I never liked the sound of the OD2 even to play Metal. I've always prefered the more vintage sound of OD1 with the gain pushed almost to max (i think i had it on 18). I don't use it anymore but i doubt i would ever sell it! Unless someone pays serious money! :V

They were one of the better midi preamps out there. Their biggest downfall, however was that they were released right about the time when folks were starting to dump their refrigerator sized racks for the amp and pedals type rigs. Had it come out 5 years earlier, they would have been in every LA band’s rig
Yes, back in the day I had the JMP-1 and JFX-1; main rig was the full-on ADA rig, based around the MP-1 and MQ-1, with B200S power amp and 4 x 2x12 vertical split stacks. Eventually, I replaced the MP-1 and MQ-1 with an MP-2.
Different level altogether but way back when, I used to record onto my Yamaha MT120 4 track cassette recorder via a Marshall 9004 with pedals in front where necessary. Sounded great 🙂
Great video. the part of the circuit that's doing all of the distortion on these units is all solid state. There are 2 tubes, but they are borderline decoration.
I‘ve read other people stating this. I wonder if this is just gossip or if Marshall actually got away with a „tube preamp“ which turns out to be solid state. They would have been lying in everybodys faces. @matrix12x you got first hand experience with this matter?

I feel many folks today haven't notice that units such as JMP1, MP1 and Triaxis are just genuine high-end amp tones in rack formats. We have cutting edge (for 2024) modelers/capture boxes which provide great digital representation of classic amp tones, which is awesome. In the other hand considering such racks like outdated technology sounds as far fetched as considering amps outdated, as those racks haven been used into remarkable records for decades, records whose tones are still top notch and ultimate reference even for pros. Obviously the current digital gear sounds so good and is much more convenient than carry rack units and/or amps, but tube based racks still produce tone and feel which accurately represent amp experience. Amazing stuff such as Synergy is to me like glorified modern versions of those rack units.

A classic! OD 2 could have even a little more gain and sometimes I wished to have even 0.5 steps for the controls, but apart from this an excellent, flexible. robust and reliable tool. Does not necessarily need a power amp to sound good, but you can use one of course. My favorite at the moment is one with a pair of KT77's. But alone with a good cab IR behind it can sound great.
Great demo of a cool (and now vintage-ish?) Marshall product. I had a JMP-1 back in the 90's. I liked hearing other people play through it, but somehow it didn't quite work for me. Tried the 9001 preamp too. I liked that a bit better, but what I soon realized was that I could get more satisfying sounds running a humble little Boss SD-1 into my JCM800 2203. Less fizz, more grunt. Simpler was better, for me at least. Some very clever engineering went into those Marshall rack preamps, so hats off in any case.
Stephen used jmp1 on white pony and forward that. Adrenalinne and ATF were recorded with Ada mp1 trough marshall jcm800 and later with marshall power amps such as the 9200
if it was good enough for Johnny A for years... I'm not sure he still uses it but it was the core of his rig for ages and he had some awesome tones, both clean and overdriven
Sold mine 4 or 5 yrs ago...still liked it then but wasn't using it. Like you said - Def Leppard, Maiden etc etc used 'em and when I hear those old albums to my ears they still sound great. I heard it said you can take the valve out of these things and they still work the same! Never tried it though so could be a fairy tale......
I got one of these in a package deal 10 years ago. Great piece of kit. I have a few ADA mp1’s as well which are more like hotrodded Marshall ( and nice chorus) . You need to have the intellifex or a quadraverb paired to have that classic combination.
Great bit of kit, used a JMP1 for years. Marshall unfortunately was like about 6 years too late to the preamp party. If the JMP1 had been released around 1986, the era of the Lee Jackson, the ADA and other preamps it would have been absolutely huge. Marshall for the most part over the last 30 odd years has been the story of lost opportunities. Very unfortunate for a company so steeped in rock and roll heritage.
I used a JMP-1 off and on for twenty years or so. Still use one (virtually) in my Kemper. A JMP-1 in conjunction with something like an intellifex, or as I did for a long time, a ROLAND GP-100, is a rig that can cover most bases. It's not very forgiving of sloppy playing though. There is nowhere to hide 😁
The jmp, like the a/da mp1 was really only known for one sound. The rest were lackluster... in some cases like white lion and skid row, they used one specific preset.
