I have owned 16520, 116520 and 116500. They are all great…I think the 116520 is the one to get right now. I think that watch has a big future ahead of it.

Out of all of them, I'd pick the previous gen 116500. Great proportions and solid watch, all hype aside.

Interesting that when they introduced the 6-digit series in 2000, they kept the bezel numbers horizontal on the _steel_ 116520, but made them radial on the _gold_ models, such as the 116518.
I observed this before,
Radial starts with precious metal zeniths on straps. 16518 16519 and uber rare platinum 16516.
6 digit gets straight on full steel and full yellow only 116520 and 116528.
Full metal white and rose gold gets radial when released
On strap they are all radial.
I go to the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona race every year with Lamborghini, and nearly everyone there is wearing the current generation Panda Ceramic Daytona, you will see dozens. One of the race engineers had the steel bezel white faced Daytona though and it is what stood out from the crowd. Beautiful. I’m definitely in the market for a good one.
Such a cool story, and I can totally imagine how that nice steel bezel would’ve popped amongst all the ceramic ones. Love that you got to see it in its natural habitat too - the racetrack 😀

Zenith white dial. Love the symmetry that isn't there in all models after
True, that’s one thing Rolex didn’t manage to improve on when they introduced the 4130 - you’d think they’d have thought of that when building a brand new movement 🤷🏻♂️
While i like the symmetry on the Zenith dial. I would go for the the 116520. certified preowned though. White dial, as I have the black dial BB Chrono. 😅
I used to have the BB Chrono too :) one of my favorite things about it was the look it has with the metal bezel (the current panda ones are nice but I wish they hadn't put the black bezel insert into them)
This model feels much more utilitarian than the modern ones
So true - with it really staying true to that design from the late 80s when watches were still very much used as tools you can definitely see that in the 116520 while the 116500LN and the new 126500LN both look decidedly more luxury IMO
is the older clasp not as good?
The 5 digit references (Zenith Daytonas) had the older, stamped out clasp, the 116520 onwards had the newer milled clasp with the Easy Link - so much more like the current Daytona
@@ShahLusso sorry i mean the buckle lock system, older 116520 uses the "hole" style, right?
@petemorbius3936 yes this one still had the hole clasp - I’m not 100% sure though if that remained all the way till the 116500LN or if they did an update on the 116520 before they replaced it
@@ShahLusso it was updated after 2007-2008 (to be same as current rolex clasp). i wonder if the "hole" system if ok? ease of use?
@petemorbius3936 super easy to use, the newer clasp may be marginally more secure with the lift lock (but let’s face it as soon as the clamshell is open your watch isn’t coming off by accident)
Personally I find it as a nice medium between the modern one and the old friction fit clasps, definitely not a dealbreaker IMO
