I used the Rocktron Replifex and Intellifex together with my ADA MP1. I ran my ADA MP1 in a NS-2 then sent the signal to a Tube Works Realtube II preamp to use a stereo fx loop. My other ADA MP1 rig was in line, using a Multi-valve (Replifex with a tube)and Intellifex. That was my B rig. My A rig used a MosValve. Loved that rig.
Just found your channel. Enjoyed this one! Love my MP-1, which I've had since '88. It has adapted to my changing tonal tastes over the last 30 years and remains a prime element in my signal chain.
I know this vid is old, and I’m on to my AxeIII, but I still have two MP-1’s (modded only with the battery mod), and I love coming back to vids like these to refresh my mind as to how bad-assed these things can be. Thanks Leon!
Watched the video shortly after it was released ... remembered that I desired an ADA MP-1 already some time ago ... went directly looking for some sales after finished watching the video .... found one in great condition and bought it ... now playing for several days and loving it!!! :) What a great preamp! I love your channel! :)
The ADA was designed for greenbacks, all the dudes used it with Furman PQ3 in front, HUSH and BBE in the rear, FET power amps or high-headroom tube amps into G12H30 Celestions.
I opened my ada mp1 up two days ago, its got version 2.01. While looking inside I noticed small bias wheel looking deals, about 4 of them, did some research and the two left furthest of the 4 are for the od1 and od2 preamp tube bias. Major change in the amound of available gain, they where turned all the way down by the previous owner.
Got my ADA MP1 today and all I can say is WOW!! Needless to say I played for a long time after I got it hook up. Still learning my way around it. I did find out that the hum comes from the Master Gain. The lower you take that the less hum you have. This is the first rack unit I have ever owned and so far I am very well pleased with it. Thanks for sharing yours and going through how to get tones. It really helped me when I started messing with mine. I had a basic knowledge of what was going on. My next step is to learn how to store my settings. Again Thanks!!!
I used to have one of those. My first guitar rig ever was an ADA MicroTube 100 with a Rocktron mAXE for distortion into 2 ADA split stack cabinets. I had an ART DR-X for effects. Later on I bought an MP-1 to go with it.
The MP-1 has a built in overdrive circuit. The input goes into a FET buffer (for high impedance) and then through an op-amp based front section that hits the tubes. That has a gain pot that is not accessible from the outside (trimmer pot on the circuit board) . The op-amps in this thing run on +/- 15 V power rails. The programmable OD1 control is basically a volume level out of that front section (not gain).
I used to have an MP-2 with the B200 power amp into a stereo quad with V30s. THe MP-2 was a bit fizzier than the MP-1. So I yanked the first 12AX7 out and replaced it with a 12AT7. Lower gain and really pulled the classic AC/DC tones out of it then. Was a great thing.
I have three MP1s, one with the most current firmware and one with a version or two prior which to me sounds better (1.???) I play with them, they get used then abandoned for a year and a video like this makes me pull it back out lol. I used the settings posted from M. Waegner years ago and although it wasn’t spot on it did get me close but like you said, only Nuno could get that percussive attack and tone we all loved! I also used a BBE 462 to give the presence and bottom end some weight but the tone is all what you want or need! Your tone sounds killer! Is it stock? Great tone you have and here is the supposed “mythical ’ settings from that MW forum chat: Overdrive 1 : 4.0 dist Overdrive 2 : 5.5 dist Master Gain : 7.5 dist Bass : 12 Mid : 6 Treb : 6 Pres : 12 Voicing : .tube FX loop : off From the ADA it went into the McIntosh 2100 (transistor) poweramp and from there into a vintage Marshall 4x12 cab with the original G12H inside. At that time I normally used Fostex M11RP ribbon mics and Countryman Lavalier mics through a John Hardy M1 to record guitar.”
Great! I just bought an mp-1 unit. Would you mind sharing the settings for both 80s and modern? What pickups are in your Hamer and les Paul? Also is this the standard way you mic your v30s for all your sounds? Do you have a video on micing the speaker? Awesome videos!
Can you explain how you conect the ADA to the Amp? I saw people conecting in the Return of loop fx of the amp but mine sounds better if I conect it on the Imput of the amp, exist any trick about this or something wrong with mine?
Hey Leon love the rack videos. It would be cool if you did a video on how to set up a rack gear with multiple preamps. There’s not to many videos on how to do it.
Sounds great 👍🏽 burn me at the stake, but I thought the flat eq sound you played at the beginning sounded pretty good 😬 “less scratchy” but hey, could be the device I’m viewing your video on.
@@ameer_saban That flat sound, with a hint of the treble and presence boost, would give that awesome fat Lukather's tone on Kingdom of Desire (I am one lucky person who got an ADA MP-1 3 weeks ago!) :D
Haha, I was going to say am I the only one who preferred the flat eq at the beginning:) that was a solid rock tone right there, early Priest or Def Leppish Marshall sound!🤘
......man. I regret selling my MP-1 when I moved to the dual rec back in the day. It's tough to justify getting one when the Kemper can cover a lot of that space. I still miss it though.
@@LeonTodd Very much! I was told its all still the original tubes and everything. I noticed there's a distinct familar hum that you get even with humbuckers just before you roll off the guitar volume knob (similar like mine). Is that level of hum a 'normal' and accepted trait for the original MP-1?

