BlackBerry Classic First Impressions

- For the BlackBerry faithful, the Classic is a sight for sore eyes. The approach by the Waterloo company is simple: rather than taking the competition head on, BlackBerry is putting its focus on retaining the customers it still has. That means more devices like the Passport and Classic, which offer that familiar (and terrific) typing experience with excellent enterprise security. If you want to relive the glory days of physical keyboards, the Classic is the perfect device for you.

Physicl keyboard is nice.. My one issue with that, is I've hugely adapted the "swipe to text" thing.. Lots of times, when I'm walking, or playing with my cat, masturbating, or riding a bike, I use the swiping function.. It really is a nice looking phone though
Lol
You deserve a thumbs up
Hahaha
Probably the best review of the Blackberry Classic.
I don't know why others don't use the analogy of cars. If you're buying a Dodge then don't expect it to be a Cadillac. That's exactly how this phone is. It's not there to replace your multimedia and games consuming phones. People should know that. I'm using Galaxy Note Edge and have just ordered Blackberry Classic to try.
I have an iPhone 6 right now but there's something about a Blackberry that makes me think I can live without such a "social" smartphone..
I look at an iPhone as a phone you get a child. It plays games well, it plays videos and post instagram pictures, it functions as a social device. A Blackberry can do all that, but its primary focus is secured comunications, texting, video conferencing, business applications. So a real responsible adult will chose which device? The Blackberry 100% of the time, the ones who pick the other are just pretending to believe they grew up.
Or like to watch vids and look at photos on their phone. Adults aren't all one dimensional in needs lol.
Dude, stop trying to be a troll.
our i-devices allowed my family to FaceTime with me while I was deployed to Afghanistan... I know that there are other means i.e. Skype but the FaceTime worked better and more consistent than my friends who used other services.
Get off your high horse, plenty of responsible adults have Iphones. They all do the same thing, all phones do email, and texting, and calling, you're just a judgmental douche. I would think this phone is good for someone's elderly aunt who just can't figure out those gosh darn on screen keyboards. Also why the fuck would you get a child an Iphone, those are expensive phones not meant for children.
how the fuck can you see an iPhone compared as something you get a child and blackberry is for adults but 8yrs ago every child had a black berry pearl, curve, bold…. foh fanboy… i bet you play wii u only and won't get a ps4 or xb1 too because their for social reasons not gaming
Your production quality has gone up so much. I love the direction Technobuffalo is going. Kudos to John and everyone behind the scenes :)
i'm an android fan now and always, but i have to admit i really like what blackberry is doing and i hope they continue to make phones like they have been lately
My first smartphone was a BlackBerry. Brings back memories, but it's a shame they just aren't as relevant. :/
This seems like the perfect phone to use in conjunction with a tablet. Most flagship android phones or iPhones have a number of features that overlap with a tablet's, but this doesn't. This is a solid, reliable communications device (like a phone should be) and should be used as such. You could then use an iPad or Nexus 9 for media and entertainment, and not feel like it's a redundancy to your phone.
FYI, you can use the spacebar to page down, instead of scrolling using the touchscreen. Much faster, and less tiring. Plenty of keyboard shortcuts too, e.g. T to reach the top (B for bottom) of the screen
A Blackberry is not the phone for me but I would really like to see them make a come back.
Great Rant Jon, I am glad you are giving Blackberry an second chance
I currently own an iPhone 6S 16GB, but for work I have a Samsung something something little phone that I use mainly for emails, whatsapp, calls, text messages.. I think this will be the best change ever!!! I cannot wait until the end of the month to purchase it
Blackberry pearl was also one of my absolute favorite phones! I actually really miss that phone a lot
Brilliant, Unbiased Review. this should be the benchmark for all tech folks to follow. Great Job.
I love BlackBerry phones for their security and just working OS. Even though Im now iPhone user BlackBerry would be my only option when looking on the other platforms. I have had two BlackBerry phones before and really liked them!