I did have a JMP1 with JFX 1 and 9100. I sold it for a Rocktron voodoo Valve which I prefered. These days Im a Fractal man - have been since 2007, though I still keep a valve amp around (PT15 currently). Iron Maiden have used JMPs for ages - though this last tour they have finally swapped it out for the Fractal Axe-FX3 (using the JMP model ......). Cant really have a better advert for the old JMP though.
Marshall needs to release a 30th or so anniversary edition of the JMP-1. It was ahead of its time and still a great pre-amp. I would buy one in a second and I still have two originals with a JFX-1. I've used them with Mesa Boogie Stereo 100 and the Seymor Duncan Power Stage 700.. Throw a couple effect pedals in front or something like a Line6 Effects and you can't beat it!👍👍
years ago, before the YT age, me and some old guitar pals gathered all of our preamps (JMP, Triaxis, MP1, Egnater, Prophecy, Metaltronix). Of the programmable units, thought the ADA was best. For me overall that Egnater rocktron IE4 was best and simplest (4 channels). I recently tooled around with the idea of getting a midi preamp and came to the conlcusion that I dont want to tool around with buttons up/down/save/enter/blah blah...I'll just stick to individual dials. Nonetheless, this is a great demo on a true piece of legacy classic rock n roll gear! Thanks!
I had the older Marshall power amp, which was a green, 3U, heavy beast, a Boogie Triaxis, and a Quadraverb. I love my rack gear. I keep meaning to hunt out a Quad preamp because I still gig with my rack. I use a 50w, 1U power amp nowadays because the Marshall is far too heavy
Cool video. I always wanted an ADA MP1, the JMP1 and Alesia quadraverb, but couldn’t afford any of them. I also wanted a 4 track cassette recorder and never got one. And yet, today I have a Quad Cortex (previously had an Eleven Rack) and I can do all of this with the QC and my laptop (with DAW)…
The 9004 was more user friendly and still very similar to Rocktrons Widowmaker. When paired with a Quadraverb or Digitech IPS units it got the job done 👍
I have thought about building a small jam rack to take to small jams, open mics, or friends houses for some time now. This could well be a good place to start. I would love having it in my home studio also, being compact and killer sounding !
The JMP-1 doesn’t HAVE to sound “‘80’s”. “It’s of an era” is a load of crap. Sure, it came out in ‘92...but that doesn’t mean it can’t sound like anything else. When was the JMP Plexi released? I doubt it’s only “relevant” for late ‘60’s covers as people are still using them for all kinds of stuff.....or a Fender Deluxe Reverb. Glossing over a couple presets while patched into an interface for 10 minutes is NOT a valid review. Spend a while plugged into an amp ac cab after dialing in mid-gain crunch with some delay or a touch of Reverb and THEN tell me “meh....it’s of an era”. The Two Rock tone snobbery on display here is ridiculous....🙄
I really wish someone would try some pedals around one. I run amongst other things A 2B Boost, Original BBreaker Strymon Compadre, Riverside in front and after TimeLine BigSky then to the Power Stage of a JCM900.. Mostly use Clean 1. Try something simple like a Cali76 after it.
What’s it going into? Some kind of direct connection? Is it coming out of a combo, or a cab, being mic’d? The clean sounds nice but that may have little to do with the unit and more to do with the other things in the signal chain.
Still have my Marshall MP-1 and my rackmount Rockman. I believe the ADA MP-1 is a better preamp then the Marshall MP-1. Be nice to see a shoot out of those 2 units
I'd love to have one, even if I must say that It would be the only rack mounted unit I'd choose, so it would be abit awkward/stupid to bring around. Unless i built a wooden shell for it with an integrated class d power amp...
I had one in the early 90's. Sold it after about 5 years use and then bought another about 10 years ago. Couldn't get on with it second time around tbh.
Deftones made epic albums with this unit. Massive sounds!
I bought a JMP1 when it came out and it's still on my rack. Never had tubes changed, it's indestructible.
Tubes are pretty much useless in this circuit, most of the distortion is made by opamps

As I wrote under another video, it sounds like a cross between a Valvestate and a Rockman.
I had one with JFX and 9100 poweramp and didn't miss a bit.
Some very clever engineering went into those Marshall rack preamps, so hats off in any case.
hmmm...need one of them in my life to go with my other 90s marshall gear!
