@@tommyapples8490 this is a horribly inefficient approach to obtaining information. "The longer the better" - Actually, no, the more concise and relevant the better. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to knock the kid but I found myself jumping around like crazy to try get the pieces of information that were relevant and skipping the stuff such as "THE MONSOON IS THE BEST, IT'S CRAZY" type of rambles. He has a lot of good information to share but I don't think it's inappropriate to delivery constructive feedback (not that this comment was constructive above), and suggest that perhaps he re-watch his own video and clip out just the parts that are crucial and he will likely be shocked to find that the video went from 39 minutes to 5 minutes.

I heat up my drill bits, using a culinary torch, before drilling. Cuts through the plastic like butter and seals the edges so there are no sharp spots. Only heat until it will slightly melt the plastic and reheat as needed. Have never cracked a single plastic project, using this method. Holding a board on the other side of the plastic is a pain, but it can work. Tape just leaves a sticky mess on my drill and my tub. Make sure you're not using your good wood or metal cutting, bits. The heat can dull them.

  • @onsightitify
    @onsightitify 4 года назад +114

A few tweaks I would add for the fan setup. You can place the detached fan screen INSIDE the tub (sterilized first) for a more flush fit. Then you can use micropore tape to completely cover the fan hole on the outside of the tub. Once taped, screw the fan on. This will still allow FAE with the benefit of filtering the air. Note: When in spawn mode, tape over the fan with painter's masking tape. You can take the tape off when ready for fruiting.

Toss it on a red hot stove, grab a pair of pliers and depending on how hot you get it you can knock 2-3 holes out per heating w/ no cracks or jagged edges where moisture and bacteria can build.

