably remain in print for a while (golden kamuy and spy x family). or they’re just not in english… (blue sky complex, yuureitou)
so i have:
favorites: our dreams at dusk, nabari no ou, vagabond, blue period, witch hat atelier, sasaki and miyano
like what i’ve read but has no scan group: boys run the riot (almost a fav), our not so lonely planet travel guide
special to me: chainsaw man, my brother’s husband, sailor moon, sue & tai-chan
childhood favorites: happy happy clover, chi’s sweet home, pokémon adventures
FOMO: the poe clan, antique bakery, also planet travel guide and sorta slam dunk
favorites that i only have the first few volumes of: slam dunk, golden kamuy
a series i want that is not a favorite but is kind of special to me is tomo-chan because i had never thought i would like it but it made me laugh out loud every few pages. and seven seas does it so i can’t trust it to stay in print for very long…
Amazing video!
Definitely crucial, yet overlooked by people who are still unsure if they truly enjoy manga collecting >< thank you so much for sharing this!
this video really helped me :D i recently ordered orange 1 & 2 the plot caught my eye. thanks for the info. :)
Your voice is so soothingg my god. Love that
This video helped me a lot to focus my thoughts on my collection, I really appreciate it. Thanks!
I’m someone who’s collection started as horror but I needed a mental break and bought some more light hearted ones and now I’m shooting for a complete collection of multiple genres (from certain artists/authors)
update i have 172 now :)

Gotta say your handwriting looks good. And Video is really helpful.Thank you!
I can relate so much with these tips. I also love buying novels and I literally have a list of series that i want to buy first! And same with manga!
I wish my hand writing looked that good. Awesome video btw & yes id like a part 2
i just want to fill up my empty shelves with some of my favorite mangas (mainly anime’s i love) since i collect books anyways
A hot tip for manga collecting: don’t aim for complete sets of any major shonen jump series unless you’re planning to make SJ ALL you’re collecting.
Also, instead of blind buying, consider trying out new series you’re interested in using free or cheaper options like the library, online subscription services, previewing in the bookstore, etc before buying.
library best option
I want to collect all of One Piece but I also want to collect series from genres other than shounen
@@person8641 i started one piece from volume 90
@@AshTheDuke You started reading One Piece at volume 90 or you started collecting it from that point?
@@person8641 collecting and i reach episode 115 (home quarantine)
I like your point about going to stores, I actually do that with new series I become curious about when I want to grow my collection. Sometimes if it's a long series I tend to make I try to read a volume online or so to see if I have hesitations or not. Thank you this was a very useful video for restarting collecting after a long time.
Cover image is beautiful
thank you so much for this video! I just started collecting manga and these points are very helpful! Thanks a lot!
Please do make a part 2!!
I’ve trimmed down my manga collection considerably by getting rid of a lot of the long running shonen series that i had. Now I mostly collect deluxe editions of manga series
Please keep upload videos 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 feel so spoil that I get to watch your new video back to back like this !!!!
