Really cool! I think that the 'tube clean' is a misnomer. What it does well is a sort of AC/DC crunch; AC/DC themselves apparently ditched their Marshalls for a while for the MP-1s.
If memory serves, Vito (White Lion was opening for AC/DC in 88) mentioned it in a double interview with him and George Lynch in the February 1989 issue of Guitar for the Practicing Musician. I need to get a new copy of it to be sure, so take it with a grain of salt for now.
That Ratt riff sounded killer. I really wasn't much of a hair/glam rock fan, was more of a thrash/death metal fan, but always loved that riff. The ADA was a great piece of gear for its time.
Really like your reviews: I never forgot 1973-74 when I heard that hard Rock sound of the late 60's and 70's.. I bought my first pair of headphones and listen nonstop to Led Zeppelin's Live album....That sound that was the famous Les Paul into a full stack Marshall.....It's great to see in young fellas like yourself, that have that ear for what is hard Rock, early Metal, and even some great Punk Rock bands .cheers mate..
I remember my neighbor had an ADA, and played it through two Sun amps. Sounded awesome. I have Axe Fx II now Q10 and it pretty much can sound like anything. The knock on it is that there are not many usable presets. You need to be patient and create your own. Tone match is pretty cool and is arguably the best thing about the Axe Fx.
Great vid! My friend with an AxeFxIII was jumping with joy while linking me to this video! I used to bring my MP-1 to his place to try and get an MP-1 emulation on his Helix!
LOL...I swear in your last video I was checking out your rack (that didn't sound right) and noticed your MP-1 and I was like, we need a video on that guy! And here it is.
My MP1 has survived a Texas rainstorm and many wild gigs. When people mistakenly call it an “effects processor,” I look down my nose and in a very condescending tone, I say “it’s a midi programmable tube preamp, not an fx processor. It’s ok that you don’t know that...not many people do and that is a damn shame.” Then, I shake my head and walk off in disgust.😂😂
Yea man...so whenever you are on the mp-1, from now on you have to play the intro to addicted to that rush ;-) although you’re right...lay it down is more iconic. All these guys were huge influences on me and constantly in rotation when I was growing up in the 80’s playing guitar.
Very nice. Been running an Ada mp1 and mq1 setup lately thru a gcs-6. Liking an eq notch at 160hz of -3db, and 640hz of -3db, then gradual ramp up after 1khz to +2db til 6k, then ramp down. The notches tighten the sound. Sounds fantastic. Have not yet replicated on my AxeIII, mainly I think because of the gcs6.
The last demonstration "dirty" @ 4:45 It sounds familiar but then as you speed up I'm just lost in that sound !!! Is that something of yours or from a track ? Either way it's consumed my evening. Awesome !!! Inspiring !!!
I bought mine in 1990. I've played I-dunno-how-many gigs with it, it's been stolen, survived a tornado, and it's still my #1. The original Sustainiac still works,it never goes out of tune no matter how violent I get with the trem, and I've never actually had to replace anything on it (although I have done a ton of upgrades on it, stuff that wasn't available in 1990). I originally bought mine because I was a huge Steve Stevens fan (still am) and that's what he used. It has served me well for nearly 30 years. I wish that company was still around.
The ADA sounds a little bit warmer, but you can hear the Axe Fx 3 clean high end kick in when it switches, but besides that it is spot on and you wouldnt be able to tell in a full mix.
I love this and I havent even watched it all yet. ADA Rules! Lol. I'd love to see you do tone matches for different vintage preamps, and you have a few already.
Thanks for show us your EQ setting bro. You rocks amazing... I have a Furman PQ3 > MP1 > Peavey classic 50/50 > 2*12 Jet city with Eminences or 1*12 with Celestion classic lead 80 and sounds fantastic.
I am awaiting my Axe FX III arrival Monday, but for some reason, I find myself still wanting to buy all the 80's rack gear I wanted so badly in '87 but couldn't afford then. I told my friend I was thinking of buying the MP1. He said, won't the Fractal do that?? Yes, yes it will.. Curse of being a gear head ...