Better to use a fog machine that utilizes a humidity guage inside the tub rather than a mister.. when the fan comes on and the humidity drops, you can set the guage to come on when it humidity hits 70 or 75% then turns back off at 85-90% RH, wherever you want the guage turn turn on/off at, it can be at any RH you want..and it won't come on again until the fan blows out the CO2 3 or 4 times per day or it shouldn't
If you've got the right temps and correct sub depth and saturated at field capacity.. i use a pseudo casing with left over sub.
I haven't used automated in awhile, now I use 2x 2" inch holes down low on both of the long side right in line with my sub line at 3.5 inches so I'll put the holes at 4 for my 0.5 case. Then I'll put one on each of the narrow ends of the tub about as high as I can go, then I'll cover them with either a filter disc (once I introduce fruiting conditions at 80% colonization) or 2 layers of microtape after removing the masking tape that was on there to prevent FAE during colonization of my substrate. I don't even have to mist or fan, the humidity stays perfect and since it's a small room my HEPA filter inside cleans the air while also moving the air around to help out FAE, so It's set it and forget until harvest. I just keep and eye on the temp outside the tub, i like 70-72 in the room because that will mean it'll be 72-75 inside the tub, it's always 2-3 degrees warmer inside.
Biggest issue people run into is taking the lids off constantly which changes the humidity inside and it can never stay consistent, so it has to basically reset and rebuild the humidity which dries the cake out more and more each time, it lowers the temperature inside the tub by multiple degrees each time it's removed.. as long as you aren't getting those fuzzy feet that are trying to walk up the base of the mushroom thats short and fat like a chode, you're fine when it comes to FAE. I almost feel like people need to invest in a C02 reader, just to make them feel more at ease. Leave the lid on, just look at it through the sides and you'll know if there's any issues based off what the mycelium and/or mushrooms are telling you.. Another issue is over misting, people mist directly on the cake while there's pins, thats a good way to get aborts. If I do mist, I never mist the cake once there's pins and i try not to at all once after i put it into fruiting conditions because it retains so much moisture.. but, if i do, I always mist the sides and the lid and I make sure there's no big water droplets that will run down and drop on the mycelium/pins. The second flush I'll mist the sides and lid real well, then put the lid back on like the first flush.. the 3.5" sub depth with a 0.5" pseudo casing layer will provide plenty of water and nutrients for the mushrooms to pull from, it won't be getting low on moisture... yes it costs more in spawn and grain to do it, but if you only have 2-2.5 inches of sub then by the time it fully colonizes it's going to shrink about a half inch or more depending on the humidity you retained and with a fan you're going to lose more.. so do you want to lose money going towards good grain and sub, or spend less money and just not get the yields? Either way it's a loss, id rather get the big flushes cause honestly, a few grams pays for the extra materials. With a think cake the next flush will be even smaller as the cake shrinks and so on as it runs out of water and nutrients, that's why many people can't get a third flush even with soaking the cake... So it drastically limits your potential 2nd and 3rd flush, especially depending on the type of mushroom, some of them can suck up a lot of water lol. But with all that said, it always depends a lot on the genetics if they're high yielding or good for multiple flushes. Even if it's the same species or sub-species but with two different genetics, one might flush a really strong canopy once, then get progressively worse until its no longer worth it to maintain. While another might not be a solid canopy the first flush, but it has some pretty consistent flushes so it may weigh out better in the end but be a drastic difference in potency. All of that depends on the genetics...we can only give it the things it needs to be able to grow to it's full potential that it's genetics allows for, thats it. Which you'll learn what it likes and if you take a clone from the first run with a mushroom with solid genetics, the second run it'll be used to those conditions, the tub size, temps, moisture, the type of substrate and grain spawn, so the mycelium and mushroom adapts and starts thriving better if you repeat those same conditions. That doesn't mean you can get good results with poor conditions though, theres just variables that they're able to get used too.
That's what sucks about multispore...you've got no clue which of the genetics is going to germinate, no idea about any of it's traits like you can easily find out with LC or spawning from agar straight from the guy who isolated/cloned it. You may get an amazing one in a multispore, I've gotten pretty lucky before, sporeworks is always pretty solid, and then you can clone the best looking mushroom to agar or a slant to keep the genetics to work with in the future and keep cloning the different generations from there.. Or you'll get a multispore that germinated that turned out to be trash, either small yields but good potency (or small and weak, worst of both worlds), or like me the very first time, I had huge yields but literally zero potency and I mean zilch, 8 grams and not even a microdose. Back then I thought i did something wrong but i couldn't figure it out since the looked so healthy, i was pissed, but I finally realized it wasn't my fault... i did everything i was supposed to do and i grew a lot more than i expected and i could take what I learned moving forward, so its never a total waste as long as you gain experience in both what to do, aswell as not to do. I don't think that spore shop even exists anymore, I know I've heard nothing good about them but it's my fault they tricked me with a gimmick. Since I was new back then i saw they were selling a spore syringe with water/activated charcoal so it was solid black, it was to help prevent contams, which, maybe it did exactly what is said cause I didn't lose a single BRF cake, but man, did they ever put the wrong genetics inside... I went to sporeworks after that, best place for a multispore IMO. Now I get genetics by LC syringe or on Slants that I can store for long periods of time in the fridge to slow down colonization and transfer it to LC when needed... I've heard vaccum sealed and stored away in the fridge away from light they can last a couple years on slants, even a year or two in LC in the fridge that has been slowed down. I've even heard of people freezing colonized grain bags, slants, and LC, but I've never had the guts to try it. Maybe if I run into some not so good genetic material I'll freeze it in multiple mediums for 2-3 years vacuum sealed to prevent freezer burn, then try bringing to room temp slowly and then do a transfer from the slant or LC to a agar plate and then grain into some substrate to see if it begins to colonize, or if it continues colonizing the grain bag if it hadnt full colonized before freezing. Which I'll probably mark the growth with a sharpie just incase it does something weird like slowly grow on the surface or something while frozen
You can buy a hose splitter to do two tubs, but youll need to refill your fog machine up more often.. remember to remove the hose and machine every few days to steralize with alcohol.
The fan is great... and the awesome thing about the fogger, it'll come on any time it's needed without the fan if RH isn't where it needs to be. And it's not a mister, it's a legitimate fog just like when water evaporates and then falls back down. Just be careful if you point the hose upwards, you can get water drips so it'd be better to add it to the top straight out and fog will fill the whole tub equally and basically the cake will only absorb what it needs and there's water build up on the cake.