I never understood why people claim that the BB Assistant isn't as good as other services...
First off, it uses the same information service as Siri (Wolfram|Alpha). Secondly, voice recognition on my old Q10 is way better than my iPhone 5S...Q10 was right 95% of the time where as the iPhone was probably at 75%.
You can also do more with it than you can with Google Now...as far as functions on the phone.
Only thing I've seen so far that I would say needs work is the response time of the Assistant. Sometimes it will take a few seconds to get information when Now or Siri are already pass done! This is true on my Q10 and even on my new Passport - which I must admit is the best phone I've ever owned. Actually sold my Note 4 for it!
So yeah, my mini rant, and OBVIOUSLY my "opinion".
Also, seriously, the Passport is absolutely incredible. If you can deal with the form factor I don't see why anyone would want anything else. The build quality, the display, the OS, the sound quality, speed, touch physical keyboard, battery life...man it just doesn't get better than this!
Thanks John. Brilliant review as usual if not the best i've seen of this device so far.
So for blackberry 720p screen is considered low resolution, but for an iPhone 6 it is not? Great logic there technobuffalo.
I replaced my iphone 5s w/the classic an couldn't be happier
***** no, very little apps
Not all the apps run in that format of the screen.
+strpl2 might go from an iPhone 6 Plus to a Classic. I don't use many apps. I Text, Call and Email the most.
+OfficialDR3P which don't?
+strpl2 I did exactley the same but i did not sell my iPhone
Thanks for the interesting review. Try to test more mainstream apps to show us how it works on the new bberry, and a big THANKS for making road safety part of your program. This is so important
Great, honest, objective review Jon. Keep up the great work.
Great quick review and rants Jon!
Non removable battery? All I can remember from my Blackberry Bold days was being told to do a battery pull to resolve issues. Hopefully no such issues exist in this instance.
Love my classic ! It excels at messaging, email. & is all I need for Facebook, battery last all day
Would love to have this as a work phone. Unfortunately my work hasn't granted me a phone yet
Merry Christmas !
The "BLACKBERRY CLASSIC" is a (BOSS) period
that textin and drivin commercial tho! SHEESH!
Definitely my next phone. I have the Q10 now so I'm loving the OS.
preordered mine, can't wait
The phone is just so beautiful! But I would have to keep my iPhone and have the blackberry as a collectors item or something. Lol
I am probably going to get this as my next phone, have a blackberry q5 now.
This is probably the most fair review I've seen from a general review standpoint, so thank you. There are so many people with devastatingly narrow outlooks comparing it to flagship fodder, seemingly unable to fathom how a phone can exists for purposes other than media consumption/selfies. Which would be perfectly fine in a perfect world, but they have to be abrasive cunts about everything and condemn the Classic and BlackBerry as a whole because "hurr not muh Galaxy/iPhone!!!"
I officially retired my bb classic l. I am now using a Samsung S10e and Iphone 6S plus as my primary device and secondary device respectively.
Where is your Classic review already?! And your Passport review!
Just buy an iPhone and call it a day.
What if they like keyboards? What they don't need a lot of apps? What they want to stand out from a crowd? What if they need a lot of productivity? Then IPhone isn't for them.
Stricken end with fear who cared about keyboards there anoying af
Sports_car6
Lot's of people like keyboards? All cellphones had a keyboard of some time before the Iphone became a thing and even then for years afterward phones still had keyboards.
StrickenWithFear I loved my QWERTY keyboard on my old phone.
Troll. Disregard.
Just saw the classic today at att. Its definitely sexier in person than looking at pictures and videos. Still love my passport though but im considering having a second phone lol
dude this device is known for the track pad to avoid touching the screen, which was the main update on top of the Q10. I didn't see you using the track pad once in this review!
if the keyboard is what i expect ill upgrade to this. Iv been between iphones and androids for the past 5 or 6 years and if there's one thing i can say its that as iv grown up i just don't care about apps as much as i used to, or at least games for that matter. I miss physical keyboards and if this goes how i think it will people will bypass it, the price will drop hella fast and i can get this phone dirt cheap and be happy with it.
