The walled lumbercamps, the house hop, the stone drop to the farm; all of that withouth even thinking about it. That was unique and next level af from Rubenstock, and even more, Jbatong played it well. Great game.
You’re never going to see this. And it will be buried in the comments but I wanted to say thank you. I used to play this game a lot and you got me back into it last year. I bought Aoe2 Definitive because you inspired me and I play nearly every day. Thanks again. You make my daily experience great and I thought you should know.
Me and 3 other dudes in my small group of friends were bit by the AOE2 bug because of T90. It all started like an year ago (maybe two) with just watching TheViper vids, but we just couldn't follow what he was doing back then. T90 basically taught us how to play properly and we got hooked into AOE2 in a whole new way. Just goes to show, it just takes one really passionate guy to motivate a whole bunch of people.
What if, as soon as Jibatong spots the rush, he cancels Feudal and goes back to creating villagers? He should then have a vill lead, because he lost less TC time researching than Rubenstock did rebuilding. Half the vills are involved in the TC fight, so even a small vill lead means a big difference in eco at this stage. After that, take even trades wherever possible. Match the opponent’s TC fire, match their TC repairs (send vills from food to wood - you have 500 from cancelling Feudal!), fight any vills that go out of TC range. The longer you keep this up while keeping your TC alive and producing, the more your lead should grow. It’s more complicated if, say, the opponent’s TC ranges your berries (which would force you to farm to maintain vill production), or if you’re vs Persians (in that case you’ll have to fall back and build a new TC). But neither is the case here. The important thing is to adapt. As soon as you spot the rush, your strategy is out the window. You’re defending a TC drop now, whether you like it or not!
After 6 months of supporting the stream and consuming AoE vids daily, I finally mustered up the courage to buy DE and play multiplayer for the first time ever! This in itself has been an amazing experience but last night, after a week of owning the game, I actually got in to a commie game, on DE, with T90 playing.. I don't think I've ever felt hype like the hype I was feeling then 11 Anyways, Salmon Boi, if you see this, thanks for everything my dude, keep up the amazing work, look forward to HC and you never know, maybe more commie games in future!
His play reminds me a lot of chess players who try to complicate the board quickly and move the game away from the standard book moves. Ruben got in and complicated the game, forcing Jibatong away from his standard "book move" start, and made him make really precise decisions to try and survive his pressure.
@Noah well I know I play chess in a sportsclub though there is a tiny difference in having to decide like instantly or thinking about it for half an hour to decide then.

So, I wonder if we can have a low elo rematch like once a month have a low elo tournament. Let us vote for the best of some odd number and bring it on. If they'll come rematch. LoL
Few ideas to prevent the TC drop to be efficient. Build single palisade walls near enough of each other to leave no room for a TC to be built before the enemy villagers get to your base (no need to completely encircle your base with walls that way). Second option: ignore the TC drop and just get enough wood and stone to build a new TC. You'll have less idle time. Make sure some squares are covered with palisades to prevent a second TC drop. It's not as if he didn't know he was gonna be rushed.
T90 : What could he have done for this game to go differently ? Lierrey, in the background since 10 minutes ago : resiiiiiiiiiiign OMG resiiiiiiiiiiiiiiign
Rubenstock did so many things here where he continuously won very small fights - so small fights no one else would bother. But Ruben did so much work at micro level. Amazing
I watched Emplemon's video about Hungrybox and the Smash Bros Melee community recently, and I couldn't help but think how alien so much of it seemed to me as someone who watches AoE2 as an esport. And by alien, I mean our competitive community seems WAY better. Or at least way less toxic. Part of it is Microsoft keeping the game fresh, but even when it was just AoC I think it had a different culture, and I'm grateful for that.
It's not really difficult to imagine why a strategy game for PC without a real tutorial (previously) - which has disguised itself as a history lecture - has a more mature community than a console game based on popular characters which was aggressively marketed to children. SSB was all downhill from the original anyway.
What if you wall around your TC when expecting a TC drop so no TC can be built in the range of your TC? Not even continuous wall, just a few blocks around.
I wonder when players are going to start palisading their own TC area to prevent the drop. Another alternative is to sneak off some villagers during the initial TC war and send them to a totally different part of the map and start walling off an area that you can build your new TC in.
Palisading is too expensive that early in the game (mostly in villager time) to counter a strat that "should never work". Pros play greedy, they won't go for this kind of defense.
Scout the area between you and your opponent. As soon as they send that amount of villagers forward, build palisade walls at three tile spacing about 5 tiles away from your town center in a pattern so that they will only be able to build with villagers within the 6 tile range of your town center and can use your TC to snip their building villagers, or too far away to attack with their's.