@@repinsJ I’m still confused about the process of spawning to bulk. With BRF cakes you just leave them in the jars until they’re fully colonized. With monotubs, your grains must be fully colonized and then you introduce them to your bulk substrate. Then your bulk substrate has to fully colonize before moving to fruiting conditions. I look at this stage as being similar to birthing and dunking your BRF cakes. What should the mono tub look like before moving to fruiting conditions? Obviously the tub is much larger than a mason jar, so do you replicate the conditions of the mason jar (a closed system with small gas exchange holes) before starting the misting and fanning process?

I then cased the sub with 50/50 mix and 6 days later I put in fruiting conditions. I did not start misting until day two of fruiting. You will see pins at this time possibly. once I put to fruiting I fan 3-6 times a day, 3 times auto from timer then 3 additional manually. on day two to day three I start the monsoon mister every eight hours and leave the automated set up and check on it once a day without having to do much at all. I used medical tape after removing the painters tape on the large holes during fruiting and left the small holes on the bottom uncovered. I have pins on day two of fruiting only fanning for the first day or two RH after fanning drops to 88 after a few minutes it's back to 93-95 RH temps remain around 76-78 love this set up. Ghetto tek = polyfill; any big box store in the craft area.
Pro tek = 0.2micron filters; lots of options to choose from. For this design in particular you could probably fit syringe filters in all those holes. The filters restrict the air flow and more holes may be preferable. Or, use a high pressure air pump like a nebulizer and push fresh clean air in, while pulling the old stale air out.
      www.amazon.com/s?k=syringe+filters&ref=nb_sb_noss_1
I would advise doing your cycles opposite of how he describes in this video; first run the fan, then the mister. The moving air will dry things out a bit. It also more close replicates natural conditions, where the wind picks up and then the rain comes.

Personally, I’ve found that you really don’t need artificial light at all. If you’re going to use artificial light, you can fruit tubs perfectly fine using the light on the ceiling of a room, and even just with the natural light that comes in the window. You also only really need 4-6 hours of light a day, not 12. I’ve tested 12 hours vs 4-6 hours and the results were identical. So don’t waste money on electricity doing it for 12. Imo best bet is to use natural light. In the window or even just in the room. Super easy, no hassle.

You mentioned using the mono tub for colonization, then take it into fruiting. So do you put the grain bags in the mono tub and keep it dark, or do you colonize in the tub with everything sealed up? Total newbe, ...I don't want to regret never trying these, and I'm not getting any younger. I want to be my own hero.

I bought the same timer you shown in the video and it doesn't do 3 times a day 8 hours perfectly inbetween like the monsoon does. You can only customize a on and off time for all 3 preseta in 1, you cant edit each individual preset like you explained. I bought the one from your link. If you could explain better how to set up the timer or explain exactly what one you are using to do 60 seconds on, for 3 times a day with 8 hours in between that would be great. I have a tub going and bought everything to find I cant sync my fans to the monsoon.

The 1" "circular drill bit", is called a Paddle bit the one you described would also work but entails a lot more care in its' use.

@@jomammy7786 Not a forstner bit. You would most definitely not want to use a forstner bit for this application. Those are designed to be used in a drill press only for drilling flat-bottom holes in wood.

I found that when I heated the plastic with my heat gun before I drilled or cut it out with a razor blade. That it stopped cracking at all.

You can use a soldering iron to cut your holes if you dont have a drill bit. Its slower, but less chances of cracking your tub.

to put an end to all the confusion regarding placement of fan (inside or out) that I have seen in the comments. Willy has placed it on the outside with the airflow directed into the tub. I base this comment on the frame in the video at, 23:51/39:06, where you can clearly see the fan and its grill on the same side of the lid as the, STERILITE, name. I like this setup and am in the process of assembling mine now. If I want to take off for a couple or more days then not to worry. Pluss it will help the little guys grow up strong and healthy knowing they live in a stable home not to mention it will cut down on those peski little contamination pinch points. See yall (way) out there; )...