If I'm not mistaken, the jmp 1 was used on all Deftones albums up to White Pony... it's the only piece of archaic gear I still want to this day
Stephen used jmp1 on white pony and forward that. Adrenalinne and ATF were recorded with Ada mp1 trough marshall jcm800 and later with marshall power amps such as the 9200
😊 I love MIDI preamps. Love the modular aspect and how they can call up various patches in an instant. Building blocks, have it all.
Totally agree!
if it was good enough for Johnny A for years...
Yes, around 86-87 it would be killer amp, but I love that sound even today.👍
I used a JMP-1 off and on for twenty years or so. Still use one (virtually) in my Kemper. A JMP-1 in conjunction with something like an intellifex, or as I did for a long time, a ROLAND GP-100, is a rig that can cover most bases. It's not very forgiving of sloppy playing though. There is nowhere to hide 😁
The jmp, like the a/da mp1 was really only known for one sound. The rest were lackluster... in some cases like white lion and skid row, they used one specific preset.
I have a pair of mid 1960's RCA 12ax7's that I would love to swap the Jmp-1 stock tubes for.
Great video...i thought the cleans sounded fantastic! Most Marshalls I've owned all had fabulous and underrated clean channels.
Thanks for sharing!!
Throw a couple effect pedals in front or something like a Line6 Effects and you can't beat it!👍👍
I think the Nik Huber sounds great! Did you already change the pickups? Cheers Alex
Did you use the Cornell Amp as Power Amp? Into Effects Return? Which effects did you use?
Great sounding !
What's your signal chain ? Is a modded one, or a factory standard ?
years ago, before the YT age, me and some old guitar pals gathered all of our preamps (JMP, Triaxis, MP1, Egnater, Prophecy, Metaltronix). Thanks!
Is the reverb in the JMP or elsewhere? What power amp and speakers are you using here?
It’s elsewhere, im using a UAD Lexicon 224
No matter what amp you plug into it sounds the same; that being phenomenal!
Nice rig.
In the 9000 series, the 9001 was the three valve/three channel preamp (I have one😊) and the 9004 was the solid state two channel preamp.
The 9004 was more user friendly and still very similar to Rocktrons Widowmaker. When paired with a Quadraverb or Digitech IPS units it got the job done 👍
Found in almost every guitar player’s touring rig back in the 90s 2000s. Paired with the 9200
Still my main amp. Love it.
My philosophy is: if the gear is not crap, and your playing is good, you can get good tones out of anything regardless of the era.
Still have my rack rig. It has this unit and an MP/2 ADA critter.
At this point in music and gear who cares anymore about it sounding dated. Its awesome and i want one😀
I have thought about building a small jam rack to take to small jams, open mics, or friends houses for some time now. This could well be a good place to start. I would love having it in my home studio also, being compact and killer sounding !
Nice one doc!
Always wanted one of these back in my young days! got a valvestate instead....🙄 Anyway, why does no one use racks anymore?
My buddy had a valvestate around 98/99, it was a great sounding amp but I've never found another thar sounded as good as his
The ADA was popular, but the JMP-1 might edge it slightly
I used to have a JMP-1 but sold it not long ago. Have since bought a UA Lion and it's all you need
Billy Gibbons still uses one for his live rig, they’re fantastic preamps
I still have a JMP1 and a Marshall 9100. I use the midiverb4 effects unit.
What’s it going into? Some kind of direct connection? Is it coming out of a combo, or a cab, being mic’d? The clean sounds nice but that may have little to do with the unit and more to do with the other things in the signal chain.
still got one of these, too. Diming the 'clean 2' channel reminds a little of an Xotic RC Booster, nice!
Nice tip.
Still have my Marshall MP-1 and my rackmount Rockman. I believe the ADA MP-1 is a better preamp then the Marshall MP-1. Be nice to see a shoot out of those 2 units
What guitar is that? Modified at all? Sounds great! Thanks.
I'd love to have one, even if I must say that It would be the only rack mounted unit I'd choose, so it would be abit awkward/stupid to bring around. Unless i built a wooden shell for it with an integrated class d power amp...
Back in the early '90s, it was down to this and the Piranha. The salesman talked me into the Piranha because it was "more versatile".
sounds amazing!
I had one in the early 90's. Sold it after about 5 years use and then bought another about 10 years ago. Couldn't get on with it second time around tbh.
your guitar tone is awesome ~ it's perfect ..... i'm your south korean fan
Gk mt250 I had one in the early 90s most superb sound ever
Raw tone of those things sounds very similar to my DSL-40c, it seems.