This rush hits so early that it's hard to scout it without sacrificing efficiency in your own build. With this matchup there's no reason to expect a TC drop. Jibatong pushes a deer to get food for scouts, and because of this he doesn't even know where his opponent is when the vills show up (look at the scout's movements on the minimap). To scout the TC drop he'd have to slow down his scout rush, which is bad if the opponent is doing anything but TC dropping. Same goes for blocking space around your TC; it slows the scout build because of the wood cost and building time. Basically you'd have to predict the TC drop before you can scout it. Pros won't do that if they think they can defend the rush (whether anyone can actually counter it remains to be seen)

You can send vils to the northern and southern corner far away from your TC. Collect whatever resources you want there and wall in a base. Palisade wall the wood line facing your TC, wall off the gold and stone. Delay for as long as you can till everything is walled, Vil fight to the death. Reboom at one of the established bases to the north or south. The goal is to hit castle age in those 30 minutes before he leaves dark age.
He should have built his tower to range his stone, berries and the wood-line on the back left. Also, don't let one vil wall in your other tree line when you have three vils right there. Just kill him! The second TC was PERFECT. It was on the wood and a tree line, he needed to save that and, again, a tower there would have helped if placed correctly. Also, with the second TC, he had the time and the vils to drop palisades so Rubenstock couldn't drop a TC near it. It's minor things, like @T90Official said, but you can't get flustered by the pressure.
Is a possible counter option to branch off just a few vills to gold and start building archers to counter Rubs villagers? It seems like a good nuclear option once you lose your TC. Then you can relocate elsewhere with archer support
Rubenstock is the most entertaining player in the world!! If he's not in Hidden Cup 3, I'll be so incredibly sad D: You should make a poll for people to vote for at least 2 players that viewers find most interesting and give them free a pass! XD
I would agree Rubenstock play well in game, knowing how many villagers on wood, how many villagers to repair the tc, and where to attack. Jibatong on the other hand seems very surprised by the strategy, and struggle to defend. A few months ago, i watch a similar game between Viper and Vivi, with Viper doing the same strategy, and Vivi easily counter and defend this strategy by doing nothing. No garrison villager, no repairing TC. do the math here, you are still way ahead of another player if u do nothing. No 10 idle villager in TC, less time idle walking before building new TC. just let him kill your tc with TC fire, then rebuild a new one.
@@36424567254 Not to sound mean but no duh...you're obviously going to have vills nearby. It's your TC. Unless you're the Khmer or Saracens you'll inevitably have farms around your TC but even then I doubt you won't have a vill or two nearby to react with. I suppose he might get lucky and sneak a bunch a vills into your base before you have a chance to react but that really shouldn't happen if you're paying attention.
You should impose "color" to the player as well as "hero name", for hidden cup. It will make it easier to follow, and to guess player. And if a match up as the same color, you use blue/red but at least it will be an exception
And good luck with that when you're under attack at your base. You often see a player lose when they advance while defending (how many times have you heard T90 say “but what does Imp give him?”) and it seems the same applies at this stage of the game too.
Rubenstock is.... incredible, those finish players are crazy, they always think out of the box, try risky and bold "wonder what will happen if we try this" they are the ones who write new metas, I swear.
I don't recall ever seeing this, but is there a video where both players try to TC rush the other player at the same time? That would be a proper base swap...
I think during the "vill war phase" the feudal age player should make an archery range with the wood instead of a tc first up to make a few archers to win the vill war phase, then re town centre
Once you've played against this once and realize it's coming it's fairly easy to wall off your woodlines. literally all he had to do was wall off his woodlines and he would be fine. Once that is done you can put people on stone and keep your woodlines safe or go for the other guys woodlines. heck you can even go castle age at that point. Just wall off the woodlines and you're fine. Be aware of the wall hop with the house as well ofc. Seems fairly simply as you'll always have the advantage being in feudal and can tower
What about Cumans because they would have the extra TC in Feudal that could make things interesting. What does Rubenstock do if there's a TC on each end of the map?
someone should make a rubenstock nothing game/map, basically just khmer with many patches of trees, stone, gold, and animals on the map, and the only structures allowed is Palisade walls, lumber camps, stone/gold camps, Town Centers, houses, farms, TC, and Towers, and the only units allowed are villagers, i feel like that would be a fun thing to watch honestly.
I think that a correctly placed tower like this offers the least in counterplay options to the attacker. I am unsure about how an attacker could react to this.