I have the MP-1 and absolutely love it. Wish Nuno Bettencourt was still using it. I actually have the settings he used give to me from his guitar tech through ADA if anyone would like them.
The 80s sounds are just as cool now as they were then! But what the 80s metal scene missed was anything adult about the songs. 80s metal bands knew nothing about philosophy. They didn't even know what it was! That's why today Pink Floyd is still big, but the hair metal songs are toast.
I had a stock ADA MP-1 and found it a little too "kind". Had the 3TM mod on it and it's now A MONSTER. It can only compare to my triaxis....Triaxis is more tight, BUT MP-1 is just SOOOO GAINY....Its a great "Marshall on steroids, amphetamines and other stuff" sound!!!!
@@LeonTodd Its a beast! I don't use it that often now as I really enjoy my triaxis, but I have a separate setup just for the MP-1 3TM and when I switch it on, the smile is instant!!!
Can you explain the advantage of going into the power amp and load box before Axefx instead of just going into the Axefx direct and using power amp sim there?
Way cool Leon! My favorite preamp and my favorite Ratt lick! Thanks for the preset! Any plans on tone matching the Piranha as well? Judas Priest used to make use of those if I recall correctly.
Thank you for these wonderful videos. Especially for that solid state clean. That's a main tone of my all time fav band Type O Negative. I'm wondering, do you by any chance know if there's a plugin that emulates ADA MP-1 tones? Would be a great thing for us window shoppers.
Hi Leon. I'm looking to tone match my mesa quad preamp. Can you advise how to connect it to axe fx 3 for this? I should also mention I'll be using the power amp of a mesa mkiii combo so no microphones required for the tone match. Many thanks.
Hi Leon, I am a big fan of the MP1 and I am a total newbie on Fractal products. I am using a FM3 now. When I load your MP1 match ir using the picker on the cab block. I get a very awful direct sound. Is there any settings I should do after I import the ir? Do I need to load 2 MP1 match ir into cab 1 and cab 2?
Thankyou! The JMP-1 models in there are already bang on to my ears. IIRC the Cobra is a Dual Rectifier style amp so the Recto's or FAS Modern will cop that.
Hey as a tribute to the late Oli Herbert from All That Remains(my heart is crushed!!!) could you please do his lead & rhythym for us true fans!! (and novice Ax8 Lightweights like me) i first heard Oli back in like 2007 & loved hearing Metalcore rise up again !! Thx for the lessons
Preset loads as a totally empty preset....I can upload any other AFXIII preset & they are fine, but this one just shows as completely empty. Something's wrong!
One of the best things about the MP1 was the built in chorus. My all time favorite chorus. Rate 0 Depth 100! EXACTLY how I used it!!!!
One of my faves too, so lush!
@@LeonTodd White Lion Big Game album! :D
i liked rate 0 depth 70

It's amazing how far gear has come since the 80's.

Exactly!
How did I miss that this was done with the Big Hair amp!! Thanks for this one, it rocks!

once again. Great sound and great HAMER !!!! thank you for your video Leon.
Awesome tone. Very close to the early Nuno tone. Wicked tone and great playing

f**k yeah mate!! sounds spot on!! great work as usual!

Awesome! One must ask oneself does it get any better than big hair, MP-1 and a Hamer...I think not!
Rock on Leon
Damn..... @ 4:45 "On the dirty side" that's the sound, full but

That Skid Row makes me sing along. Ricky was a young boy!!! Great sound.
Epic tune!

Super under rated guitars.

Not at all. Vito bratta really knew how to make them sings
What a player he was! Tragic that he lost the ability to play :(
Leon Todd I agree. His solos are beautiful and full of character. Each is a song in itself
Leon Todd off topic but, he lost his ability to play? Where did you hear that? Intrested to read/hear that.
Leon, a quick question: do you always push the Output Level pot around maximun when programming your MP-1 patches?
Which Hamer Model is it? Tone is awsome ...18and life...