For those who need work phones, this is by far one of the best work phones ever created.
That's the great thing about blackbarry phones either you love them or don't I personally feel this phone is great for what it is like he said in the video it wasn't meant to compete head to head with any flagship phones out there but its what blackbarry does that makes them great the bbm interface the emails being faster the actually interface it self its all what they do great, so I'm happy im getting one soon I never always been a real social media junky i have Twitter Facebook and instagram but I don't use any of them for any real need as much as I need email as well as text and just having a good plain but modern phone like this is gonna be great
This is the second Blackberry Classic video I have watched when the reviewer is slow at typing. I remember my thumbs flying across the keyboard on my Blackberry Curve 8900. I guess some people need a little bit of practice.
wow ur so cool
Tony L. What a child
Awesome first impressions dude.. I've got an iPhone 5s, iPad air and note 3. Deal is one of the phone's is going to my mum as she had managed to break her phone. And I'm thinking of picking up this BlackBerry as I don't really play games on my phones. It's very productivity centric with just a few social apps like Facebook, Snapchat and so on. Otherwise its all very bare bone. So which phone do you think I should keep besides the blackberry. At this point I'm somewhat partial to getting rid of my iPhone 5s.. But its linked to my iPad air and it works so well .. But again I love my note 3 which I've rooted and have cm 11 latest one running .. And it's amazing .. Help?
Nice video. Instead of the bold, the Q10 would be a nice comparison especially the screen. Nice video tho.
This was a very fair video. Thank you for being honest and unbiased.
thing is....not all APKs work on native Android devices either....take "Milk Music" for example.....its only for Samsung phones.....
Looks extremely premium
This phone for me is a no Brainer as an upgrade from my Q10. This is what the Q10 should have been. If it had, Blackberry's bottom line would have been a lot healthier and provided a great launching pad for the Passport /Rio. BB now has qwerty covered like no one else.
I have an iPhone 7plus and one of these because I just love the design lol
make a flashback review of old classic phones, like the pearl =)
Excellent review! Thank you!
I think this phone is meant for a person like me who doesn't want to carry a note 4 around in his pocket all day at work.
I actually don't want to see blackberry die out ! They have pretty good phones that people should actually take the time to look at
You should do a comparison of this and the Q10
Productivity apps integration? Also, diction training.
Throw this ? The belt besides the trackpad do the answer/cancel back key, are they touch screen or physical keys.
Where is your Passport review?
"Black looks pretty black, white looks very white." HEY.
But if you DO text while driving, drive fast. Because you really need to get off the road as soon as possible.
Can anyone tell me how the maps are on this phone? I really love the blackberry and my main things with having a phone are great call/text quality and a good map application.
Have you tried the mailbox app for email on ios? It's lightning fast for email fetching
Please post a full review
I don't own a blackberry, ask for my pin and get slapped heavy
What's your pin?
About to make a BBM just for you zou brb

BlackBerry classic design with iPhone 4s performance would be my ideeal phone
I wanted this phone but it didn't come out for Sprint.
I WOULD use a blackberry for work, but price is HIGH...
I remember those days when my BB battery when low early in the morning and/or phone was so hot in my pocket that needed to put it over my desk... the long reboot time... the updating lasting for ever... the slow browser... I REMEMBER BLACKBERRY!
You remember windows vista? Windows 7 came next. Companies fix shit.
And all phones are expensive. More than $100 or more than this, typically.