Which wouldn't work if you had enough bills in your TC still to clean up on the attacking vills... I wonder if moving your TC's location would work, but I think the increased wood costs of having to use 2 TC's vs 1 would be too much strain.
ObiwanNekody I think the most important thing is protect your own woodlines. Your going to have a better economy provided you don’t get pushed off wood while defending. if you can range the enemy wood vils while also damaging the opposing tc with a tower you would most likely win the game. The main issue is getting enough wood for a blacksmith.
Can anyone tell me why the Khmer free farm changes haven't hit DE in my copy of the game? Idk if it's because I bought it from the Microsoft store and not steam, but the Khmer don't have the "can farm without returning to mill" feature yet. What gives?
Rubenstock needs to take a page out of Noboru's book and combine this with the blacksmith villagers. Alternatively, Rubenstock vs Noboru showmatch when?
well with a 38min feudal, blacksmith upgrades wont be coming before its basically over anyway. It works because he start early and keeps pressuring, there i no way to get to feudel and put down a blacksmith much earlier than this and still denying the enemy to build up their own economy like this. So pretty sure the khmer farming does way more to the strategy than inca blacksmith vills do
Guys, dont go hard on me, since i havent played this game in years, BUT!, cant be this big rush be contained by using simple 1x1 palisades? just see the map as a grid, remember the TC size, and place well measured 1x1 palisades on worst areas for you, so enemy TC cant be dropped in your face, you can also lead/force the enemy to drop his TC on a certain spot by blocking space with palisades, and if you cant avoid the strat at all, scouting to spot enemy vills rushing to u, prepare a defensive line of your own vills, and well... fight for your territory before he drops the TC lol. (i understand that at this point game will be a total mess).
As a Starcraft Player who recently came to enjoy watching AOE i dont understand how you could ever lose to this type of rush. You should have such a huge eco advantage as the defender. The opposing vills dont do anything while walking to the other side of the map. On top of that they dont gather ressources while building the new TC. And on top of that the aggressor should have less vills because he cant build any while he has no TC. So the defender has more workers and more efficient workers while having no real disadvantage. What am i missing? Is this just a difference in experience with this particular situation and the attacker simply handels it so much better? I can totally imagine that for amateurs but on a pro level?
@@blaubeer8039 Rubenstock actually takes the vill lead while Jibatong is advancing... which makes the feudal tech even worse for him! He's actually part way up when he sees the rush, but if he cancels the upgrade he still keeps the vill lead.

Show us the spring game. I think I he would love it if you upload yet another defeat of him 😂 tks for that great game. Why is it called the BIG Rush???
Rush barracks for militia? I have feel like three militia could make massive difference defending own woodlines, especially if you know whats coming. In fact I would love to see that against Lithuenian drush.
i wonder, when you get town center rushed. wouldnt just be better to ignore it, let if pop your town center and then just make another one near a gold/stone ? would basically (mathematically) mean that your opponent just wasted 2 min traveling across the map to be in the exact same situation as you.
This still should never work, if Jibatong wouldve built a couple houses and palisades he never wouldve been tc dropped (he KNEW for a fact it was coming). Even if he didnt he shouldve never attempted the tc on the gold/berries and just built it near the stone the first time and towered all of ruben stocks res in his base and then rubenstocks base. Theres NO reason to lose to this if you KNOW its coming.
We need an AI that only ever does Rubenstock's strategy so people can come up with a counter to it. You know what's coming at you, but that might not be enough to beat it.
ive never been tc dropped, id think a good idea would be to prepare the second tc spot as soon as you get dropped, as in a tower, and starting single palisade walls spotted around to not give much room. i definitely couldnt do what i propose but i think tong could of. what do you guys think?
A few second delay to place your two start houses to cover space efficiently along side your local trees would go a long way, a few defensive single palisades as you say. If that isn't enough, make sure you drop a couple of defensive palisades that compliment where you intend to drop your new TC before you place it, so they can't reach you once you drop it down (usually against a wood line which covers lke 50% of the open space. We saw viper do this a week back in a team game where he quick walled the TC drop in so they couldn't place it down, and then the vills got walled in and ravaged.

And if a match up as the same color, you use blue/red but at least it will be an exception
500 in food and all that time not building villagers is a big investment and you need to make it pay off.
And good luck with that when you're under attack at your base.
You often see a player lose when they advance while defending (how many times have you heard T90 say “but what does Imp give him?”) and it seems the same applies at this stage of the game too.
"These Finnish players see the game differently."
Those minecraft mods will do that.

I wanted to see that lion fight.
That's gross. Incredibly well executed, but really, really gross 😅
This will be so OP in hidden cup because people don't even know it's coming
Maybe just once. After you see a player do this once it will become pretty obvious who is who and that its coming.
