- Cam reviews BlackBerry's latest flagship device. The Passport features an innovative physical keyboard with touch sensitivity built in, a sharp 1440x1440 LCD display and one of Snapdragon's 801 series quad-core processors. It's beautifully made, and feels fantastic in two hands. But is it enough?
Few devices combine metal accents, chassis and plastic to such a high level. Everything from the solid body, to the slightly curved glass and metal frets between keys oozes quality and craftsmanship, and gives you piece of mind that this device will keep on going even with the most careless of business folk. This phone speaks to upper classes in society..Lower classes need cellphone for gaming or speding their entire days getting busy with dummy apps.
It seems i am the only person anymore, that is not playing some type of game on my phone

I have a iPhone 6s Plus for personal use and entertainment, and the Blackberry Passport for my work phone, and I must admit, I am extremely impressed with the new Blackberry. While it does not have all the features of the iPhone, for my work applications, it's a very good device, and I'm impressed with how much work related stuff that I can do on the go on this Blackberry without having to log in with my work laptop. The typing gets a little time to get used to since I'm so used to virtual keys, but getting used to the hard keys was not has tough as I thought. Predictive text seems to work better than the iPhone as well. Overall, I'm extremely happy with the blackberry passport. Hopefully this new phone will help RIM in the long run.

guys, blackberry is like apple in 1997 right when steve jobs returned to the company. Apple was at that time battered to the ground by IBM and microsoft. But steve jobs helped apple remember their roots about beautiful intuitive products for regular consumers that work seamlessly. And also apple was minority "different" unique brand. Blackberry i feel is the same way, except blackberry's focus is the business and productivity customer. I feel like blackberry got distracted and lost, but I feel like the remembered that their roots were built in productivity, and they went straight back to that. Blackberry blend proves it. I hope blackberry comes back like apple. I have a iPhone 5s now, but I am no fanboy and will consider blackberry if they make it a little smaller.
Anyone else see the parallels in 1997 apple and the 2014 blackberry? its quite interesting.

Thanks for a great review!! It's honestly a shame that mainstream society hasn't appreciated the recent works of Blackberry! I think if app developers would get on board with creating native apps then consumers would follow or BETTER YET - consumers forget how much power they have. Instead of giving up on blackberry because of the lack of apps - show app developers and carriers what you want with your purse strings and the more people who do that will get the attention of the carriers and the developers.
Not going to lie i want this phone i can deal with not having a lot of games I dont care about them any way!!!! Loved bb even when i was in 8-9 grade!
When I get my second Passport the SE, one dude saying something about my Passport at the swimming pool and he notice the read experience and the internet speed I had .
Then he saw the logo probarly . I Thought BlackBerry is dead and we start talking. The dude has a iphone 6 and he had a BlackBerry before in the past. So I show him the hub, the real multitasking with native apps and the Android apps that are only know for switch tasking (dumb os, like ios) . He likes it and he asked me where I bought this telephone. I told him and also about BlackBerry trade up program.
He get his iphone 6 and mailed the shop and trade up url to himself to check out later.
Last Sunday I had to bring my son again to swimming lessons and I saw the guy again, he said "" Thank you showing the good fruit" I thought what the hell and he show me the Passport SE . He love it and he said the music experience is awesome and he can stream stuff to every TV in the house without Apple TV. I asked him if he trad up but he just sold his iphone 6 on the internet.
I was suprised from a guy telling me almost 3 weeks ago he had a apple tablet and airbook.

this phone is a beast, never been so happy with a smartphone and I had em all. Blackberry really should be noticed by more people, its super intuitive and productive. Also best build quality you can find in any device.
Silver edition of this is the sexiest phone out there. Period.

Because Blackberry didn't develop the ideas of z10 and z30 for some stupid reason. If they release two new smartphones with 4" and 5" displays, modern hardware, rounded corners and their traditional rubbery back, I will definitely buy one of those.
I would buy z10 if it was 2013.