Heeey, I actually bought one, wanna run it through a cab sim pedal! Do you happen to remember the master gain value? Or maybe you still have it in the saved presets on the unit... Mine came as "broken" for less about 50$, but there was a misplaced the ribbon connector under of the main board. Its output A works and the output B gives some white noise, I'm fine with one output at the moment :-) Thanks for the ad!
Whoa dood. that sounds damn uber rad sickness! You're killing it! I got some major envy going on. Have you tried the new Ada's like the Mp1 Channel or the PP1? Yes, OD1 balances your pickups. But that's a stupid design because you don't want to reprogram a dozen presets just because you plugged in a different guitar. Over 10 years ago,I hacked an input gain knob into my MP-1. What that does is "export" the OD-1 internal trim pot to the outside of the chassis. With that you can easily match pickup level, so your presets work with any guitar, and use the OD-1 digital setting for tone. The amount of gain I can get from "vintage output" passive pickups is quite ridiculous. Also, I replaced most of the op-amps in the thing with NE5532's and the EQ quad op amp with a MC33079. That made it a lot quieter and improved the sound quality. I use a 31 band EQ with it, which really gives you tonal options.
@@TomChopperGuitar I wrote that comment a year ago, describing decade old work. Over the past 3 months, I slipped into modding the ADA MP-1 again. I discovered two ways to get much more gain out of the OD-1 stage. I also redesigned every band of the equalizer, and came up with a way to use regular switchcraft jacks for the A and B outputs. Recently, I discovered that the input capacitor C34 (ceramic disc) was causing poor tone. That puppy is on the main board, with the V1 tube right over it. I put a .033 uF monolithic in its place, and wow! Open sounding cleans and crunches, punchy distortion. I post about everything on the AdaDepot site.

For Master of Puppets both James and Kirk started using Mesa Boogie amps. They were both playing through Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+ slaved into moded 100W Marshall JCM800s used on the previous album.
Thanks, Brett. I have no doubt you are correct in imparting this information. I only know that ADA Signal Processors appear on the "THANX" list of the mighty MOP. B)
No question they were still in the mix for the black album as well. A friend just gave me one and the clean and it’s compression and chorus are spot on instant Metallica reminders as well as some of the gain sounds. Seen pics of the racks of boogie stuff but the ADA sits right in there with it
JMPs sound awesome live with a good IR and power amp sim and I assume these are great as well. A very easy way to get consistent tone at gigs if you still are not into diving into the Fractals and Kemper.
Hey Leon..next try the same set up with the Rocktron Pirahna...owned both and I think the Rocktron has a better sound and extra features like the stereo loop, hush built in..and cab sim out..

I am almost certain that the guitars on "Puppets" were created with this fine unit...Michael Wagener didn't hurt either!! Tesla, also...
They used them for some clean tones as well as roland jc 120
No question they were still in the mix for the black album as well. A friend just gave me one and the clean and it’s compression and chorus are spot on instant Metallica reminders as well as some of the gain sounds. Seen pics of the racks of boogie stuff but the ADA sits right in there with it
@@c0veredinash aaaah, yes!! The lovely JC 120...For my money, the MP1 is not in the same league as this classic, sought-after amp.
JMPs sound awesome live with a good IR and power amp sim and I assume these are great as well. A very easy way to get consistent tone at gigs if you still are not into diving into the Fractals and Kemper.
Mod it with the chip for a better sound
2:24 song anyone?
That's some random riffage in a vague 80s style
@@LeonTodd Is awesome mate! sick riffage! Great tone too btw man
Which tubes are in it?
12AX7 is the common go to for the ADA MP1! Cheers
@@ZiwaHD Sorry, for confusion! :) I wanted to know the brand and type of his 12ax7 tubes
80's guitar hero face))
Hey Leon..next try the same set up with the Rocktron Pirahna...owned both and I think the Rocktron has a better sound and extra features like the stereo loop, hush built in..and cab sim out..
I had the rockton voodoo valve pre. Great piece.
03:10 Extreme - He-Man Woman Hater. Nice one!
great riff!
Oh Crap, I couldn't stand it. I pulled the trigger on this unit off of Reverb. Hope mine sounds as good as this one!!
Me too, hoping you dig it!
best sound all flat for me go figure
Hahaha plug in and go!
Is that a hat?
I stole a tea cosy from the kettle
That Hamer has a weak pickup
Apart from the content of this video: Dude, you look like a Lady in this hat! You may think is a fashion thing. But it's not!
I keep a pot of tea on my head at all times and this keeps it warm.
@@LeonTodd That sounds like a plausible idea and more like a fashion statement. :)
use the 1.3 mod chip
Man, I bought one used years ago and sounds nothing like this, noisy as hell and half the gain you are getting from yours. Must be a bad apple I guess (anyway after watching this Ill retry maybe it was my fault). BTW, your hammer is amazing!
tubo777: I’ve been through about 6 and they all sound different. I’m not sure if it’s because they’re old and worn but that being said I do regret selling the one I liked.
Ada rules tweak tone tubes ect they all sound slightly different clean inside dust with tooth brush look at contact legs with magnafying
