    In this video I dispel some myths and common misunderstandings surrounding temperature and humidity in mycology. I also talk about how these two factors, in addition to FAE (Fresh Air Exchange) all play an important role in producing pins, and how they are all connected. Avoid the pitfalls and misinformation out there surrounding these topics, it is a lot simpler than some make it out to be.

    Hello Sage, I noticed you are answering questions on this vid so here is a comment and question. I’m new at this. So, in reading, I took the temp and humidity constraints to heart. My background is measurement and control so of course I decided to automate. Purchased a heat mat, reptile fogger and an Inkbird controller. The temps here are running cold this time of year and the house is run around 62, so thought I needed to heat things up a bit.
    I purchased BRF jars and liquid injectables, and got the jars to colonize. After birthing I put them in the bin on a pearlite base and learned pretty quick that the fogger was way overkill, the inside was soaking, and that the Rh sensor/controller was not much use in this application. Thanks for explaining the distinction between humidity at the mycelium/air interface vs the atmospheric Rh. And that evaporation is key. Never heard that before.
    Question: Once the cakes are birthed is it OK to just leave the lid ajar for FAE? My setup now is an aquarium air pump with a HEPA filter. That said, the inside of the bin is constantly covered in water droplets due to the colder outside temps. (I’m holding 70-74 in the bin).
    Last Question: I have some cakes that appear identical to the others, which have pinned, fruited and been harvested, but these cakes don’t pin. They don’t show signs of contamination, appear fully colonized…. Can I induce pinning?
    Great content. Thanks

    I like when you drop the thermostat and commented on how sturdy it is...good one! 😂
    Helpful info as always. Summer vs fall temps and humidity has been a learning experience obviously on temps and moisture but noticed big difference on evaporation levels. They're at the "perfect" temp and humidity but slower process now and more ab**ts. I overcompenstated by spraying due to noted decrease in evaporation and dry look, then got soggy fuzzy feet. Prone to fuzzy feet here. I increased FAE and thats seemed to help. Summertime was my friend. I thought fall would be even better. It's mildly frustrating but of course just enjoying process and learning from it.

Between that and the humidity, they all just aborted as soon as I went into fruting. I have a ton of spawn right now, just trying decide if I want to do a casing and wait for the substrate to colonize or if I just want to do psuedo which means my spawn needs to FULLY colonized. May try both, lol.

    As you know, I have a pretty loose and easy attitude to my stuff..
    My Shh Room is using a wifi thermostat which is controlling my central heating.. just in this one tiny little room ..
    But the temperature outside the house dropped from 15 degrees c .. to.. 0.. in a day.. and the humidity from the sudden increase in central heating from the radiator went UP..
    However, my usual tub temperature went 5 or 7 degrees higher than the room temperature because the humidity in the tub couldn't draw the heat energy out into the rest of the ambient room ...as it was already saturated..
    so, the tub temp went up fro, 23 c... to 27.5 C!...
    crazy eh?
    If you get what I am saying here?
    Dry air will draw warm moist air into it, which will cause a drop in heat related energy... if the room humidity is as high as the tub humidity.. it would have that action.

    Hi, thank you for your great explanations and video. Question. Relative humidity is the percentage of water that the air COULD hold but not representative of the actual air content. I think a much better indicator would be dew point. So using your eyes, do you have a system to guess the humidity in your mono-tub? Also how do you know how hot your substrate is compared to the surrounding air temp in the mono-tub?

    • @Mycophilia
      @Mycophilia  8 месяцев назад

      No need to know the humidity of the tub, you just need to make sure the tub’s surface is healthy. And it’s very easy to do that using just your eyes. Check out my video “proper surface conditions for fruiting”, in it I go over how your surface should look

    • @Mycophilia
      @Mycophilia  7 месяцев назад +2

      No. Never put such devices inside tubs, they’re not meant for that. You don’t need to know the exact conditions inside the tub, it’s very much for background info as I say, to keep track of general trends. Use proper techniques in making the tub, and use your eyes to judge the health of it.

    Hey Sage,
    V.P.D is Vapour Pressure deficit.
    It relates to plants.
    Plants transpire via their Stomata. Inside the stomata the R.H is 100%.
    The difference in R.H of the stomata and the environmental RH drives the plants ability to transpire. The more they transpire the more water and nutrients they can draw from the rootzone.
    This difference between environmental RH and Stomata is know as VPD.
    Plants require different VPD at different temperatures and stages of their lives.
    Unless mushrooms have stomata, VPD is of no use to the myco grower.
    Keep on rocking mate, love the channel and it must be stressfull negotiating YT invisible policies.
    All the best

    • @tommyyann6665
      @tommyyann6665 8 месяцев назад

      Vapor pressure deficit (VPD) is calculated as the difference between the amount of moisture that's actually in the air and the amount of moisture that air could hold at saturation. VPD is similar to relative humidity, which uses a percentage to describe how much moisture is in the air.

    • @tommyyann6665

      yes, but isn't it unpleasant to heat your bedroom to 75°F? My bedroom, for example, is just 65°F. I can't grow mushrooms at these temperatures and you shouldn't get the mushrooms to fruit on a heating mat. I'm looking for a solution

    No clue if you'll see this bc its a "old" video but i made 20 agar plates using 750ml water with 15g malt extract and 15g agar and every single one contaminated before i even had the chance to clone a mushroom. Can't find answers from Google other than the petri dishes could've come contaminated even tho they said they were sterilized. Just seeing if you would have any ideas other than that.

    • @Mycophilia
      @Mycophilia  8 месяцев назад

      If this isn't your first time making agar and you haven't had any issues making it this way before, and the only thing that changed is your petri dishes, then yes it sounds like the dishes were not properly sterilized out of the factory.

      @@Mycophilia my 1st time making them but I did them in 2 separate batches 1 sleeve of dishes at a time. I had my fan off and my bed over my air vent and had my mouth covered with my shirt. It was weird tho because all the contam was almost a full circle following the edge of the dishes but none was in the center.
      I'll try it in a still air box next go and if that doesn't work I might just buy mini Mason jars to insure they get sterilized.

    And another thing is that's not true not all mushrooms will continue to fruit if they're at too high of a temperature there's mushrooms that like are from Mexico in areas like this but a majority of the mushrooms most mushrooms won't what happens is the mycelium starts growing more rapid and in this instant they stop the production of fruiting you might get some strange that you get one or two flushes out but after that they start growing weird like if they have too much CO2 and or soggy not like waterlog but you can tell that there's something going on wrong in there and it's from the Heat see when the mycelium starts growing more rapid that makes the mycelium crate more CO2 from the mycelium eating the substrate and I know this for a fact I've seen this personally matter of fact this last summer I just moved into this apartment and the apartment has no good heat temperature control or anything so the room that I have on my gross stuff in was getting up to 100 110° who knows but it was way up there and yeah I lost several different blocks because of it so you can't sit here and tell me that he doesn't affect the grow because it does and then not just that as the mycelium consumes the substrate it's putting off heat itself so if your room is up to about 100° you better bet your substrate is about 120 130 degrees maybe even more