This game was insane, no wonder why he said no big at the beginning.
Had so much fun with this one.
"It's Big Rush time!"
"No, Rubenstock! No!"
HC is by far the most fun tournament to spectate I've ever seen
What if you keep your scout forward then vill rush the other player as they come to your base?
The Finnish like to rush because they want to "Finish" the game.
BUH-DUM-TSSS!
JustSaiyanXD get out
If he had made that tower defensively he could have made a safe tc and win with the higher vil count
Good point: I've seen Viper's react by putting up random palisades/houses near his TC as soon as he smells/house-scans a douche incoming.
Was it live streamed by someone too?
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!
Really wanna see this Rubendrop against Vipa/Tatoh/Yo
What about Cumans because they would have the extra TC in Feudal that could make things interesting. What does Rubenstock do if there's a TC on each end of the map?
Good Point: I'm sure he'd try another strat vs Persians/Cumans.
The tc rush starts in dark age already, so it’s unlikely that you have the wood for a 2nd tc when hitting feudal
rushing is a gift that keeps on giving
someone should make a rubenstock nothing game/map, basically just khmer with many patches of trees, stone, gold, and animals on the map, and the only structures allowed is Palisade walls, lumber camps, stone/gold camps, Town Centers, houses, farms, TC, and Towers, and the only units allowed are villagers, i feel like that would be a fun thing to watch honestly.
I need to get the newer version of AoE2 because I’m still playing off of a conquerors disc
Has Viper ever played against Rubenstock with his insane strategy? It'll be so sick to watch what happens.
I think you need to build a tower on your own TC to win the tc war.
I think that a correctly placed tower like this offers the least in counterplay options to the attacker. I am unsure about how an attacker could react to this.
I doubt the attacked could do anything other than rush it down with vils.
Alternatively, Rubenstock vs Noboru showmatch when?
well with a 38min feudal, blacksmith upgrades wont be coming before its
basically over anyway. It works because he start early and keeps
pressuring, there i no way to get to feudel and put down a blacksmith
much earlier than this and still denying the enemy to build up their own
economy like this. So pretty sure the khmer farming does way more to the strategy than inca blacksmith vills do
*sigh* can't make a comment on the internet without it being 100% serious all the time
This is truly insane meta game micro
the trick to beating this is getting your second tc up in a hidden spot so you can defend it from another drop
There should be a qualifier for the HC3 qualifier
Love your streams T90, longtime player short timer watcher.
i just realizing that i was missing zeroempires... you have kinda taken his place in my heart. Couldnt you do some casting together with him? :) (my x-wife account im writing from... i am a mann)
TC drop basically is the meta in team games now.
how do i send T90 replays? Low elo game i made an awesome comeback from being pretty much dopwn and out wondering if he wants to cast it lol
Tbh this should've been in the 'most annoying strategy' series lol but that strat is amazing and infuriating to play against
Show us the spring game.
DA BIG RUSH!
i wonder, when you get town center rushed. wouldnt just be better to ignore it, let if pop your town center and then just make another one near a gold/stone ? would basically (mathematically) mean that your opponent just wasted 2 min traveling across the map to be in the exact same situation as you.
Maybe to train in order to be able to counter it when you don't know it's coming
We need an AI that only ever does Rubenstock's strategy so people can come up with a counter to it. You know what's coming at you, but that might not be enough to beat it.
@Allen Iekanjika But once you're already dropped on, then what?
ive never been tc dropped, id think a good idea would be to prepare the second tc spot as soon as you get dropped, as in a tower, and starting single palisade walls spotted around to not give much room. i definitely couldnt do what i propose but i think tong could of.
what do you guys think?
A few second delay to place your two start houses to cover space efficiently along side your local trees would go a long way, a few defensive single palisades as you say. If that isn't enough, make sure you drop a couple of defensive palisades that compliment where you intend to drop your new TC before you place it, so they can't reach you once you drop it down (usually against a wood line which covers lke 50% of the open space. We saw viper do this a week back in a team game where he quick walled the TC drop in so they couldn't place it down, and then the vills got walled in and ravaged.
@@jackpowell9276 do you know if the viper game is on youtube? is it the finnish and chinese + accm games?
obviously wouldn't work in hidden cup, but if you know you are fighting rubenstock, why not pre-space palisades around your base to block tc drop?
So impressive. I hope they make it into HC3.
Can we talk about that perfectly place mill from blue.
What about walling in the dropped TC and trap the vills?
Would cumans be a good counter against rubenstock?
Love it when people break the meta