Me personally don't care if my phone is hyper fast, as long as there is no long delays I don't mind. What I LOVE is change and being different. I love tech and will be getting this phone in a couple months, just got the amazon fire phone so won't be changing for a while. But I'm exciting for this sexy beast of a device.
Nice Review. Though I guess you missed the point that you can resize Android Runtime apps by swiping from up to down to reveal a menu which allows hiding the bottom panel with the back button aswell as resizing the app. The app then needs a restart for it to work but that will then no longer cut off edges of the app.
PS: One interesting thing for video media consumption. Try holding a 4.5 Inch Smartphone in landscape mode to watch a video and lay it on top the passport. It almost fits perfectly.
So the only annoying thing are the black bars. On the native media player you can zoom in (which will cut some of the video edges especially on a 16:9 video) which is a nice feature to get rid of the bars.

I second that. BlackBerry needs to do a better job of pointing out some of its features others tends to copy. Like instant message apple copied BlackBerry 10 after a year of launching.
I'm a big Blackberry fan but the passport just isn't for me... I'm waiting for the Classic release (which if IIRC is in two weeks). Even though BB did a great job with their virtual keyboard I'm still a big fan of the physical keyboard
Blackberry has always been a more sophisticated phone. It caters to a different demographic. I use a Blackberry , and also have an iPhone. I feel the Blackberry is for the business , more professional people. I've always loved Blackberry for its email capabilities.
I've been a fan of phonedog since Noah, when Phonedog began. I've seen them come and go over the years I've never been critical of any of them, but this guy is painstakingly boring to watch. No enthusiasm at all. Sounds like he's reading a book to a group of small children. No, I'm not going to yell "bring Aaron back" but I will say bring the excitement back.

Ohhh I used to have a blackberry and I loveddd the blinking light notification.
Got this phone a few days ago. Previous smartphones were the HTC evo, HTC Evo Shift, Samsung Instinct, iPhone 4s, HTC one (m7), Samsung Galaxy S5, and this is the best device I have used in my opinion.

You don't miss the point, when it comes to show what make the device you are presenting a unique one, and you cover the overall spec aspects!

After using it for a week, I don't think I can get back to a 'narrow phone' again..
I think typing is faster on my Z10 (with autocorrect), but on the Passport it's a great experience regardless, and certainly fast enough.
Regarding "having the latest and greatest apps"; to me, email, messaging and the browser are the greatest apps anyway, and those are excellent, if not best in class on BB10.2/BB10.3.
The only downside is that the Amazon App store is missing Dutch (my country) apps for public transport. I have Snap loaded so I have access to every android app ever released on the Android App Store so it's not a problem for me, but Blackberry should have loaded Snap on every 10.3 device out of the box instead of Amazon

When blackberry failed, and went Android that was the end for me. I loved Blackberry, but I refuse to use Android again.

I use a Z30 for work, and a variety of androids as my personal devices, and its great. BB10 is a great work environment OS, and android fills all of my personal and multimedia needs. My coworker has a passport on order, and I'm dying to check it out!

I have this phone. This is a business person phone. Not a phone for pure "fun". If you want fun get iPhone but if you are running a company or have a high position in the company that you need to access email, Excel, Microsoft, etc, it's a great phone.

Dude you nailed it right on the head. Blackberry is for business, business, business. It's not for everyone and that being said I wish the next reviews on the Passport will not focus on comparison between iOS and Android. They're both good phones but they are not business device's like Blackberry. So judging the Passport because you can't see your movie in full view or you're frustrated because your favorite game is not playing well on the device is a matter of poor judgment when you pick a Business phone for entertainment reasons.

If this had the removable battery, track pad and menu keys I would've probably....been sold, but that (Classic) takes it all imo.
Blackberry Passport is a premium device!