What I mean is... 450+ dollars for a blackberry is way to high, I thing a phone for work is something between 200 and 250 usd
Dwight Castillo This phone is only 50 dollars with a contract, that 450 is with no contract, compared to other phones that is much cheaper. The slow browser? I really hate when people live in the past, the QNX Based BB10 OS has the FASTEST mobile browser available, and has had it for over 2 years. bgr.com/2014/02/06/blackberry-10-browser-test-iphone-android/
I'm not getting a Blackberry but I thought I'd put my thoughts in. Hearing that the camera is bad is something that needs to be rectified. Yes, I understand that the people buying this phone probably don't care too much about pictures, but there are so many cases in which good picture quality is needed.
I mainly work in an office but I have to venture out to the construction site at least once a week. I usually have to take photos to better my reports. Having good picture quality to show things that have very fine detail is so important. Fortunately, the iPhone 5 my company provides does good enough. Yes, they aren't super high quality, but they're acceptable. Now I don't know the quality of the Classic's camera, just hearing that it's bad seems good enough to know.
The iphone has nearly the same quality though. They both have 8 megapixels.
There's more than just megapixels for a camera.
gameshoes Yeah but I really don't see how the sensors will be that much different. You didn't even a give it chance, it seems like you've already written it off. Also the Iphone isn't even a business phone.
StrickenWithFear I've only written the Blackberry off because I am not going to go out of my way to purchase it. It doesn't matter if the iPhone isn't a business, it's the one my business has provided for me. But the Classic here seems to offer very little for any business that uses iPhones to switch.
gameshoes Have you used blackberry before? Also if that's the company phone that you've been given then why are you looking at this anyway?
man that advert was scary and I don't even have a car yet
Is the battery normal when you FIRST purchase the phone as it comes as 13%? I bought the phone, charged it till reach 56% and left it without using it, then came back in 1 hour I found the battery 20%?! Can you please assist me with this issue? How long should charge the battery before using it for first time? thanks
+Momen Attia itwas syncing during the first two days. you should be getting two days of battery life by now.
Should I buy the classic or just save my money and get an Q10
Do you feel like you'll need the tool belt or no? Do you want it to be slightly bigger or not? It all depends on that. Also the new one has the newest version of the OS already built in.
Do any of you guys think I should sell my 64gb oneplus one and get a blackberry classic??
Why didn't they just edit the beginning if he needed a second for a text?
It was a joke.
Very nice looking device
Have two Classics on order for the business... no these phones aren't Ferraris they are Cadillacs, comfortable and get the job done.
Look at tis 27 dislikes lol that shows how many iphone/android users are checking out the classic! Lovin it!
oh man seeing this video just make me miss using my old Blackberry Bold 3 which i use 2010-2013 late. Damn i miss the keyboard and the email on blackberry. To be honest i have a hard time typing on my current iPhone 5S. I have quite a big finger but i never encounter such problem with my old Blackberry. Haih only people who once use the Blackberry know how good they are the only thing they lacking is the OS nothing more nothing less.
You could get a cheap Q10 on Amazon or something and have the best of both worlds.
StrickenWithFear nahh i have a iPhone 5S which is on contracts until this October. i didnt like Q10 if i have a chance to have a 2nd phone i probably go for BB Passport
rid241 Ok. Hope that works out for you.
Dose the classics run on spring
+ Vegas Chanteuse I was kidding lol.
Whats the song playing on the background
When are you getting an app???
PLEEEEEASE do a video on your Tesla. I'd love to see the car from the eyes of a techie
brutal car crash out of nowhere lol
Wish they could make it with other keyboards than english.
10 minute first look!? What's the full review 2 hours!?
Believe it or not we still didn't see the full review of the passport maybe this channel is only for first impressions D:
I like blackberry but I'm good with my windows phone 8.1
Why does blackberry remind me if pebble?
classic vs q10?
Damn. That ad is giving me the creeps.
You look like Michael from GTA.
Blackberry for getting emails 3 seconds earlier and android for everything else.
Blackberry market share will continue to decline as those people using blackberry retire. No one that's used the top end smartphones want to be limited by what Blackberry doesn't offer. Blackberry is a perfect example about a company that doesn't adopt to change.
