The Declaration of Independence is arguably one of the most (deliberately) misinterpreted documents in American history... particularly the line "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." Everyone today thinking Jefferson meant every man from every race from every part of the Earth is equal in every conceivable way. Even Jefferson didn't believe that.
The same man that wrote that all-too famous line also said "Nothing is more certainly written in the book of fate than that these people are to be free. Nor is it less certain that the two races, equally free, cannot live in the same government." Jefferson wanted to free the slaves, but did not want to keep them here because he did not believe they were equal nor did they belong here. He wanted to ship them off back to Africa where they originated from and belong.

"He wanted to ship them off back to Africa where they originated from and belong."
This is exactly what happened between 1822 and 1861. The result was Liberia becoming independent in 1847. After which the Americo-Liberians exploited the native Africans in the area, which resulted in civil war erupting in 1989.