Holy crap! BlackBerry has changed so much since my Curve back in the day. Ahh the days when cellphones had personality. Now days, it seems every phone looks identical and does the same thing. All I hear is fighting over 2 products that have touch screens with one button and can go on the internet. Woopdy doo let's fight over which one seems to be better!
Someone should make a video with the three OS and make a comparison of how long it takes to do. A list of 5 tasks. BlackBerry will blow them out of the water and people would understand how slow android and iOS really are

This device is better then my galaxy s4 and I had iPhone 5 , it's also better. Blackberry did a great move on this blackberry. And the battery is beautiful plus the speed it's great and way less bugs and freezes then Galaxy
Blackberry was my first phone I loved it but they really need to step up their game and comeback because android and Apple are the only leading consumers on phones

I can't help but state that this device is SEXY, it's a mystique, and it's hardware and software design is quite special.. BUT, it's already outdated by Google and Samsung.. It reminds me of the really good and postmodern mobile phones that Nokia used to make in 2009 and 2010, they are both beautiful AND won't have a chance.. this device is not made for people who demand so much out of their phone, it's made for people who already have so much and want something that will work specifically for them.. it's like custom made cars and watches that the upper class can't live without.. it's a limited edition perfume. if i used to wear tight suits and jump between airports in a private jet i would have bought one

I had iPhone and android. iPhone runs smooth with iCloud (contacts, pics, calendar etc) , Android using google ecosystem for the same things and Fire OS using Amazons cloud drive. How good is the syncing of a blackberry, and what suggestions you have for backups?

Dear Blackberry company, is it that hard to put any front cam on the bb passport? I may have really liked this device but u know, the front cam is what makes it more complete i guess.
IMEE PADAMADA BB Passport DOES have a front camera. One of the best 2MP cameras ever. So clear and sharp.
Thats great. I've always been a fan of the BB cam eversince. Unfortunately, here in the Philippines, you won't be able to find shops with blackberry products anymore. Quite difficult to look for the bb passport. =(

A lot of it is because most of BlackBerry's value is now in its OS and how it works alongside its enterprise services. They are very, very secure. Enterprises don't trust Android to be as safe. I think having BB10 and being able to run Android apps is as close as we're going to get to BBerry making Android powered phones.
i did use a blackberry z 10 for a month loved it just missed out on a lot of apps i wanted

@mark. BlackBerry can not be bought out without canada and united states approval. BlackBerry is like the landmark of canada and the u.s. Government depends on blackberry and their security enterprise. Hence, selling it to a Chinese company would threaten u.s. Government security since obviously they don't get along.

The device heats up like hell even inside the pocket with no running apps. The screen pops up, cracks open. Beautiful, yes. Durable an well built, NO!!!!
I got this device but whenever I take it out from my pocket friends make fun of me and people look at me strangely , one week after I returned it!!! sad story

Please don't get this phone. Once you own one, you'll never be able to go back to anything else again :-) Unlike android and apple virtual keyboards I find that the on screen punctuation marks are exactly the ones that you would normally use instead of scanning through pages of characters to find the one you're looking for. Another thing about os10, you don't download apps you're never going to use again unlike you would on other platforms. Great phone.

It looks great, no doubt. But IMO that's really all it has going for it, and other phones look better. Every other device available will have the same or better features and capabilities (including specs). All the form factor does is limit functionality; games are impossible, making that Snapdragon 801 pretty useless. Videos will be tiny. That leaves internet browsing, texting, and email... Which other phones do perfectly well. Combine all those factors with BB's pretty limited OS, and it's just not a practical device. For its price point, there are a ton of other phones that offer much more practicality.
But that's just my take on it.
That being said, BlackBerry makes some incredibly well built, good looking phones. They would be a strong contender among android manufacturers and could probably come up with a killer android skin.

Not need, the only thing that limits Blackberry Passport and don't let it compete with most of the Androids is it square screen, if they make a rectangular shaped phone like a Z30 with all the power and specs BB would kill.