I feel like I should've waited for this before I signed a contract with the galaxy alpha. It's fast and all that but there's just something missing... It's not organized... it's not productive... it's not practical.
Im keeping my Curve alive for now
I love it!
Ummm.... Your the one taking a selfie with an iPhone LOL
Nice phone but I don't see myself dropping my iPhone for that phone.
I want this phone
Guys, I have currently an Iphone 4s but it isn' t good enough anymore, should I get the classic?
Depends of which OS system you like the most. IOS, Android, Blackberry 10, or windows phone? What will you primarily use it for? Apps? To fit in with others? For business? It all depends on you.
StrickenWithFear I like the the ios but I would like a change to be honest. I use my Iphone the most for texting, calling, mailing and occasionally gaming. A phone that is capable to edit documents would be a really nice option.
feltrook383 Then blackberry or windows phones works especially well for things like documents. And it seems like for everything else it is that you want too.
StrickenWithFear Thanks for the advice! I will most likely pick one up laters this week!
The only thing that I hasitate about is that all the reviewers say it is too slow :-/
feltrook383 Most of the people who own them say it's not all that slow.
I've never been interested in any BlackBerry phone and I'm still not. I only watched this because I like watching TechnoBuffalo videos. ^_^
Also, it would have been nice if he did a glass durability smash test. Toughphones are becoming more and more in demand ! Americans are so dam naive (I'm American so I can say this), why pay so much for something that will ultimately break?
Or bent
I don't think Jon knows the definition of murder.
Your point? Killing another individual because of texting/driving is homicide.
Thats the thing, by definition, your'e both wrong. Homicide definition: "the deliberate and unlawful killing of one person by another; murder." Murder definition: "the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another." Deliberate definition: "done consciously and intentionally." Synonyms of deliberate: intentional, calculated, conscious, intended, planned, studied, knowing, willful, purposeful, purposive, premeditated, preplanned. Of course people killing other people because of drunk driving/texting is horrendous, but it is not "murder" unless the death was intentional and pre meditated. Of course murder and homicide sound more juicy and pack more of a punch, however, they are incorrect in these circumstances.
chigimonky Good lord you're like a little walking dictionary, aren't you? Did you just learn those words in class yesterday? Rofl I could tell from your original comment that you'd be some pompous contrarian troll.
If you really want to discuss the trivial semantics of Jon's statement, then technically it's not murder. But it most certainly is homicide. Ever heard of vehicular homicide? Texting/driving that leads to the death of another individual is vehicular *homicide*.
Furthermore, not only are the definitions you have provided incorrect (according to legal definitions), but the conclusions you have drawn from them are illogical as well (the transitive property applies to numbers, not words). The root of the word homicide on its own describes nothing more than the act of one human killing the other. As with all -cide words that encompass the act of killing, there is nothing inherently lawful or unlawful about homicide, or suicide, or genocide, or etc. And why is your definition for murder incorrect? Well there are countless counterexamples, but for one, ever heard of second-degree murder? There is a legal emphasis placed on classifying a killing that is not premeditated/planned, within the second degree. However, such an act would, by law, still be prosecuted as murder. And the law trumps any dictionary definition you're going to pull out of your ass, not to mention the fact that the latter is often rife with inconsistencies and contradictions (especially when exploiting definitions/synonyms as you do), regardless of which resource or version you refer to.
But at the end of the day, I'm still missing the point you're attempting to make. Don't text and drive. That's all Jon was implying. The words he used to make that point are irrelevant. So unless you're trying to say that texting and driving is good or that Jon's point was not "don't text and drive," then all you're doing is being belligerent over something incredibly besides the point.
I think u don't know the definition yourself. Murder does not have to include a gun....
Email sent waaaay faster? Did he say "a good 3 seconds faster than iPhone and Android"??? GTFOH! Yeah they still hit that out of the park! lol I'll stick with the others on that note... smh
